    The fact is that kids now don't watch television like generations before them. Now they have streaming and especially UA-cam. With UA-cam they can watch whatever they like to their specific tastes rather than what a tv channel would put on.

    Disney really fell off after the rebrand in 2014. They fell to the pits of hell once Ravens Home got rid of some of their main cast members. It amazes me how Raven Symoné is still carrying The Disney Channel on her back and has been doing it for 21 years (since 2003)

    • @thomasharris3040
      @thomasharris3040 7 місяців тому +8

      I hear a rumor that Raven's Home will not return next season. It seems to confirm my own theory that once an established, successful Disney show changes its story locale, it's basically over.
      It happened with Bizaardvark, it happened with Liv and Maddie, and now, it's recently happened with Bunk'd, though it did take--what?--two seasons before that beast finally breathed its last?!

    • @TheRomaniBanks
      @TheRomaniBanks 7 місяців тому +7

      @@thomasharris3040 They still haven’t renewed Raven’s Home because of the writers strike but if Disney did decide to pull the plug it wouldn’t be good for the network because not only are all scripted shows with Black leads or black families getting cancelled but Ravens home is the only live action show on the channel that is currently carrying the network if we’re being fr. I did notice the story location curse but it always made sense for Ravens home to eventually go back to San Francisco because that’s where the original That’s So Raven took place. Disney’s problem is really axing their original main cast members that start these shows out and switch them out with new people. No one to walk this earth can tell me that Bunk’d shouldn’t have ended along with the Jessie cast.

      @@TheRomaniBanks I agree with you for the most part about Bunk'd ending after the Jessie cast left, but the writers shifted the focus on Miranda May as the lead, and I think that was probably a good thing, for about two years. Now that the show is barely living, and it's basically Ms. May carrying the entire show (she's even an executive producer now), she's become too good for that series, and I would love to see her in a totally new role, not necessarily Disney. She's funny, she's talented, and that show is holding her back. Just my opinion.

    When I think of the golden era of Disney Channel from 2000-2012, the first ones that come to mind are Shia LaBeouf (before he went nuts), Hilary Duff, Raven-Symonè, Cole & Dylan Sprouse, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato & the Jonas Brothers, to name a few. They were not only the faces of the channel, but they really helped change the game. Disney just don't make superstars like them anymore, & I consider Zendaya, Dove Cameron, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo & Jenna Ortega as the last of the Disney generation to hit big. That era will never be duplicated in my humble opinion. It will always & forever hold a special place in my heart. What a time to be alive. I don't think the quality of the shows are the issue. I'm sorry to say, but a lot of the shows and movies that we grew up with in the 2000s were a bit cringy too, no better than the shows and movies from today. I honestly don't think that Zombies and Teen Beach Movie aren't any worse than Camp Rock and High School Musical were. We just didn't realize how dumb some of the DCOM movies from our time were as children, and by the time we grew up and looked back at them again, we already had the nostalgia to cloud our judgement. To me, most DCOM movies from the mid-2010s to now aren't THAT bad (except for Descendants, but even so, I can understand the appeal). From a business standpoint, Disney Channel definitely peaked in the mid to late 2000s, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the quality of the shows and movies from this time were better.
    I definitely agree that streaming services and social media are both more to blame. More variety of content means that kids are more spread out when it comes to what sort of things they are interested in. When I was growing up, if I wanted to watch something for kids, the main things I turned to were Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and PBS Kids. Technically, we had UA-cam, but there wasn't as much content for kids on UA-cam in the late 2000s as there are today. Netflix wasn't a streaming company yet, there was no UA-cam Kids, and Hulu didn't even exist.
    Another factor to consider is that because of streaming services and social media, less and less families find it necessary to pay for cable. Why pay the extra money for that when you already have the internet to give you access to any sort of content you want, at any time? Not to mention, if you're already paying a subscription to Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, etc., that money piles up. So it's not that kids don't want to watch channels on cable, but more that they literally can't, because their parents no longer pay for it.
    I have younger siblings, and they don't really mind watching channels. It's just that they have more variety of sources to find shows, so they'll watch shows on Disney+, Netflix, UA-cam, or Hulu. Unfortunately, Disney+ isn't very good at advertising their DCOM shows and movies, and I think it's because there's too much content on it, that they're too busy putting their Marvel, Pixar, live action remakes, and Star Wars movies to put any attention on their Disney Channel stuff. I don't know if the quality is going down, but rather that they're too much content. Stuff for tweens is being made, but it's buried under the Marvel Cinematic Universe, live action remakes, reboots, Star Wars, Disney Junior shows, etc.

