That is a fantastic point about how bickering can work and why it doesn't here. There are people who really enjoy sharing barbed comments, like a game trying to one-up each other and show off their wit. It's such a different vibe to when you can't stand someone to the point where you can't even share a pleasant word
Not me having seen the David Tennant and Catherine Tate version of Much Ado about a thousand times but still giggling and kicking my feet at the clips.
you pointing out that the whole thing takes place on an estate... makes me wish for a much ado about nothing adaptation that's set on a modern dating reality show. i imagine beatrice, having gone on a love island type show because she wanted to lay by the beach but not really believing she could ever love anyone... running into her ex-situationship and being thrilled to hang out with her frenemy while her best friend (also on the show) gets screwed over by Claudio... anyway great video. thanks for making it!!
As a fellow shy introvert, While You Were Sleeping is one of my all time favorite rom-coms. I love that Lucy's awkwardness/klutziness is an aspect of her character instead of her ENTIRE CHARACTER. She's not "the clumsy one", she's a person who is clumsy. And even though she gets into plenty of embarrassing situations because of it, I never feel secondhand embarrassment from those scenes like I do with most comedies. Possibly because the embarrassing thing is depicted more as a problem or setup for a joke, rather than being the joke itself? Also I appreciate that the film doesn't imply shyness is a problem that needs to be fixed or cured. It tells viewers "you deserve people who care about you and like you for YOU, even if you're too shy to ask, and if they're truly healthy relationships you won't need to change your core self to be worthy of them."
Hayley Atwell is, in fact, doing Much Ado About Nothing opposite Tom Hiddleston, and you can bet your ass I'm going to see it in London! I already got the tickets lol
i think really important facets of both benedick and beatrice (but especially benedick imo) are that they’re clowns!! they put their foot in the mouth constantly, always making jokes/hiding behind being funny/clever, and also totally the type of person who’d miss the chair as they go to sit down and fall straight on their ass. HOWEVER they’re also actually smart and also KNOW they’re the smartest in the room which is where the blend of insufferable/lovable comes in. smartass clowns! that characteristic makes the “trick them into falling in love” make so much more sense - they’re too proud/afraid of vulnerability to actually be the first one to admit anything AND everyone kinda wants to humble them a little cause they think they’re so smart lmao.
There’s a version of Much Ado About Nothing performed by Shakespeare in the Park in 2019. I think it’s also a truly excellent version of the play. There was chemistry between the leads and quite a few funny moments. I also liked that it was an all black cast and Beatrice’s actress not being skinny.
24:43 I love this section and agree that making Claudio and Hero gay is a bad choice. I have actually seen a performance of Much Ado About Nothing where they made Benedick and Beatrice lesbians, and I did love it and it was interesting what lines referring to gender they changed or kept the same and how it influenced the subtext/implications of the lines. They also made Leonato and Antonio "brothers" (a gay couple) and it was fascinating how that made Leonato's reaction to the accusations against Hero feel so much worse, because, at least to me, the intense misogyny felt more awful coming from a queer character than from someone who is straight and fully bought in to heteronormativity and that view of marriage and sexuality.
Queen! Give us the modern Much Ado About Nothing adaptation we deserve! I would commit crimes for your book and mini-series! I also adore the David Tenant and Catherine Tate stage production above all others.

