    This particular plane came from my Grandpa, who passed away in 2017. I learned to fly with this plane, and have a strong affinity for it. If you want to learn to fly, get one of these, and DO IT!!! We shared lots of good times with these planes; building kits together, ordering and installing electronics, and ultimately flying together once they were built. He is missed.

    Thanks for sharing Brian. This little plane will always have a spot in my heart. I learned so much from mine. Then I took the electronics from a crashed umx yak and put it in there with the 2's brushless motor and it flew beautifully and I actually still fly it from time to time

      I did the same thing from my Habu UMX...since I was handicapped by SAFE at the time, and the V2 Habu 180 UMX had SAFE. I flew the crappers out of my Sport Cub S UMX for a LONG time, then I eventually bought a Carbon Cub SS UMX, and realize - NO SAFE!!!!! But it had Flaps...and the rest is history :)

    Thank you sir. This is my first viewing of any video you offer. You make the most sense out of anybody on UA-cam about this particular plane . I just picked one up a couple days ago. Thank you for your video which has helped me immensely. Like I said, you make it very understandable. Fly on my brother

    Thanks for this! You helped to convince me to get the Sport Cub S+ RTF as a first plane. In the span of one month, I've already managed to tree it (retrieved with a pole, miraculously undamaged), submerge the nose in a puddle on landing (wouldn't turn on until I dried the electronics with a hair dryer), and send it beyond range (it started a descent pattern... into a tall redwood; I ran toward it and managed to get control back just in time!). It's also quite "fun" to fly (backwards) in 10mph+ winds. After a few hours of flight time, I've started to practice simple patterns in expert mode. Sometimes I get impatient and want to fly beyond my ability, so I climb high and start doing loops or rolls, with my finger over the "panic" button. I ordered 4 extra 150mah 1s batteries and can fly about 30 minutes each time I go out.

    Hi, I flew mine outside for the first time today. Ground handling isn't very easy, but doable with low RPM spurts. Flying it turns left very predictable, but right turns are about half/three quarters as good. I stayed at less than full throttle most of the time to save on battery time, but also I was flying in a parking lot that is maybe 20m wide by 80m long and fenced. I think the airplane might be more fun as I fly it more. I don't have a camera person to take videos.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому

      This plane needs some room. If it's windy, at all, the experience, ESPECIALLY GROUND HANDLING, will be greatly diminished.
      Keep your eye out for a video coming very soon :) :) ;)

    Nice, and I couldn't agree more. I love cubs, so I was naturally drawn towards this one. Picked one up, and she can take a beating too. Great when you want to just float around and good to start learning basic acrobatics as well. Sometimes gives you too much confidence, as I learned when I got an Aero Commander. :D My cub drifted off on the first flight, and I had to use my mavic pro to do some recon to track her down to someone's backyard. Makes a great first story, but I thought that was my first and last RC flight. Fortunately not

    Hi Brian and your lovely film crew, dig all your videos :), just picked up my Sport Cub -S last week to get back in the game after 25 years, went to the park this morning and second flight out the elevator servo bound up or quit, the plane nosed over and became a lawn dart. Amazon is sending a replacement, should be here tomorrow "Whee..." BTW while I was at the park this white "T" shaped thing embedded in the tree branches at the far end of the field kept catching my eye, so I went to investigate it was a plane. I climbed on some pretty sketchy branches to retrieve it and it was a new (maybe 1 or 2 flights) Mini Apprentice S. I thought good find !!! But my conscience was bugging me so I made a few "FOUND R/C Airplane" signs and posted them at the park. I hope I get to return it to it owner soon so he/she can enjoy flying again.

Just hope it goes better than your cub experience. ;p jk my friend... Hope your day is a great one !!! Ps. What's your thoughts on putting floats on the Aero Commander?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  5 років тому

      It would be okay, but you'll have to hog out a pretty good amount of foam to accept the float frame...but also, why not just belly land her? She'll pretty much land stock, with the wheels removed. It's a lot of fun actually, but might get the tips of the props into the water if you're not spot on with your aileron controls.
      Go for it, it'll be fun!

