I always appreciated the fact that they kept it fairly authentic to period in that the house was pretty small. Also, if you will notice, the ladies only had just a two or three dresses like they would have owned at that time. Even when Laura started teaching, she only had the one nice dress. I always appreciated that attention to detail.

Having grown up on a working farm the house was used mostly for eating and sleeping. The rest of the time was spent outside working. My Mum and Aunts spent the majority of the day preparing meals and washing up. I always liked this series as it depicted farm life quite accurately and showed how a good or bad crop decided if you would have a good or bad winter. Amazing tour ... right down to the crack in the plaster in the bedroom. This episode was spot on! Thank you as always for bringing so many great memories back. ❤🏡

It doesn't look to me like they would have had room.
But this wasn't the first family where the parents had to, shall we say, be very careful to keep an eye out for when the children were asleep. And they won't be the last. To this day, there are plenty of families in impoverished countries who live in huts where the parents deal with the same problem.

I worked graveyard many years ago, a co worker would give me a ride home every morning. While all I could think about was the bed, she'd rush home to watch reruns of Little House. I used to tease her and call it "Little shack in the middle of the desert". You did a great job as usual.

I bet part of the reason why this was one of the rare TV homes where the interior matched the exterior was because the house--and store and church--were so simple that it was much easier to get them to match up.

As I recall, Willy and Nellie's bedrooms were up those stairs in the mercantile, and the door in the back led to a very fancy parlor and dining room. I agree that the Ingalls home was by far the home-iest in all of Walnut Grove, because it was filled with so much family laughter and love. Thank you so much for making this video!

In 1976, I had the privilege of visiting the closed set of Little House on the Prairie. The layout of course was nothing like this as it had to be camera accessible. There were no "upstairs" rooms as I recall. The girls bedroom was on the same level as everything else. Even most, if not all outside scenes were filmed indoors for better sound control. Wouldn't want an airplane flying over while filming! Thank you for this wonderful rendition.

Why would you say that most, if not all, OUTDOOR scenes were shot indoors? That's not true at all! Unless you mean nighttime scenes. But no, outdoor scenes, like in the town of Walnut Grove, were mostly shot in Simi Valley, California... outdoors.

They kept it pretty true to the books as well...with one exception Laura describes that the upstairs also held a lot of their dried goods and food, she and Mary would use the pumpkins as stools and tables. The books are still some of my favorite.

Too bad they didn't make the loft like in On the Banks of Plum Creek. In that book the loft went across the whole length of the house..If they built the loft that way on Little House, the Ingallses would have had more room in the loft when they adopted Albert, and then James and Cassandra. They could have used half the loft for Albert and James, and half for Carrie and Cassandra.

Great work- I love what you do. This show was very much part of growing up for me; I would have been around Laura's age, and I watched, usually with my mom, from the pilot film on. I have a vivid memory- accurate or not- of the house being surrounded by wolves at night and the family trapped inside. Years later this came back to me in a dream in a very uncertain moment in my life. I was leaving for art school, across the country in California in a few days, extremely nervous about it, and I dreamed I was in that house, surrounded by wolves. Every time they attacked I had a perfect weapon in hand and everyone was safe. I woke up feeling great. It was my mind's way of telling me I was equal to the challenge and was going to be o.k. And I was...

What a great tour of Walnut Grove! Little House was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid. Although the house was modest, I'm sure it was built sturdy and well because Charles built it himself with all the integrity that was him. This house would probably sell in today's tiny house market, especially with those wood beams, hardwood floors and the sturdy materials that Charles would have used. Just needs an indoor bathroom!

Marina, have you considered doing the homes from Sarah Plain and Tall? There's four unique homes in that movie: Sarah's home with her brother Will in Maine and the home of her aunts next door along with Jacob Whitten's home, Matthew and Matggie's place, and like Little House, there's also astore. I'm sure it would be a big job, but such a beautifully done movie! Thank you for sharing your talents with us

I moved into a dorm in college in August 1985. Two of my fraternity brothers lived next door and they watched little house on the prairie every weekday from 2-3pm and we would go eat dinner at 3:30. We gave them a hard time for liking the show and they gave my roommate and I a hard time for watching the cartoon GI Joe from 3-3:30. They both graduated in May 1987 and 1 is a Facebook friend. I like to think they still watch it or have the whole series on DVD.

