    As a security person I am always wearing a belt so I can use it as a weapon. many self defense systems stress take always, which can be very dangerous. I teach the coin toss, beverage throw, clothing as weapons and magazine jab.

    Practical and realistic teaching. The best thing about a belt is that it's
    1. Accessable
    2. Legal yet Tactical
    3. It can probably threaten and scare off opponents on the street and end the fight without blood.

    What I carry on my belt for self defense is a solid one piece metal, welded belt buckle (no moving parts). It also adds a decent weight to the belt but is also easy to swing and maneuver. That buckle was given to me by my late step dad over 20 years ago and will far outlive me. I will never have to worry about it breaking or doing its job. It's intimidating just to look at! And it's also silent! Thanks for the video. Great demonstration!

    Your belt technique videos get many negative comments from people who have probably never actually seen the damage that a belt can cause in a fight. I've seen guys get their faces and foreheads split open with a belt buckle and they bled like stuck pigs and instantly retreated from the fight.
    You're always going to have these, woulda, coulda, shoulda guys, who can magically break down every blow of a fight, when they weren't even there: "I wish, I was there, when you got jumped. You should've just blocked all those kicks and punches, that those three guys were throwing at you. I could've easily taken those flimsy, little nunchuck and belt buckle strikes straight to my head. Then, I would've punched right past everything they threw at me and I would've put those three guys to sleep".
    Great plan. Except that nunchucks don't just weakly bounce off your face and head, like they do in the movies. They punch a little half moon, crescent shaped hole into your skin and blood quickly starts to pour out of your face or forehead. Which is why you never want to round the ends of a pair of chucks. Flattened ends cut the skin better.
    A leather belt with a heavy metal belt buckle is like striking someone in the head with a fishing weight, tied to a piece of rope or leather. It slices you open and it hurts like hell. I used to practice with a belt and buckle or with nunchucks, against trees. That way you can learn in the real world, how to handle the bounce backs and changes in direction, in live situations.
    All the fancy air spinning in the world, can't teach you how to return your weapon to the cocked or coiled position, after a weird bounce from an odd angle. It's like hitting a bag, versus shadow boxing. Except that your punches won't ever bounce in weird directions and fly back towards your face, when you hit a heavy bag. For this reason, you should focus on short, quick, effective single pops and returns to ready position, rather than a bunch of flashy spinning moves that mostly just look impressive.

    It seems like an effective technique, however I do wonder, is it worth it?
    Couldn't someone that is really keen on killing you ignore it and just run into it?
    I mean, sure, you'll probably be able to wack him once, but maybe you don't hit a vital spot, and now he's in your range and can start stabbing you... Isn't it a bit risky?

    • @jamessarvan7692
      @jamessarvan7692 9 років тому

      ***** Yes, yes, I got the general idea. I just mean that someone could probably charge you anyways, covering his head and just taking maybe a wack or two, but when his in your zone, he has the upperhand again. But I don't know!
      You are super pretty btw.

    • @Sakaki98
      @Sakaki98 9 років тому +11

      +James Sarvan Well, it depends on how you hit them, or rather, how hard. Remember that a lot of these belt buckles are made of metal, and hitting someone anywhere on the head(except, maybe, a very conditioned forehead) could kill them, especially when one considers the amount of momentum picked up just by the idle swinging demonstrated here. A powerful swing could get to speeds just short of that of a nunchuck which means that, with an average man's bodyweight behind it(assuming they have the proper technique), could easily shatter an entire forearm, let alone a hand raised to block. And then we have the surprise factor shown by the little trick using distance demonstrated by Nick here, so with the speed of the swing as well as the delayed reaction that comes with the only two possible conditions that could lead to the level of aforementioned pain tolerance and/or negligence(being insanity and anger, with clear thinking being impossible in both cases. Fight or flight response wouldn't really apply as their the ones trying to kill you in a scenario in which you have a belt and they have a weapon of some kind, meaning there isn't enough fear to be able to trigger adrenaline to a level above minor excitement), which would inevitably lead to a you landing a hit that can kill with very little, if any at all, reaction on the opposite end. It can be a bit risky if you're not experienced, or if you don't make full use of the surprise factor and commit fully to the strike. Of course, what I'm getting at is that as long as you know what you're doing, then under these kinds of circumstances, the kind of failure you're depicting is incredibly low in likelihood given the established parameters. However, if that small percentage of failure in which you don't get the OHK still bothers you, then I urge you to keep in mind that the part that you're striking with is the metal part. It's an object that is blunt, not unlike bone- the material which you will be theoretically striking- and so if they continue to charge in the event that you're attack fails, it's very easy to maintain the high levels of momentum by utilizing the ricochet that comes with the blunt nature of the two objects of impact. With this in mind, assuming you're not even moving back, a decently skilled and experienced individual using the belt can land 3-5 strikes before the attacker can close in- just because of the lack of speed loss from each impact(in some cases, very skilled practitioners of blunt weapons can actually gain speed from said impact, provided they maintain enough control and reflexive precision). The margin of error is very large in this case with the weapon alone. Then, you've gotta consider one of the points that Nick drove home in this video:
      You can use your legs and arms if the need arises.
      If they come within your belt's effective range, then you can always use your knees, elbows, and (somewhat limited)grappling. And in that case, you've already landed those deadly shots with the belt, meaning the disorientation from blood loss, the aforementioned states of mind required for such pain negligence under this circumstance, the concussive nature of blunt blows to the head or the lack of leftover bone durability from blunt blows, will leave you at an undeniable advantage, provided you know what you're doing when it comes to knife-defense(and no, I don't mean fantasy battles where you lock the knife into the belt hole and somehow disable them in some unrealistic movie battle. I mean joint locks, experience in disarming, having practiced with or against weapon using arts such as Kali or Eskrima, etc).
      Hope this helps out and relieves you of some of your doubts. :)

