The only good thing I can say about the laminated Master #3 is it got me into locksport. If all I had around me was real high security locks, I probably wouldn't be doing locksport as a hobby, and it is so much fun, with a totally awesome community. A really complicated knot on a thick rope would keep most people out, as long, or longer than these Master padlocks.
William Mancel I have another: They're great for weighing down a rope you're trying to get through a pipe or something, or you want to get it over, for example, a tree branch. It's great for that too! Since we're not touching the mechanism, there's a relatively low rate of spontaneous openings. (Has happened to me once, going over a tree it popped open on impact on the other side...😂)
Michael Berthelsen 😂🤣😁🔒or, a Small boat anchor. Held in the hand with the shackle protruding, it makes a very effective brass knuckle, and with your rope, it could probably beat the hell out of a rabbit, if you were starving. 🐰🐇 I use two master lock commercial #3's in the empty container I use for my camera stand. They weigh it down, so I don't knock it over as easily. 😁
Excellent demonstration on how scarily easy it is to get into these things! I always enjoy seeing a new bosnianbill master lock video, in hopes that people will have their eyes opened, and make master lock put a little more value in their locks! Also for the pure entertainment of Bill ripping on them!
Hell, it would take you longer to lock them on and off...! You (as the owner) would be tempted to use the mess of keys rather than a pick. Kind of looses the point when the thief isn't AS fast, but way FASTER than you.😂
I've got a #3 locking my garden shed up, kind of as a means to prove breaking and entering. The real security is the connection to my home's burglar alarm system, and roommates that work from home and are a pretty decent shot with a .30-30.
At my work they said that we had to use their supplied Master locks on our lockers because they had a duplicate key, I just cut out a lock from paper and threaded it through the hole, same amount of security in my opinion
Thank you for teaching me the locks we use at work are garbage and I can decouple our boat without the key if I really need to! Best of luck to your future endeavors!
I tried what you showed and couldn’t believe how easy it was! I opened all the master locks I could find in the house. They seem pretty useless now :-)
Speed picking, BB vs LPL! The battle of the hands. Any lock of any kind makes the case for breaking and entering as opposed to just walking in so Master locks do actually have a purpose. I gagged a little when I typed that last part.
skygh You confused the hell out of me when you wrote it... I wondered how you could... Then I realized that considering the ignorance in the legal system, they might actually consider a Master lock that way... What a sad thought... I'd more think of a Master lock like an invitation, myself... Other locks are challenges, but Master?! 'Come right in' more like it.
It will stop toddlers. That's about it. There were instructors at Andropov Institute that taught this kind of stuff. Students were told to bring in a lock, and the one instructor plowed through them all in about 15 minutes. Then the other instructor in about half that. It is an art, takes patience and finesse. Practice, and knowledge of what's actually inside the particular lock. You actually have to feel it and make a mental picture of the inside of it, then you'll go faster. GREAT VIDEO. If you are short on cash, Master Lock's competitors may give you big bucks for this video. NOT kidding.
Anyone else remember the old MasterLock commercial, where they shoot them. I think it is now time you did that for your audience, Bill. Mind you, that would be a great competition at the next lock picking convention.
Great video :) I would love to see you pick a MasterLock with a bobby pin or bent paper clip like they do in the movies just to prove it really can be done.
In the past, I've commented saying "yeah but you probably have poor bitting on those locks" and also said "well maybe that is technically okay, since technically they exist unmodified", but now I know that high security locks, prohibit poor bitting that allows easy raking open. Masterlock doesn't care about bitting, you can probably get a 6-6-7-7 lock from them. A high security lock would be more like 2-5-3-7-4
Over here in the UK, we have the equivalent of the Master Lock. It's the 'blackspur'. It looks identical to the Master; even has the plastic band around the bottom, but which says blackspur on it. All it takes to open them is a few seconds with a rake.
