These sounds remind me of when I was on a submarine on sonar watch. We would hear all kinds of eerie sounds such as whales making deep groaning type sounds, dolphins whistling, shrimp clicking, ships in the distance, swishing sounds. It was so relaxing. I would close my eyes and imagine I was outside the submarine and a part of that strange, awesome world.
My brother was on a nuclear sub 15 years ago and he said when they did sonar exercises he could hear the dolphins crying out in agony. Is this true? Not sure if he was telling the truth or not. This was between Guam and north to Japan
@@a_s2557 Yes, for the most part I enjoyed it after I "qualified". Qualifying on a submarine is like working on a masters or doctorate degree. When we were on patrol and running drills, there was precious little time for sleep. After I qualified I enjoyed it much more. We are surrounded by professionals so we have a lot of confidence in not getting in "harms-way". But, we still had three mishaps. One could have killed us all if two guys hadn't done the right thing.
This is one of the reasons why I really appreciate living in Finland. Our nature is a gift. It's just the coolest thing and it makes you feel so small.
I live at the foot of a Scandinavian forest, maybe I should just abandon school and work and all that bullshit and go live with the mooses and wolves 😂

Even though it looks frozen solid, there is so much going on in that ice. I think what we are listening to is the plates of ice rubbing against each other, and trapped air that is shifting underneath the plates of ice. It is basically, the sounds of the physics of water, and it's so wondrously sacred. Thank you Jonna, it is very kind of you to let us hear it.

Not sure why, but as soon as I started listening to this, my brain seemed to decide it was time to sleep. Oddly, sleeping listening to these noises feels like an instinct. Same here. I heard a similar (but different) sound over two decades ago when I was pregnant with my kid and was having a doppler scan done. It was between the heartbeats. Makes me wonder if the soothing effect it has comes from the same place as the instinctive knowledge of our mothers' voices we have as infants comes from. Holy shit my kid is 20yo. Going to go mentally digest that (again) while listening to this and doing housework the long way.
My impression of the sound is, the Earth is making noise in the most lifeless season in the year. That Earth will always show there is life and she is in control.

This made me realize, how little we actually listen to our mother nature. Everyone walks around with headphones (including me right now) but nature's voice isn't listened to.
Listening to music in a city or busier part isn’t anything bad, since there’s nothing much to listen to anyways, except like traffic. However in a forest or by a lake etc. you should definitely listen to nature rather then music
I love this. I understand how so many find it both calming and unsettling (frightening). I think it is because we are listening directly to Nature, mother nature, Earth, whatever we identify. And Nature is both nurturing and powerful, and humanity has distanced itself from it a bit, so that when we hear it so clearly, it can both feel familiar and soothing, but also overwhelming in its intensity. It is all of nature, life, death, growth, decay, recycling and stillness. So often we live in environments of our own making, that lull us into thinking we have Nature under our full control, and it seems simple things like this sound are sharp reminders that we do not. That the earth is ancient, far more ancient than are most ancient ancestors, and this reminds me of that long history....
A year ago I moved to a much colder climate and with the help of local friends I got in touch with real nature for the first time in my life. And I mean the scary type of nature. The woods, the cold, the ice, the silence. It was sometimes like a beautiful dream, which ended in tears pretty quickly if I wasn't careful. The cold...it can hurt you. The cold can physically hurt and damage you, if you are not prepared for it. I've cried on multiple occasions, because the cold was causing me pain. After a few months I got used to it somehow. People, who grew up in a cold climate are a different type of strong.
When I looked at the ice, I sometimes thought that it was a sky, a galaxy, a body with vessels, forests. The places that have experienced violent splits are the most interesting and amazing places. The music of the ocean is like talking whales, like a world in which is mysterious and painful. The ice conveyed to me the feeling of aching pain.
That is an achingly beautiful description of this mysterious ice song. It does remind me of the songs of whales and dolphins, yet stranger and more eerie.
People have been hearing these similar sounds from the sky all over the world, sky trumpet sounds. Every ancient culture in recorded history believed we have a covering over our world, they could be right and it could be made with ice. Back in the 80s sometime, probably a year or so before my Dad died, he, quite out of the blue, decided to go for a late afternoon drive. We drove out to Silver Lake, a provincial park near Ottawa, my home town. It was either late or early in the winter. I think late.... We stood on the shore as the sun was going down and we could hear this odd but musical “glunking” sound... There were intervals and speeded up bits and different tones... It was haunting. We finally realized the source. The lake had been frozen but there had been a thaw and the ice had been sort of slushy and people had been throwing snowballs and chunks of snow into the ice, leaving holes of different sizes. The temperature had dropped and the slush had hardened. As the waves under the ice rolled along, they hit the holes, they created a “glunk” sound. Depending on size of the wave and the size of the hole, and the space between each wave and the tones were different and the “tune” different. In a million years, I doubt that the exact conditions would have been in conjunction and that there would have been a human to hear it. It was pure magic...