    Way cool umx plane. Me and wife picked the umx timber and its a great plane also after watching your videos on it. Tough little plane. Now I have to have one of those to lol I thought you was gonna get Mrs. Megan to fly dont think I have had the privilege to watch her fly. It's ok I want fly on camera. I'm still somewhat novice but haven't had a total loss crash YET I'm sure it's coming. I still fly high wing planes just moved to a low wing sr22 then maybe I'll attempt flight with a twin edf. Which is still being built. It's a turbo jet (dynam)but all electronics changed edfs are fms,11blade , beetles esc s and of course lemon rx and emax servos haven't changed gear yet or done lighting but I'm watching and learning. Thanks for your time and knowledge. I do find all your tips and modifications help me. Thanks

      If you have the Timber UMX, DON'T GET THIS ONE!!! You will be very disappointed...unless you're flying it inside a gym, or Church, or something like that. This is a GREAT plane, please don't misunderstand, but the BNF Timber UMX makes it a LOT more expensive for those who don't have any other spektrum transmitter yet...thus the recommendation of this as a BNF. It is a very good trainer, but it's very weak, with only a brushed motor, and 1S 150mAh lipo...thus, can't handle wind of more than 3-5 mph...and even then, it's a handful.
      I'm glad you keep coming back!
      P.S. We might have some big news coming, so keep an eye out. Should find out by next Saturday :) - Our little secret - LOL

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому

      That's a real issue! You need to practice in very calm to NO wind, and when and if it gets too high, just turn off SAFE and point it DOWN (Something you normally don't want to do....) and when you get back closer to the ground, you can turn SAFE back on, OR pull the trigger for "panic" mode if you're using the "batman" controller (the one that comes in the RTF option)

    I know I ask a lot of questions and I’m probably becoming a pain in the neck, but I was thinking about getting the umx timber as a first plane and use a DSX8e transmitter. My reasoning is even though I am going to be using limited channels (4-6 at most) I would hate to have to purchase another transmitter once my flying progresses and would like to play around with more channels. What are your thoughts on getting the umx timber, which by the way, I can watch you fly that thing all day long, with the DSX8e transmitter?

      You don't ask too many for me! I like questions, and you're one of the reasons this channel has been a success! I want to help, so ask away!!! You are NOT becoming a pain in the neck (...if you're really curious, just look over some of my conversations - LOL - I have about 1 out of 1,000 subscribers who are "pains in the neck", and they don't make up part of my audience anymore - jokes on THEM!)
      DX8e (I think you mean)...
      You will use all but ONE channel :)
      I completely, and totally agree with your rationale, as I've recommended this a FEW times this week. If you KNOW you're going to stick with it, spend the extra cash and get a DX8...WAY easier to setup...but the DX8e is quite a bit cheaper, which I realize is a REAL factor for most of us (me included!!!).
      MY ONLY ISSUE...
      ...with getting the Timber UMX, is that between it and the Transmitter, and Batteries, and Charger...you're gonna be tied up for a pretty good bit of cash. Would you consider instead, this path?
      Sport Cub S UMX RTF - amzn.to/2CA3npq
      ...this is a WAY less capable plane, that's still VERY cool, and being a new pilot, you will still be overwhelmed with flying this little beauty (I guarantee it, if you're really a new pilot!)
      This will cut your spending down by about 4-5 times, but your flight performance will be about 20% of the timber...and you'll thank me when you are still fixing the Sport Cub S UMX about 1,000,000 times before you're really "comfortable"...
      You can get the Timber and get really discouraged, and quit...OR you may be a super fast learner, and with SAFE Select, you may be okay...but I want to give you REAL and good advice (like what your parents give you, that you want desperately to ignore - LOL! - only to find out how right they really were)

      amzn.to/2uqAoFS - TURBO Timber UMX (the new one, they just released)

      Both are EXCELLENT choices. You will LOVE them!