      Wow thanks for this comment!! I 100% agree with your points.
      As someone who grew up in the 00’s I enjoyed majority of what was put out but also thought there was some pretty bad DCOMS & shows during that era as well. There are some DCOMS & Shows that have held up pretty well from that time.
      I think the 2010’s had some good shows & DCOMS as well as crappy ones. I feel like people just say that their era was better and are quick to say the new stuff is bad without giving it a chance.
      Yes Disney Plus has waaaay too much content & they don’t really advertise the tween shows from Disney channel at all compared to the Marvel, Star Wars & Pixar choices.

These shows were cancelled because of Hannah Montana, Justin Bieber, Wizards of Waverly Place, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Selena Gomez, High School Musical, The Jonas Brothers, Vanessa Hudgens, Jessie, Dog with a Blog, Girl Meets World, Sabrina Carpenter, and Bunk’d replaced Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh.

    I think the reason why Disney Channel is still watched by people of older generations its because of the cartoons.
    The Live-Action shows and DCOMs had massive decline of quality during the last 10 to 15 years, same thing that happens to their rival Nickelodeon. But while the Viacom owned channel is basically destroying their legacy and almost every single new show or movie had failed miserably, both Live-Action & cartoons, in the recent years Disney Channel has a lot of animated shows with good quality that put them on the map of many people, specially now that rivals cartoons channels like Nick or CN have so little to no original animated content.
    This success happen thanks to the massive popularity of Gravity Falls, but it can be also attributed to the catalog of older shows that made the channel stand out towards the others competitors, examples could be like Kim Possible, The Proud Family, American Dragon: Jake Long, Recess, the original Ducktales, the Chip & Dale series and some of their shows derivated of popular movies from the company like the Lilo & Stitch series or The Emperor's New School. That level of constant quality endures to this day thanks to shows like The Owl House, Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, The Ghost & Molly Mcgee, Big City Greens, Amphibia and some of their middle-to-late 2010s stuff like Star Vs The Forces Of Evil, the Rapunzel Tangled's Adventure series or the Ducktales reboot.
    Also, many canceled or forgotten shows like Dave The Barbarian, Brandy & Mr. Whiskers, Fish Hooks, The Buzz On Maggie, The Replacements, Wander Over Yonder, etc, have become cult classic over the years.
    A huge mention to all of the Disney XD cartoons like Kick Buttowski, Penn Zero, Randy Cunningham & Star Wars Rebels because even if they are from a sister channel, many considers them to be equal to their Disney Channel counterparts, because they shape the way Disney TV Animation is today often regarded as one of the best tv cartoons studios.
    Obviously, there's the whole The Owl House disaster of Disney fucking up one of their biggest shows just because its unapologetic queer (same thing that happens to the Nimona Movie, good stuff BTW check it out), but with the current corpo culture in Hollywood, the soulless Live-Action remakes of the most beloved Disney movies and anti-LGBT rhetoric things happens right now, it was obvious that some shit like that was going to happen.
    Still, Disney Channel is still talked about up to this day not only because of their long catalogue of classic shows and movies but also because of the current state of their animation department, the same medium which in the past had bring Disney as a whole to being one of the biggest media & entertainment companies in the world since the last 100 years.
    PD: you should do a video about the Disney Channel Games, they were such a important part of 2000s pop culture.