I watched it and was like "how on earth would anyone fall for her?" Yes Sydney Sweeney is beautiful, but the character has no charm whatsoever. She comes across as a total mean girl who makes everything about herself, and the type who in a better film would be the villain or ex girlfriend to demonstrate why another girl is better. Hell, when Ben is listing a When Harry Met Sally style speech about what he likes about her, there's barely any distinguishing characteristics
I've never really been a rom-com girl; Idk, it's just a genre that's never drawn me in all that much, although I do have my select favorites from it (Pitch Perfect, The Ugly Truth, The Proposal, How to Be Single, Mr. Right even though it's technically also an action movie...). Even so, though, I did notice their steady die-out in cinema, and thought ABY would serve be a solid revival/reinvigoration of the genre for a new decade. It's honestly disappointing to learn that it really isn't, especially with it doubly-serving as a supposed Shakespeare adaptation. 🤷♀
@@talistheintrovert OMFG Mr Right is so goddamn fun. An underappreciated gem; Sam Rockwell's most fun role. I hate how nobody seems to have heard of it. You mentioned Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You. (Did you mention Easy A?) Those are maybe the Mount Rushmore of RomComs (if Easy A counts... the Com plays a lead role, the Rom... supporting at best?) but I enjoy Wimbledon too. I'm not sure why, I don't think it's anything special on paper; it might just be the charm and chemistry of the leads, Paul Bettany and Kristen Dunst, both of whom kill it. (Also, James McAvoy plays Bettany's brother and Nicolai Coster-Waldau (sp?) plays his best friend. Before either got that big so their roles aren't that important, but it's always kinda cool to see actors you recognize in small roles like that.)
I love your videos, this is the second one I’ve watched where your enthusiasm for something (in this case the Tennant/Tate version) has made me go and look up how I can watch it asap! I haven’t seen that version but I’m really looking forward to it now 😁
ok finished the video and i'm so glad i never wasted my time and watched this movie!! it sounds absolutely infuriating. also i cannot stress enough how deeply excited i am for your much ado but nothing retelling; i just KNOW it'll be absolutely sublime! also i've watched a few videos at this point about "the death of the rom-com genre" and 100% plan to read from hollywood with love: the rise and fall (and rise again) of the romantic comedy by scott meslow as every video i've watched discussing the downfall of rom coms has mentioned this book as an excellent source. i really really really hope good rom coms can make a resurgence some point soon, mostly because i love the genre but also because obviously, the most famous rom coms tend to center on straight, cis, white, able-bodied neurotypical people, and lord knows we need to shake things up a little and get some more films that showcase love stories from across the spectrum of identity and experience of human existence! and yes i am biased being a dominican-american neurodivergent trans man lesbian who has never felt totally represented onscreen but who gaf i'm right
would read anything you wrote in the romantic com genre (but especially much ado) and yes, about the tennant and tate version. for years, YEARS, I adored the emma thompson one, but then I saw The Doctor and Donna do an 80s inspired stage version and haven't looked back. god i love them so much.
I wrote a miscommunication fic and was so proud when the main comment I got was "I usually hate this BUT" That being said...I spent FOREVER on trying to make it good because omg stories like this drive me nutssssss
Thank you for putting this video out for us despite the uncomfortable heat and conditions. ❤ You're on of the few UA-camrs who is so charismatic, thay I get excited for every video you release. 😊
i was going to wait until i watched the entire video to comment as i was sure i'd have my own thoughts once i heard all of what you had to say (despite the fact that i have not seen anyone but you and it has been years since i saw much ado about nothing) but you just mentioned manny montana as benedick and i just like imploded a little. i need that i need that i need that NOW, and for beatrice to also be played by a latine actor & for it to just be a super latino modern version cause i would die of happiness
Omg ur video is great! Also i love david Tennant and need to watch this adaptation RIGHT NOW. Also also ots so cool when creators i like watch the same things as i do. Also youre absolutely correct Izzy and Brennan would make such a good Benedict and Beatrice! Maybe Chanse and Arasha too??
@talistheintrovert hm that would be interesting for sure! Also Angela and Chanse have a similar bickering dynamic Also I read Much ado about nothing bc of your vid and it is now Also my favorite play. So thank you!
You should watch Bad Buddy and The Heart Killers. Both are modern spins on Shakespeare classics (Romeo and Juliet and Taming of the Shrew). Both are tv shows so it’s loose adaptations but very interesting spins with direct connects to Shakespeare
