- I had this 320D ed for a few days, my main aim was to see how accurite BMW's 70.7mpg combined figure was.... Turns out it's actually very close!
Thanks for watching and all your support!

My 2012 F30 manual managed 69.5mpg from London to Blackburn, very impressed by my first ever diesel car!!
Iv got a manual 2012 320d i only get 35mpg tops think it needs a service
I have a 2011 model & tested it on a 28 mile trip early on a Sunday morning with virtually no traffic. Some dual carriageway 14 roundabouts and a few other junctions driving as economically as I possibly could. I got 87.4mpg!
Impressive for sure, great honest review as always! BMW offer the best of both; I have a remapped F31 M Sport Plus 330d circa 325hp and 516lb/ft which still surprises me after three years ownership returning 45-50mpg. My commute is 50 odd miles each way so if I'm doing 'work mileage' and using ECOPRO mode I'm seeing +55mpg. If flat out (0-60 sub 5 secs) I'm getting around 35mpg....frankly it is staggering!
Joe - keep up the good work.
Try a full emmision delete and fueling remap for the extra air flow. With modern tyres GY efficient performance 2 you will see mid 60s mpg & 700 mile + tank range.
I have 2016 320d ED LCI, it has B47 engine, with little bit more torque, manual transmission and it is not that sensitive on the timing chain, which can snap on N47 engines. Mine is now 115k km, 18inch wheels, avg consumption 6.0 l/100 kmcombined in comfort mode. Eco pro I don't use, but I have tested it on a motorway. Cruise control on 130 kmh, family and luggage, 600 km trough the German mountains motorways avg 5.5 l/100 km which is for that power and weight very good. Still it is under 8 sec 0-100.
So many good video's Joe, even the slightly older 1's are amazing mate 👍🏻
Great review - nice to see the less glamorous things like this covered too. I struggle to get over 27 mpg from my auto M135i tank to tank with everyday driving and commuting. Not bad for such a level of performance I suppose but it would be nice to crack 30 !
haha yeah it would be nice if the 135 had a) a slightly larger tank and b) 10-20% more efficiency... But as you say, it's not bad for a car with all that performance on tap! I was hoping to actually see how far a tank would take me I'm the 320d, I just didn't have the time though. Cheers man
You need lighter shoes
Ha ha
Thanks Joe, well done and great insights. Impressive indeed.
Cheers buddy 👍
Been looking for a real world review. Thanks!
+Aman Hira Pleasure mate, glad you liked it!
Just test drove it today. Fantastic as it is, I just can't stand the engine noise. Horrible!
+Aman Hira totally understand, try the 6 cylinder 330d 👍
+Joe Achilles I will give it a test. cheers!
nice review, even recognise part of the area you were driving (going up near Iver Heath)
Hi Joe, really enjoying the videos and channel that's building nicely (we've chatted some time back on Babybmw). A couple of nerdy points - really I think it should be done from cold - especially this time of year as we all set off in the morning this way. And on board computers and mileage recorders are inaccurate (optimistic), speedos usually 3-5% over read too as we all know. To be really accurate one needs to do the old brim to brim litres used over a full tank and set this against the trip recorder having deducted say 5% of miles shown to allow for over reading. Would be really interested if you'd do this for your next tank full in the m135i (especially as many more of us will aspire to one of those over a 320ed!) - say a week's typical family use including work commutes, weekend blasts and the real killer; 1 - 2 mile school runs from cold. My 120d auto is an old first gen one now and not great MPG wise compared to the latest - average for us is 42.5 but it gets lots of horrible short runs.
