    As a 2017 335d Touring owner I urge you to disregard the rubbish being talked about the suspension. All recent 335d’s are xDrive, and as standard, all xDrive BMW cars get the Comfort suspension. This suspension is supple and allows for much quicker progress than with rock hard M Sport suspension on any UK road. If your car will spend its life on a track, fit firmer and lower suspension, otherwise the standard units will impress with comfort and traction. Leave the skittish handling to the modders who don’t understand suspension physics and UK roads.

    All your comments are bang on. I had a 435d for 4 years, and the E92 335d before that. The 435d improved in all areas except for handling. I fixed the ride height with ACS springs, and also specced the adaptive suspension to eliminate the SE dampers. Waaaayyyyy better. It was a great car.
    Sold it last October and now have an M4. Miss the economy like mad but love the performance and poise of the M4. Real world though the 435d would have been difficult to shake!

    Twin pipe exhaust looks better than a single pipe exhaust, the suspension is good for a comfortable ride. Adaptive dampers solves if you want a stiffer ride.
    The mpg dial and the small screen hmi are pretty poor for a car of this calibre in this day and age, bigger screen and digital mpg is much nicer on the inside.

  • @badger4361

    I get what you mean about the ride height and exhausts, it's a proper sleeper car though. I drive in Scotland which has a lot of shitty backroads, so i'd probably take the increase in ride height as a positive as I'd probably be working the suspension harder. Nice review though fella, well presented, good work. I think if I wanted to be noticed I'd get a new Civic type R, which i'd love to have by the way :).

    I recently bought a 14 plate 330d, luxury xdrive. Needed a diesel for commuting but wanted something with a but more power than the 120d. Car came with a bunch of extras and it feels like such a massive upgrade from the 1 series. I think the exhaust looks fine on my car as it matches the chrome styling, but agree it looks out of place on the m sport version. I'm not sure if I'm overly fussed on the auto box, I've always had manuals up until now and 1,000 miles later I still feel like I miss manual. Need to give it more time I think.

    Things I don't like about my F30 340i - (1) the start/stop always defaults to on every time you start (2) the cruise control is the same - isn't on by default, (3) the next track button that was on the steering wheel in my E92 335D isn't there anymore and (4) there is too much wind noise around the drivers' side where the wing mirror is.
    What do I like - (1) 326bhp, (2) the noise - it doesn't have the sport exhaust bit it still sounds good when you hoof it, (3) 326bhp.
    As for the ride height - is it an Xdrive? If so, that's why - the 330d M Sport has less power bit has the lower ride height (and can be easily remapped to more than the 335d).
    As for tyres - get Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

      Cardinal Biggles I've got 330d Msport remaped to 315bhp 650nhm it a monster sits nice and low and on adaptive suspension drives ace. Downsides torque limit on gearbox is lower than 335d so got to have that in mind when pushing. After putting it on Michelin ps4s it's a complete everyday rocket :)

    - The 335d is only available with X-drive (a rear-biased torque-vectoring AWD system). X-drive MSport models do NOT have the lower suspension of the RWD MSport models, although the springs and dampers are firmer than on the SE version. I assume it's to do with driveshaft alignment. I've been told it's not a good idea to lower the suspension on X-drive models.
    If you want a fast 3-series that handles really well on smooth roads, get a 340i or a 330d (non-X-drive). But you won't get the awesome traction of the 335d in slippery conditions.
    - The adaptive xenons of the pre-facelift model have sharper vertical cut-offs than the adaptive LEDs and are (subjectively) brighter. The adaptive system + high-beam assistant allows each headlight to aim itself independently. Thus the nearside headlamp will stay on main beam and pivot sideways to shine up the verge when there's an oncoming car, while the offside unit dips. The vertical cut-offs allow both headlights stay on main beam if following a car at night, but aim past it on either side and so don't cause dazzle. It's a brilliant system and vastly superior to the adaptive headlights of the F10/11 5-series.
    - The F31 has more driver legroom than the F11 5-series!
    - Couldn't agree more about the exhaust pipes. In the pre-facelift versions, only the 6-cyl models had twin pipes, now even the 320d has the same twin tailpipes as the 335d. Grrrr..

