I have been going through the comments, a lot of you wonder why I did not know this song and actually knew the cover by Bad Wolfes well this song was released 1994 I was born 1996 so yeah that’s that . But what actually surprised me was the fact that people judged me by smiling at this , I do understand lyrics it’s not the first time I hear it, but it is the first time I experience Dolores and the Cranberries . Is it that bad that her beautiful voice makes me smile ? That I find beauty in her expressions, emotions and performance ? Judging a person’s ways of expressing is not right , making them feel bad or guilty just because they don’t feel the way you do is not to be done . I am very implicated in everything that’s regarding my channel from the recording to the replying and reading comments as well I am honest and admit if I recognize the lyrics or the song . Many people skip the intro and the outro and just watch the reaction. A lot of the questions and concerns they might have are usually answered at the beginning and end of the reaction. I'm guilty of that myself sometimes. I smile as well listening to this song. It's hauntingly beautiful. Seeing as how you had heard the song but not Dolores's version your smiling was inevitable and not out of place at all. You can't cry every time you listen to this song. When I hear the original, I get teary eyed. The song is about tragic circumstances and with Dolores no longer being with us, strikes home even more. RIP Dolores. ❤️🤘🎸🇦🇺
With Delores gone now, most of their songs make me sad because most of their songs, even the ones that aren't sad songs, have an undercurrent of sadness in her singing. Knowing now how tortured of a person she must have been, it's hard for me to listen to her sing. That said, if you haven't heard/watched their performance on NPR Music, Tiny Desk you really should. Delores is so sweet.

For a song with a connection to a specific situation and filled with such power and raw emotion, only those who have written it and lived through the reality can do it justice. Covers, however well intentioned and respectful can't even scratch the surface. RIP the one and only Dolores.

My sister was stationed in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. Hard time. Hope we never see it again. Brilliant song, especially relevant when you know know the background (but still awesome even if you don't).
Dolores' voice was pure magic. Wifey and I saw the play, and their show was 3 hours long!! They literally played their entire catalogue and her voice was just starting to go at the end. They worked their asses off for their fans, and I was actually shocked at how high that concert ranked in my (rather long) list of great concerts.

"We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension." She told Vox magazine in 1994 that the song was written in part as a mechanism to grapple with her identity as an Irish citizen that did not support the actions of the IRA. "The IRA are not me. When the Bad wolves did there version. it was supposed to a Collab. but when Delores Passed away shortly before they were going to record, it became more of a tribute to her instead, hence the symbolism of the golden makeup on the girl on the other side of the glass in the ne version
My family are from Northern Ireland and we moved away in 1996 after the troubles. It really was a horrible time. Remembering it is horrible but this song makes it ok. The Cranberries would want us to enjoy the music. Loved your reaction.
R.I.P. Dolores. Her music played a big part in me and my husband's life when we first got together at a young age. We now have four beautiful children and the kids blast this song now in the house. I'm sure our grandchildren one day will be doing the same thing. That was an awesome reaction to this great band and gorgeous singer.

Limerick man here. Breaks my heart everytime i hear 1916. I also was a teacher in a summer school in limerick with italian and spanish students learning english. Every week we picked a song to learn lyrics to and on fridays we would get all the classes together to sing it together in the hall. The first song was this. The kids loved it so much we just did a cranberries song every week. It was amazing to see 300 teens with english as a second language belt these songs out.

There’s obviously no way anyone could have covered this faithfully, but the fact that they did so is a tribute to the original. It’s a work of art, a song about tragedy sung by a person whose life was eventually tragic.
This song always hits hard for me. I have some partial Irish heritage. The subject is so grave but still must be addressed. I applaud The Cranberries for writing a heavy song that covers such an important topic. Rest In Peace to Dolores, unfortunately unable to overcome her demons in the end. Her addiction may have taken her but we have her voice forever.
the mid 90's were an amazing time for alternative rock (as we called it back then..).. Shifting from Grunge with Pearl Jam or Nirvana over to Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots to the likes of Radiohead, Cranberries, Skunk Anansie, Bush or the Offspring.. there are way too many amazing bands from that time to mention..
And I was blessed to have been able to hit every one of these shows in SLC, fort Collin’s 1995-1999 And sublime, warren G(amongst many other hip hop artists), RATM. Truly awesome time for music. Absolutely lucky for the memories

While it eludes to "the troubles" which was an ongoing conflict between Catholics and protestants in Ireland it also refers to a specific incident where two innocent children died in a random bombing.

In 2014, I visited Warrington where my sister lives. It was also there where the bombings that took the lives of two children in 1993. It was because this incident why this song was made.