I went into Lowe’s the other day as I am a carpenter. Of course I’m always take a stroll through the lock section hoping that maybe they had something worth buying. Nope, but I noticed that they had a Best Lock IC core on one of their displays that locked up the more expensive items. I asked an employee if they happen to sell this type lock and the response was “ nope we only sell the cheap locks”. Cheap of course meaning price. But all I heard was Masterlock meaning junk.
Well that confirms what I've always have heard, A Lock, Is Only There To Keep An Honest Man, Honest. Especially if they are only trusting in a Master Lock #3.
hey Bill try zipping with a half diamond.. but in , instead of going out. I use a Southord half on these with a bent tensioner and they fall open with one zip! Light to medium tension and... its not even fun anymore_
I use one on my locker. I was picking before I bought it and I put it on my locker knowing about how bad they were because I knew there was a chance I would see it get cut off.
I'm in Canada, I've never used a Master Lock, but I do see them in stores all the time. I have opened a master lock at my parent's place with a hammer when I was a kid and then re-locked it when I was done, lol. Everyone knows Master Locks are a joke, but no one cares, they often use them for things they don't care about that much anyways. Besides, what's the point in putting a nice expensive lock on a shed when you can just kick through or cut through the walls with a portable saws-all or use a crowbar and rip the lock clasp off the door itself? A lock doesn't guarantee security.
Destructive and noisy for amateurs, yes... but these days, even the noisy amateurs don't get caught cuz no one cares. ppl are so involved in their social media bullcrap that no one pays attention to the world around them and couldn't care less about a saw noise happening at night unless it's keeping them from falling asleep, which of course sawing only takes 30 seconds or less, not long enough to bother complaining about... so they get away with it. Also, I know plenty of ways to break into stuff without touching a single lock and without making much noise at all. Security these days is a blatant joke. Which is why I went overkill with my own custom level of security.
I've never committed a crime either, but that doesn't mean I don't know how things work. Being a home renovator dabbling in re-keying / pinning locks and monitoring 12 security cameras for the building I'm in, witnessing many crimes on said cameras, I learned how to make improvements in and around the building. Also, cops are ridiculously lazy, half the time, they couldn't even be bothered to look at the camera footage.
You are the best friend of the Masterlock manufacturer, you do what you don't do to examine their products. By the way, do you know if there are differences between products for the European market? There is a padlock that comes here for approximately $ 19 to change, and that has a key of those flats with holes ... It is the cheapest on the market by far, but is this product worth it? By price it is cheaper than any abus shabby (titalium), than any Yale (and I have two of his laminates of 50 and 60mm with saw key), or some Spanish autochthonous manufacturers, such as Lynx (commissioned an aluminum model of 50mm Abus clone), Ifam or similar, I also have a 50mm FAC model, which for cost and construction I do not see badly ... until I have seen videos in which they open it in 25 seconds, it still seems better than the Master That you know so well.
Hey Bill, nice video by the way. On a side note I have a brand new Master Lock 5 that I got from Home Depot that I can’t get in for the life of me! Granted though I am a novice picker, but I have been able to both rake and spp Kuickset locks, shlague, a trigger lock and materlock 150 but for the life of me I can’t get in to this damn lock! I’ve tried everything from SPP to raking to even using a bump key from sparrows and no dice. As far as picks I’ve tried are southord jackknife and sparrows tuxedos in addition to trying their bump key which had yielded no success. WTF!! I think Masterlocks have been well underrated as to their security given the locks I was very easily able to get in to and that I haven’t been able to get in to this new Masterlock number 5 despite weeks of effort. I’ve also tried varying tensions between soft to light tensioning as well as using sparrows top of the key way tensioners. I’ve seen you do ML #5 but not the newest current incarnation which has a more restricted keyhole from the ones you’ve done. I’d love to see you go to Home Depot or wherever and get the brand new current version of the Master Lock #5 as well as getting any advice you may be able to provide as far as picking it. Until then it looks like this New Master Lock number 5 will be going in to my own naughty bucket for the time being. 😕 in fact I may just return it since I’m feeling utterly defeated at this point and I’m well within my return period. I may try buying a ML 3 instead and see how that goes.
