I'm a thrower at my local community college. My events are shot, disc, and hammer. Although I'm probably not your usual audience (petite girl over here), I really enjoy watching your videos and learning about other throwing events. Keep up the great work, Matt :)
I was throwing as a master's thrower in the 90's and early 2000's. You're right, there's not much footage out there to show for training. My training came from watching other throwers at the games, throwing as much as possible, and reading Milo magazine articles, especially the ones written by Jim McGoldrick back in the 90's! Thanks for his video! Slainte!
I randomly found your videos while going through crossfit videos and I really enjoy them. I have no highland games interest, but find myself watching any video you put out and going back through your catalog of videos as well. Thanks for making these.
One of the things I have to change is to use the right hand more. I've played golf since I was a kid, and that uses the left arm and the right is supposed to be 'quiet'. Thanks Drifta
Thanks for these vids Matt. Going through my videos from the games last summer, I'm already seeing a lot of things I can fix. Hopefully I'll beat some marks this year :)
Excellent vid, Matt! That's some explosive power. However, I challenge you to edit the video at 6:18 with some Michael Bay type explosion when it looks like the hammer drops directly on the passing vehicle. Every time you're throwing in this field and a car passes, I imagine what the person behind the wheel is thinking or how they're reacting. Great stuff on the commentary and the PIP is a nice touch to the coaching aspect. I don't throw. I'll likely never throw, but you make it look hella fun. Thanks for all the effort.
This helps. Thanks for taking the time. Most of the throwers in Vegas are not orbiting to the right on their turns. So I have been struggling a bit to find the cues you discuss in this video.
I think it's important to notice on that last throw which looked like the best one, you didn't just "Release" the hammer, there was an audible "snap!" as it exited the orbit and entered the upper atmosphere.
Hey Matt, just got my hard copy of throwing lab today. In a word AWESOME. Your videos and books are hands down the best and most available resource for a beginning highland gamer like myself. Thank you for your awesome and inspiring content. I have a few questions I'd love to ask . any tips or tricks on conditioning the grip my practice hammer? It's a PVC handle with 5#plates on the end. I have some pine tar, and rasped some " texture " into the last foot or so, but it seemed most of the tar wound up on my hands and not the handle. am I missing something? secondly, can you do a video that includes your "line drills" for WFD? you mentioned them, and "one turns" to help with path of travel and balance while delivering. I'd love to see them in action so I can make sure I'm doing the same thing. currently anything more than a one turn is a crap throw for me, so clearly my fundamentals are in need of drilling. ( super new at this, fast learner, but no track n field in the resume) also, just wanted to say, love the vlog, all of it, but my ears definitely perk up a little extra when its about the games and the events in your training regimen, your strength and mobility content is great, but don't hold back on games content, its second to none and plenty of your audience wants to be better throwers. if you're ever in Nashville give us a holler, we'll show you n the missus a good time. -B
Matthew I'm loving your content. What shoes would you recommend for Highland? I've been using a Crossfit Lite shoe, thinking about moving to a cleet, but what would you recommend.?
I want to improve significantly on hammer this season. My games PR is a paltry 76'1." a friend and I were debating orbits. He was arguing to keep the wrists locked throughout the throw to get a longer orbit, while I was arguing for rolling the wrists and getting back to catch quicker. Upon looking at your videos and others, it looks to me like you roll your wrists on your first two winds to catch quicker and get around your head, while on your third wind you extend your hips, drop the head back, and lock your wrists to extend the final orbit. Does that sound right?
I'm living up in Minnesota right now and we still have a lot of snow and ice on the ground. Where would you suggest I try and throw? I didn't throw in High school or anything like that so I don't know of any indoor places.
What does Matt mean by catch with the left hand? During part of the rotation is the left arm following the handle but not actually contributing to the rotational force?
Is your hammer made of PVC pipe and concrete stone at the end? Im trying to figure out ways to make these implements as ill probably have the same issue as you do with being a solo training sessions
Hey Matt, so it looks like your feet are parallel for your warm ups but that you stagger your release side foot (your left) rearward for your actual throws. Is this to help you with your release? Thanks!
no offense to other throwing videos but there kind of unwatchable & confusing. granted I don't have any athletic background but your video was informative, simple & entertaining. oh & thought that SUV was done for. nice throwing.

I still watch these a week out from every game, got one next weekend, first A game!
Matt, this really helps me out. I suck at hammer, so I appreciate the breakdown. Thanks, man!
Thanks Matt! Awesome Video and Very Helpful!

Very cool
Thanks for the blade tips!
I love these training videos Matt. I wont be able to do any throwing till this summer so your videos are getting me through till then.
This looks super fun.
Excellent instructional video!
I miss these videos
Me too
Exactly what I needed for hammer. Really starting to understand the throw this season. Thanks again for putting this stuff out.
This was really interesting to see! Keep it up! You have unique content versus all the other things that similar on UA-cam.
Thanks for these vids Matt. Going through my videos from the games last summer, I'm already seeing a lot of things I can fix. Hopefully I'll beat some marks this year :)

Nice breakdown.... ty Matt..
Camera quality looks terrific, especially the opening.

Holy shit you throw that thing far! Good stuff man.
Thank you!

+Brendan Bowe either use more or try some 3m spray
Thanks. I'm getting the hang of it. Probably gonna switch to the 3m spray tho, seems easier, faster, more consistent and cheaper.
+cocvhecv 10-4. definitely will keep that in mind.
It was pretty neat to see the break down, as I'm not a thrower at all.
Matthew I'm loving your content.

What dates are you competing in the games in Scotland?

Serious question how do you get your blades through TSA
Anyone else just wanne go outside and throw shit as far as possible after watching this?

How often are you actually throwing in the off season? Some of the highland guys i met last year said that they don't actually throw that often?
Is your hammer made of PVC pipe and concrete stone at the end? Im trying to figure out ways to make these implements as ill probably have the same issue as you do with being a solo training sessions

Is it just me or does anyone else watch these for the one day he takes out a car? If I was that SUV driver I would be freaking out haha!
+Reveries I cringe every time he throws and there is car passing by on the road.
Sev short years ago.
Been a whole lifetime
"...and my hips are starting to get a lot more aggressive." Aggressive Hips would be a great band name.
no offense to other throwing videos but there kind of unwatchable & confusing. granted I don't have any athletic background but your video was informative, simple & entertaining. oh & thought that SUV was done for. nice throwing.
jose torres I bet the driver of that Suv thought so too
Question..Have You ever Hit The Road Behind You?
Nah it’s a long way