Oh dear, I just read about what actually happened to Dolores - that is just so sad. I can relate to that, it is painfully close to home for me too. I can understand how now, with peace more or less stable in N. Ireland, that the song can be appreciated for its musical beauty as well as its profound message. However with what is happening in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the terrible cycle of violence against children, and civilians in general, continues.
I don't know if anyone has told you the story. The Bad Wolves version was originally supposed to be a colab with Delores. It was actually going to be a re-imagined version of the song. The day filming was to begin they found Delores drowned in her bathtub. What an unmitigated tragedy. I am tearing up just thinking about it. The Bad Wolves instead of just canceling the video altogether, decided to turn the song into a cover and Tribute to Delores. It's just awesome. This video is a masterpiece. The music is marvelous. It's mostly soft, silent and slowly but so powerful, emotional and expressive. No cover is comparable with such an original song. It's another dimension of music. Can't stop hearing it.

I saw her when i was 10 in small town midwest america right before they got big. To this day, one of my strongest, earliest memories. My first concert and she was part of the 2nd stage outside stage while inside stage was going. I'll never forget. Amazing. Died in car crash on way to help with the 'cover' BW's version ain't bad, but no one can replace her.

The spectre of this recent violence raised some fears during Brexit, but even then, they were downplayed and largely ignored. The Irish troubles should not be forgotten; they should be an enduring lesson on the toxicity of religious and cultural division with the violence and horror it brings to all involved.
What upsets me is how many Americans use this as an anthem for UP THE IRA AND KILL PEOPLE. It misses the point of the song of people being brainwashed by hatred. None of the sides want violence except the extremists on both sides :/ Also the Bass from this song is great fun to play. You can even do it acoustic on a uke if you down tune it :D

I watched a concert on T,V with the Cranberries. Instantly fell in love with Delores voice. Within a month I had 4 CDS the raw raspberry growl of her voice is very unique to her. I have heard noone who could match it. .
Delores "peculiar" vocal technique is called "Keening" or sean-no`s. It's a traditional Gaelic/Celtic form of singing almost wailing to morn death. Very fitting given what this song is about.

My husband who was literally born into a civil war, has tears on his face. This is so powerful and so BEAUTIFUL. It was also very much about Catholic versus Protestant values, a theme that has plagued British history since the 1530s. The line "It's the same old theme since 1916," is a reference to the Easter Uprising in Dublin in 1916, which was brutally repressed by the British. The Republic of Ireland came into being in 1922, first as a member of the British Commonwealth, but it later left the Commonwealth to make its own path. But the Republic never included the six counties around Belfast (which remain a part of the UK).

I was in college when this came out. It was a great year for music. But when this first played on MTV we were stunned, and knew we heard something important.

I am half Irish on my mother's side. The Irish have some of the saddest history ever, especially the Troubles in the 20th century. Well, she was supposed to do the Bad Wolves version with them but she literally died a day or two before they went into the studio for it. It would’ve been so amazing for her and bad wolves to have done that together. Something we all lost out on.
I saw a lot of concerts in the 1990's. Name a 90's band, I probably caught them. The Cranberries I saw 3 times. The first time was a random dreary Tuesday at a small venue. $3 at the door. The opening act was Counting Crows, who nobody had ever heard of, it was 3 months before their debut CD dropped. They blew the roof off the place. It was a half full venue, and they had the energy for a stadium. I got to talk with Adam Duritz for a few minutes after they played, while the roadies loaded them off, and The Cranberries on. He was just chilling side stage, and was the kindest soul. Then the Cranberries came on, and I was right up front. Delores was no more than 10' away for the entire show. I was instantly mesmerized by her. Easily one of my top 5 90's concert memories. I was crushed when she passed.

Still got the seven inch single from '94. That was the year they burst onto the scene in the UK with the single Linger although I think they gained a bit of traction in the US first. This song was clearly about the troubles in Northern Ireland though as I recall, I think it was specifically inspired by the Warrington bombings on the mainland the year before, a town just down the road from where I grew up. The troubles are still simmering away. We are lucky to live during a time where the majority from both sides of the argument want no more fighting but to try and continue to find a peaceful answer despite the best efforts of those that want a return to violence!

The first time I heard this announced on the radio I thought there is no way they could do this song justice. No one can... but... I didn't need to be generous with my words to say I didn't hate it.
@@SergioSBloch If you watch the video she was supposed to go into the studio to record her vocals on the very day she died. They then contacted Delores family and asked if they could still release the song. They then proceeded to give all the money they made off of their cover to Delores children.

Nothing wrong with smiling in a reaction to basically a perfect song. There is more to the song than war is bad lets be sad.

