    Only two years later space oddity was released. Then one year later the man who sold the world. Then hunky dory. Then Ziggy Stardust, and on and on and on. He could, and did do everything. There was only one David Bowie and forever he will be remembered as an innovater, re-inventor and a boundary breaker.
    Rip David Bowie, our one and only Starman.

      The world has simply no idea yet how valuable and important his actual heritage is. The last two albums are something nobody else can ever do - they are more like philosophical indexes cutting through decades than something that a normal rock god would do. Way closer to a prophet than a stone-age man.

    • @total.stranger
      @total.stranger 5 років тому +1

      But even in 1969, when 'Space Oddity' became his first hit in the UK, nothing happened for him in the US. Nothing at all. It wasn't until early 1972 that 'Starman' got airplay in the US - and even then, his music wasn't taken seriously by the hipsters of that time.

    • @samskid8913
      @samskid8913 5 років тому +2

      @@total.stranger I don't know anything about the hipster's reception in the US at that time, and I am not disagreeing with you, but if you have not already, you might enjoy reading the rave review with which the NY Times greeted his debut album--basically called it a work of genius.

    • @total.stranger
      @total.stranger 5 років тому +1

      @@samskid8913 Thanks for that tip, Sam's kid. I just did a quick search of the NYT, but couldn't find that review from 1967. I'll keep looking. Also, keep in mind that when "Starman" was first given airplay in 1972, everything going on, pop music-wise, was Southern Californian, earthy-crunchy, singer-songwriter stuff. Bowie's angle was from far left-field and he wasn't taken seriously. Later that summer, with "Ziggy Stardust", things began to change for him, but it was slow going. It was more a matter of the pop music world having to catch up with him, rather than him having to catch up with it. "Ziggy Stardust" helped that process along, and RCA re-releasing the "Space Oddity" and "The Man Who Sold The World" LPs. helped it along even more.

      When he made this video, he wasn't a success at all. He was - to put it mildly - a "nobody". He received good reviews for his debut LP that this song is from, but nobody out in record-buying land was listening - and no radio stations were playing him. He was just starting out in this video.

      @@total.stranger Even tho I don't think the highest of David Bowie's debut I will say it's a cute album, It takes us all back to a time before he was Ziggy, The thin white duke, The goblin king, Screaming Lord Byron, Major tom, and When he was just a 20 year old mime student David Robert Jones.

    • @total.stranger
      @total.stranger 2 роки тому

      @@jeanmichellelaurent Bowie's debut LP was interesting to me because he wrote songs that were similar to Ray Davies and The Kinks- who I'm a huge fan of.
      The Brown University FM station, WBRU, played "Uncle Arthur", "Love You Till Tuesday", and "Please Mr. Gravedigger" and sold me on him, for that reason - and also because he was an unknown who was very good and who had a unique voice. (like Anthony Newley's, who was a known entity, then.)
      I bought my copy new, during the summer of 1967, and was both a fan and a champion of his. I still consider "Gravedigger" to be one of the very best things he's ever done.
      At the time, I didn't know what or where Lambeth (place-named in Gravedigger) was, but ironically, decades later, when I began studying my family's genealogy, I discovered that many of them lived, died, and were buried there - "...till the War came along and someone dropped a bomb on the lot ..."
      In the fickle world of pop music, Bowie persisted and triumphed - and I'm happy for his success.

    When I first fell in love with this man and his music was at the tender age of 10 (5th grade), when I first saw him in the Let's Dance video. Then I started to accumulate all his music. Starting with this early music... Cassette tapes back then.. And I could only listen, not watch... Only imagine what this song looked like, not knowing there was an actual video. So this to me, watching these songs I so cherished at a young age, come to life and it's just very moving and makes me teary eyed. Remembering ... And now it comes to life, this song. 💛

    When i live my dream
    I'll take you with me
    Riding on a golden horse
    We'll live within my castle
    With people there to serve you
    Happy at the sound of your voice
    Maybe I'll slay a dragon for you
    Or banish wicked giants from the land
    But you will find
    Nothing in my dream can hurt you
    We will only live each other
    As forever when I live my dream
    When I live my dream
    I'll forget the things you told me
    And the empty man you left behind
    Its a broken heart that dreams
    A broken heart, you left me
    Only love can live in my dreams
    I'll wish and the thunder clouds will vanish
    Wish and the storm will fade away
    Wish again and you'll stand before me
    While the sky will paint an overture
    And trees will play the rhythm of my dream
    When I live my dream
    Please be there to meet me
    Let me be the one to understand
    When i live my dream
    I'll forget the hurts you gave me
    Then we can live in Hollywood land
    Till the time my dream cascades around me
    I'm content to let you pass me by
    Till that day you'll run to many other men

Then I heard the album "World of David Bowie" with this song on it. I was in shock that it was same person lol. Still fell in love with early Bowie. Especially "London Boys" and "Silly Boy Blue". Kudos to Sex Education for choosing this very unkown and old Bowie song. Extremely fitting for the scene they used it in. I've known this song for many decades, yet I probably wouldn't have thought of it for this purpose. Lovely.
