    We organize information without even thinking about it. It's not just the act of storing files into different folders, writing down a to-do list or setting up a planner. The way you create an hierarchy of thoughts, prioritize actions, create little rituals around your daily routine are all symptoms of an organized mind.
    This is the main concept behind a book called "**Organized Mind" by Daniel Levitin**, who has a PhD in Psychology and who is specialized in behavioral neuroscience. The book is divided into 9 main chapters. The organizational system mentioned by the author has crucial building blocks that allow you to filter through what's non essential and organize the data that you access everyday.
    One of those building blocks is *[categorizing].* Categorizing is a form of cognitive economy. You treat things as being of a kind so you don't have to waste time on details that are irrelevant to your goals. The good news is that we all have an intuitive sense of what constitutes a category and how well something fits into that category. That category is than formed based on [**gross or fine appearance].** Gross appearance is recognizing that a bunch of documents are receipts. Fine appearance separates your receipts from relating to personal purchases, to business, to utilities. Some of these categories can be harder or easier to separate, but the goal here is to recognize the main features of the data you're treating, and then be able to tell whether you need to go in deeper and start sorting those main features through other criteria.
    The curious thing is that people who are on top of their game are used to this without thinking about it. This is the so called *active sorting* - the way you separate things you need to deal with with things you don',t without giving it much thought. Active sorting can be translated into a system that a lot of you are familiar with - the Eisenhower matrix. It's the organizational system that breaks down tasks into urgent and important; important but not urgent, urgent and non-important and non-urgent and non-important. Some people can do this breakdown instantly when they come across the relevant data; other people have to use another building block to do this exercise → a brain extender.
    A [**brain extender]** is a calendar, a smartphone, a time management app, a notebook. These are systems of attention and memory that are external to your brain but are built to be accessed by the brain at all times. As such, the information you type or write down in these brain extenders needs to have the same language as your internal organization and categorization system. This is why you hear a lot of the times that when you're planning, you should use simple language. This is because your thoughts are usually not very complex and the way your brain processes information and organizes it doesn't use fancy words or formulas.
    Then you have the famous brain dump, the thing you do when you have to *clear your mind**. It rids your brain of any clutter that's in your head and gives you the space to focus on what you want to focus on. That is why that when you make a huge list of all the tiny things you have to do, you tend to feel more relaxed than stressed. When there's something important on your mind that is not using a brain extender, you're afraid you'll forget it, so you brain rehearses it and tosses it around in circles in the so called **[rehearsal loop].*
    Some items in your brain dump may be things that you believe you are able to do at the same time, like working on a project while you're hearing a podcast, or trying to read your textbook while TV is playing in the background. But, as you've probably heard before, multitasking has metabolic costs - it takes a lot of energy to shift your attention from task to task. **"People who organize their time in a way that allows them to focus are not only going to get more done, but they'll be less tired and less neurochemically depleted after doing it**." Also, multitasking disrupts your problem solving capabilities as well as creative thinking.
    And if the task at hand requires a **[multipart sequence]**, the need to avoid multitasking is even greater. These sequences require a proper temporal order, something we can easily transport to a workflow in business or a project for college. So if you have a long term project or task that needs to be accomplished, it's not enough to write down that you need to complete it; you have instead to break it down into parts and import it into a more complex organization system.

    As someone with ADHD I created one list on my smartphone notes with headers:
    - Do now (in red)
    - Plan (orange)
    - Not important/urgent (yellow)
    - Buy
    - Ideas
    - Quotes (motivational)
    Brain dumping is like closing down many browser tabs. It reduces mental load and helps with focusing on important tasks.

    I have ADD and I was terrible with organization but the entire summer I spent it on organizing my room and buying storage containers which has saved my life a ton. It's become an obsession with being organized if I'm not organized and I don't know where anything is I will literally have a panic attack. Losing things a lot is a main part of adhd it sucks. I recommend starting small and buying some bins, and containers from amazon! The main thing I struggle with is being organized for school! Hopefully that'll change.

      Idk for sure about college BUT when I was in high school I combined all classes in ONE big binder with dividers and ONE singular folder for homework assignments. Right side folder was unfinished and left was finished hw. If it all was complete id combine and keep the weight on the right side. The binder tended to have notes and handouts ect. If it got overloaded id file and take out old non applicable at the moment notes and put them aside in another binder/folder at home. Extremely useful and helpful

      Mike! Current ADHDer here. I use to drive myself and my mom crazy (still do sometimes) because of how disorganized I was. In order to compasate, I began using systems. Little by little, I began to realize that I was becoming more organized and wasn’t losing/misplacing my belongings as much, wasn’t forgetting that I had meetings or WORK, and other important events/tasks. Start small and be patient with yourself. Be specific: What areas of your life need tidying up? Break that down even further until you get as specific as you can. Ex; my room is a mess and I can never find the clothes I’m looking for. Therefore, I would focus on going through my clothes (not all once or you’ll become overwhelmed-guaranteed), then select what to keep, donate, etc.
      There’s a lot of useful information outthere, but the important thing is that you start... you’ll find that completing smaller tasks will motivate you to tackle more challenging areas. I know can do it!

    "Lifehack" and productivity product recommendation: Read physical books and write in physical journals with pen and paper every day. Just these two alone will fully engage your focus and increase organization, concentration, and focus. Don't think that because these two "art forms" are dying off that they're not better. Trust me. These two increase your level of engagement and motor skills. Nothing beats the timelessness and razor-sharp focus that these two provide.

    • @victoriamiao
      @victoriamiao 4 роки тому +9

      I’m not a 100% sure about this but for me I used to think that too, because I’d gotten used to listening to music while I work. But the more you train yourself to work without music the more productive you get. You just need to get over the initial bump because the discomfort of not having music makes you think about that and not your work. At least that’s what I think, I’m not sure

    • @nmoomoo
      @nmoomoo 4 роки тому +6

      Victoria Miao I don't really see why I have to though. I think people in the studyblr community kind of force their audience their into thinking they have to do things in a certain way to be successful students and what not but like if you do things differently and it works for then you stick to that.

      I think it's about where you put that active focus/attention, it might be hard to divide it so it's recommended not to.
      Personally, I can't listen to podcasts or anything that I'd have to pay attention to understand whilst doing a creative task, so I usually choose instrumental music. However I definitely know people who can do it, it's a matter of personal preference I guess and habit

    Why do you talk so quickly and not emphatically?!
    You have so much important value to convey. But because you are flying through your talk it makes trying to follow you very hard work where words are missed for example you said catrising which was also written, thankfully. The word is CA-TEG-GOR-IZING not catrising, you can't slur words or they will be missed - perhaps you are reading your script in which case that is the reason. Why go fast?! The adverts are taking up a lot of space too,bright in the middle of your lecture - many people will just log off at that point. It's a shame, your stuff is really cool and important and well researched. Fluency does not mean fast, it means understood clarity and cadence rythum. That's is why often, people can finish your sentences 9r understand you because of cadence - lacking cadence means they have to listen to every word to make sense, but then if you slur or drop a word you lose the listener.
    Your objective must not to read this to us if must be to make us understand. It's not a race!!