      Get out of SAFE mode, (& go to "experienced" mode") then you can go straight down. Just be ready to pull the trigger, or turn SAFE back on if you're not an experienced pilot.

    Hey Brian, I noticed on mine that when you have the switch on zero that the oh crap button does not work, but when I switch to intermediate the oh crap red button works. Is that the way it is supposed to be? Thanks.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  5 років тому

      The "oh crap" button does work all the time (regardless of Expert, Intermediate, Beginner mode being active) but it's a lot less noticeable when you're already in full SAFE (beginner mode). There is a bit of a "lag" when you press the "oh crap" button, where the system keeps trying to level the plane more aggressively, which is how you can tell that the button is working.
      You'll also notice that YOUR control inputs are more muted, and the SAFE seems to take over even more

    Hi Brian. Have a old Glasair sportsman I picked up second hand but think a smaller plane would be better for a first flight. Can you recommend the best out of my short list please. Sport cub s - champ s+ - original yellow champ - or the UMX Timber? Great videos by the way. Shame your affiliate links are not uk versions also.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  5 років тому

      Sport Cub S UMX - Best choice, since you can get RTF, and actually have everything. A Champ would be okay as a first plane, but SAFE makes it so much less scary as you're learning. The Timber UMX will be an awesome plane when you feel totally good on the Sport Cub S UMX
      Hope you make the plunge! You won't regret it!!!

    Can you help please? I'm having trouble understanding some of the instructions. Basically, I need to manually adjust the trim. In the manual it says on page 13, that before adjusting the metal u bends on the servos, that you must press the trim buttons to return to centre, and 3 beeps will sound. But I'm getting confused because there's a long beep in the centre, when adjusting the trim, and not 3 beeps, as stated in the manual. The only time I get 3 beeps is when I reach the outer trim level, so are the servos in a central position when the three beeps sound? Or when the long beep sounds?

    • @user-ht5os4hy1b
      @user-ht5os4hy1b Рік тому

      Its ok no need to respond, found out the manual is wrong on page 13. When it comes to manual trimming. The central position of the servo is the long beep in the middle. Not 3 beeps as stated in the manual.

    So for anyone looking for tips with this plane : lower rudder tab tends to break off easily , use blenderm with foam tac to reinforce when broken. Motor mount is held in with silicone so will fixed after a few crashes. Buy spare gearboxes and use hotglue to secure. Put some slightly larger wheels on to fly off ash parks( use heatshrink on the landing gear to be able to use wheels with larger diameter hole). Try not to land in grass as the elevator side tabs will break off and cause instability. Final tip -Buy one it was my 'gateway' into rc and now ive lost count of how many planes + fpv racing 'drones' (Quads) I own. Also dont buy horizon motors get some micro motor warehouse ' insane 19000kv' 8520 motors with 9t gear fitted swap over connector much better. Sorry just thought of another which is the most important , swap the planes battery connector to a jst ph 2.0 connnector (stock is jst ph 1.25 which is designed to fail after 30 odd cycles) tiny whoops also used the 1.25 plug then went to 2.0 which lasts longer and gives more power. The best 1s ph 2.0 connector batteries are gnb 250 mah available on amazon prime. I hope this helps somene , sorry for babbling on.

      Excellent little plane , ive owned 2 (3 if spare parts were included) Got me hooked instantly , she can be flown with larger 500-750 mah nanotechs aswell btw. They fit better if you widen the battery slot, pretty sure i was getting just over 10 minutes with no noticeable performance loss she still flies inverted etc, though i would recommend the better motors first but the extra weight really does help. Wondering if you will be getting the 'new' parkzone trojan with safe etc ? Thanks