I live here in northern Finland. It really is a gift to have been born and raised so close to nature.. To those who says they want to live here, I must say that the darkness in winters, when we have 4-5 hours of sunlight is not for everyone... The moonlight becomes your friend, its amazingly bright some nights.💚🙏
The lack of sun would deteriorated my mental health. I live in Utah and I'm content with the winters here. Just the right amount of skiing. Then it melts too soon and through summer I'm just dreaming of snow.
That makes me wanna live there even more. I really like long dark days. having to stand in the sun every so often to feel rejuvenated again. The sharp pain in your lungs from the cold when you have to leave your house in the middle of the night. God it sounds like a dream to me. Jesus I'm "that" kind of Canadian lmao. Not a bad thing though.
@@Cecibug1 I live in one of the warmest places in Canadain and it's absolutely perfect here. You can drive for 4 hours and go from a semi arid dessert to the rocky mountains to rain forest then to the coast with islands. Summers are hot as hell. There is a massive fresh water lake to swin in or boat on. There are secluded lakes and amazing scenery in every direct you go into the woods. All 4 season, and Winters are just right -15 at the most but still dumps 5 feet of fresh snow on the mountain. It's absolutely incredible here.

When I was young, my friends and I would have an annual “Shackleton Party.” We would camp on the ice, drink, read poetry and sing. As the night wore down we would get quieter and eventually fall asleep listening to these sounds. I miss those times.
I heard this last year in a cabin in the woods close to a lake in north of Sweden and i cant forget the sound. It was the weekend the lake was getting frozen. So unique !

Thank you Jonna! I was witness to this very phenomenon just a few nights ago. I moved recently to a small inland lake in South Western Ontario (Canada) and have been marveled by its beauty every day. However, the experience of hearing the lake sing was completely unexpected. Truly magical - as if the lake was calling out to the heavens. I do t know if you’re gonna read this, but just wanna let you know that a year ago I had brain surgery and there was no medicine that can help with the insomnia and worst headaches,, then My sister-in-law gave me this gadget that plays white noise ( didn’t help either) and one day scrolling through UA-cam came across with this Video… whit tear in my eyes I say THANK YOU, these videos had help me more than any modern medicine or Doctors….I sleep like a Baby, since then…i can’t believe that Mother Nature healed me … THANK GOD, and THANK YOU 🙏!!
If this is what a simple lake or river delta sounds like when frozen, imagine what one of the icy planets or moons in the solar system must sound like all year round. Imagine being the first being to set foot on the extraterrestrial icy surface of one of Jupiter's planet sized ice moons, like Europa or Callisto.
Watching this, I can see now why people believe in spirits, the fae, and other supernatural beings. Imagine its the 1500s and you are walking through the woods at night to bring home supper to your family, and you hear an odd singing/moaning from the woods. I've listened to these sounds for many, many hours during my ice fishing adventures here in Canada, they are beautiful and sometimes eerie. It's even better when you are laying directly on the ice, you can feel the sounds through your entire body and all around you.
It sounds like some alien spaceship is underneath and the distress signal is echoing off the ice. It's eerie and beautiful. It also sounds like the call of Mother Nature from deep below the surface
I love how people are describing all the different things this sounds like. An ultrasound, whales, caves. This is the music of the Earth that echoes in all of us. I remember hearing a similar sound myself when I had to have an echocardiogram and the technician turned it on so I could hear, too. We are made of music, surrounded by music, a part of this ancient song.

My dad and I lived on a lake when I was growing up. I used to put on all my snow gear during storms and nights where the moon was a lamp and I would listen. I wouldn't do anything. I would just sit for hours until I needed to get up. My heart ached to hear this again. I send you very deep, heartfelt thanks. Especially the pure gift of it having no ads and moving pictures. I'm 60 years old and never in my life even heard of such a thing as this! I agree with other comments that it sounds a bit similar to whales, but this is eerie in a way. Awesome, frightening, weird and beautiful are some other worda that come to mind. Imagine being in a cabin here, and never having heard of a frozen lake making these sounds. Would you be absolutely freaking out? I know I would! Kimd of freaking out anyway! LOL

@@ranivacar one is induced and brought on by ones anxiety know as a anxiety attack. And a panic attack is from now where you don’t get a warning you just get triggered without thought or control. When either of these happen you’re in fight or flight cause your brain thinks it’s in danger. Anxiety can be rough sometimes from my personal experience :)

