Hi guys, we hope you enjoyed our 3 Series used guide!
We didn't include prices in the video (they'd be wrong to anyone watching in a few years' time) but at the moment in the UK you can expect to pay from £4k for a scruffy, early high-miler, up to roughly £30k for a top spec, low mileage 2018 car.

Ive had my 16" 330e for about a month now and im super happy with it, ridiculously good fuel economy for when i have to use the gas engine as well. 4.9L per 100km is my average on only the gas engine after not having reset the computer for 750km. The B-modular engines are probably the best engines BMW have ever made, way way better than most of the N-engines. IMO if youre getting an F30, try and get a LCI version. B38, B47, B48, B57 and B58 are great engines.

@@richiebtime489 Sadly, it's not just BMW. Look at the problems VW has had with the TSI engines and 7-speed DSG gearboxes, and the well-known problems that Porsche has had with various Boxster and 911 engines. German reliability is a big of a myth. Having said that, my current 2016 330d is just approaching 80000 miles, and it's been faultless so far.

This is the car i have (Sport Package.) Had it for 7 years. Took it in for maintenance every 5k, oil/filters. Up to 162k i had to replace spark plugs, coils, gas tank, transmission service, and computer. After 162k timing chain/guides, spark plugs, valve cover, tank fuel pump and fuel pump control unit. All in the same month. Set me back about $6k in repairs. Put money aside if you plan on getting one.

Yeah, and the LCI dialed back some more comfort oriented suspension tweaks made in 2011-2012 which makes it (in standard-suspension form) feel more like the E90. Also the petrol 320i got the B48, and there came a 318i 3 cilinder 136 HP. LED headlights became standard, and there where a few other tweaks here and there... So much to tell, also about the first pré-LCI 320i and 328i N20 engine with timing chain problems.. There was much more to tell if people where really interested in buying a second hand F30..

If you're buying one of these, here are a few things to look out for seeing as this video didn't really explain much in that department:
-The plastic piece at the bottom of the front windshield gets worn out by the sun and heat and falls to pieces
    - The rubber seal at the top of the front windshield goes sticky and falls appart
    - The paint on the wheels flakes off over time
    - Pretty much ever BMW logo on the car corrodes
    - The headlights (especially the halogens) overheat over time and crack from the inside out, the halogen headlights are also as effective as glow sticks
    - The leather on the M-Sport steering wheels is very easily corroded by the sun
    - The clear plastic piece on the shifter cracks in the sun
    - There are numerous squeaks and rattles throughout the cabin
All things considered they're OK cars, I would probably not buy another though. My car is perfectly fine from a mechanical standpoint, however it isn't holding up as well from a cosmetic point of view.

Not much detail about options to look for. I will most likely be buying a 340i LCI touring later in the year and for me a must have option is the 'M Sport Plus pack' which includes Xenon and LED headlights (yes the top of the range touring will have halogens if not spec'd right), 19" 442M wheels, M Sport brakes, tinted rear windows and 14 speaker Harman/Kardon sound system.
Another must have is 'Media Pro pack' which gives a higher resolution and wider media screen, live traffic and a much better idrive wheel, without this it just makes the car have a much more basic/cheap feel to it. Many higher in the range cars were spec'd with this but it was a £1000 option so not all were so it's worth looking out for, that would be a deal breaker for me.
Other options I would like are 'Adaptive M Sport Suspension', some do say this is essential as the standard suspension is a bit too soft when you're pressing on and the passive M Sport suspension is overly harsh when running on run flat tyres as all BMW's are but apparently it does make a big improvement changing to non run flats.
'Head-up display' definitely not essential but just a nice feature to make the car feel a bit more special.
'Surround View' again not essential but quite a helpful feature which has cameras all around the car giving you, as the name suggests, complete all round view of the car on the media screen. It also has cameras in the front bumper in front of the wheels so when say you're in a car park with cars both sides of you blocking your view or pulling out an end of the road junction with bad visibility you can see if anything is coming without straining to see and blindly inching your front end in the path of traffic.

    • @DC-dc6ey
      @DC-dc6ey 3 роки тому +1

I agree with all of the above. Options are really important. I bought a 2016 340i a few months ago and love it. The only thing that seems like a gimmick is the cameras by the front wheels to supposedly help you see around corners. I’ve tried to use them countless times and haven’t found them to be very helpful.

    • @Enselladus
      @Enselladus 3 роки тому +1

@@DC-dc6ey Yeah getting the right spec is probably more important on BMW’s than any other car. Having Surround View won’t be hugely important for me but I would prefer to have it, the problem is it's quite rare to find any cars that have it so if I hold out for it, it massively limits my options.

