I think the V2 is an upgrade over the V1 in most areas. I do wish that they kept the little pocket in the backstraps, and that they made the top flap a little as neat as the V1's. The shoe compartment is brilliant though. I don't combine my gym stuff with my everyday stuff. I just carry a separate bag. My clothes need a separate place as well because they get sweaty too. Where the shoe compartment works well for, is a light raincoat and compact foldable umbrella. When you're back inside after a shower, you can pack it up in the compartment, the moisture stays out of the rest of the bag, but evaporates through the holes. Things I want to see in the V3: Standing upright - Despite they've improved it as you can see in the vid, in the V3 I want the Dayfarer to be as sturdy standing up as the Nomatic Backpack and Peak Design Everyday Backpack. Pockets - Extra pockets like a dedicated one for a TKL keyboard, another for a mouse, and another for a tablet. Straps - Optional sternum and waist straps. When you pack heavy, they're great. Securing the top sides - Buckle buttons for the top side. If you're not careful, the sides are not stowed underneath the top flap, and water can get in. Passthrough holes - One that sits between the middle of the pack and the laptop compartment (to pass through charger cable for the laptop). And another waterproof passthrough on the side to be able to charge your phone while on on the go. TSA locks - A TSA version or mod of the Fidlock lock. And loops next to zippers, so that we can lock them with TSA locks. Cleaning up the top flag - Make it as straight as the V1's. If they can keep everything else on the V2 as it is now (same materials, same weight, shoe compartment, toploader-clamshell hybrid design etc etc), then I don't even mind if they'd raise the price by 50€. It be my endgame bag.
Not gonna lie, this looks pretty great. I like the less bulky shape than the v1. Love the shoe compartment for my climbing shoes and chalk bag. I just wish wish wish it had some sort of tablet sleeve that I could access quickly, since I'm usually walking around with a 15inch laptop and a remarkable tablet for note taking and reading.
there is a back compartment in the main compartment that I think is perfect for a tablet... although it's probably best to make sure your tablet would be covered/protected cuz there isn't much padding there
Just pre-ordered this one using your link. From what I can tell this seems like the perfect every day carry for business and gym. Lots of cool features too. Can't wait to receive the V2!
Awesome review as always! I really do dig the sleeker look and the more vertical back panels, but aside from those, I can't really justify upgrading. I did just order an Active Sling with your referral link though (hope it works for non-V2 purchases), because I've always wanted to try a sling pack.

Although i bought this bag a year ago before watching this review, i must say that this bag is the most used bag i have for on-the-go everyday everywhere travel. It's just so useful. I would also suggest getting their sling bag for everyday carry, just for the everyday essentials.
I have the v1 in XPac (which I got based on your review!) as my EDC. I adore it - best backpack I've ever owned. I added a magnetic latch for the key leash. The v2 looks sleek and I dig the new back panel, but I'm not sure it's worth the upgrade for me. I'm not sold on the 840D, and I prefer the side pocket to be as easy and accessible as possible (quick access ftw). Call me crazy, but I adjust the front strap often enough that I prefer not to have a dangle stopper there. Still love the overall design and functionality though. As always, great review!

Great videos, I just subscribed. Trying to understand if I need to go for the Nomatic Travel Pack, Modern Dayfarer v2 or the AER Duffel Pack 3. I guess I need to repeat all of your videos again haha, they definitely help.
Same here , I am struggling between these two backpack. Which one did you end up getting? For me v2 seems to have larger capacity, but it doesn’t come with a divided laptop compartment like are do. Aer has a better shape but seems like a smaller capacity.

The only downside for me is the fact that it does not stand up straight and will fall, so I need to put it against something. Its really versatile and fits my lifestyle. I can take it to sports, take it for a short two day trip, and daily office without having extra things inside works great too. On my way back from the office i sometimes stop at the supermarkt to do some groceries and this bag gives me plenty of space to do so. On full capacity (gym clothes, office stuff) it becomes a bit tight everything but I do not mind.

that's a really tough one. I'd pick based on the size you want more. The MD is smaller, the Aer is bigger. If that won't help you pick, flip a coin lol.