The sounds!! I once stood out on a frozen lake in Norway and as I closed my eyes to meditate I almost jumped out of my body as I felt this strong vibration combined with this strange sound underneath my feet. The sound would be just under my feet then travel at light speed hundreds of meters away and bounce around. Just as in this video the ice was making all sorts of noises. I had never experienced such a sensation, it was really exciting and terrifying at the same time, lol :)
Probably whales or big fish underneath. Either that or the sound waves made from them were still loud enough to still vibrate the ice beneath you. But you never know. Could've been a minor "earthquake" of something hitting the lake bottom or something similar. These sounds do seem like whales or bubbles popping
@@ShadowSkyX There are no whales in Scandinavian lakes. Earthquakes are also extremely rare, barely noticeable the few times they have occured. The phenomenon is called "acoustic dispersion" if you want to read up on it.
I'm always overthinking and not necessary in a bad way but i find it hard to just relax and not think about anything. This is my first time hear ice sound. It was strange almost like it's speaking to my soul and makes my head blank in a good way. I've never felt this clam ever. Wow this is definitely something new for me. Loveed it.
That's a solid point. More life lives outside our so called 'houses' than inside. We just see our homes as boxes with a roof to protect us from the elements and from animals. But in reality the world is our one big house without a roof and we just destroy it. We wouldn't destroy our own house for no reason would we, why don't we see this?

Even though it looks frozen solid, there is so much going on in that ice. I think what we are listening to is the plates of ice rubbing against each other, and trapped air that is shifting underneath the plates of ice. It is basically, the sounds of the physics of water, and it's so wondrously sacred. Thank you Jonna, it is very kind of you to let us hear it.
As a person who spends my entire life in a tropical country, and even never feels snow myself, I never knew that ice can make this kind of sound before, hauntingly beautiful... thank you for sharing this, I would have never known

Same here. I heard a similar (but different) sound over two decades ago when I was pregnant with my kid and was having a doppler scan done. It was between the heartbeats. Makes me wonder if the soothing effect it has comes from the same place as the instinctive knowledge of our mothers' voices we have as infants comes from.

I've been totally thinking it sounds just like whales.
we lived by water when i was a child. this is the winter soundtrack. i would sometimes lay on the ice to listen to it sing. it was magical.
This made me realize, how little we actually listen to our mother nature. Everyone walks around with headphones (including me right now) but nature's voice isn't listened to.

I love this. I understand how so many find it both calming and unsettling (frightening). I think it is because we are listening directly to Nature, mother nature, Earth, whatever we identify. And Nature is both nurturing and powerful, and humanity has distanced itself from it a bit, so that when we hear it so clearly, it can both feel familiar and soothing, but also overwhelming in its intensity. It is all of nature, life, death, growth, decay, recycling and stillness. So often we live in environments of our own making, that lull us into thinking we have Nature under our full control, and it seems simple things like this sound are sharp reminders that we do not. That the earth is ancient, far more ancient than are most ancient ancestors, and this reminds me of that long history....

A year ago I moved to a much colder climate and with the help of local friends I got in touch with real nature for the first time in my life. And I mean the scary type of nature. The woods, the cold, the ice, the silence. It was sometimes like a beautiful dream, which ended in tears pretty quickly if I wasn't careful. The cold...it can hurt you. The cold can physically hurt and damage you, if you are not prepared for it. I've cried on multiple occasions, because the cold was causing me pain. After a few months I got used to it somehow. People, who grew up in a cold climate are a different type of strong.

When I looked at the ice, I sometimes thought that it was a sky, a galaxy, a body with vessels, forests. The places that have experienced violent splits are the most interesting and amazing places. The music of the ocean is like talking whales, like a world in which is mysterious and painful. The ice conveyed to me the feeling of aching pain.
That is an achingly beautiful description of this mysterious ice song. It does remind me of the songs of whales and dolphins, yet stranger and more eerie.
I think you can see how old myths and legends came about when you hear this.
People have been hearing these similar sounds from the sky all over the world, sky trumpet sounds. Every ancient culture in recorded history believed we have a covering over our world, they could be right and it could be made with ice. Back in the 80s sometime, probably a year or so before my Dad died, he, quite out of the blue, decided to go for a late afternoon drive. We drove out to Silver Lake, a provincial park near Ottawa, my home town.
It was either late or early in the winter. I think late....
We stood on the shore as the sun was going down and we could hear this odd but musical “glunking” sound... There were intervals and speeded up bits and different tones... It was haunting. We finally realized the source.
The lake had been frozen but there had been a thaw and the ice had been sort of slushy and people had been throwing snowballs and chunks of snow into the ice, leaving holes of different sizes. The temperature had dropped and the slush had hardened.
As the waves under the ice rolled along, they hit the holes, they created a “glunk” sound. Depending on size of the wave and the size of the hole, and the space between each wave and the tones were different and the “tune” different.
In a million years, I doubt that the exact conditions would have been in conjunction and that there would have been a human to hear it.
It was pure magic...

