Wampler Euphoria Overdrive Pedal, John Mayer Tones

    The Euphoria is my take on that elusive tone and feel made famous by "Dumble style Amplifiers" - smooth creaminess yet crunchy when you need it to be, yet the tonality is much more transparent than other “Dumble sounding" pedals. Very responsive tone controls that interact with the pedal - they don't just “color” the sound. The controls actually affect the response and feel of the pedal, just like a great tube amp.
    If you love the sound of your clean tone, and just wish you could have more “hair” on the note... a little bit of grit without any change in tonality, the Euphoria will do that with ease. PLUS it's extremely flexible... with the toggle switch in the down position you'll get a hint of fuzz along with the overdrive, it's reminiscent of the tones that "Eric Johnson" may use. With the toggle in the up position the tonality is super smooth, creamy yet crunchy when you dig into the strings.
    This is reminiscent to the famous “D style” tone, though it's really much, much more than that. In the center position, the toggle will give you tons of crunch, or roll the gain back a bit and push the volume up and you have a superior clean boost with a 2 band EQ that's extremely transparent, but variable so you can actually turn it into an awesome treble booster just by cranking up the treble and turning the bass down.

    Great pedal at 9 volts, awesome at 18 volts! This pedals "blooms" when you push 18 volts through it. Kudos to Wampler for putting out such a versatile pedal that gives Stratocasters and Fender amps that much appreciated edge.

    Nailed the base Dumble/Two rock tone perfectly, and aded even more to it.
    Love this one. It is the only overdrive on my board - although I see it more as a preamp in smooth mode to sweeten up my Deluxe Reverb. Great job Wampler!

    Ive had mine for over a year? now. Love it. I couldnt live without it. It sounds amazing on its own thru all my guitars amps, and stacking it with various overdrives creates so many different tasty tones, its kinda surreal. Stacked with the RedWitch Famulus or the El Musico Loco's Ole Glass Fuzz, is pure ninja tone magick. Glorious. Hashbrown yummy.

      Ross Hobson wow, that's a tough question. They are so different. It would have to depend on what you are playing. I always have one on my board. And it's always dead even. Here's an answer. Get the Euphoria first. Then if you need some good warmth or a boost get the Tumnus later. Just remember. The BASS on the Euphoria is very, very touch sensitive. Keep it way down, like 10:00.

    • @wampler_pedals
      @wampler_pedals  9 років тому +1

      Brian Cullen Yeah, the bass does add bottom end, but it's gone PLENTY of bottom to go, it also adds a bit more sag as you turn the bass up. My personal fav is with the bass all the way down (which is what I'd call the "neutral" position).

    • @soundknight
      @soundknight 9 років тому +1

      ***** Yeah I couldnt get it past quarter way so it was fine, if it sits exactly where you want it and youve got room for a thin sounding guitars bass boost then its pretty amazing, Ive always wondered why you engineered it with SOOOOO much bass though....

    • @wampler_pedals
      @wampler_pedals  9 років тому

      Brian Cullen depending on the player, some guys just like the ability to add more bass which adds more 'creaminess' to it.

  • @joshdeal575
    @joshdeal575 5 років тому

    Fun video. I like to go back to it every now and then. So anyway, looking to change up my overdrive flavors and get something not directly tubescreamer related. This seems different enough to be worth trying, but still has a smooth breakup to it. Think it would compliment a JHS Morning Glory?
    Also, have you guys ever considered a church players oriented video, at least as far as overdrive pedals and stacking? There is probably a decent enough niche on youtube who would be interested to see how your dirt pedals would sound in a modern P&W church setting (although I think you make enough quality things that you seriously cover enough bases for ANY player).

    Loved it and had it but there's something noisy in the upper harmonics that put me off after a while. Yes it is very Mayer ala Two Rock sounding. I'm looking forward to a Wampler update to this one perhaps with a brighter but also smoother top end.