Don't get discouraged! One of the biggest mistakes I made as a new picker was to give away locks that I was unable to pick. Then, as my skills improved, I had to go out and buy the darn things AGAIN! If you can't pick a lock, just stash it in your naughty bucket and pull it out every month or so to give it a try. Eventually, your skills will catch up.
Bosnianbill Hi Bill, thanks for the reply. That’s a good point, just to save the locks and re visit later as my skill progresses. In the meanwhile I also have the sparrows nigh school locks I’ve been practicing on as well. I think I still may have to pick me up a ML3 tho since that one appears to be an easier pick than the 5.

Well have master lock now .. For 3 years still working fine .. And hey if i forget the key .. Ill just pick it :P -- Only need 2 hairpins
Great idea would be that if you can pick lock in store under lets say 2 min you can take it home for free. That would be pretty convincing to make better security locks :D
A little over a year ago the Lock Picking Lawer spp'd (not raked) 16 MasterLock #3's in just under four minutes. I wonder how fast Bill would have been with just a medium hook. 😉
The great Shaolin of lock picking knows no pins that the unruly Master of " I lock you out, can out power the great Bosnianbill of "Oh I can. And story will continue!
Bill, it take you longer to pick up the lock itself than picking it hahaaa... Sooooo funny... PS : If something of value was to get stolen after securing it with one of these locks. Do you think you could sue the company?

Well when it comes to my vintage matchbox got to be Abloy or better and a minimum of three levels of physical security. Maybe that new Canadian lock. The master lock is only to keep the children from playing with them.
ariesmars29 - it might be good for master lock sales too - it makes me want to go get one to try. If I can do some locks (other than my clear training lock), it'd be kinda cool. I have a warded lock, but none of the special warded picks. It's double sided, so that might be part of the reason I can't do it with the paperclip like so many have done. Otherwise... I think I might go see if I can get a #3 master just to see if I can actually do it. I don't know if they say #3 on the lock or on the package though, so I'll just have to guess if it doesn't.
Bill - are those #3's or #5's? I'm at Lowe's trying to get a great little practice lock. The #5's look like the ones in your video. #3's are really small. They look like big luggage locks. Is the difference between a 3 and a 5 just the size, or are there more pins etc in a 5? Thanks!
The only good thing I can say about the laminated Master #3 is it got me into locksport. I agree. But they shouldn’t be your only option at Home Cheapo or bLowes. And touted as high security.
@@jamesstrain7062 I think they mean HIGH 🤯😮💨💨💨🥴😵💫 security…
As in the engineers who labeled it high security were stoned out of their minds 😂
Didn’t even touch any other pick! “Tough under fire. Timid to the worm”
It's more of a suggestion than a lock.
Dodecanomicon A suggestion that I don't give a shit whether you steal what's inside...?😂😂
LOL
That should be their new slogan! ;)
If you live in the right neighborhood a suggestion is all you need.
Bill You have a presenting style, voice and manner that means I could listen to you talk about any subject. Congratulations on a great channel.
Excellent demonstration on how scarily easy it is to get into these things! 100 MasterLocks would keep someone out for 20 minutes, so don't dismiss them completely.
LOL , nice :]
I really want a meme of something locked up with 100 master locks now.
Hell, it would take you longer to lock them on and off...! You (as the owner) would be tempted to use the mess of keys rather than a pick. Kind of looses the point when the thief isn't AS fast, but way FASTER than you.😂
It would yield better results if you just throw them at any potential thief rather than actually "securing" something with it...
Do it then send me a picture or video. I'll use it for an outro! Over and over every time we look at a Master Lock product.😀
I think you spent more time playing with the tensioner than you did picking the locks.
Every time you have a master lock it just makes me feel so secure about my lawnmower! LOL.
They're useful for keeping honest people honest...that's about it.
Jason Mizuno I'm as honest as they come, but I see a Master more like a 'Welcome In' sign, or a non-verbal invitation...