+Max Poilu Hey Max, yeah I remember you! Yeah you have a good point re the speedo and trip computers always being slightly out (3-5%). I didn't have long to do the test otherwise I was planning to see how far I could get on a single tank... Regardless Its an impressive piece of kit if mpg or low running costs is top of your priority. I average around the 26mpg in my M135i, or around 260 miles from its small tank. Cheers Joe
bmw 320d.... very pleasant,,, maybe the most easy going... I just lay back and enjoy it... just love my 12 year old 200 k km aut 320d... average normal maintenance... effortless power delivery from low revs... musical... very secure car... enough acceleration to have fun... very light sensation... it flies to me... very musical,,,, don´t recommend M or race suspension... just average 19´ tires...the best for bumps and road holes... so confortable... I don´t like faster cars... make you aggressive... I could have any other "better car" but no way... will never change model... just has perfect equilibrium... less is more... minimalist... zen... and just love that power from low revs... my next baby... white color... safer than any other color... and with best sound system harman kardon... what else... mozart playing inside... love diesel
I own a 330d f30 m sport ,it is an amazing car both performance and economy.I drive fairly quick and it has never dropped below 43.3 mpg.
whats the city only MPG like? If its anywhere close to the high 30s/low 40s thats great.
(My old but indesctructible Alfa 1.9 JRFM 8v/16v does kITY 😂... it survived even a accidental downshift from 4600rpm to 7000+rpm)
What amazes me (being old) is how economical an auto box car can be.
I read that quite often the auto option is quicker from 0 to 60 AND be more economical than the manual?
Haha yeah I know exactly what you mean! The old 3 or 4 speed Autos for the late 80's or 90's were far less efficient and slower than their manual versions.
One note. Cruse control inhibits the coasting function of the ED eco mode.
Better set the limiter instead you can squeeze a little more out of it.
My 2008 520d auto returns 65 mpg at 75mph and normally 48 mpg on a mixed cycle. Brilliant engineering
I have a 2015 m sport xdrive and the mpg in comfort is unreal
I get 50mpg exactly on a 1 hour, 40 mile motorway run. I am using cruise control mostly but trying to use it to accelerate and decelerate when appropriate. My car is a 2006 320d SE manual with 143,000 on it. So I can't complain with it being old and costing me £1700. But I have had it serviced, filters all changed, and I'm running 17 inch Msport wheels.
Thanks for the review. This of course depends on the fuel used too. Probably if you do that journey everyday mpg would drop as you would drive with your engine cold for longer. Great review and car
Over 67 MPG, that's pretty impressive given the fact that is a nice car. I'm need to see if I can get better than that out of mine. I'll let you know how I get on.
Yeah quite unbelievable buddy, yours will definitely free up once it's done a few thousand miles... Hope you're well mate 👍
Its been 5 years, we're still waiting for you to let us know...
On the motorway, driving at 79 I'll get 55mpg, and sticking to 70 will return 65mpg (118D) in comparison to this 320D that's pretty impressive 🤔 150bbp only though lol
Yeah man that's really decent too, all modern BMW diesels are impressive 👍
Thanks Joe. Very well done.
Mine is a 2012 standard 320d and mixed driving gives over 60mpg driving without much regard to evonomy
Lol never thought I would see my area on a random review on youtube. Was the village you was on about Harefield? When go for my drives I always drive around uxbridge, it was crazy seeing this video
I got from Paignton UK to Kosovo via Croatia coast, on 2.5 tank fulls.
TYVM for the video. I like what I see and hear. ATB. Reeco
my dream car 🚗
Your dream car is a 2litre diesel BMW? What a party animal you are.
What’s your average since owning? I can get 70mpg average on a trip but around 55mpg overall
love my 320d 2011 usually get 650 miles on a motorway run full to dry
I've been subscribed a few months to you never seen you errm soo much lol
+Birmingham racing cheers - yeah this was an early video of mine, I was always very nervous and my editing skills were crap. Hopefully my latest videos are much better
Joe Achilles your more recent videos are much better. I remember one recent video you mentioned how much you used to erm a lot and now I know what you mean. Not watched the tour video yet but will do when I have time it's on my watch later list. Carry on making videos I've subscribed since the first video I've seen it's good stuff
Joe Achilles I'm looking at buying one of these now so and yeah I'm still subscribed haha
ED Efficient Dynamics means what? some sort of battery?
I own this 63 reg great car full leather and top end 145 mph 0-60 7 seconds.
Is it just as good as m sport does it shift quick mate
In sports + mode does the cars bhp power increase from 160s to the 180s ? 160 seems very underpowered for a 2.0
Impressive MPG! Do you still own the Rolls Royce and 135i?