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  6 років тому +1

      I was using 300mAh 1S nanotechs before I switched my first to a brushless configuration, but not sure what "new" trojan with SAFE, you're reffering too. I have the ~ $270 1.2m T-28B Trojan with only AS3X, but the smaller (1.1m), simpler (no retracts, no flaps) T-28 does have SAFE...but it's been out for quite a while.
      I LOVE my T-28. It's one of my favorites, and my list of comparisons is growing fast ;)
      Have you ever checked out my playlists? I've got all the playlists organized to showcase each plane, with all the progress if I make mods, for example, so that my audience (and me) have a lot easier time finding what they're looking for. Brian Phillips the plane im referring to is PKZ8250 its listed under their new releases ? I had been looking at the one you have but read that it lacks power and really should run on 4s where as the parkzone runs fine on 3s also the front retract gets a bad reputation apparently. I had watched your video on tips for the at-6 and was wondering how you had been getting on with that one aswell ? , i managed to get my at-6 for free as horizon uk had wrongly listed them for £0 bnf on release so i took the chance and it arrived lol a few members of my 'fpv group' also managed to get them lol

    Hi Brian
    Great vids , I'm thinking of buying one of these , is there any chance you can show how to trim because you say in the vid it's best to trim out of safe mode but for a 1st time flyer that would be a bit dodgy ,
    Any tips would be greatful
    Also what buttons trims the plane ?
    Thanks for your help

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 роки тому

      Symo - This would be a great plane to start out with, and it's not super pricey...maybe check out our newer videos of this plane here - ua-cam.com/play/PLXTH0DstRDc5gY8qX_x8kAJq3glGMXjDy.html
      ...as for trimming, there's small buttons that sit below or next too each of the control sticks. When you're flying along with SAFE, the plane will keep from tipping over and will fly level when you let go of the sticks...the problem with trying to trim the plane in SAFE, is that you won't know what direction the plane is trying to tip ;) When you're ready to trim the plane out, just go "a few mistakes high", and be ready to pull the RED TRIGGER when and if you need to recover. When you have the plane at a good height, a few mistakes high, set the throttle to about 50% or so, then switch out of SAFE to expert and LET GO OF THE STICKS and watch what happens...
      Does the plane...
      ...dive? What would you do to fix this? Pull back on the elevator (Right Stick)....so now you need to press the bottom trim button a few times and watch if the plane "pulls out of the dive". Of course, you need to correct the plane with the sticks if it gets to diving too far. When you feel like you can let go of the sticks and the plane keeps flying without diving down, you're good.
      ...climb? do the same as above, only trim with the TOP button on the RIGHT stick until it flies without climbing.
      ...roll left? same as above, only press the RIGHT button on the RIGHT stick until it flies without rolling left.
      ...roll right? same as above, only press the LEFT button on the RIGHT stick until it flies without rolling right.
      ...turn left (YAW left)? same as above, only press the RIGHT button on the LEFT stick until it flies without yawing left.
      ...turn right (YAW right)? same as above, only press the LEFT button on the LEFT stick until it flies without yawing right.
      Sometimes in stead of a two trim button configuration, controllers have rocker switches, which do the same thing.
      Flying is not easy, but it's SOOOO much easier now with SAFE (Auto-Leveling) and AS3X (Stabilization) than it ever was before.
      Good luck, we'll be here to help you along!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  6 років тому

      I don't know if you can drive a couple 9 gram servos off this little pcb, but I know you won't be able to use the built in brushed motor esc on this brick.
      If I recall, you might have a spare channel on the "Xport" which could be used to control a Brushless Motor via and external ESC, but you have to be careful...this PCB is rated for 1S, and you'll need 2S or 3S minimum for your ESC.
      My advice, don't plan on using THIS brick for your ARF, but it's a good swap out for another UMX plane, if you crash. I put one of these bricks in my F4U-4 Corsair UMX, so now I have SAFE on it :)

    I received one for birthday-xmass. At first, the rudder didn't work and safe was messed up. I didnt fly it at all.
    Took it back to hobby store. The rudder started to work. But safe was still messed up- had to be in nose high, large bank for control surfaces to be flush with the wing. They tried another controller- safe started to work right. When worker tried to fly it, safe mode started to act up again - needed an akward attitude for control surfaces to be flush with wings. I thing the unit is defective. I am waiting for replacement. This is my first airplane so i am afraid of damaging it. Can u land in tall grass without damaging it (throttle cut and it tip over)?