    • @wampler_pedals
      @wampler_pedals  9 років тому

      Brian Cullen Thanks for your comment Brian - curious, what kind of amp where you using with it? Shouldn't have had any weird artifacts in the highs unless you had the tone control all the way up. Also, what kind of guitar are you using?

    • @soundknight
      @soundknight 9 років тому

      There's some complicated question and answers. Tele copy by Levinson -Blade Delta with Fralin/Analogman Jim Weider Pickups. Also a PRS clone that sounds better than a PRS - Cort M900 with Mojotone classic PAFs Alnico 4 hot wound. Into an Ulbrick Arena 50, Bassman Plexi copy with GLKT66 poweramp tubes and NOS RCA long and short grey plate pre tubes.
      I don't think its anything wrong with the pedal, its the sound of the components inside it (its natural sound) because I hear it in other Wampler pedals too. I have the Faux Tape Echo WHICH IS STELLAR, it doesn't seem to have that sound but that could be to do with the digital circuitry but videos of other Wamplers pedals and my mates V1 Hotwired and Ego Comp have it. Its not broken its just something in the 'Timbre' of the components that gets to me and I personally think of it as noisy because thats the only way I can describe it (its a semi subtle sound like timbres are).
      Love the pod cast by the way.

    Not feelin' it. How dare I, in the midst of the hurricane of hype?? Nothing personal, this seems to be a pervasive phenomenon about not only devices but tone itself!! Whilst a huge (yuge) bundle of teens are trying to look (sound) cool there gets to be omissions from the list of great, all time tones: Ritchie Blackmore, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Pete Townshend, Mick Taylor, Carlos Santana, and for example that rhythm tone on "Paint it Black". Of course Jimi Hendrix is on the list - how could possibly be ignored? So . . . Why would they want tone a tone that cannot be used for, say perhaps, expression? Doesn't matter if grandpa or junior swipe the strings, it sounds . . . that same. I mean c'mon, Hetfields tone is in fact, LOUSY. But more to the point here (finally) is when it comes down to the actual elements of the 'distorted' tone is the brittle, course frequency spikes of the saturation. The tones too, usually sound animec sterile and lifeless. Yes there are some controls over odd, even and symmetrical, asymmetrical harmomics etc. but the technology has yet to stuff a 'live' and active transient/sustain envelope without the distortion of the otherwise pristine tone of the instrument, . . . into a small device at you feet. The IR's might do well to be as comprehensive for amp/speaker/cabinet as for reverb such as Ocean Way or Altiverb. Could there be ultra fine elements - beyond the "Tubescreamer" or 'fuzz'?? I think the Ovaltone's "Fountain" is a step in that direction. The DV Mark GH250 for those of us fusion players. Just sayin'.

  • @BluesLicks101

    What's a "John Mayer" tone? Seriously... every tone he uses is HEAVILY copied from the original work of others! I appreciate he's a gear head, and has a good ear but in the grand scheme he's a replicant, an artisan rather than an artist: very derivative and not very creative tonally.

    • @joeycomstock5481

      I hope you realize that every guitar player has copied one before him/her. People like to say he copies Stevie Ray but no one likes to bring up that SRV got a lot of his licks from Albert King. Everyone is inspired by someone.

    • @agrodocsss
      @agrodocsss 7 років тому +1

      Joey Comstock You are right, but SRV copied Albert King note-by-note. Apart that, he always stated AK was his greatest hero, but his gear was totally different (never seen SRV playing a Gibson Flying V, and their amps were totally different a well). That's the difference between being inspired by someone else and act like 'wannabe'. Let me also point out that I respect John Maier, even if he's not my cup of thea.

      Joey Comstock
      I think the point here is that Stevie absorbed Albert stuff but he didn't SOUND like Albert he sounded like Stevie. With John Mayer there can be more of a feeling of ah here is the B.B. moment ah, there is the Stevie moment, and hey ho here comes the Clapton moment. It's all very musical and well executed, but personally I don't get the same sense of a deep personal style and voice pulling it all together to form something else that has it's own truly unique thing. Really his best feature that way is his rythm and timing, like he is really a drummer in a guitarists body.
