Thank you for the thorough explanation of this reel. I just got my first Abu 6500 and was trying to understand the centrifugal braking system, now thanks to you it all makes perfectly good sense! So thanks for taking the time to make this video, really appreciate it.
I've just got my first multiplicator reel. It's a Made in Sweden Ambassadeur 6500 CS Rocket. I have the two pin system but there's no brake blocks.. Should I order spares, can I upgrade to 6 block brake or should I just go without?
Digging around in my fishing cupboard today (I haven't fished for a few years due to an industrial accident) I came across an Abu multiplier that I haven't seen for about twenty years. It is an Ambassadeur Ultramag XLIII coloured Black and Red. I have looked for maintenance instructions for it and the only ones I can find are in Spanish which I translated using Bing which is a bit quirky and some of it makes little sense. The guy instructing suggested it was a bit of an Abu classic. I bought the reel sometime in the mid eighties and have only used it a few times and it seems to be still in excellent condition. I was wondering if you are at all familiar with this reel and/or if you might know somewhere I can get a good maintenance guide.
Bob Hatcher Its an Abu classic, used not just for fishing but the casting field too. Foran reels services (Hookless) in the US, Jerry Foran the owner is the top go to guy for vintage abu reels.
I have an 80s vintage Ambassadeur 6000. It has two breaks. If I install them with the slots towards the shaft they snap on but still move when the spool is in motion to provide breaking. If I turn the break around with the slots facing away from the center shaft they lock in place and don’t move with spinning. Is this a feature on all reels after the 80s. Either way I install them they don’t come off when the spool is removed.
Excellent info on centrifugal braking. Just bought an ABU C3 6500. Question: Is the centrifugal braking (6 pin) engaged "out of the box" or must I engage them. Not having stripped a reel before I'm not confident to look and documentation doesn't say.
I have two. They both came with 4 pins engaged. It’s not hard to check. Just take off the non handle side and the spool slides out, adjust your pins, and reassemble. No real small parts to deal with.
I didn't realize that you could shut off some of the 6 pin brakes on a C4 reel just by clicking them in? Great job ! I wonder if all 6 are active when you buy a reel new?
Totally awesome explanation. I have a question. Got a used ABU 5500c3 and tried to swop the two pin break with a new 6 pin. Did fit perfectly on the shaft. When casting and putting a bit of force, the whole reel started vibrating and squeaking. The issue is that sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes not??!! With the 2 pin it works all the time. Are they not interchangeable?
Hi, two pin brake works with two slot pinion gear and 6 pin brake works with 4 slot pinion gear. Please see; ua-cam.com/video/QfpSigBErNY/v-deo.html That will explain everything
Hi, when pushing the brakes onto the spool are they supposed to click on as mine are too tight and seem to be an interference fit which could end up not square. Akios shuttle 666
I was cleaning a 6500c syncro and broke one of the two plastic brake blocks. Are these absolutely needed? Should i replace it? The reel seems to function fine without one of the brake blocks..
Yes, but it's there to help limit you when other stuff would be affecting you like wind, lure weight, and even line weight. Basically it helps to slow the spool when it's at high speed so when the lure starts decelerating faster than the spool is, it provides enough resistance to keep your spool from feeding out more line than the lure is pulling out to prevent backlash.

Awesome video answered my questions to a tee.
Thanks for advice on those plastic pieces I was holding reel sideways and couldn’t figure out what the heck is holding cover off
Ahh, that is why my 2 blocks broke. Great explanation.
This makes me want a Akios caster, only one problem limited availability here in the US
Do a review on a abu 6500 ambasadeur ct premium please
Hi Jamie can you change the two pin to a six pin breaking centrifugal break as a conversion for ABU.
Will one of those Akios 6 block assemblies fit on my abu 6500 prem spool

Do you know of a way to lighten the clicker on an abu 6500 c3

@@ricker76er i thought u were supposed to take of the handle side?
good explanation Jamie

I have two 6500 C3s. They both came with 4 pins engaged.
meaning popped out, and active braking on 4 ?@@ricker76er
are the akios and abu brakes the same?

@@PimpMyReel thanks a bunch. I will get a 4 pin gear. That explains it.
So a little grease or reel oil is OK on the brake blocks? To hold it?

They work fine without any brakes at all, but you will have more backlash.
On my Abu, I like to take of about three blocks.
Wait are you saying a casting reel will have all three types of braking systems? Or just one of the three?
How many pins are puled out on the 6500C3 stock? I pushed mine in on accident and I'd like to put it back to how it was.
Mine had 4 out
how can i find u on ebay
Why do they need brakes? doesnt that limit the distance you can cast?

Can I send my reel to you ...???
Only if you are in the EU
