Cheers for this. Just ordered a GB Modern 4 because of this review. I've wanted a jazz bass for ages and this thing sounds incredible and it's just gorgeous
A year later, does he still inspire and make you happy? Also: is the transition from active to passive mode really invisible, as the specification says? Are the pickups noisy/noisy? Is the instrument balanced, is the neck overweight? I look forward to your answers, thank you!
@@kotanel I still absolutely love it. I play it most days. The active/passive switch is just a push/pull pot and it's very smooth, so it's very easy once you get used to the motion. The pickups are only noisy if you absolutely crank the gain, which most pickups are anyway. The neck balances perfectly when played seated, which is what I do. I can't speak for strap balance while standing. For what it's worth, I also own a Dingwall, a far more "premium" guitar, and I play the Cort more.
Hi Marcelo! Thanks so much for responding to my question!! I appreciate it. I actually meant the thickness of the neck from the face fretboard to the back of the neck, like how it would feel between your left hand's fingers and thumb as you play. Perhaps I didn't word my original question clearly.
Assuming that this instrument is being played from factory, and not set up to an individual player's taste, I think it sounds very good. I like a dark bass, and this thing growls on its lower end. As said in the review, this is a MODERN take on a classic sound, and the B string sounds absolutely fine. Given my personal taste, the lowest string (on a 5 string) should be used with the kick drum: it SHOULD growl and punch your chest. Low B is not for fairy showdogs; it's down and dirty, just as it should be...
Great bass and a great review Marcelo. This one is right up my alley. I typically prefer darker basses and gravitate to rosewood necks because of this. My two main basses are a Fender Jazz American Standard and an Ibanez BTB1605. This bass seems be the love child of both. Since I am mostly a rock player and seldom slap, the shortcomings of this bass are not a factor for me. You didn’t mention price and availability in your review; two very important considerations.
Thank you! I don't mention price and availability because for one, its something that can be easily googled and found with minimal effort if someone is interested in the bass. Furthermore, there are people from all over the world that watch these videos (US, Canada, Europe, etc) , and prices/availability vary depending on your location.
As I approach retirement, I am gearing up by searching for a modern excellent quality bass with a killer jazz tone. The light weight of this bass will be perfect for gigging and will be my main bass. Thanks for doing such a great review. Now, to $ave up for this beauty.
Cort has knocked it out of the park with these basses! I see what he is saying about the placement of the knobs (But that is just his style of playing). I'm a plectrum player. So this would not affect me.
As always a great demo video Marcelo, considering cort makes 90% of import basses for a number of the big american companies, sure they have things down pat for their own basses to be a good instrument without the big $$ name, keep on bassin' my friend
It sounds a LOT like my ibanez sr 800. Likely due to me having nord big singles and a john east pre. Mine can get a good bit brighter though. That east pre is so powerful and clean.
This is definitely on the list, really great price but is it a 5 or a 4 for purchase? That’s why o go try the damn things out! Thanks for reviewing this great bass!
Hi Marcelo! Thanks for another great review. I have only concern about single coil pickups as I am having noise from each of my basses, what about with that one? Didn’t hear any noise with all the reviews I could find on youtube, should we assume it’s noiseless? Thanks!
why don't you adjust where you play instead of playing where your fingers strike the knobs. I have made many hand adjustments especially the 2 pickup StingRay bass. I make adjustments
A interesting cool bass!..maybe the best by Cort!?😉..the wood & specs are cool too..also I feel really affordable for many of us!😉..now I'm curious about the weight & neck balance?..anyway, nice demo & playing bass bro!👍🙏👋
Hi Marcelo, I wonder would you be interested to do a review on the Cort Elrick NJS series? Another high end (but still affordable) bass in Cort's production line
ciao marcelo, great review thanks for using 5th string, beautiful bass. Is the push and pull (passive and active) pot... even the tone adjustment in passive mode? I hate passive mode without tone adjustment, which Cort do you suggest for a brighter sounding bass? thanks
Great format for the review; very comprehensive Marcelo! I've been building guitars and basses for 22yrs now, and this is a bass that I would consider buying depending on whether the control locations worked for me. I would say about measuring the scale though, the hook of your tape measure should be "this" side of the nut, not the headstock side (unless that was a visual illusion) plus you should measure from that point to the 12th fret and double the measurement. When saddles are intonated, they don't provide a fixed point of reference from when to derive a scale length as they lengthen the open string length slightly by moving backwards from the "minimum" intonation point. It's a bit confusing as the witness points on the saddles look further forward than what would be a minimum intonation point for a 35" bass, and way too far back for a 34" bass. Is it possible that the scale length is in fact metric? I've only heard of a few manufacturers that do this (including Ibanez) but it's worth consideration as it could be an 880mm scale, or 34,65".
Hi Marcelo, Thanks for this review,...very intersting Is it possible to review another New Cort Bass. It is the cort elrick nsj5 It's New Jazz bass. Thanks for sharing S.V
2 volume controls are stupid. Leo did it to cancel hum. My new Fender Jazz Ultra even has a balance control. I have even changed my others to blend instead of 2 volumes. Would never buy this bass for that reason. Easy fix on passive but harder with active
I've been trying to decide which bass to buy between exactly this Cort and that blue sparkle Ray35! Could you do a tone comparison between those maybe? I know that your Ray34 doesn't sound exactly like the Ray35, but I've not seen anyone else having these two basses at hand to do a comparison.
I dont have this bass at hand anymore, I already sent it back... but you can compare how it sounds in this video with how the Ray34/35 sounds in other videos. Completely different sound and basses
@@TheBassWizard To bad. It's very difficult to tell what the differences are when everyone has their own ways of recording the basses. Different amps, different mics, different DI boxes, different audio interfaces etc. Thanks anyways!
Great demo to be fair. However this sounds extremely rough to me for a Jazz Bass. In fact to me it doesn't even sound like a Jazz. Not in comparison to a good old Fender or Squire J. Doesn't have that clarity and super sharp enunciation nor fullness I would want from a jazz bass. You're correct in saying it sounds darker. However as a bassist I wouldn't want this bass.
I dont think the point was to sound exactly like a vintage jazz bass, but rather something different and modern. Its definitely not the best option for someone who is looking for a typical Jazz sound
@@TheBassWizard I can appreciate that much. The going price for this instrument I think is rather lofty. Taking into considering I have a Squire 70s Vintage Modified Jazz Bass that went for 370 brand new when I got it. Which to my ears sounds more akin to that classic Marcus Miller tone. That being said yes I concur with your statement. Cort definitely wanted to create a different type of jazz bass. I won't discount the fact this bass would work well depending on one's tonal preferences. Just isn't my taste. On that note I've enjoyed your videos these past 2 years. Learned a lot. For instance how to do a basic setup just to start. Look forward to more reviews in the future.
The setup wasnt low at all... and because it was just a review unit and not my bass, I didnt even touch the setup and played it as I received it, which was more of a medium action and actually higher than I would usually have it.
Great review. Overall, a good bass, but probably not for me. The point you made about the knob placement isn't ideal at all. Fairly versatile bass. Sound wise will depend on what music and style you like to play. Cheers
@@TheBassWizard thanks for the quick reply. Beautiful instrument with great tones. Love the placement of the pickups too, a secret key to the tone.
awesome detailed demo with superb playing and good balance of talking/playing. kudos for you, exemplary guitar demo video!