With Delores gone now, most of their songs make me sad because most of their songs, even the ones that aren't sad songs, have an undercurrent of sadness in her singing. Knowing now how tortured of a person she must have been, it's hard for me to listen to her sing. That said, if you haven't heard/watched their performance on NPR Music, Tiny Desk you really should. Delores is so sweet.

The song was written in 1994 hoping for peace in Northern Ireland. For a song with a connection to a specific situation and filled with such power and raw emotion, only those who have written it and lived through the reality can do it justice. Covers, however well intentioned and respectful can't even scratch the surface. RIP the one and only Dolores.
The Cranberries were trying to raise awareness about injustice, human suffering and unnecessary loss of lives. They also wrote a song about Bosnia and Herzegovina, calling for world powers to stop the mass murder.

Dolores' voice was pure magic. Wifey and I saw the play, and their show was 3 hours long!! They literally played their entire catalogue and her voice was just starting to go at the end. They worked their asses off for their fans, and I was actually shocked at how high that concert ranked in my (rather long) list of great concerts.
It’s a great song and It was written about an IRA bomb in Warrington,England that killed two schoolchildren….here’s what Delores said about why she wrote the song. “There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin -- that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken,'" O'Riordan told Songwriting Magazine. "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension."
She told Vox magazine in 1994 that the song was written in part as a mechanism to grapple with her identity as an Irish citizen that did not support the actions of the IRA.

When the Bad wolves did there version. it was supposed to a Collab. but when Delores Passed away shortly before they were going to record, it became more of a tribute to her instead, hence the symbolism of the golden makeup on the girl on the other side of the glass in the ne version

My family are from Northern Ireland and we moved away in 1996 after the troubles. It really was a horrible time. Remembering it is horrible but this song makes it ok. The Cranberries would want us to enjoy the music. Loved your reaction.

We now have four beautiful children and the kids blast this song now in the house.

Limerick man here. Breaks my heart everytime i hear 1916. I also was a teacher in a summer school in limerick with italian and spanish students learning english. Every week we picked a song to learn lyrics to and on fridays we would get all the classes together to sing it together in the hall. The first song was this. The kids loved it so much we just did a cranberries song every week. It was amazing to see 300 teens with english as a second language belt these songs out.

There’s obviously no way anyone could have covered this faithfully, but the fact that they did so is a tribute to the original. It’s a work of art, a song about tragedy sung by a person whose life was eventually tragic.
This song always hits hard for me. I have some partial Irish heritage. The subject is so grave but still must be addressed. I applaud The Cranberries for writing a heavy song that covers such an important topic. Rest In Peace to Dolores, unfortunately unable to overcome her demons in the end. Her addiction may have taken her but we have her voice forever.
the mid 90's were an amazing time for alternative rock (as we called it back then..).. Shifting from Grunge with Pearl Jam or Nirvana over to Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots to the likes of Radiohead, Cranberries, Skunk Anansie, Bush or the Offspring.. there are way too many amazing bands from that time to mention..
Here goes some more : NIN, Dinosaur Jr, Tool, Sonic Youth, Disturbed, etc etc. But yeah, you definitely get the point.

This is a very deep song. While it eludes to "the troubles" which was an ongoing conflict between Catholics and protestants in Ireland it also refers to a specific incident where two innocent children died in a random bombing.
The lyrics are so powerful. She was incredible. One of the best songs about war that I know.

Cover changed lyrics that didn't need changed. It was interesting though knowing Dolores was going to sing it but then passed away before she could. I believe they donated the proceeds of their cover to her children.
I don't think anyone else could sing this with the emotion that she did. And, of course, the entire inspiration of the song is heartbreaking.
In 2014, I visited Warrington where my sister lives. It was also there where the bombings that took the lives of two children in 1993. It was because this incident why this song was made.