I've got a #3 locking my garden shed up, kind of as a means to prove breaking and entering. The real security is the connection to my home's burglar alarm system, and roommates that work from home and are a pretty decent shot with a .30-30.
A Masterlock keeps a honest person honest & thats it ! :]
1:53.15 from the time you say "start" until the last hasp is open
At my work they said that we had to use their supplied Master locks on our lockers because they had a duplicate key, I just cut out a lock from paper and threaded it through the hole, same amount of security in my opinion
Cheeky😹🍻🐈🔥
The turn pick put up more of a fight than all the locks combined
My first lockpick guy I ever watched you are the champ
Thank you for teaching me the locks we use at work are garbage and I can decouple our boat without the key if I really need to! Best of luck to your future endeavors!
Poking MasterLocks never gets old.
Where does one go to acquire that many paperweights?
The same place two goes.
I tried what you showed and couldn’t believe how easy it was! I opened all the master locks I could find in the house. They seem pretty useless now :-)

Some funny video about the high security master locks😂
This is great. I had my 8 year old daughter rake a Masterlock 187KA and it took her about 30 seconds to open it. Never again, Masterlock.
It looks like another good day at the Office, Good Job!
Awesome job, Sir! You are my Hero! Keep up the great work.
It will stop toddlers. That's about it. There were instructors at Andropov Institute that taught this kind of stuff. Now do it blind folded lol great pickin' Bill!
That"ll take 3 minutes :]
CC MOGS 3? I'm betting 4 minutes when he knocks one on the floor and spends 2 minutes looking for it...
Just learning about the sport. Just might do locksmithing after retiring. Very entertaining. Tks.
Im sharing this to the facebook group in my area... we have a huge opiate problem and most people rely on these...
Anyone else remember the old MasterLock commercial, where they shoot them. I think it is now time you did that for your audience, Bill. Mind you, that would be a great competition at the next lock picking convention.

Locklab + lock= picked locked! 😎
They're not even embarrassed, Bill.
Good job Bill, had to pick a Master Lock hitch pin today. Tensioned and then rake in and out one time open.... what a joke.
Over here in the UK, we have the equivalent of the Master Lock.
It's the 'blackspur'. It looks identical to the Master; even has the plastic band around the bottom, but which says blackspur on it.

I really like your videos I've learned a lot from them I have two pairs of tools I make my own tension wrenches thank you I've learned a lot
The rakes are just a great pick
I went into Lowe’s the other day as I am a carpenter. Of course I’m always take a stroll through the lock section hoping that maybe they had something worth buying. How did you rake the 140?? Amazing.
You do this far better than McNally does I gotta say.
Sparrows should really rename that pick to "the master".
very nice video Bill ;) it takes longer to grab a lock and put the tools in as to open it ;) hehehe
This is why I don't trust Master locks even to lock up a portapotty.
Well that confirms what I've always have heard,
A Lock, Is Only There To Keep An Honest Man, Honest.
Especially if they are only trusting in a Master Lock #3.
Awesome video as always!
hey Bill
try zipping with a half diamond.. but in , instead of going out. I use a Southord half on these with a bent tensioner and they fall open with one zip! Light to medium tension and... its not even fun anymore_
Good PSA!
I thought you are gonna stand on the table and spray over 10 master locks. It would work as well, actually.
P.S. Good job
I use one on my locker. I was picking before I bought it and I put it on my locker knowing about how bad they were because I knew there was a chance I would see it get cut off.

Oh, so we're speed pickin' now? That's cool. I like to do things fast. Can't say I'm willing to buy 10 Master Locks though :P
What's a good alternative to the little one? I keep one of those on my locker at work. Anything better in that size?

man was missing some MasterLock bashing - now I'm cured
Sparrows WORM earns its place in my 6 pick EDC :]
When I went to secure something, I knew all to well about master lock, weaknesses, so I went for an Abus Titalium 80/TI50
Master locks are maby easy to pick or bypass .. But they can handle bad weather ..