    If we’re being honest with ourselves, Disney Channel died in 2012. It was 2012 that Disney Channel started to shift its programming towards a very young demographic rather than the young tweens (and even older teens) who their shows were once well received by. But Disney began to lose its steam in 2010. Remember, 90’s and early 2000’s kids were coming off the back of iconic shows like Lizzie McGuire, That’s So Raven, Phil of the Future, Hannah Montana, Suite Life, Wizards of Waverly Place…only for disney to then transition with Shake it Up, Jessie, Ant Farm, Austin & Ally etc;
    This was an irrefutable dip in quality from the shows that superseded them, and that showed in their ratings. A matter of fact, between 2010-2013, Nickelodeon was actually doing better in ratings than Disney Channel. Because, while Disney was giving us lukewarm shows like Ant Farm & Shake it Up, Nickelodeon was giving us iconic shows like Big Time Rush and Victorious. While Victorious and Big Time Rush were seeing live viewership as high as 7M & 8M on their episodes, disney was trailing behind. The only show to match nicks ratings after 2010 was Good Luck Charlie. But even Good Luck Charlie, which was Disney’s biggest new program during its run, did not receive the high viewership of shows like Wizards of Waverly Place or even Victorious.
    I regard Good Luck Charlie and Victorious as the last great shows from both networks.

    For reference I'm currently 34 years old.
    I remember freaking out when my father and stepmother decided to finally pay for Disney channel... However because it was a paid channel My dad and stepmother were not willing to pay for it on any other household TV besides the living room.
    At the time... Disney channel was airing a show originally aired in Canada called ready or not? The show came on I believe weekdays at 4:00 p.m. back then... I would try my hardest to grab the TV before my father arrived home so that I could watch. Then there were times where.. Even if I thought I'd beat him to it... You'd come home and change the channel. (Always to some boring history channel show by the way.)
    Literally I would verbally battle with him and bargain and do whatever I could to get him to let me watch ready or not.😂 Wonder if I would think it was super cheesy today?
    Now I just like to say in general... Zoog Disney was EVERYTHING! 💯!
    You mentioned a few OG Disney channel original movies... And let me just say... I was highly disappointed when they fell off... And sad as I watched the movies decline in quality. Right along with the TV shows.
    I loved under wraps! Mom's got a date with a vampire. Got to kick it up. As you mentioned true confessions was also great. Actually... I could go on and on about Disney channel original movies from that particular time.
    #Ripzoogdisney😢

      Thanks for the comment. Yes I agree the DCOMS of the early years were so special. As much as I loved high school musical the movies definitely changed afterwards.
      Some other good DCOMS that I love were hounded, the luck of the Irish, get a clue, ring of endless light and a few others that are underrated

