Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.
    Reel mower vs rotary mower is a greatquestion. One step to achieving the ultimate lawn fix is to select a mower that cuts well. The best lawn mower 2020 in my opinion is allett mowers. I prefer a reel mow vs rotary mow because the cut quality of the reel mower is superior. No matter how you look at it a push reel mower vs a push rotary mower the reel mower wins. The reel cuts like sharp scissors where the rotary mower cuts like a machete.

    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

    Same mower as the guy who won the lawn pattern world championship , massive difference in price because this real mower is for the discerning owner who wants the best but to get the best out of this mower the grass needs to be cut short and minimum every two days and the suffice needs to be perfectly level , good luck .

    Looks like a fun mower Ginja! Me, I got a 21" deck (Honda HRC) last season and love it! Since your 20B cuts cleaner, can you violate the 1/3 rule, or not really? I just stepped my mow height down to 2" and I am scalping in spots where it's uneven. I am mowing 2 times per week right now. I think if I were to cut at 1" I would have to mow every other day.

    I just got a new house I have two big dogs that are beating up my back yard. I wanted to try and Aerate it and over seed to try and fix some of the problems. I think I am running into a thatch problem all over the yard. cause I have had the dogs out front and they don’t pee in the same spots but it is killing the grass every time they pee. When I part my grass I don’t see dirt. I have ordered the sun joe de thatcher it is coming in like two weeks I wanted to de thatch and aerate then over seed the whole yard would that stress out my lawn to much?

    • @pestandlawnginja

      I too mowed approx 0.5 acre with a no engine reel mower. My dad was concerned with the safety issues of the power mowers of the 1960's. Then the drop dead engine was invented and I got a power mower and was glad . I have a 12 year old mower and when it needs replaced a 'reel' mower is being considered. Grass and debris in the streets ? Not back in my day.

    • @howlis
      @howlis 4 роки тому +1

      I've used this type of mower for many years and it's not necessary to have it professionally sharpened every year, unless you hit a stone and dink the blade. These mowers don't like stones, any lawn should be well raked with a powered lawn rake to remove anything that could damage the blade. The design of the blade is such that the two blades sharpen each other as they cut, once in a while I attach a sharpener to the bottom blade and run the blade while the machine is static for about five seconds, that's all it takes. An oil change and a new spark plug once a year is all that's necessary.

  • @rbarr775
    @rbarr775 4 роки тому +3

    Reel mowers were common in the 60's, but they were top-heavy and fairly unwieldy, even propelled units, so it took an older teen / adult to operate it. I suspect the rotary became dominant simply because you could pawn the mowing job off to 11-year-olds. This was when I was around 11. Now I'm really showing my age, because I don't recall seeing a kid of ANY age mowing a lawn in at least ten years, so we've come full circle to an adult-only chore.

    My lawn is uneven so a reel mower is a no go from the start. I wouldn’t replace my Honda anyway. It’s a great mower and it’s really reliable. I probably wouldn’t get a British mower because my brother had a British sports car.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 роки тому

      LOL love it! I think too many people get caught up on thinking the area has to be flat to use a reel mower. it doesn't. the roller causes less friction than the 4 wheels on a traditional rotary mower. There are plenty 2 wheel reel mowers as well.

    I just started reel mowing.. I have a true cot 21 inch and I bought a Sun Joe cordless 16 inch cut. I use my Kobalt 80 volt to do the trimming or outline of curbside and driveway, sidewalk. I remove all grass with my sweeper. Ok. Back to the reel mowers. Since I've started reel mowing, my yard looks 100 percent better. The Bermuda grows tighter or more dense. It's unbelievable the difference. Now it took about 3 cuttings, but you notice it. I cutt my Bermuda twice a week and only trim once a week. I like both reel mowers, but favor the Sun Joe. Quieter than the tru cut and also the tru cut will work the hell out of you. The Sun Joe you do have to push. But the reels are power by the ion 24 volt battery... I also purchased a Sun Joe Scarifier to use next year. I bought a dethatcher but quickly learned, you don't Dethatch Bermuda or any other grasses that have runner's. It will YANK the grass out of the lawn. Bad advice from someone on UA-cam about using a dethatcher on Bermuda. Have fun...

    I’ve seen quite a few of these introduced this year on some channels did Allet just start importing into the US recently or something? They look really quality, the cartridge system is very similar to swardman mowers. I just wish I could find a reel mower that’s less than $2,000 the wife won’t let me spend that much on a mower 🤣. For now I’ll just stick with my $20 Craigslist special lol. I did my first cut of the season this year at 1” and it does a beautiful cut for being a manual push reel mower. Just a ton of work and no rollers. I wish more people used reel mowers around here so the second hand market was bigger.

I used to have the Cylinder mover. But throw away after a yr later when the cylinder stuck during cutting the grass. B'cos the blade need to be sharpen and I can't find a service center here. That really piss me off and spend more time on my lawn work due to the blade issue....

    Reel Mower VS Rotary Mower is like Apple vs. Oranges. When your lawn becomes a hobby....expense is not an object and cutting the grass is no longer a chore. A reel mower is ideal for Bermuda and grasses that looks great cut short. A rotary mower works great for tall fescue which does better (healthier with deeper roots) when you let it grow to 4 inches. Getting a reel mower blade sharpened is a pain plus you need to have your lawn leveled as flat as a possible. Like I stated. when you spend 2K plus on a reel mower and all those accessories, your lawn is now a hobby.

    I still have the same Snapper 21" rotary mower that I used back when I was mowing 30+ yards a week in high school. (early 90s) The B&S finally gave up the ghost 2 seasons ago and I replaced it with a (DON'T JUDGE ME!) Harbor Freight engine, that has run like a champ thus far. In my opinion this thing has far and away the best self propelled mechanism of any mower I've used. It's easy to engage and disengage, it's rear wheel drive so it will still pull itself when you lift the front wheels up (if you want it to) it actually has a differential, so it doesn't tear the grass up when you make turns and the turntable transmission is dead simple and gives a great range of speeds. Having said all of that, I'm _trying_ to get my lawn level but with some medium/large oak and maple trees the roots are making that a challenge, but if I can get it decently level I may look into getting a reel mower at least for the front yard.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 роки тому

      Don't get down on the harbor freight motors. they're basically re-purposed honda engines. same parts and everything. I buy them for my service company. wouldn't have it any other way. predator for life.

    Ginja, how does the Allett compare to the Toro Greensmaster 1600 you gave Jimmy recently?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 роки тому +1

      Great question. My yard is smaller by comparison so the larger machine was harder to maneuver. Overall I prefer the Allett. The blade control and throttle control are at your finger tips. the toro blade controller is off to the side. I like the 6 blade of the allett because I'll be cutting above .5 of an inch. cuts up to 1.25" no issues with having to go over it 3 times or more. I can also adjust the height of cut with the twist of a knob.
      I do miss the wider deck the toro gave me. I like the heavier rollers and machine of the toro. but we're comparing a $16,000 machine to a $2300 machine.
      Overall the cut quality has been awesome on the Allett and I'm super pleased.
