They hire the most celebrated and accomplished singers to do the vocals for films. Lata sang for generations and generations of actresses... From the 1940s to the early 2000s.. So the woman you see on screen is an actress lip syncing to latas voice. Indias music industry is VERY different from everywhere else int he world.... because the most popular singers are actually playback singers. Normal pop stars & bands who just release their own music are also big, but film music kinda eclipses everything else in terms of sales & fame.. so the singers who do the vocals for films are the ones who become the biggest stars. In fact, for decades, Lata and her younger sister (Asha Bhosle) pretty much sang all the female songs across almost every single film in Bollywood.... so their catalogue is massive.
