I was ten when this song came out. The singer songwriter phenomenon came after the tumult of the 60s and many of those teens from the sixties where turning 30 and turning into adults. with all those problems. What a time it was to grow up hearing this music.
I know the lead acoustic guitar part well, played this one since it debuted. But oh gosh, little attention gets paid to the gorgeous arrangement and other instrument parts. Even the bass guitar was superb, subtle and skillful. Of course, the lyrics were pure narrative poetry. Another Bravo for Angela, very nice reaction. 😇☺️🌹
Jim's wife opened a tavern down by the water front in San Diego Calif. and had many of his instruments on display. He is the lead guitarist in this song.

It was a hit in early 1973. and of course it way before cell phones, we used phone booths to call from somewhere other than your homes, cost a dime, excpet long distance was more change for so much time..I;ve been singing this song for almost 52 years with the guitar. in WWIi my dad got home, wounded, with a purple heart award, in 1946..found out his girl, who ha dbeen wriiting to him as if... was married to someone else. Yes, what a bitch. He found my mom 2 years later and that's why I am able to comment here! So thanks you lousy woman, for making sure I was born 😂 that's perfect revenge for many soldiers who came home from war.

I remember when it was announced that Jim Croce died in a plane crash. We loved his music and still do. He was a very gifted songwriter and performer. He had a very close loving relationship with his wife. They had a baby boy and Jim was touring so much and he just wanted to be with his family.

Jim was a semi-professional musician who was struggling in his career when he and his wife discovered they were expecting. He proceeded to sit down at their kitchen table and write nearly every hit he recorded over the next 2 weeks. Sadly, he never got to see his success due to his untimely death on tour in a plane crash. The record company took advantage of this situation and nearly left his wife Ingrid and son Ben penniless.
Well that really SUCKS!?! And I never even knew that until now.... but maybe there is some truth to that saying that "nice guys finish last"?? But then again there is that Bible verse about the LAST being first...I really just hope he's in much better place now because there still are conditions for making it there, as unpopular as that viewpoint is, I know....
