I can't understand why anybody ever voted for New Street. I avoid changing through there as much possible. The platforms are frequently packed, when changing you have to go through barriers twice, for no apparent reason, not handy if you have more than one bag and have 5 minutes to get across the station for a connection. Temple Meads is an incredible gothic cathedral, right round the corner from the city centre. Frequent railtours make things interesting too. Huddersfield outside is visually stunning too AND has cats and pubs. Haven't had the pleasure of Wemyss.
New Street is/was awful, especially that thing of split platforms with a train departing from each end, very confusing, not to mention the smoky diesel loco I always seemed to have to stand next to, ticking over and choking everyone. Not a good idea in an underground, enclosed space. Huddersfield, though, at the end of the Ale Trail, magnificent building and two cracking pubs, what's not to love!
Top tip if you don't like going through the barriers while changing there. Go to the B end of the platforms where you can access all 12 platforms without passing through a gate line. Bigger toilets that end, too ✌️
It was considered for the building's unusual multi-functionality. Unlike many stations which have shops inside, New St is right inside a shopping centre & the easiest way to walk from north to south of the city centre (walking around adds about 5-10 minutes). It therefore moves passengers from where they were to where they want to go (the whole point of a railway station) better than any other. Its aesthetics were not what it was on the short-list for.
There is two bridges at the B end. One links Hill Street to Navigation Street in Birmingham. Barriers only for exiting to those roads. Also the B end bridge to the concourse. So you can change trains without using gates. So don't use the A end of the station. If you get off the train at say 5A, walk down to 5B.
Edinburgh Waverley is right in the City Centre too. Can't get more central than one exit right onto Princess Street and another that's literally a two minute walk from the Royal Mile.
Yeah, that was a weird thing that guy said. Manchester’s TWO stations are right in the city centre as are, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow Central, Newcastle, ...
Why was new street even in the list. New street is a horrible, ugly, over crowded, over complicated station with constant delays, platform alterations and cancelations.
New Street and nearby Snow Hill could potentially have been shortlisted in the 1950s, before their demolition and replacement. Moor Street, on the other hand... (especially since Chiltern restored the original station)
London has a Station right in the center, Charing Cross, 200 metres from the center of London, Trafalgar Square, formally Charing Cross as 6 streets meet there. It is where all distances from London are measured from.
The famous station cats definitely pushed Huddersfield over the top. But it's not *just* the cats: it also takes a Feline P.R. department to establish a gigantic cult of celebrity cats around them too. Books, toys, articles and the press, fundraisers and so on. Good for Felix and Bolt.
I was using those tunnels in the early 1970's when i worked there. Not only did Royal mail use it, it was also used by the Parcels which was based in the Parcels Office on Platform 12. One of the most unusual things I had to move through those tunnels was coffins (occupied) because many Irish People who lived in Birmingham would often send their bodies home to be buried. I used to have to escort the coffins from platform 12, through the tunnels on to Platform 6 where they would be handed over to the Guard on the Holyhead Boat Train for transport to Ireland. I had to make sure that the Guard signed for them before they where loaded onto the train.
Birmingham Station in the city centre? I could hardly find an exit when I was unfortunate enough to arrive there in the summer! Be careful what you wish for. I thought the station was bad before, but it's infinitely worse now, and the platforms are still claustrophobic. Definitely would have gone for Weymss Bay. Not only can you find your way out, it is such an elegant design.
I get what you mean Gill. You can't see the outside when you reach the concourse. Nor is it a terminus so there isn't one end for entry/exit. A couple of fairly small entrance/exits (for the size of station) rather than one large, main point.
@@DerekHartley many, many times. I regularly change trains there. The idea of "main entrance" is confusing. I assume you're meaning the side that opens out towards the bull ring with TK Maxx outside? Yet for most stations the "main entrance" would be the one with the tram stop outside and opening on to the actual Street it's named after. It's more confusing for people with the number of other exits from grand Central on the level above. Plus that itself allows you to connect across and through the Bull Ring to opposite Moor Street without having to go outside.

The tunnels at New Street once went to the main Post Office, which is now the Mailbox Shopping Centre. The Post Office moved out to Newtown, no where near a Railway line, so post all goes by road now! Grrrrrh!
There might be more than on tunnel under the platforms at New Street, but public access down there used to be possible. The only way to have lift access from street to platform was to go via the tunnel. I did this about 10 years ago when I changed at New Street with my bicycle. No longer allowed since the rebuild in 2015, as all platforms now have lift access direct to concourse level.
Nice to see the tunnel under New Street station again. In the days of TPOs we were guests of Royal Mail to photograph the TPOs and used the tunnel to get from one platform to another as well as getting to the then Royal Mail building