Its so difficult finding adaptive M Suspension spec… did they not soften up the passive M Suspension in the LCI? I dont really want to fork out on non runflat tyres if 19s with Passive M suspension is fairly ok on crappy roads

I'm surprised at Auto Express! This is a terrible run down of info on this car!!!.......Firstly there was an important LCI in 2016 model year with some comprehensive tweaks including engines and chassis suspension set ups plus exterior design tweaks. The worst bit was when they mentioned the 325d (which was a total waist if time compared to the 330d). The 335d which should definitely of been mentioned, if you want pace, was faster real world and much more frugal than he 335i/340i plus 4 wheel drive which all decent performance cars are adopting now. Bad Auto Express........very poor!

However, he mentioned many of these engine models (N20/N26) fail at some point... I've heard stories of timing chain failures with no indication or obvious sounds. I’m on my 9th 3-series with an M330d touring run out model, and it’s the best by far. Unbelievable fuel consumption (always over 40mpg, sometimes as high as 52mpg) superbly comfortable, great muscular performance (with a growl under load) and it’s an estate. The delicacy of the chassis in the corners is wonderful (especially without the x-drive, which weighs more too). I run it on a winter tyre set for snow and ice and it goes everywhere in the worst conditions like this. The dog can go in the back, but so does more or less anything else. I just take great care when the seats are folded down, the merino leather is delicate and needs looking after. HUD is far from the gimmick I thought it would be. My biggest (and perhaps only) gripe is that the window lifter switch panel rattles terribly on both sides - a common problem - and it spoils what is otherwise a silent and well put together cabin.
My biggest issue is deciding whether hybrid or diesel will be my next choice in the G series.
But for now I’m hanging on to this one. With a one off colour (Ferrari Medio Grigio) it’s the only one of its type in the country and I love the individuality. Fortunately someone else paid for it - I picked it up second hand...

Good morning! I’d like to ask you something. I have a VW T-ROC, 150hp petrol, which I bought new in 2019. Now has 70.000km. The car is awesome. However, I’d like to change it, and I’ve been offered a 2015 BMW 330d touring xdrive with M package. The thing is it has 160.000 km. Don’t know what to do…but I really like that car

@@maedhros0111 I sense your question revolves around reliability of a high Km car. My answer is that the engine is fundamentally strong and I wouldn’t be too concerned but as with all ICE, a lot is dependent on how it has been serviced. Unless you are very budget limited I would be tempted to find something with a known history and lower Km for that peace of mind - there are plenty out there.
However my experience is that the package is extremely strong, and aside from routine stuff you should not be concerned about age particularly

I have the button on my car and when you press it it lights up...but doesn't seem to work, I have a BMW 2018 320d, lane assist button is at the front but slightly underneath. I was also driving earlier going round a roundabout when a redcar pic came up and a beep...crapping myself as I had no idea what this I pulled up at nearest stop. Apparently its collision warning, however I cant find this in my options or anything. On the windscreen there is the hole for what the manual says radar option...however in the 2 weeks Ive owned it that's never happened before and I cant find any options...kinda confused to be honest

and ofc e60 m5 is not for every day drive to work and back :D
also i got myself a car 3 years ago, nothing special just something to get me to and from work
so now when i got a bit better job and got older i want to buy a bmw that's good for every day drive to work and back, and also to go out of the country, because i never went outside the country
i feel like this is the perfect car for me,320d ofc, maybe buy one with 150k km and drive it up untill 300k maybe even more, depends
ONLY PROBLEM IS,i don't want a "normal" car, like u said skoda superb or mazda 6,sure skoda is good looking, but it ain't no bmw
so there we go,time to look for a bmw to buy :D

New 3 series has lost the looks and most are automatic only cars, also if you want a 6 cylinder car the only option is the turbo 335i. This is probably one of the worst 'buy guides' ever. "go and check the mileage", nothing really specific about the different models (just pick a small engine model if you are concerned with fuel consumption or a large engine model if you like some more speed), common issues of the N20 engine, such as the timing chain.
I'm quite a fan of the F30 model, but this 'buy guide' doesn't do it any justice; and neither does it openly tell about its flaws (except for the very specific sequence in which you need to connect your phone to bluetooth, play Spotify and only then go to external Media, in order to get the proper song-data-sharing on your screen in the car...)

Anecdotes aren’t helpful, look at the overarching statistics that show which brands are less likely to fail (I.e. Lexus).
