Automotive body and glass repairers restore, refinish, and replace vehicle bodies and frames, windshields, and window glass.
Auto body technicians can’t wipe away the memory of a fender bender, but they can make your car look better. They are responsible for repairing the vehicle body. They work in auto body repair shops at dealerships, independent repair centers or fleet workshops and carry out a range of repairs, from hammering out minor dents to windshield replacement and complete rebuilds. When not repairing collision damage, technicians work on body customization or minor repairs, such as buffing out scratches or refurbishing corrosion damage. Auto body technicians often work directly with customers, reviewing damage reports and preparing cost estimates.

@Agustaf4 yes sirrr!! Got me upset that I didn't choose Auto Body and paint instead of getting my CDL over 21 years ago. But he explained that it depends on how the pay structure is setup. He also said that a lot of dealerships won't pay you like that in the beginning, because of experience. It can be done. Bit it depends on the painter. Because his coworker was a bullshitter and probably didn't make half of that. Luckily their dealership is layed back.

Okay as a body tech who is ase/Icar gold certified. I wanna thank you for posting this video. Also as a tech I'd like to point somethings out form my point of view.
I work for the 3rd biggest body shop in the nation. there is a heavy demand for techs at all times. People like to crash cars.
2nd the pay, I've been hourly/salary and I've been flat rate (commission) you make WAY more on commission than the numbers you have in the video.
3rd your don't need trade school. For this trade you are better off joining the work force as Detailer at a body shop, from there you can ask to become a painters helper or a body man helper. The trade shools don't prepare you for the beast that is insurance body work. You got a 4 hour dent? Fix it in 2. Got a 16 hour job? Try to do it in 8hours, you still make 16 hours. Trade schools don't teach this as it's what most shops want out of a tech. 80-100 book hours a week. I've seen most people out of tech schools fail around 90% of them.
Just my 2 penny's any questions I'm more than willing to answer

You are way off on pay, and ill explain why. While some shops are hourly, many pay 'flat rate'. That means we get paid by the job. If a job pays 10 hours but we finish it in 5, we get paid 10 hours. Therefore, top guys with lots of experience and drive can make over 100k a year. Id guess average pay is 70 to 80k, with a huge difference between new techs and top techs. The downside is that flatrate gets no ovetime.

You can make decent money in this trade. You have to build your skill set and efficiency which takes some years. The pay doesn't come as easy at it used to (insurance companies). The cars are getting more complicated. Most shops are still 100% commission so it's best to work in a high traffic area where work is steady. You won't make six figures in your first year like some would have you believe. Yes, there is health protection if you choose to use them but they are not fool proof. There are risks.

I spent 50 years in that industry it is the most unrewarding and unhealthy job out there you need to know 5 trades condensed into one and the pay doesn't come close to making it worthwhile, the guys you will spend time with usually have no tools and own an old bicycle they expect to use your tools and most are illiterate the customers don't care how well you fix their car because now it is not a virgin anymore what you do get is negative feedback from the boss
who is always pushing you. Do yourself a favour and get a job as a waiter or anything else, the only advantage I can think of is you can always find work because no intelligent individual would work in these places..