I remember really liking the Shakespeare Re-Told episode of Much Ado. I haven’t seen it since Netflix still sent DVDs by mail, so it’s time to see if it holds up!
Much Ado About Nothing is one of my favorites, along with Twelfth Night, but I think you're right - when adapting it for modern day, there is no reason to have the love interests be aristocracy, bougie or wealthy-beyond-measure. Meeting new people is no longer dependent on travel due to high city densities, and witticisms aren't restricted to the well-bred/well-read. I love While You Were Sleeping and both Pullman and Bullocks characters are random nobodies who you're rooting to fall in love with one another.
Came into this hoping to see this bad netflix get dragged didn't expect a passionate advertisement for 2000's rom coms but I have some deep diving to do.
Would you be interested in doing a formula of the perfect rom-com according to you? Like a breakdown of set rom-com beats (e.g. the meet-cute) featuring the ones that bring you joy. Like writers, here's how to write an amazing rom-com featuring examples of the Mummy (and other movies that bring joy) but also here's things that are just lovable about this thing?
we did much ado about nothing! when i was in theater camp. man, shakespeare is always fun. Romeo and Juliet is still bad. I want to see your verison!! :3
So I'm eager to witness your eventual adaptation of Much Ado -- but as another gay af lady who reads Shakespeare for fun (what other reason is there?) now I'm curious about who could make a brilliant modern interpretation of Titus Andronicus... 🤔 We absolutely do need to bring back good rom-coms!
Much Ado About Nothing is my absolutely favorite Shakespeare play too. When I heard they were coming out with a modern day adaptation I lost my freaking mind! I even avoided the trailer for the longest time because I didn’t want spoilers but my wife wanted to see the trailer before I preordered my tickets. The trailer made it immediately clear this was going to be a horrible movie. It was such a heartbreaking moment. I still refuse to watch it. I can’t believe the opportunity to have this was wasted and I really hope someone tries again soon.
12:00 may be this movie was targeted towards the consumers of movies who have watched movies(individually different) less 100 times in their whole lifetime and non English global Netflix audience(not all).just marvel movies are famous around the world for a reason it's the marvel movie version of romcom. 19:04 also Glenn Powell looks like an unc in comparison to Sydney 😂
I absolutely hated this movie for all the same reasons as you. But also because of the droves of people that went to see it in the theater like it was the best movie ever made. I am adamant that it wouldn't have grossed so much if not for the writer's strike. Nothing else was coming out at the time, so it was either this crap or Aquaman or Migration. (I almost forgot this was a Christmas release as we still had it playing through Valentines)
wow your casting choices were so obviously excellent out the gate that the LITANY became its own kind of running gag, just driving home how tedious, bland and banal hollywood is - but then that crescendo with Brennan and Izzy?! i want it SO BAD how did that never occur to me?
(Re: You faving the David Tennant and Catherine Tate version) You are a person of good taste I see! I wanted to ask, have you seen the ShakespeaRE:Told adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing where it's set in a news reporting studio? I quite liked that one, but it's not a film, but a movie-length episode, so it may have missed your film viewing list--it might be a good palette cleanser after your experience. Thank you for the video!
I haven't watched the video yet, but I wholeheartedly agree with this title. I've come to appreciate Glenn Powell after watching this movie, HitMan was hilarious and Twisters was fun, but anyone but you really bothered me. Just lazy writing. The final scene, we all know it, the hero runs off to catch his love interest and profess his love to them, I just felt NOTHING, like NOTHING. it landed flat, to me.
I watched this movie on a flight...yeah it was definitely not worth seeing in theatres. I also don't like the first 11 mins of this film. Their meet-cute is framed as a serendipitous interaction with chemistry and witty banter. What chemistry? What wit? It feels like the characters are talking about nothing. Their conversation is like the AI version of witty banter. Personally, I would like to see a modern adaptation of Much ado about Nothing where Ben and Beatrice are in academia. Bonus points if they're Shakespeare scholars bickering about his work. I would eat that shit up. As a fellow Shakespeare fangirl I love your analysis of the adaptation ❤.
Okay, I'm only 18 minutes into the video, but having recently seen Nobody Wants This on Netflix, may I suggest Adam Brody as Benedick? And also Kristen Bell as Beatrice? I think they would be great! Anyway, gonna watch the rest of the video now. Edit: holy shit your suggestion of Robbie Amell is genius! I am now sad this isn't real!
ALSO I RECORDED A WHOLE BIT FOR THE END ABOUT HOW INSTEAD OF THIS MOVIE YOU SHOULD ALL GO AND WATCH "THE HEART KILLERS" WHICH IS A GAY, THAI REMAKE OF TAMING OF THE SHREW WHERE THE SIBLINGS ARE HITMEN, AND THEN I FORGOT TO ADD IT IN.

