I am in my 70's now and I have been listening to Johnny Winter since the 1960's.
I am still amazed at how damn good everything sounds that he played. He can jam for a 10 minute tune and never sound boring or repetitious. His phrasing is so good. He was and always will be one of the very best and my overall personal favorite. He was at his best playing live, as he is here. And don't get me going on that bad joke called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And calling it a bad joke is just me being polite!

Saw Johnny in 1975 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, I remember J.Geils opened the show. I think Muddy might have played a set in the middle. Johnny was absolutely bigger than life. I remember at one point he sent the rest of the band offstage and whipped out his National Steel and played an acoustic blues set under the spotlight sitting on a stool. Then the band rejoined him onstage and he closed with something that just brought the house down. I've never seen anything close since.

Saw JW in the early 80's in Tucson
at Choo Choo's Great Train Robbery on N. 4th
I was sitting on the stage people were passing me joints and I would light them for them..
Johnny came on he asked me " Can I have a taste?"
He took a Bodacious Southern boy hit off of that joint it started playing blew me off the stage because I was sitting next to the monitors at one of the best personal rock concerts I have ever seen and I've seen many many many concerts! You know how that goes weed was synonymous with Tucson..✌ & 💞

      I saw Iron Butterfly, pre-fame Go-Go's , a smoking kickass
      ax-handler named Lita Ford,
A Boston reggae/ rock band called
The Rings.. that was the time when reggae was becoming popular in America.. The Wumbleys, Peter Rabbit from Dallas Visitor from Minnesota ,WOLFGANG ( I'm not positive but I think they were from globe-miami area) I later saw' from the band Wolfgang, Steve Plunkett and Randy Rand on MTV in a band called Autograph.. They played
      " Turn Up the Radio"(?)
Plus MANY MANY more bands I don't (can't) recall..
Choo choos was definitely one of the premiere rock and roll clubs in the Southwest.. It was small but it fucking rocked.. Good memories!
      ✌&💞 to you and yours
( it's going to be 4 p.m. in Tucson currently..Dammit, now I have to go to the store and get a 30 pack of Bud Light and crank up my UA-cam Tunes)

Holy Mother of God. Johnny was and will always be the king of Rock-Blues. Love JH, SRV, Roy B, Rory. And this cat was the Mack Daddy. I love how he completely slays the lead part of Gimmie Shelter and makes it his own. He literally proceeds to make it better than any of the Stones guitarist could ever achieve. That shit’s straight up whack!

If Johnny had looked like Robert Plant or the other rock stars he would've shot straight to the top right out the gate. Because he didn't match the stereotypical pretty boy image most rock stars are cast in, the industry couldn't glamorize him enough to capitalize off him. Another problem was the fact that even though he actually played blues rock, he didn't want to be categorized as a rock guitarist, he instead wanted to be considered as a blues artist exclusively. The industry later became unkind to him (even though he held the record for being paid the largest record signup deal in history at that time, back when he first became known) because they saw no money in blues, or at least not the kind of money rock and pop genre's brought in. Because of that reason, or excuse, they didn't spend the time and money to promote him. That's why he never went to the top. However, among professional blues and rock guitar players he was always a legend, spoken of in awe and amazement, and NONE of them ever wanted to follow him onstage. He made enough money to keep his head above water and was happy with that, because, the ones he wanted admiration and respect from were his peers, the biggest players on the planet. Lol, and knowing that none of them ever wanted to follow him onstage didn't exactly hurt his ego either. Believe me, he got all the recognition he wanted from the very ones he wanted it from.