Oh dear, I just read about what actually happened to Dolores - that is just so sad. I can relate to that, it is painfully close to home for me too.
I can understand how now, with peace more or less stable in N. Ireland, that the song can be appreciated for its musical beauty as well as its profound message.
However with what is happening in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the terrible cycle of violence against children, and civilians in general, continues.
I don't know if anyone has told you the story. The Bad Wolves version was originally supposed to be a colab with Delores. It was actually going to be a re-imagined version of the song. The day filming was to begin they found Delores drowned in her bathtub. What an unmitigated tragedy. I am tearing up just thinking about it.
The Bad Wolves instead of just canceling the video altogether, decided to turn the song into a cover and Tribute to Delores. I saw her when i was 10 in small town midwest america right before they got big. To this day, one of my strongest, earliest memories. My first concert and she was part of the 2nd stage outside stage while inside stage was going. I'll never forget. Amazing. Died in car crash on way to help with the 'cover' BW's version ain't bad, but no one can replace her.
Beyond her fantastic voice, Dolores was a poet and composer of the first order. The lyrics of this song are so compelling and heartfelt. Since the dawn of the millennium and all the terror threats post-Sept 11th, 2001, folks have largely forgotten the Irish troubles, which stretched bloodshed, hatred and loss throughout the 20th century. The spectre of this recent violence raised some fears during Brexit, but even then, they were downplayed and largely ignored. The Irish troubles should not be forgotten; they should be an enduring lesson on the toxicity of religious and cultural division with the violence and horror it brings to all involved.
What upsets me is how many Americans use this as an anthem for UP THE IRA AND KILL PEOPLE.
It misses the point of the song of people being brainwashed by hatred.

I watched a concert on T,V with the Cranberries. Instantly fell in love with Delores voice. Within a month I had 4 CDS the raw raspberry growl of her voice is very unique to her. I have heard noone who could match it. .
Delores "peculiar" vocal technique is called "Keening" or sean-no`s. It's a traditional Gaelic/Celtic form of singing almost wailing to morn death. Very fitting given what this song is about.

It was also very much about Catholic versus Protestant values, a theme that has plagued British history since the 1530s.
The line "It's the same old theme since 1916," is a reference to the Easter Uprising in Dublin in 1916, which was brutally repressed by the British. The Republic of Ireland came into being in 1922, first as a member of the British Commonwealth, but it later left the Commonwealth to make its own path. But the Republic never included the six counties around Belfast (which remain a part of the UK).

I was in college when this came out. It was a great year for music. But when this first played on MTV we were stunned, and knew we heard something important.
Such a RAW and powerful song and video. The visuals add so much to the song. The angst strong and thick. The pain and anguish rips out your heart. The danger is palatable. It's in our head!
I am half Irish on my mother's side. The Irish have some of the saddest history ever, especially the Troubles in the 20th century. This is a great song so don't feel bad for smiling; she was quite a talent and it is understandable. But it is also sad as hell at the same time, showing the British occupation and the poverty. Well, she was supposed to do the Bad Wolves version with them but she literally died a day or two before they went into the studio for it. It would’ve been so amazing for her and bad wolves to have done that together. Something we all lost out on.
I grew up in such an awesome time of music. It literally drives my soul to this day.
I saw a lot of concerts in the 1990's. Name a 90's band, I probably caught them. The Cranberries I saw 3 times. The first time was a random dreary Tuesday at a small venue. $3 at the door. The opening act was Counting Crows, who nobody had ever heard of, it was 3 months before their debut CD dropped. They blew the roof off the place. It was a half full venue, and they had the energy for a stadium. I got to talk with Adam Duritz for a few minutes after they played, while the roadies loaded them off, and The Cranberries on. He was just chilling side stage, and was the kindest soul. Then the Cranberries came on, and I was right up front. Delores was no more than 10' away for the entire show. I was instantly mesmerized by her. Easily one of my top 5 90's concert memories. I was crushed when she passed.

One of my fondest memories was seeing Delores O'Riordan and the rest of the Cranberries live, 2009. Excellent.
Still got the seven inch single from '94. That was the year they burst onto the scene in the UK with the single Linger although I think they gained a bit of traction in the US first. This song was clearly about the troubles in Northern Ireland though as I recall, I think it was specifically inspired by the Warrington bombings on the mainland the year before, a town just down the road from where I grew up. Dolores. Such a damn waste of talent and a beautiful soul. Thanks again for your reactions. There's some good 'reactots' up here on UA-cam but yours are absolutely top notch every time.

Wasn't Delores supposed to be going to the studio to record vocals for this track with Bad Wolves right before she died? The Bad Wolves released the song anyway as their tribute. RIP Delores

The first time I heard this announced on the radio I thought there is no way they could do this song justice. No one can... but... I didn't need to be generous with my words to say I didn't hate it.
@@SergioSBloch If you watch the video she was supposed to go into the studio to record her vocals on the very day she died. They then contacted Delores family and asked if they could still release the song. They then proceeded to give all the money they made off of their cover to Delores children.

The song Zombie is about the death of two young boys Johnathan Ball 3, and Tim Parry12, who was killed in Warrington, northwest England., When two bombs that was placed in trash bins were detonated. The IRA believed that the bombings would force the British public to demand that the government to withdraw from Northern Ireland. Another great reaction Bisscute!👍

Thank you Hob Nob. I enjoyed that. I've loved this song for years but it is always special to see someone discover it for the first time (this version anyway).