Hey Aaron. Appreciated how detailed this video is. I'm super interested in the Modern Dayfarer backpack but I'm a little torn between the two versions because it seems like V2 is slightly longer and wider in exchange for being flatter. I'm 5'2" which means 18" is about as long as a bag can be without feeling too long. Modern Dayfarer quotes V1 at 18" and V2 at 18.9". Did you notice those length and width differences/how is the fit different between v1 and v2?
Hey RB, thanks for the question. So I did not notice at all, in fact although it might technically be longer, because of it's compression and less boxiness, it feels smaller to me. I'm 5'8 so my experience is obviously different but hopefully it can give you some direction :)
the biggest thing i hate about this bag are 2 things 1) it doesnt stand at all... not even the slightest 2) when you lock the magnetic buckle of the main compartment and u sling ur back on ur back really hard with ur rightarm, the buckle flies OPEN!!! super annoying
Point #1 - can't really hold that against the bag, the large majority bags don't self-stand, and MD never advertised that it can. Point #2 - definitely a solid criticism.

If you watch around 1:44 into the video, the V1 is falling over as Aaron lets go of it, but the V2 seems to be standing up on its own. Also around 6:20, it seems to stand up on its own. Not sure if it's due to the contents so take that for what it's worth.
V2 def isn't a self-standing bag in the way that the Nomatic Backpack is, but if packed out the right way it can sortof manage to hold itself up. As for water bottle I'm not 100% sure cuz I don't have a Nalgene - maybe reach out to David at MD and check with him!

I've been constantly rewatching your videos for both this v2 and the Aer City Pack Pro and I can't make up my mind. I basically need space for a laptop, tower, change of clothes, boxing gloves, and I'd like to use the bag as my EDC as well. Which one would you think fits best?

I just bought this as it is exactly what I’m looking for in a work/gym carry. One question I have on this and other bags is, why does the laptop sleeve (perfectly position here) need to be padded on both sides? The back side I understand; but if you’re carrying items in the front of the bag, and even if you’re not, why do we need a second thick padding on the front of the sleeve, which after all is just the back wall of the main compartment, where presumably you have other stuff to act as padding? Seems like you could reduce weight and thickness by eliminating it. Thoughts?
Def could! But the weight/bulk isn't too much and it also helps give the bag some structure which makes it a more comfortable wear and gives it a smarter aesthetic
I feel like the laptop compartment feels a bit tight and can't fit any more than the laptop. Like a charger or powerbank. I'd prefer my tech stuff to be all in one component. There's also only one place to put things, so I might be wary of putting two devices together inside. Like an iPad or powerbank and a laptop. The two will hit each other while walking and cause dents etc. Quick access is super important to me to be able to access things on the go.. I'm also afraid with the dual zippers for the middle compartment, the backpack might just open and give way if I try to unzip it while standing causing contents to fall out. Happened to me once in the train for another bag. I do like the shoe compartment that can be converted though. Thanks for the review!
thanks dude! Tough call, both great bags. I'd keep it simple - if you need more space go with ACPP. If you want something smaller go with MDV2. But you cannot go wrong either way :)
I’ll be reviewing the Alpaka Pro for my first time in a few months. You def can’t go wrong with quality of either brand, so just decide based on which features are most important to you 💪🏾

I like the bag but I like having that separation from gym to work in design like aer fit pack 3. We didn't see it kitted out with the shoes but I reckon shoes take a lot of space

@@Nomads.Nation I’ve got a struggle between this and the able carry daily plus in fact. I prefer the organization on this one, it’s just so so versatile for what you can put in, the able carry plus is 20L about and got this internal water bottle holder which I’m not sure how it will restrains it and it got the laptop inside the main compartment, except this two parts, I think it is the almost perfect bag as well. Which would you choose? Would there be a review about the able carry daily plus?
Do you have any issues with the fidlock? Feels like it is very sensitive to any movement and any unvoluntary sway will unclick the lock opening the main compartment. Annoyingly this happens even when having it directly on the back both straps over the shoulders.
Yes, I didn’t highlight this enough in the review and really only became aware of it as I wore the pack more. I would say tho in my experience the fidlock only comes undone when swinging the bag around and trying to grab something.
I carry a lot of books (10+kg), I’m just wondering if the fidlock will give way if I turn the back upside down? And also I do tend to be clumsy-i do drop my bag with my 16” laptop in it, do you think the false bottom on this should be sufficient ? I’m trying to decide between this and the aero citypack pro
It can unlock if you were to for some reason turn the bag upside down, yes. The laptop compartment is very secure 💪🏻 But given your clumsy lifestyle (I’m clumsy too lol) then ACPP might be a better option
Hey Aaron, can you test is a 17" laptop fits in this bag? My laptop is 395.7 x 260.8 30.05mm which is a bit thinner than regular 17" laptops so it's hard to confirm where it fits. Thank you in advance!

