My neighbor was in college and worked as a parking valet in Beverly Hills. Ernest Borgnine was a regular patron of the restaurant my neighbor parked cars. He said Ernest Borgnine always encouraged him to finish school and was a great tipper. When My friend told him he was graduating a couple years later. Ernest Borgnine gave him $200.00 dollars before he went into his car and whispered "I'm proud of you." The day my neighbor found out Ernest Borgnine died, his wife told me he cried. Class act Ernie.

I met Mr Borgnine at a gas station in Victorville CA back in the 90's, he was very nice and very down to earth. I asked him where he was headed and he said "Las Vegas for the weekend". No "Star Trip" with him, just a good man who was more interested in me and who was kind and treated me with respect. R.I.P. Mr B.

Dam, in 1963 I was TAD in Fallon NV waiting to go to TI in San Francisco to Radarman School. I remember going to the EM Club and watching McHale's Navy as it was new and we had no TV's in the dorms. The show had just started and was a big hit with the men in the Navy. It would have been fun to met this wonderful man before he passed away.

As a little boy, I always looked up to Ernest Borgnine. The first movie/play I saw him in was the Glass Menagerie. I can't explain it, but I was hooked on his presence. After that as I grew older, anything that he was featured in, I had to watch intently. Watched it with respect for Mr Borgnine as an actor. The movie "Marty" was the other memorable film he starred in. He was the butcher in the Bronx. He had my full respect as a person, and my full attention whenever I saw him in a movie, or a TV interview, like on Johnny Carson. I cant say enough about Ernest Borgnine. THUMBS UP!!!

@@kikayei yes, he was part of a gang of outlaws that included Warren Oates, William Holden and 2 other actors who I can't recall. It takes place in Revolutionary ere Mexico, around 1916 and the gang hijacks a US Army train loaded with weapons and they sell them to the Mexicans. It's also about how the Wild West is over and these guys were part of that era. It's a good movie but very violent, directed by Sam Peckinpah

Ernest Borgnine spent 6 years in the Navy, and was honorably discharged. As soon as Pearl Harbor was attacked, Mr. Borgnine voluntarily re-enlisted. He served on the USS Lamberton and USS Sylph. Ernest didn't need the draft to understand his duty, his Italian immigrant parents instilled in him those values.
Salute to Ernest Borgnine (Borgnino) for his service and to a time when Hollywood was full of patriots.

I remember one time when he was asked about his being in the movie Willard. He said he took the job for the quick buck and when offered a percentage of the film if he took a lower base salary he declined because he said, "Who's going to watch a movie about a rat?" Movie turned out to be a huge hit and he would have made a ton more money if he had chosen the percentage.

Can remember when he was on TV program highway to heaven you think that was in 80"s and to look back on when he done the movie Marty in 50"s that tells you how good he was as actor. And these videos of him are nice to see he was same decent person off screen and a regular person lot of these so called actors and celebrities of today could learn a lot from seeing a true gentleman wished could have met him when he was doing this what an honor it would have been .