    • @TheBenchmarkuk

      FangPaw that was very informative thank you.
      Yes I heard about the ride height with xdrive combo but I honestly think that's just nonsense, plenty of people have lowered or slammed them on coilovers!

    KW v2 coilover suspension/non runflats sorts the car, don't bother with springs, still a big problem with poor damping. Once the car can handle the power it's got you'll want more power (Steinbauer's box is really good)

    • @TheBenchmarkuk

    Negatives are not an issue. If you spent a bit more on the spec, you would have the 19 inch wheels which wouldn’t make it look ride as high.

    • @TheBenchmarkuk
      @TheBenchmarkuk  7 років тому +1

      I have seen them with 19s and the suspension height is just as bad.
      I intentionally left option complaints out of this video and just brought up the core issues regardless of spec.

    • @_dan_here_
      @_dan_here_ 7 років тому +3

      But, if someone doesn't like the spec of their car - they change it or get another one. Before I purchased my f31 M Sport, I knew I didn't like any of the cars that had the 18s on as they have made the wheel arches so big - they swallow the MP 20" wheels so It had to be 19s or not at all. If they didn't offer any other wheels for this car and you were stuck with your 18s, I would understand. But, you choose those wheels... The 19s sit well on it, I think BMW expected that most customers wouldn't like the 18s - so they would spend extra on the upgrade.

    • @censorshipBS
      @censorshipBS 6 років тому +1

    Hey man, hope things are good.
    Regarding the M Sport / SE spec and suspension. 'M Sport' refers mainly to the spec of the car, same as 'S Line' or 'GLX' etc so you will get more kit with an M Sport. It is my understanding when I spec'd my 335d at BMW recently that you need to purchase the 'M Sport Plus Package' to gain the full M Sport spec WITH the M Sport suspension. There is another factor in this as well though dude because the XDrive's, which all 335d's are (I.e. a non permanent four wheel drive) do ride higher than an non X Drive car, because of the extra transmission and room required underneath. I hope this explain a few things. Like the vids 👌

    • @FangPaw
      @FangPaw 7 років тому

      The MSport Plus package adds bigger brakes (with blue calipers) and 19" wheels. The suspension is unchanged (I have a 2015 (1st gen) 335D F31 MSport with the optional 19's, my other half has a 2017 335d F31 MSport with the Sport Plus package. Both ride and handle identically). You can specify adaptive adaptive dampers which firm up in the Sport and Sport+ settings, but think they're a bit of a waste of time.

    • @dangreen5985
      @dangreen5985 7 років тому +1

      In that case, whoever spec'd up the car must have specifically asked for the SE suspension on the car, it can be done. Some people want the M Sport spec but softer suspension I guess.

    • @FangPaw
      @FangPaw 7 років тому

      Forgot to add - the X-drive system IS a permanent AWD system, biased 30-70% front-to-rear. The system will transfer power to whichever wheel(s) has the most grip. It feels like RWD until you give it lots of welly in the wet, whereupon you can feel power transferring to the front wheels.
      All MSport models get MSport suspension as standard (which can be deleted as a no-cost option) with firmer springs and dampers and is lowered on the non-X-drive models. MSport models also get a bigger wheels and tyres (wider at the back than front), a smaller fatter steering wheel, shorter gear lever (on manual models such as the 320D), leather MSport seats, black headlining, the "high-gloss shadow line" (instead of chrome) around the windows, etc. The 330D and 335D also get the Sport auto gearbox (with flappy paddles) as standard. So it's not just more goodies.

    • @FangPaw
      @FangPaw 7 років тому

      No, the 335D MSport does ride more softly than the (say) 330D MSport, but is nevertheless appreciably firmer than an SE.

      The 335D regardless of spec would have the same negatives I mentioned.... I did take that into consideration before making the video.

      I have a 335d with adaptive suspension and it looks the same as a 330d but is so much quicker it's unreal. I have no idea how you can possibly say a 330d is better than a 335d. Especially a rwd. The Xdrive is rear biased and brilliant, I can easily see off an M3 in the wet or round corners and even off the line, can you?. If you've got a 330d that's great and I'm sure its a superb car but let's not pretend it's better than a 335d Xdrive!