I feel like they did away with a second water bottle holder for the admin pocket on the side, and tbh I don't see that was necessary and frankly in the PNW is super disappointing. People here often use the second water bottle pocket for an umbrella, as you never really know when it will rain, and you don't want to put a wet umbrella in your bag. Also, what if you want to carry water and a coffee, or smoothie? It's supposed to be a gym bag isn't it?
@@Nomads.Nation Yes, that was a complaint for V1 also. You mentioned that you were interested in feedback for your bag's prototype. Things I liked about it were the organization and the shoulder strap pocket. Also essential I think should be chest strap and/or hip strap.

What do you think about the strap shape/geometry? The V1s felt like they were attached too close and angled too vertically for me. I'm not a huge dude but the straps would always force their way out unless I used the chest strap to cinch them together. The fabric on the backpads on my V1 also pilled up like crazy. Really nasty & cheap material. How does the new fabric feel from a longevity perspective?
@Aaron Radcliffe (Nomads Nation) The mesh covering the pads. It got ratty looking really quickly. To be clear: I like my V1 a lot, but the worst made part were the pads. The rest still looks fine.

Buyer beware. It took more than 60 days between when they charged my credit card and when the product arrived. (read the fine print on their website before you buy) The bag was not even in production when I purchased it. When I tried to return it because it's a shoddy product with slick marketing I was told that I'd have to ship it from USA to Germany, which woulg cost me another $100 in addition to the $300 that I already wasted. Customer service is non-existent at this company. I'm selling mine on eBay if anyone wants to buy this at a reduced rate. Don't believe the hype. This backpack doesn't even stand up straight when you place it one the ground. It falls over on it's side. The side pockets were too small to even hold my water bottle. It's tiny and uncomfortable to wear. Slick marketing, bad customer service, middling product design.

For what it's worth I will say that I respond to every comment on this channel, and this could be the first negative complaint I've heard about Modern Dayfarer's customer support. Hopefully your situation was an anomaly. Also, the bag isn't marketed as a self-standing bag, and not all side pockets can hold all water bottles, so I don't think these are valid criticisms. This is still one of my favorite bags ever, but also, to each their own

sideways luggage passthrough makes sense to me for easy access to the side pockets to quickly empty and reload pockets when going through TSA

if you want expansion then check out Nomatic Backpack, Knack Pack Expandable Small, or the Fyro T22 (which to be transparent is my backpack)

Boxing gloves can be bulky. ACPP might be better for that (but it’s a bigger bag, keep that in mind)

I just bought this as it is exactly what I’m looking for in a work/gym carry. One question I have on this and other bags is, why does the laptop sleeve (perfectly position here) need to be padded on both sides? The back side I understand; but if you’re carrying items in the front of the bag, and even if you’re not, why do we need a second thick padding on the front of the sleeve, which after all is just the back wall of the main compartment, where presumably you have other stuff to act as padding? Seems like you could reduce weight and thickness by eliminating it. Thoughts?
Def could! But the weight/bulk isn't too much and it also helps give the bag some structure which makes it a more comfortable wear and gives it a smarter aesthetic
Got the V1 for more than a year now, would still buy v1 over v2...
It’s not a hot take tbh, I think there are pros and cons to both models
I feel like the laptop compartment feels a bit tight and can't fit any more than the laptop. Like a charger or powerbank. I'd prefer my tech stuff to be all in one component. There's also only one place to put things, so I might be wary of putting two devices together inside. Like an iPad or powerbank and a laptop. The two will hit each other while walking and cause dents etc.
Quick access is super important to me to be able to access things on the go.. I'm also afraid with the dual zippers for the middle compartment, the backpack might just open and give way if I try to unzip it while standing causing contents to fall out. Happened to me once in the train for another bag.
I do like the shoe compartment that can be converted though.