    Oh, this got super long and is basically a half finished script for a video I was thinking about making for the past year or two, but making videos isn't really my thing anyway, so I guess here goes for anyone interested in my experience with DC in Sweden.
    Its interesting to see where it started for someone who wasn't around back then and also isn't from the US. Disney Channel started in Sweden in 2004 if I remember correctly, and my parents got it for me and my sister either in late 2004 or early 2005, when I would have been 7 and my sister 1. Some of the cartoons, like DuckTales and Winnie the Poh had been on the Public Service channels's kids hour before, which was the only channels we could access before my parents got a satellite dish, and it wasn't even Disney that was the main selling point that made me ask for more channels, it was Digimon, that I aired on weekend mornings on Swedish Channel 3, which I discovered while we were on vacation someplace that had that channel. When my parents upgraded we got not only channel 3, but also Disney Channel (and eventually Toon Disney and Playhouse Disney when they were launched), Cartoon Network and Jetix (which also showed both Digimon and Pokémon to my great joy). Basically everything but Nickelodeon, which I have never watched.
    When I first started watching Disney channel I remember it was mostly cartoon content. Many shows that were already airing in the US, or sometimes even finished, like Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers, Tail Spin, Gummi Bears, Kim Possible, Recess, DarkWing Duck and the Lilo and Stitch show was airing in those early days, and a fair amount of animated B movies that I don't know if Disney was even involved in or if they were just cheap fillers, like an animated Zorro movie, 20.000 leagues under the sea, Time Kid and some others. I can't remember any of the live action shows that many Americans age 25-30 talk about, like Lizzie McGuire, Raven, Boy Meets World (I know it was ABC, but Disney owned, and you said in the video they did reruns on DC) and whatever else they are called. Most probably never made it to Swedish DC, or they were shown subbed with original English audio between 8 pm and 10 pm, when the channel would shut off. At age 7 my bedtime was 8, so I almost never stayed up to watch them, and even though I could read, and follow subtitles for the most part, I wasn't very interested in watching those shows anyway. I do remember Phill from the future, because that was often the first one to come on after the dubbed programing ended, so I've watched the intro a fair amount of times without ever having watched the show.
    The only 2 live action shows I can remember watching as a kid was Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and to my knowledge they didn't even dub the first season of Zack and Cody, they just test ran the show subbed to see if it would be worth the extra investment, and then they dubbed season 2 and onwards, but never went back to those first episodes. As for all those live action DCOMs the very first I remember is High School Musical. It's possible they showed some of the others as the movie of the week and I just missed it. Even if I were allowed up a bit later on Fridays, I wasn't allowed up until the end of a movie that started at 8, so if anything was interesting we would record it and watch it the next day. I remember watching a couple of Muppet movies and the first Pirates of the Caribbean this way, but not any DCOMs. By the time HSM came out I was old enough to stay up and watch it, and also there were tons of marketing for it, and they showed it 3 times the first weekend, first dubbed on Friday, then subbed on Saturday, and then dubbed again (possibly with sing along, can't remember) on Sunday again, and I watched it all three times, and that is also the last DCOM I remember watching until I checked some out on Disney+ 10+ years later.
    I'm not sure exactly when I stopped watching DC, and shows often came with quite the delay to Sweden, so it's no good looking at start and stop dates for shows, but I know for a fact I never saw The Suite Life on Deck or Wizards of Waverly Place until several years after leaving the channel, and it was a few years between that and my sister being interested enough to seek out the channel for her self, so I'm not sure what happened and when, but by the time she started watching Toon Disney didn't exist, Jetix had been bought by Disney and become Disney XD and Playhouse Disney was now Disney Junior, and Junior was basically the only channel that showed cartoons. DC had Phinneas and Ferb and eventually Gravity Falls, but nothing else cartoon I can remember. And the programming just repeated like 3 times per day. They had 4 or 5 hours of shows they played, and then they started from square one again and played the same 4-5 hours again in the afternoon, and then again in the evening, and I mean the same episodes as earlier in the day, not just the same shows. I found a few shows that I watched a bit. I watched a handful of episodes of Good luck Charlie, and I watched all of Suite Life on Deck and most if not all of Wizards and eventually caught on to Girl Meets World and went back and found all of Boy Meets World as well online (before there were any Disney+), and when Disney+ came along I also watched all of Liv and Maddie, but over all most shows didn't speak to me, and my sister wasn't very interested for very long either, so we quit our DC deal even before Disney+ launched.
    I think the Swedish Disney Channel has been discontinued by now. Last I checked, about a year after the launch of Disney+ in Sweden, our TV provider was charging about 3 times the cost of Disney+ for all 3 Disney Channels, and seeing as most Swedish households have a good enough internet connection to stream content, many even getting their regular TV though the internet rather than traditional antennas or satellite dishes or TV cables, it makes sense most people would turn to Disney+ instead. I think it's a bit sad that kids these days don't get the same TV experience I got as a kid, getting sucked into shows through the trailers, getting hyped for weeks about the new show or the next new movie of the week, having to catch the programs as they aired, and maybe discover something amazing in-between your favorite shows, or when you were home sick and too tired to do anything but watch TV, and that you had to do something else if nothing good was on, but also seeing the state DC was in last time I tuned in, I wouldn't want them to have that either.