    Great video and a lot of interesting comments. One of the unique qualities of a belt is the sound it can make. If you use a belt with enough velocity to your side, the speed and sound alone will intimidate most adversaries. Unlike your lesson this can effectively be done with even a lightweight belt buckle. The proper position in that scenario is left side forward in a fighting stance with your right wrist swinging the belt to your side. This is also an easier position to inflict rapid cross-strikes when needed. However the sound alone coupled with a few angry commands such as, "Back off!" will allow you to form a wider perimeter against someone who may have a weapon.

  • @ArcticGator
    @ArcticGator 9 років тому +22

    Another way to use a belt is if you have a heavy leather belt is to hold both ends of the belt in one hand and strike with the edge of the belt instead of the flat, it can almost cut like a knife and is pretty numbing to get hit with, against the face it will cut and might even break the temple.

    I just tried equipping my belt as a weapon as I was watching the vid. I have a quick release buckle that you can easily unlock with one hand, so I was surprised how quickly I could get it from my suspending pants to being ready to bash some heads in a fight. Less than half a second.
    As you said, it's also a great choice for multiple attackers, 'cause it's a great tool to even the odds.

    Great video. Loved the surprise extending belt trick, but you won't pull that off unless you see it coming way off, like you said.
    I prefer to hold it loosely in my right hand and control the length with my left. I'm right handed and assuming most attackers will also be, it puts a thick strap shield across my torso that I can use as added defense to block knife hand wrists without exposing the very vulnerable forearm to cuts.

      Yes, it is, as long as your pants aren't large enough that they fall down when you take the belt out! That would really cramp your ability to move!

    what i would like to add if being attacked with a knife its a lot better to target the hand than the head its closer and you can stop a fight with a lot less damage

    Most who have the guts to enter (rushing in mostly) use the lead hand sticking out for being entangled. If that happens and you have wrapped the belt around your own hand you are more fixed then the opposition .
    It's like tonfa in whirling - good, as long as it intimidates.

    • @knownanonymous8802
      @knownanonymous8802 6 років тому

      There's a trade-off with every weapon. You can have your knife disarmed and now your opponent has it; if they get too close you can't use a long stick and that stick can be jammed up against your body or used to leverage your wrists; brass knuckles have a very limited range and have been known to break the hand of the people punching with them; so forth so forth. It's too easy to point out just the pros or cons of a weapon, rather than looking at the big picture.

    I fought against an attacker in the street who were using the belt as weapon. He hadn't the opportunity to hit me with his first strike because I closed the distance very quickly and striked him in the face with a fist but the belt came back from the behind of my head and hitted me. It cutted the skin causing a bleeding but I was able to continue the fight. The attacker fled away after he fell down to the ground twice because of my strokes. Difficult defend yourself against a belt.

    What if your belt buckle is one that snaps on or whatever like a real belt. Wouldn't the buckle just fly off ? Do you need one of the belts like he has in the video? Or does any belt work?

      If you want to grapple with a belt or rope you can easily choke the other person, I wouldn't bother sending them to the floor on a street fight.

    im no expert but I assume a belt has one opportunity against a aggressive striker or someone that wants to tackle you or do a single/ double leg takedown.

      If you had a leather belt then try holding both ends of the belt in one hand and use the side of the belt instead of the flat side. It would probably cut the offender of it was thick enough. This could also be used as a choker with a cutting edge

    FUKIN REMARKABLE!
    THERE are a number of things to use in case of the worst. But a belt is a solid idea in case of a situation occurs. sometimes I like my pants a slight bit loose. but not foolishly. A person can wear 2belts if the pant fits baggy etc. I've also seen where you can use a USB long cord as such, hidden within the belt or pant. I myself don't like to use knifes. And this is a excellent idea.
    Thanx!

    if i were against a belt, id consider sticking out my leg (trying to time it away from the buckle as best as i could) to interrupt it. it would tangle around my leg, i could pull him down while planting my feet and begin striking. does this seem like it could work if you were against the belt?

    but what if the person is crazy enough to enter the circle. will the belt will knock him out ? or will the belt even make him drop his knife if it hit is hand ? but its way much better then facing a knife wielding opponent empty hand and a very obvious thing to do.

      ***** There are different ranges to fighting. Knives are meant for up close. Belts are meant to keep your drawers around your waist. If I had a knife and he had a belt, I would just rush him, take one whap to the face, laugh and stab him in the heart, while twisting the knife.
      I pray no one takes this guys advice. The second I see him in a real fight, against a real fighter, I'll shut up

    • @cromlech6167
      @cromlech6167 8 років тому

      AltaMirage Yeah, no shit. Dude has watched to many Van Damme movies. I could see him practicing using a belt in front of one of those full size mirrors, in his tidy whiteys.
      Believe me Susan, if dude has a knife, he's not going to be scared off by a belt. You would want more like a bat vs a knife...or just give the crazy crackhead your wallet and swallow your pride.
      BTW, this whole "belt defense thing" is all ripped off from a classic Jet Li movie called "Fist Of Legend".
      I guarantee a blue belt teenager in my jiu jitsu class would hip toss this fool and choke him into complete submission within seconds. I can tell from his dough-ey posture and lack of killer instinct