I’ll be reviewing the Alpaka Pro for my first time in a few months. You def can’t go wrong with quality of either brand, so just decide based on which features are most important to you 💪🏾

@@mantap303 a bit, yes. I wish I would have highlighted this a bit more in the review, the fidlock can come undone, especially when swinging the bag over the grab something via the side access
I like the bag but I like having that separation from gym to work in design like aer fit pack 3. We didn't see it kitted out with the shoes but I reckon shoes take a lot of space

The biggest problem is this vs alpaka ELEMENTS BACKPACK PRO. So difficult to choose.

I’ve got a struggle between this and the able carry daily plus in fact. I prefer the organization on this one, it’s just so so versatile for what you can put in, the able carry plus is 20L about and got this internal water bottle holder which I’m not sure how it will restrains it and it got the laptop inside the main compartment, except this two parts, I think it is the almost perfect bag as well. Which would you choose? Would there be a review about the able carry daily plus?

Love my v1 and I'd only upgrade the bottle pocket.
V1 is still awesome, but yes I agree, the bottle pocket is an upgrade - more versatile

Do you have any issues with the fidlock? Feels like it is very sensitive to any movement and any unvoluntary sway will unclick the lock opening the main compartment. Annoyingly this happens even when having it directly on the back both straps over the shoulders.
Yes, I didn’t highlight this enough in the review and really only became aware of it as I wore the pack more. I would say tho in my experience the fidlock only comes undone when swinging the bag around and trying to grab something.
Do you prefer this over the Aer duffel pack 3 for gym/work
Only because of the quick access cuz it’s super important to me. If it was less important to me, then I’d go with the Aer Duffel 3

I carry a lot of books (10+kg), I’m just wondering if the fidlock will give way if I turn the back upside down? And also I do tend to be clumsy-i do drop my bag with my 16” laptop in it, do you think the false bottom on this should be sufficient ? I’m trying to decide between this and the aero citypack pro
It can unlock if you were to for some reason turn the bag upside down, yes. The laptop compartment is very secure 💪🏻
But given your clumsy lifestyle (I’m clumsy too lol) then ACPP might be a better option

Hey Aaron, can you test is a 17" laptop fits in this bag? My laptop is 395.7 x 260.8 30.05mm which is a bit thinner than regular 17" laptops so it's hard to confirm where it fits. Thank you in advance!

I feel like they did away with a second water bottle holder for the admin pocket on the side, and tbh I don't see that was necessary and frankly in the PNW is super disappointing. People here often use the second water bottle pocket for an umbrella, as you never really know when it will rain, and you don't want to put a wet umbrella in your bag. Also, what if you want to carry water and a coffee, or smoothie? It's supposed to be a gym bag isn't it?

@@Nomads.Nation Yes, that was a complaint for V1 also. You mentioned that you were interested in feedback for your bag's prototype. Things I liked about it were the organization and the shoulder strap pocket.
Also essential I think should be chest strap and/or hip strap.

What do you think about the strap shape/geometry? The V1s felt like they were attached too close and angled too vertically for me. I'm not a huge dude but the straps would always force their way out unless I used the chest strap to cinch them together.
The fabric on the backpads on my V1 also pilled up like crazy. Really nasty & cheap material. How does the new fabric feel from a longevity perspective?
Comfort seems good to me on both versions. Which materials did you think were cheap?
@Aaron Radcliffe (Nomads Nation) The mesh covering the pads. It got ratty looking really quickly. To be clear: I like my V1 a lot, but the worst made part were the pads. The rest still looks fine.

Buyer beware. It took more than 60 days between when they charged my credit card and when the product arrived. (read the fine print on their website before you buy) The bag was not even in production when I purchased it. When I tried to return it because it's a shoddy product with slick marketing I was told that I'd have to ship it from USA to Germany, which woulg cost me another $100 in addition to the $300 that I already wasted. Customer service is non-existent at this company. I'm selling mine on eBay if anyone wants to buy this at a reduced rate. Don't believe the hype. This backpack doesn't even stand up straight when you place it one the ground. It falls over on it's side. The side pockets were too small to even hold my water bottle. It's tiny and uncomfortable to wear. Slick marketing, bad customer service, middling product design.

For what it's worth I will say that I respond to every comment on this channel, and this could be the first negative complaint I've heard about Modern Dayfarer's customer support. Hopefully your situation was an anomaly. Also, the bag isn't marketed as a self-standing bag, and not all side pockets can hold all water bottles, so I don't think these are valid criticisms. This is still one of my favorite bags ever, but also, to each their own
Update from a more recent purchase… I purchased this in April and it came within 4 days.
