    This is the most thought I've put into a video (and my form) so far. I've been seriously working out my putting for months before sharing, and I'm so curious what you think of it!

    I spent a lot of time playing horseshoes when I was younger and I've spent some time practicing my "horsehoe putt," like not only putting my left foot forward but swinging my arm outside my body on the right side, much like a bowling motion. I actually really liked it as well. I still warm up that way sometimes, and I'll still tap in short putts that way too. I also really liked how it allowed me to step into a putt, even in the circle, and I'm curious about the legality of that move. (Starting behind your lie, and then stepping up to it)
    I still make more of my putts, especially at distance, with a more normal putt, but I kinda wished I was confident enough in my horseshoe putt to just go with it, because it's kinda fun to have your own style of play, especially at lower levels.

    • @alexgweiser
      @alexgweiser  Рік тому

      Totally legal as long as you don't step over your lie before the disc lands in the chains! It's def. fun to have your own style. Do you use your more traditional putt when playing against others, because it's more accurate? Or because it looks less weird.

      @@alexgweiser I normally straddle putt and I have a pretty pitchy/pushy putt anyway (I like to think it's sorta Barsby-esque), so I think a lot of my "horseshoe" putt kinda carries over to my normal putt.
      I do think I make more putts from more places with the normal straddle, so that's probably the biggest reason. Maybe I could get my horseshoe putt to the same consistency with a lot of practice, but my putt is not broken or anything, so it seems like it'd be a lot of work for not much payoff. Like I say, my regular putt arm motion actually isn't that different from the horsehoe putt and I think trying different putting styles helped me find and lock in that motion, even though I eventually decided to do it from a straddle instead. That's part of why I kinda like to warm up with a few horseshoe putts too. It's more "whole body," I don't get too in my head if they miss, and it helps find my swing.
      I almost kinda enjoy looking weird sometimes, like I also do silly "trick" throws and the like from the tee and stuff like that, and like I say, I'll tap in from 10' with a horsehoe putt during a competitive round. So I think if it was really working, I'd be throwing it.

    Great video. I think it's so beneficial to experiment around with your putt. I've tried all of the styles that I know of, and switched up my putt in a few times the 3 years I've played. I've recently started spush putting with a lot of spin emphasis, and now I'm putting with a modified grip with the pinky and index inside the rim and the two others resting on the plate. Which I never thought I'd ever do. That's why experimenting and trying it all can be so valuable, you never know what works for you.
    I think when practicing your stroke it's crucial to get the motion as smooth as possible, getting all the right moving parts synced up and actually working on your form is so important in the beginning. I think the biggest mistake people and myself included is to take the same approach to the course. When actually playing rounds you want it all to be automatic, you don't want to think about the way you release it, weight shift, or anything else because it's going to more than likely distort the natural motion of just throwing the putt naturally.
    For me, I've discovered at least that no-swing thoughts are the best. Playing with good putters I've often gotten the reply that "Just don't think about it" But that's easy to say, but it's also very open-ended. Trying not to think about it usually just makes things work. However, I think what they really do, is that they only focus on their aiming point. It's not like they go up to their lie and try to not think about anything. I think good putters are usually very laser focused and the only thing on their attention most of the time is their aiming point.
    So my takeaways from experimenting and practicing putting a lot and having lots of struggles myself is
    #1 find your putt, experiment and learn real good form. Watch pros with similar putting form and see what they do.
    #2 When you're starting to get good at your putting form and get more comfortable with it, start focusing more on the mental approach
    #3 When putting in practice, practice your form (swing thoughts, follow trough etc..) but also spend some time dead-focused on the basket and only on your aiming spot. Pretending like it's a real putt and changing your lie putt by putt will also mirror the scenario playing rounds, and it makes you learn lining up your body correct and practicing your routine.
    #4 When playing rounds think about what you need to think about before stepping up to the putt; consider the wind, putt or layup, aiming point.
    When you've done that, stare down the basket and just trust that your body will do its thing without consciously thinking about how to do it.

    Super cool video. Absolutely loving it.
    We need more of this, of recognising that form is different and things that might work for one person might not work for others. I've been messing around with a left-foot-foward-putt for a while now and while I keep changing it up, a buddy of mine which I convinced that this style of putt might be of great advantage for his specific form and miss, found very good success with it. I love seeing that trying unconventional form becomes more common.
    Keep it up. Really enjoyed this video

      Love this! Left-foot-forward is frowned upon by many because it's different, but if it works... it works! I oscillate, but lately the left has been working best for me. Glad it's working for your buddy! It's so good to get loose and play around with style.
      Also... thanks for the encouragement on the video, it's super fulfilling to hear you enjoyed it!

      @@alexgweiser yes exactly. It's never one size fits all. Right now I'm just standing with my two feet together and for some reason it works extremely well for me even on longer putts. I can't explain it but as long as it works I'm gonna use it. The standard putt never worked so well for me.
      Chase the feeling.

      @@MichaCnk Chase the feeling, for sure! I wonder at what point it makes senes to dial in a feeling to perfect a style, though? As I write this, I'm wondering if it makes sense to film myself putting and identify the ones that feel amazing and then try to isolate all the specific movements. Because there are putts that give me the great sense that, "if I could do this every time, I'd make everything."

    Interesting that you started putting with your left foot forward from bowling. I grew up playing ball golf, and I remember people started using a reverse grip, and long putters that go into your chest, as opposed to the "traditional" way to putt. Some pros made a lot of money putting a different. So when it comes to putting, don't let anyone tell you what's right or wrong, all that matters is that the disc goes in the basket.

    • @alexgweiser

    I wonder if you're left eye dominant with that putting style. When you're right handed but your dominant eye is left its called cross eye dominance.
    The only way I can see the center of the basket is having that stance where the left foot is forward. I used to be tour card darts player and I'm left eye dominant.

    • @alexgweiser
      @alexgweiser  Рік тому +1

      Oh that is a good question. And, heck yeah on the tour card darts. Impressive. I’m pretty right dominant generally, but my bowling experience is what brought me to try the left food forward.
      Since making the video, i have actually switched back to the right foot. I think it was a good stepping stone in my form to find some flow.