The lack of sun would deteriorated my mental health. I live in Utah and I'm content with the winters here. Just the right amount of skiing. Then it melts too soon and through summer I'm just dreaming of snow.
That makes me wanna live there even more. I really like long dark days. having to stand in the sun every so often to feel rejuvenated again. The sharp pain in your lungs from the cold when you have to leave your house in the middle of the night. God it sounds like a dream to me.

@@Cecibug1 I live in one of the warmest places in Canadain and it's absolutely perfect here. You can drive for 4 hours and go from a semi arid dessert to the rocky mountains to rain forest then to the coast with islands. Summers are hot as hell. There is a massive fresh water lake to swin in or boat on. There are secluded lakes and amazing scenery in every direct you go into the woods. All 4 season, and Winters are just right -15 at the most but still dumps 5 feet of fresh snow on the mountain. It's absolutely incredible here.

When I was young, my friends and I would have an annual “Shackleton Party.” We would camp on the ice, drink, read poetry and sing. As the night wore down we would get quieter and eventually fall asleep listening to these sounds. I miss those times.

I heard this last year in a cabin in the woods close to a lake in north of Sweden and i cant forget the sound. It was the weekend the lake was getting frozen. So unique !

I was witness to this very phenomenon just a few nights ago. I moved recently to a small inland lake in South Western Ontario (Canada) and have been marveled by its beauty every day. However, the experience of hearing the lake sing was completely unexpected. Truly magical - as if the lake was calling out to the heavens.

I remember hearing a similar sound myself when I had to have an echocardiogram and the technician turned it on so I could hear, too. Reading this I first thought it was meant as in before humans were on earth. These sounds have been heard so long before we were even here.
I'm 60 years old and never in my life even heard of such a thing as this! I agree with other comments that it sounds a bit similar to whales, but this is eerie in a way. Awesome, frightening, weird and beautiful are some other worda that come to mind. Imagine being in a cabin here, and never having heard of a frozen lake making these sounds. @@ranivacar one is induced and brought on by ones anxiety know as a anxiety attack. And a panic attack is from now where you don’t get a warning you just get triggered without thought or control. When either of these happen you’re in fight or flight cause your brain thinks it’s in danger. Anxiety can be rough sometimes from my personal experience :)

The sounds!! I once stood out on a frozen lake in Norway and as I closed my eyes to meditate I almost jumped out of my body as I felt this strong vibration combined with this strange sound underneath my feet. The sound would be just under my feet then travel at light speed hundreds of meters away and bounce around. Just as in this video the ice was making all sorts of noises. I had never experienced such a sensation, it was really exciting and terrifying at the same time, lol :)

Probably whales or big fish underneath. Either that or the sound waves made from them were still loud enough to still vibrate the ice beneath you. But you never know. Could've been a minor "earthquake" of something hitting the lake bottom or something similar. These sounds do seem like whales or bubbles popping
@@ShadowSkyX There are no whales in Scandinavian lakes. Earthquakes are also extremely rare, barely noticeable the few times they have occured. The phenomenon is called "acoustic dispersion" if you want to read up on it.

I'm always overthinking and not necessary in a bad way but i find it hard to just relax and not think about anything.
This is my first time hear ice sound. It was strange almost like it's speaking to my soul and makes my head blank in a good way.

We are living in paradise.Shame that many are careless about the beauty of our HOME.
That's a solid point. More life lives outside our so called 'houses' than inside. We just see our homes as boxes with a roof to protect us from the elements and from animals. But in reality the world is our one big house without a roof and we just destroy it.
We wouldn't destroy our own house for no reason would we, why don't we see this?

Me! I didn’t watch anything like this until now so this is the first... So idk why, I just wanna go there so bad.. If not living there than just for 1 year or smthng... Idk just the more I see from that “world” the most I wanna just go there, like it was my home or something like this..:( But my parents hate cold so I don’t really think that we’ll go there, just if I’ll be an adult and have money to go alone...:/

In listening it brought to mind the whale songs in the worlds oceans - it is not the same but quite close to their songs - Thank you very much for this I love it and the 10 hour one.