      Hey thanks for the comment I really appreciate it.
      You made some good points. Here in the US they did play the newest DCOM 3 times during its premiere week so HSM for example premiered on a Friday night, then played Saturday and Sunday night of that same weekend.
      If you're interested I'd suggest watching some of the older shows like Raven. Recess, Kim Possible and Proud family just for fun. You won't be disappointed.

    I think Disney actually has an ace up its sleeve to salvage interest in both the channel and Disney+; its animated series. Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls are frequently seen in people’s top 10 favorite Disney shows (and that’s saying a lot given that most people don’t think of animated series when considering that). After that, Wonder Over Yonder was cute. But the real heavy hitters were Star Vs The Forces Of Evil, Amphibia, and The Owl House. Unfortunately, weak direction diluted the former and a premature cancellation ruined the latter. If Disney would invest more into these types of properties (and not cancel them once they start representing the LGBTQ+…), that could really help them since animated works are really popular these days.

    Can you make a youtube video "The History of Disney Channel 1983-1996"
    To phillinsogood as you know I grew up with the Disney Channel 1983-1996 which had a huge impact in my life, I liked that it had the most amazing soundtrack music scores including theme songs for Dateline Disney, Discover Magazine, Disney Nighttime, Disney Sunday Night songs. I remember it playing classic Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Silly Symphony cartoon shorts and classic Disney movies like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella, Fantasia, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, The Sword in the Stone, Jungle Book 1967, Robin Hood 1973 even before we as a family started to own them on VHS and DVD. I also remember live action Disney Channel movies like Not Quite Human, Dumbo Circus, Welcome to Pooh Corner, Alice Adventures in Wonderland, Heidi 1993, Swiss Family Robinson 1960s remake, The Parent Trap 1961 movie, Pollyanna, Freaky Friday 1977 and 1995 remake, Escape to Witch Mountain 1975, The Shaggy Dog, The Absent Minded Professor, Treasure Island 1950, Captain Nemo, Zorro, Mickey Mouse Club and many more older 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s live action movies. I also remember the Disney Channel vintage cartoons like The Wuzzles, Gummi Bears, Ducktales 1980s, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Talespin, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troop. During that time The Little Mermaid 1989, The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast 1991, Aladdin 1992, The Lion King 1994 was very popular as 2D animation used to be the trend before CGI overshadowed 2D animation by Toy Story 1 and Reboot TV series. I enjoyed the grown up shows like the rock concerts of Kenny Loggins, American Teacher Awards, Disneyland documentaries.
    Then the wonderful Disney Channel 1983-1996 came to a sudden end in 1997, they started airing commercials which I didn't like. Gone was the amazing music score of Disney Channel and the Mickey Mouse Bumpers though they had fun rock themes. Also the old school Disney shows were on Vault Disney before it got discontinued in 2002. Then I lost interest in Disney Channel because the shows were getting too modern for my tastes and I started being more interested in Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter instead.
    I couldn't watch Hannah Montana TV show on Disney Plus because I didn't like the awful acting but liked the songs but I liked Phil of the Future. I did like Halloweentown, High School Musical and many more Disney Channel movies. The Proud Family had questionable content like the exposed babies bottoms and animal cruelty depictions or outdated bullying jokes and stereotypes. I did like Kim Possible TV show. Also the 1998 movie "You Lucky Dog" was awful using the same plot as The Aristocats, the Even Stevens Movie was very disrespectful to Native Islanders which I didn't like as much, I did like the Hannah Montana movie, I liked Camp Rock and Teen Beach Movie which I laughed.
    Anyways Disney Channel is going to shutdown in the future since I no longer watch it. I liked the Percy Jackson TV show and I'm hoping for an Artemis Fowl TV series. May Disney Channel 1983-2024 rest in peace since Disney Plus is the best way to watch classic Disney shows.