Yeah as Taylor said, both Rolls were just for London Fashion Week, I own a M135 and 730LD. Cheers
How many miles u do in a full tank
I drove from Bromley, Kent to Passau, Germany on one tank of fuel, 750 miles, before the fuel warning light came on.
Does the f30 have the active radiator flaps like the e90 does?
I'm about to buy a bmw 320d xdrive. Any opinion about fuel consumption?
I get 46mpg with a 320D 8speed xdrive touring M sport
Hmm, my 2013 330d xdrive would have struggled to get 40mpg on that run. Not good.
You have x drive paired with a 3.0 heavy and heavy
The question is, does the M sport 320 return the same fuel economy? if its ever so slightly lower then M sport is better overall. This ED (not the plus or sport version) is only great if it significantly better than M sport.
ED is about 10mpg better than M Sport in mixed driving and even more on a steady motorway drive.
I’m buying 320d 2013 diesel automatic has 116k on it any advice to go for it or no as i heard very bad things about the 2 litter diesel bmw is my dream car but I don’t wanna end up with one that makes me hate it thank you for any advice
hello, is the engine just detuned or is diff internals?
Balancer is different for smoother engine less vibration at low revs.
Hi, is it possible to get hid lights fitted?
Just as a comparison
My company 17 plate skoda octavia 1.6 tdi manual, full to the point of no rear seats full of tools and work related gubbins has, according to the trip done
8hr: 3 mins
218 miles
26mph average speed
63.8 mpg.
you don't wait for drivers to move over to join the motorway!!! you adjust your speed on the slipway so you can safely join the traffic, think about it,
Thats exactly what I did and do, what are you referring to?
Entry looked perfectly ok to me. People just moan about fuck all lol
What’s the lowest speed you can go and it stay in 8th gear on the flat and at what rpm?
Low 40s mph at 1100 rpm. Set the cruise at 44 mph. Below that or if there is a hill, it shifts down to 7th gear.
Why do bmw still put halogens in their cars? Makes the vehicles look cheap and not so appealing.
Good review nevertheless.
how much is for petrol full tank?
Malibu Thompson these days about £60 in the UK. £1.23 per litre for petrol. £1.26 per litre for diesel
how many gears does the auto have what rpm would it be doing on the motorway doing 70mph? and what mpg strictly motorway
It has the 8 speed ZF gearbox and it revs about 1200-1300 rpm at 70mph.
@@dontbenosey1 I think it’s around 1500-1700 a 3ltr would be around 1200-1300. I know these at 80mph are usually around 1900-2100
Makes me laugh when people use the the trip as real mpg they end up no where near do a brim to brim and wake up and even then its no good being amazing on diesel when the chain snaps stay away from the N47,Gearbox changing up to fast lugging the engine and stop start =bye bye turbo
jamie211983 My onboard trip computer is only out by 2mpgs !!
£1 per litre!
Anyone watching in 2024 😂
ive counted 50 ermms in the first 5 min of this review, that is so anoying.
+Mark Wigley Thanks for taking time to count them! What exciting project you got going on next?

You have to start somewhere, made it into a very good living these days. How's your life?
@@JoeAchilles1 Well done you! So have you stopped yourself umming in more recent videos? My life's pretty great thanks for asking, looking at buying a bmw and checking out the ED pro's and con's, hence watching you're video. It wasn't a comment out of malice just pointing out something that became annoying in a comical fashion. Enjoy you're umm Sunday 👌😅
stop saying erm
Erm
@@JoeAchilles1 thanks for reply keep well.
You got stop sayng and repeating (ammmm ,amm,ammm....) it annoying!
Maybe you'd like to send a link to your video that doesn't have those problems?
THIS IS NOT A 2016 MODEL IT'S 2015 NON FACE LIFTED ONE , WITH PROBABLY NO EXTRA OPTIONS AT ALL...THE SUCKY VERSION :)
Stop saying erm. Ffs
320d still cant beat audi b6 1.9tdi no matter what year bmw is.
Murtaza Hussain this 320d is a lot newer than a old 1.9 tdi
