Terry McEwan took me to dinner once and mentioned this performance. Originally scheduled was, I think, Crespin. When she canceled 3 performances late in the game, Kurt Herbert Adler, the intendant, was up a creek and consulted Terry (former head of London Records classical division). He suggested giving one performance each to Rysanek, Jones and Magda Olivera. Pavarotti was delighted with the prospect of Rysanek and the chance to work with Olivera even late in her game. But he balked at Gwyneth, claiming he didn’t want to have to sing with a wobbly Bayreuth soprano. McEwan worked to assuage his concerns. Pavarotti promised to “eat his hat” if Gwyneth was acceptable. After the first intermission of the performance, he accosted McEwan, who was backstage, painter’s cap in hand and began munching. “She is the best Tosca I ever work with,” Pavarotti claimed. “Scusami.”
The soprano was more than likely Montserrat Caballe. Crespin was no longer singing Tosca in 1978 and Caballe and Pavarotti sang the 1978 Tosca broadcast from SFO.
I had tickets, and was 18! It was supposed to be Monserrat Caballé.

Great performance. I hate that Pavarotti's ovation was cut after "Recondita armonia" in spite of the tape speed/pitch being changed at the start. Why do they do this??? Thanks for sharing this.
Grande cast e bellissima edizione. Adoro lo Scarpia di Gobbi,ma se devi studiarti il ruolo di Scarpia e capire bene come fraseggiarlo e scavarlo Taddei è un punto di passaggio obbligato