It's honestly disappointing to learn that it really isn't, especially with it doubly-serving as a supposed Shakespeare adaptation. 🤷♀
Mr Right is a perfect movie fr, one of my favourites, I see you are a person of immense taste 🙏
Based on the title, I resent that I will not be able to sit down and watch this for another 7.5 hours.

I love your videos, this is the second one I’ve watched where your enthusiasm for something (in this case the Tennant/Tate version) has made me go and look up how I can watch it asap! I haven’t seen that version but I’m really looking forward to it now 😁
that's so wonderful to hear!! 🥰🥰
ok finished the video and i'm so glad i never wasted my time and watched this movie!! it sounds absolutely infuriating. also i cannot stress enough how deeply excited i am for your much ado but nothing retelling; i just KNOW it'll be absolutely sublime! also i've watched a few videos at this point about "the death of the rom-com genre" and 100% plan to read from hollywood with love: the rise and fall (and rise again) of the romantic comedy by scott meslow as every video i've watched discussing the downfall of rom coms has mentioned this book as an excellent source. i really really really hope good rom coms can make a resurgence some point soon, mostly because i love the genre but also because obviously, the most famous rom coms tend to center on straight, cis, white, able-bodied neurotypical people, and lord knows we need to shake things up a little and get some more films that showcase love stories from across the spectrum of identity and experience of human existence! and yes i am biased being a dominican-american neurodivergent trans man lesbian who has never felt totally represented onscreen but who gaf i'm right
would read anything you wrote in the romantic com genre (but especially much ado) and yes, about the tennant and tate version. for years, YEARS, I adored the emma thompson one, but then I saw The Doctor and Donna do an 80s inspired stage version and haven't looked back. god i love them so much.
I wrote a miscommunication fic and was so proud when the main comment I got was "I usually hate this BUT"
That being said...I spent FOREVER on trying to make it good because omg stories like this drive me nutssssss
YESSSSSS THAT'S THE BEST PRAISE OMG
@@talistheintrovert RIGHT?!?! Gonna print it off and keep it with the fanart people have made for me i STG
I saw the community post so I am commenting to boost engagement as much as I can ❤
I actually just recently starred in a local production of The Tempest so I have Shakespeare brain at the moment lol
OH HELL YEAH
Thank you for putting this video out for us despite the uncomfortable heat and conditions. ❤
You're on of the few UA-camrs who is so charismatic, thay I get excited for every video you release. 😊
that is the height of compliments, thank you so much!! 🥰🥰🥰
The Wedding Singer is such a slay too omg
fuck yeah it is!!
While You Were Sleeping is my absolute favorite rom com ♥️♥️ Please finish your version of Much Ado cause I’m now dying to read it

OH MY GOD Izzy & Brennan I need it NOW
YESSSSS 👏👏👏
i was going to wait until i watched the entire video to comment as i was sure i'd have my own thoughts once i heard all of what you had to say (despite the fact that i have not seen anyone but you and it has been years since i saw much ado about nothing) but you just mentioned manny montana as benedick and i just like imploded a little. i need that i need that i need that NOW, and for beatrice to also be played by a latine actor & for it to just be a super latino modern version cause i would die of happiness
Amazing video! but also holy shit I didn’t recognize you without the bangs and glasses. The Superman effect is real.
akdhshhsjs lol, I got contacts and forgot I had them in until I was editing and went "my face is missing something"
@ No because I was watching thinking “they look and sound familia,” but I’m glad we’re getting more content! This video was so fun to watch!
I mean, Straight Chanse? If we're picking smosh cast I'd probably pick Amanda and Angela lol
@talistheintrovert hm that would be interesting for sure! Also Angela and Chanse have a similar bickering dynamic
Also I read Much ado about nothing bc of your vid and it is now Also my favorite play. So thank you!
I crave your adaptation
ON IT, BOSS 🫡
You should watch Bad Buddy and The Heart Killers. Both are modern spins on Shakespeare classics (Romeo and Juliet and Taming of the Shrew). Both are tv shows so it’s loose adaptations but very interesting spins with direct connects to Shakespeare
I LITERALLY RECORDED A BIT WHERE I TALKED ABOUT THIS AND THEN FORGOT TO EDIT IT IN, I HATE MYSELF
I remember really liking the Shakespeare Re-Told episode of Much Ado. I haven’t seen it since Netflix still sent DVDs by mail, so it’s time to see if it holds up!
YESSSSS
Much Ado About Nothing is one of my favorites, along with Twelfth Night, but I think you're right - when adapting it for modern day, there is no reason to have the love interests be aristocracy, bougie or wealthy-beyond-measure. Meeting new people is no longer dependent on travel due to high city densities, and witticisms aren't restricted to the well-bred/well-read. I love While You Were Sleeping and both Pullman and Bullocks characters are random nobodies who you're rooting to fall in love with one another.
YESSSS, EXACTLYYYYY
The irritating thing about the clumsy girl archetype to me is that in reality, clumsiness is often due to undiagnosed ADHD with poor proprioception.
REAL
I will absolutely give you dollars in exchange for an updated Much Ado about Nothing novel, keep writing!