Normal ill have to get a new lock every year for my boat .. They seize up cus salty waters ..
Well have master lock now .. For 3 years still working fine ..
And hey if i forget the key .. Ill just pick it :P -- Only need 2 hairpins
The bottom right is what I learned on. :)
Great idea would be that if you can pick lock in store under lets say 2 min you can take it home for free. That would be pretty convincing to make better security locks :D
Back to basic's. Hail the mighty worm!
A little over a year ago the Lock Picking Lawer spp'd (not raked) 16 MasterLock #3's in just under four minutes. I wonder how fast Bill would have been with just a medium hook. 😉
They call him Dr. Worm!
The great Shaolin of lock picking knows no pins that the unruly Master of " I lock you out, can out power the great Bosnianbill of "Oh I can. And story will continue!
great job, you should have done the last few with a chicken bone or A zip tie... take care.
I still can't seem to get this masterlock open. I need help.
I thought it was great that it took almost as long to unstick your tensioner, as it did to pick some of the locks.
i used so many of these locks
Love it!!!!
Okay, so what is a good lock to buy?
Master Junk has got to hate📎🖇🔓📌📍✂️ you Mr.Bill 😁
I love my sparrows worm
Bill, it take you longer to pick up the lock itself than picking it hahaaa...
Sooooo funny...
PS : If something of value was to get stolen after securing it with one of these locks. Do you think you could sue the company?
those padlocks are horse bill no good but fun maybe keep up the cool work thanks stiglocks..r
One of my learning locks is a "Fortress" lock, looks a lot like that 144.
That was fun
Quick. Everybody should send BB some number 3s!
oeh nice, a new clip!
Im not sure if the master 140has security pins i was trying to buy one and i found tons of people sayin that they didnt contain security pins then i looked and i had a 140 allready and it is the easiest lock i have to open so did master lock downgrade or is i just to easy to open
Joshua Ennis they are just easy to open. There is only one spool in the 140 and it is pretty inconsequential. I find them even easier to open than No. 3s if that is possible, at least for SPP, because the clicks are more apparent.
if you used a bolt and nut.it would take them longer to unscrew it.yet they keep selling them.a lot of years of advertising got the job done.
amazing ,,
Oh wait - the lock itself has "No.3" stamped upon it, but the package says "5". (This is a follow up to my #3 or #5 question down below)
How about doing a Master #7? Those small ones give me fits.
That's why I replaced all of my pad locks with Abloy locks, had Master but not anymore. Master locks just got whipped.
I wouldn't lock up match box cars with master...suppose the down votes I see are probably master lock ceos complaining again
Well when it comes to my vintage matchbox got to be Abloy or better and a minimum of three levels of physical security. Maybe that new Canadian lock. The master lock is only to keep the children from playing with them.
Shoulda known someone would go there lol, I'm not into match box, our was more the statement of they're toy cars worth a dollar or 2 each new
What about a master lock 240?
i have two locks i can pick that quick
i use them on chain just to hold it shut as a bolt would take more time to open
Have you ever received any correspondence from Master Lock or any locks for you to review?
No, never. Oddly, I’d welcome their request...
When's the new Masterlock with "Clap on / off" function? I'm tired of carrying keys.
100 master lock challenge!!!!
You forgot to shake a stick at them first!
Sad thing...you go to the store to get a padlock and all they sell are master locks, what are you supposed to do?
Go to another store........
ariesmars29 - it might be good for master lock sales too - it makes me want to go get one to try.
D Johnson it doesnt matter they are all bad
ask him if he secures his store with MasterLocks

I believe it took you longer to get your tools in and out than it did to open the locks..
could you do a master 575?
What is a good lock
Check out Abloy, Medeco or Mul-t-lock. You won't be disappointed in any of those.
MasterUnLock :-)
Ironic that the first locks I practiced picking are called Master locks.
So he did an average of 11.6 seconds per lock.
Thanks!