Clifton Down 5. Parson Street 6 Bedminster 7. Sea Mills 8. Shirehampton 9. Redland and of course 10. Bristol Temple Meads
i had to use birmingham new street in sept when my train from manchester to reading was cancelled but the train started at birmingham i found new street station complicated to get round and the platform levels very noisy not good for people with disabilities
Not surprised Bristol Temple Meads came in last, after years of underinvestment. It's the Poundland of railways stations. In the last 30 years the only new infrastructure is some new ticket barriers to the left and right of the main entrance. There is no retail in and around the station unlike the brand new Birmingham New Street and the only shop is a small WHSmith in the main entrance. The forecourt is a crowded mess (unhelped by Bristol City Council's new road traffic management). The planned electrification from London Paddington with the rumoured relaunch of the original Brunel Passenger Shed for London trains was cancelled when electrification stopped at Chippenham. This station servers over 15 million people annually and deserves better.
whom could possibly have nominated Birmingham (new street) over Birmingham (moor street) also, I don't understand why the same trains have different names?
I'm going to vote for the forgotten stations of Coastway West, between Brighton and Portsmouth. They have had delays, all sorts of problems, strikes, etc etc, but the staff have been great despite all the complaints. The stations are not great architecture, and don't have much of a Brunel vibe about them. But, you know, they get me to work, and the electrostar trains are a nice place to spend an hour.
New Street - one of the worst stations on the network for catching trains - dark, smelly, smoky and poorly accessible for changing trains. The newish gate lines make no sense.
We hate New Street for changing trains and avoid it if at all possible. Also you have to leave the platforms and trek quite a distance with luggage to find a cafe for a snack. We much prefer to change at Wolverhampton or Birmingham International.

Most people vote for the hometown station. Interesting fact, my hometown of Portsmouth has four stations in our city, beat that!
Hilsea should probably be worth negative points...
@@ToXikyogHurt Sure it is a small station and only has one ticket machine and nothing else but i have seen far worse stations.
Nice bit channelling The Two Ronnies @ the end...
Bristol can beat Portsmouth by a long stretch lol they have 10 stations in the City not including Bristol Parkway. (In no particular order) 1. Lawrence Hill 2. Stapleton Road, 3. Montpelier 4. Clifton Down 5. Parson Street 6 Bedminster 7. Sea Mills 8. Shirehampton 9. Redland and of course 10. Bristol Temple Meads
@@jgodfrey546 And a bit of Eric and Ernie, surely?
It's a *poll* not a "pole"
Euston or Kings X?🤔
I miss the "secret tunnel" at BHM, it always used to be the quickest way to get between platforms. Shame you're not allowed to use it anymore
Writing this before I know who's won but Huddersfield looks amazing such a brilliant frontage
i had to use birmingham new street in sept when my train from manchester to reading was cancelled but the train started at birmingham i found new street station complicated to get round and the platform levels very noisy not good for people with disabilities
Best sign-off ever.
Its been over 26yrs, but I have been to Huddersfield-I have friends there.
whom could possibly have nominated Birmingham (new street) over Birmingham (moor street)
also, I don't understand why the same trains have different names?
Newport (South Wales) would win the leakiest station award in Britain, when it rains. Lakes form on the platforms.
Glasgow Central as the name implies could not be any more Central also Queen St is also in the centre of the city
Edinburgh Waverley is in the city centre = just go up the steps and bingo - Princes Street, gardens, museums, the lot!!
I voted it was very difficult for me because I love both Bristol temple meads and Birmingham New Street for different reasons
third finger left hand. plain gold ring. are congratulations in order Vicki?
I'm going to vote for the forgotten stations of Coastway West, between Brighton and Portsmouth. They have had delays, all sorts of problems, strikes, etc etc, but the staff have been great despite all the complaints. The stations are not great architecture, and don't have much of a Brunel vibe about them. But, you know, they get me to work, and the electrostar trains are a nice place to spend an hour.
Pretty shocking that St Pancras didn't make the list. I don't think there is a station that even comes close.
Its not Birmingham New st anymore😭, its now Birmingham Grand Central🙄😠
Another great video.
I just want to measure my local station. How many tennis courts to a football pitch please?
three double-deckers!
They should honor Huddersfield Railway Station's win be removing the ticket barriers to people who don't wish to travel can enjoy the railway station.
very surprised Birmingham New Street made the final three when on the platforms there is no public toilets and it's a big black hole
It was the final four but I agree with your sentiment. And there was sod all parking the last time I had the displeasure of passing through it.
That's horrible; no toilets, just a big black hole. Eugh!
I`m sorry, "only station actually in a city centre"????? 4:27 How many stations can i list to say a huge NO!
The kittens are so cute!
Is the World Cup of Stations award the "Jules Railway Trophy"
you went to find felix the station cat!
Where is #WeStopAtNothing all the platform zeros