Did I just see Root from Person of Interest in one of those clips in the opening montage?????

I was legit clapping at the end when you were discussing better romcoms. I feel SEEN lol

Having had no idea that Will Gluck did easy a, when I heard of this movie I was wondering why the director of Peter Rabbit 2 was doing a rom com?

I saw Tate and Tennant's Much Ado live. Amazing experience, so good.
i have never been more jealous of another person in my LIFE 😭

thank you so much!!
please, yes, write your novel!

So I'm eager to witness your eventual adaptation of Much Ado -- but as another gay af lady who reads Shakespeare for fun (what other reason is there?) now I'm curious about who could make a brilliant modern interpretation of Titus Andronicus... 🤔
We absolutely do need to bring back good rom-coms!
give me like, five years and I'll totally get to it lol 🫡
I saw the trailers for this movie when it came out and the acting seemed so horrendous that I couldn’t bring myself to watch it
OOF, REAL
Now I want to read much ado about nothing, I forgot how funny it is
not enough people talk about how legit funny Shakespeare is fr
Much Ado About Nothing is my absolutely favorite Shakespeare play too. When I heard they were coming out with a modern day adaptation I lost my freaking mind! I even avoided the trailer for the longest time because I didn’t want spoilers but my wife wanted to see the trailer before I preordered my tickets. The trailer made it immediately clear this was going to be a horrible movie. It was such a heartbreaking moment. I still refuse to watch it. I can’t believe the opportunity to have this was wasted and I really hope someone tries again soon.

I was just watching your other videos when you uploaded this 😃
we love serendipity 🤌🤌🤌
OOOF SO TRUE
this was great! addictive watching. and ooh excited for that 12 monkeys video. maybe this'll be the kick I need to get around to finishing that show.
thank you!!
Re communication issues: think Every. Single. Episode. of Gossip Girl.
IUCH how is the acting in HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL even worse than I remember ?

you're so welcome 🫡
wow your casting choices were so obviously excellent out the gate that the LITANY became its own kind of running gag, just driving home how tedious, bland and banal hollywood is - but then that crescendo with Brennan and Izzy?! i want it SO BAD how did that never occur to me?
thank you so much, I had a lot of fun coming up with better choices lol, and then I was watching Make Some Noise and I was like "...let me cook"
I love your vocal co-host crow 😂
she was fully chatting to me fr
@@talistheintrovertshe was reacting to everything you were saying bish. She was shook and she was gagging
Thank you for the video!
yes!! that one is also pretty good!!
@@talistheintrovert Yay!!
YESSS EXACTLYYY
OMG give me give me give me Andy Samberg as Benedick 😭 now that you've said it I need it so much. also Emma D'arcy!!! omg 😮 you're a genius
As a fellow Shakespeare fangirl I love your analysis of the adaptation ❤.
oh my god academia Beatrice and Benedick would be AMAZINGGGG
Ncuti Gatwa ! Don’t make me screech!
IMAGINE??? IMAGINEEEEE???

I missed you! I haven’t gotten to Much Ado yet! I love a good adaptation (and hate an awful one). Loved your casting suggestions.
thank you!! 🥰🥰
I am now sad this isn't real!
oooh, also solid suggestions!!
Don't remind me about Shadow and Bone