      First, try to place it down level with all three landing gear on the ground or a flat table. Does it work after about 10 seconds?
      If NOT, you might have a linear servo issue. Is it JUST the Rudder, or other surfaces too? If COULD be the transmitter stick...I've seen this too...especially with the cheap RTF transmitters (They call them the Batman Controlled)

      Pretty much, you just put it in the air. The lipo is so small, it's kinda a joke to play with CG. I agree it's a factor on most planes, but on the UMX'es there's hardly any difference in lipo position, so limited impact on a very forgiving plane....IE just fly it ;)

    I have 2 of these and I have a hard time getting them to roll. I wonder if it’s just part of the design. I don’t have the RTF. I have BNF to my DX6. Rates are set to 100%

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  6 років тому

      Two things...
      1) Are you 100% sure you're NOT in SAFE?2) If you are 100% sure you have SAFE turned off, then you can try to incorporate both FULL rudder and FULL Ailerons, and keep in the power.
      You will be able to do a roll. If this doesn't suit your fancy, move your control rods to the inside most setting on BOTH ailerons, and you'll gain quite a bit of roll authority.

    • @jeremyhayes1242
      @jeremyhayes1242 6 років тому +1

      Brian Phillips yeah. It’s not in safe. It will do loops very easily. It will roll but it’s very slow to roll. I already moved the servo rods to the holes closest to the wings for the ailerons. I think it’s just underpowered to roll easily.

      There IS An extra port (AKA called an "Xport", ironically enough) It has one or two extra pins on the plug, but you can plug in a linear micro servo, OR you can use a small connector to pull voltage for an LED kit, which is what I did.
      Just keep in mind, the little dinky servos run on lower voltage than a standard Rx, so your resistor values will be lower. Keep in mind, your lipo is only 4.2 VDC at full charge, so you're not gonna be into the 5-5.5VDC range that you'd have on a "full sized" receiver.

      If you've NEVER flown, this is a GREAT choice for a total armature... Many of the other choices I'd recommend are fairly pricey as a "first plane", since you'd have to get a transmitter and battery and chargers...you know what I mean???
      If the Apprentice S 1.5m (they also make a mini...but I'd get the 1.5m...1.5meter, and make sure it's RTF, not BNF - bind and fly...meaning you gotta have a transmitter FIRST )

    Hey Brian do you think the carbon cub s+ is a good first plane? The thing is I started flying with EDF jets the F-22 was my first plane ever crashed it once due to wind and not good at flying. After that had no problems glued it back together and haven’t crashed since but for some reason I thought I could fly prop planes and really can’t like the F-22 but was just wondering if that’s a good plane.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому

      For the record this is a Sport Cub S UMX, not a Carbon Cub S+, if you weren't already aware. As for the Carbon Cub S+, it's gotta be one of the most over complicated planes I've ever had the chance to fly. YES, it is a good flying plane, but I'll let you in on a tip, bring a clean pair of drawers for the first time you hit the "geo-fence"...the plane will pretty much take over, for no apparent reason, and you'll be FREAKING OUT!!!! Other than that, and the generally HUGE pain in the rear end it is to even get in in the air....it does fly wonderfully! It's NOT a good first plane, in my opinion, for the aforementioned reasons, however, if you can tolerate these issues, and know your way around the modern RC systems, then you'll be fine.
      P.S. What a beauty, that Carbon Cub S+ really is!!!