Impressive job, Marina! This has been a long time coming. I agree the set designers did a great job with LHOTP! The buildings were ingenious, and good point that the exteriors matched the interiors! So smart they made the church a multi-purpose building; makes total sense. The show’s sets have some of the best “sense of place”-to use the architectural term-of any television show! Loved that interview with Karen; she sure looks great for her age! I’m surprised you don’t have 10x the subscribers. But then maybe what you do here is more niche…Perhaps that makes it all the more special for us architectural aficionados.

If only parents today would incorporate these beautiful principal's and point their moral compass north to raise their children in this same pride and kindness. Although our technology and economies are much more advanced, it costs nothing to be humble and kind. Yet, it's at everyone's expense to have such an entitled and narcissistic filled society today. Grew up watching this show. The Ingalls house was so efficiently designed and you really got the sense that everything in it was made by one person.
And yes, even the other simple country homes always had a tiny bit of "luxury" the Ingalls never had, even if it was just a single plush chair or rooms separated by a door.
My favorite scenes always involved Mrs Olesen or Nellie. Plus I always had rather "fancy" taste as a child (🙄) so I enjoyed scenes in the Olesen's Victorian parlor.
Although I did think it'd be cool to have a loft bedroom!

Thanks for adding this one! Though the house was small it was so nice to see. I always kind of wondered if there was a wall between the parents' part of the back room and Carrie's, I guess there wasn't. So nice that you added the school/church and Oleson's Mercantile. Later they had a restaurant too, but that was much later. Love seeing these houses. Thanks for listening to our requests.

Thank you so much. The simplicity of the set design & decor certainly never overshadowed the characters. I saw the black horse thru the wavy glass window. Finding your details is a bonus - and a big thing in this were the delicate placement of shadows via t the school house windows. Really one of your best tours.

Another superb job! Such an enduring classic show. Its timeless. So remarkable with your designing expertise and highly interesting and nostalgic. Indeed, it was a small space but they were incredible in putting it altogether. I recall watching the pilot back in the day at my aunt and uncles. We were mesmerized and charmed. That pilot truly set the foundation not only for the house but the whole show.We learned about the strong faith and enduring spirit because indeed there were many tragedies and hardships. Carolyn and Charles complimented each other with love an optimistic thread that was always there. I also thought the horse was a sweet touch!

Just now seeing this video as I happened to come upon it. UA-cam doesn’t always seem to notify reliably. I was thinking that very thing that you stated; how the interiors and exteriors of these buildings matched. The set designers did a good job. Each of the buildings, especially the little house, were very unique, unforgettable, well designed! They all made total sense, each so functional, and feeling so real. That interview with Karen Grassle, which I previously watched, was great.

I grew up watching this TV Show and loved it. Loved when Charles built that house and seen other houses that were lovelier, but hey, when it's only one man building it, I'd say that it was awesome. I noticed though when the video was touring the main part of the house, through the one window, there was a white picket fencing. Sorry, but I've never seen any fences around their house in the series though and there was no trees directly in front of that window either. Across from their 'road' there was a huge field and to the right of that house, through that same window, was their barn. There was also an outhouse in front of that barn ... up the hill, facing the house and later a guest house was added. Oh, how we used to have great TV shows. Love love love your channel and how you show us so much of what we took for granted back then. Thank you.

The area where Carrie's bed always seemed a mystery to me. I never knew if it was a separate room or part of Ma and Pa"s room. I found it puzzling that Pa never added on to the Little House except for the kitchen. Even with the kitchen add -on he started it and then hired a man to finish it. Charles was a good carpenter. He worked at the sawmill and had easy access to lumber. They complained about being in cramped quarters especially when they adopted the children. I guess that would have hurt the image of it being a "little" house. I read where Michael Landon wanted things to be "clean" because it was through the eyes of the young Laura. Their clothes were always bright, clean, and neat and the house was bright and spotless.

The freestanding fireplace seems modern to me. And the windows in the house seem generous. I don’t know much about pioneer houses but it still feels authentic.
Interesting about having a clean, simple house and Laura’s perceptions.
Set design must be interesting. It’s historical yet getting a certain idea across. Cheers thanks much