      I've been flying for about 3 years. Funny you say you're still challenged by 3 channel planes...I hated and still kinda hate flying 3 channel planes. @@BrianPhillipsRC ok thanks :)... There's a way to know if the battery is low during the flight?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  5 років тому +1

      Well, there is a Low Voltage Warning. The motor pulses, at which point you will have a very limited time to land your plane, or you can usually get off the throttle, and glide to where you think you want to end up, then simply use the throttle for managing your rate of decent close to touchdown. It's not as hard as this answer makes it sound, but the lipos will "recover" a little if you had been hard on the throttle, then you let off...the voltage will come back up somewhat. At first signs of LVW I land, but it's better on your lipos if you can set a timer for maybe a minute or 30 second from the LVW. When and if you have a fluke where you blow through the pack quicker, the LVW will help save the lipos....BUT if you do it all the time you'll ruin your lipos pretty quick.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  6 років тому +1

      This plane only has a brushed motor, and it would catch fire with 2S...
      As for flapperons, I think you can, but you lose the AS3X and/or SAFE for that aileron. I HAVE done this with my F4U-4 Corsair UMX, which now has a SAFE/AS3X brick from my original Sport Cub S UMX.
      I know this comment could cause concerns for my well being (LOL), but this plane may actually not do so well with flaps. This one flies so close to stall speed that introducing a flap WOULD slow it down, and it would still be cool, but I think the added weight would cause a detrimental impact on overall performance.
      Maybe I'll do a video to show how once COULD do it if they wanted to do it ?????

      BUT really, I did add flapperons to my F4U-4 Corsair, using the same electronics, so I could add it here too...but I'm not a huge fan of outboard flapperons, as I find them to make the plane fly "wonky"...while FULL length flaps work pretty good - I guess this plane has almost full length ailerons.....HUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, you've got me thinking - Darn you!!!

      For sure! This plane will need pretty calm conditions, but it's such a slow flier than you can easily fly it in a gym or a large out-building. It's a great learning plane, but if you want something that will handle the wind a bit better, check out the Timber UMX - an EXCELLENT plane, but far more advanced...and still has SAFE Select, if you want to use it. Only BIG issue is that you need a proper transmitter to use that plane, rather than a "Batman" transmitter, which means it's quite a bit more expensive ;(

And/Or to have your personal (recommended) Top 5 of each section (e.g. which is most recommended for beginners, which one for Aerobatics training, which is the most scale plane, etc (for me, the No1 for best looking is the PT-17 :-) with 1.1m from Dynam) )

      With the "WAY Better", you'll be in it for more cash, but you're going to have a higher probability of success, which means you may WASTE less cash overall. When you're new, you want the BEST, which sounds kinda weird, but it's TOTALLY 100% right on - let me know in a year, if I was right ;) I only know from personal experience, and hundreds, if not thousands, of people's feedback. The "Cheap" options, are FUN and really cool too, but you'll LEARN to fly better with the "Loads Better" options.

      I have SAFE on my Spitfire 1.2m, Esteban's P-47D 1.2m has SAFE, and the new P-51D will have SAFE too.
      It would be maybe a bit challenging being it's a tail dragger, and high P-factor to deal with, but you can get the full size Timber 1.5m and be flying from almost anywhere!!! The options are so wide and awesome!

      It's for beginners, but I still love to fly it, especially if it's calm out, and indoors too.

      Yeah indoor,s would be a Good Wind Shield for it...

      Brian Phillips so that means, thankfully for us viewers, we will always have her expert cinematography. She needs to know she hardly ever misses a shot! I'm sure you've watched others who aim but fall far from their goals of sharing videos documenting their spectacular flights - they're in abundance. I enjoy your channel very much. I feel like I'm actually just hanging out with a fellow rc enthusiast when watching your posts. Keeep'em coming! Thanks for the great content

    Are you doing this for beginners???? You're loosing them

    Too fragile of a plane with safe even.
    I've had three now. Not buying another.

      Why are you buying new ones? If you're breaking them, this is a great opportunity to learn to fix them. Mine was one big chunk of CA and kicker by the time I retired it.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC lol! I did fix them.
      Two ended up flying away and never were found.
      One I still have and will attempt repairs.
      But I'll not buy another.
      I'm moving on to bigger , better things.
      The one I still have, I will keep for a long time weather it flies or not.
      I learned to fly without safe on with it.
      And learned inverted flight with it.
      It needs a few small repairs and possibly a new motor, but I'm trying to save up for an fms Olympus.

      This is for beginners. If you know how to fly a drone, you can probably fly this plane okay...
