- Matt joins Road & Track's budget endurance racing team with such talented drivers and journalists Mark and Jack Baruth, Jack's racer wife 'Danger Girl,' Sam Smith, Travis Okulski, and Christian 'Mental' Ward. This video is from an 8-hour race at Mid-Ohio, October 22nd, 2016. The car is a 2007 Mazda MX5 Cup, and this is my first ever time both in the car and at this track. We had a strong race but slow pit stops and a quick mechanical repair meant a finish in 23rd place of 45 cars.
This video comes courtesy of trackside live streaming service RaceCast.me! If you want to get live in-car video of your own races, check out:

I love to have a different video than one takes on fridays, its very nice.
Keep em coming Matt.
Hey Matt, great video! I was driving the older blue Miata who you were racing during most of this stint! I passed you on your out lap at 2:20 in this video, then you passed me in a great 3 wide move at 37:36 in this video! I have my onboard videos on my channel, and the same moves can be seen at 10:20 in my Saturday part 2 video and the 3 wide pass is at 11:10 in Saturday part 4. We continued to be close on track for the rest of the stint, really enjoyed racing with you on track and hope to do so again in the future!! Cheers
Peter dS great racing with you as well! Hope to do it again at road Atlanta in February!
Wow Matt, that was nice driving immediately after 37:30.
Thanks for sharing your adventure.
No crazy movie effects, no filters, no bs. Perfect.
P.S. what's the purpose of the net on the right? Besides getting in way of your hand?
MyRealName supposedly keeps you safer
keep you arm from flying in case of roll over
Yes , great to see the clean & uncut .... but , shame the guys mounting the camera gear did not do something about the wind noise on the mic .........
@@alexsiul1142 Possibly extreme weight saving to add to that
This would be a cool 360 degree video
The RaceCast guys are great - We used them for our LeMons streaming. -JG
When you are trying to go to sleep cause you have work in the morning but these new car vids keep getting posted....
Right off the bat...I love the "in the cockpit" view. Great!!
The sound of the Porsche passing him around 15 min on the back straight was incredible
Beautiful location and track. Stunning compared to our dirt brown, tumble weeds, dust covered tracks here in southern california... drought does not help ;^( Great Job Matt! Enjoyed watching you become more confident and faster with each lap. 1 hour:15 min at the wheel takes serious concentration mentally and physically. Did not know you had it in ya, hahaha... great job, thanks for posting!
Great video as always Matt!
Love the MX5 videos!
This is a nice treat. Thanks!
that net tether seems kinda in the way of the shifter ..rules is rules
funshootin1 kinda? lol. itss hella in the way, what does it even do on that side?
ROBtimesTEN keeps you in that area when you crash. it's for containment just like the one on the window.
Bryan Bulmer window makes full sense but not the middle as much to me, but if they help then cool
Completely useless, apart from being in the way. What, the seatbelt harness is gonna break, or the seat will come off? Come on....
Toretobs Yes, if the seat comes undone, or the belts snap, you are screwed. But, if everything works the way it is supposed to, that net will help keeps your arms inside the cockpit. Very important with an open top racer.
Anyone else bothered by that unclipped zip tie?
I only watch the whole video to see if he ever grabbed it while going for a gear change.
Cool. I just read this week how Danger Girl got that name. Gotta love it all. It's racing.
Really good job Matt! Mid-Ohio is a beautiful track, and the MX-5's a fun car to drive on it. You really seemed to settle into it after a few rough laps. Good job!
Go Matt!!! Go!!!! You were awesome out there.
Great driving Matt!
That ballsy pass at 4:32!
That looks like such a great time! Good for you. I'd love to get a chance to do this some day.
That's some great driving there, Matt. Nice to see you in action, and great footage The pass at around 7:00 had me saying YEAH pretty loud. Need to search eBay for racing parts for my track build after seeing this, so prob won't watch the whole thing, but it makes a nice soundtrack. Cheers!
REP OHIO!!! I wish I could've saw ya there this year Matt. I live like 30 minutes away from Mid-Ohio. It's a fun track, especially the downhill curve at the end of the longest straight...I've seen so many wrecks there.
Very cool man. So glad you did this break from the norm. Here's to hoping more of this comes in the future. Killed my battery watching the whole thing. But worth it!
lines look real good.. I was impressed.. Only thing Id do differently is stay in 4th gear, wait till the keyhole to downshift into 3rd. Id also stay in 3rd through T8 and T9... Just let it tap the limiter..
Bell Motorsports yeah I learned that stuff by the end of the session, you probably saw me changing shift points a bunch during the seasion trying to figure that out
My dad used to race his 69 javelin up there back in the 70's. What a cool video!
This is very cool. Dunno how I missed it. I enjoy this stuff for sure, Matt
Well done Farah! I know you had a grin on your face the whole time!
I hope we can get a detailed rundown of what has been done to this MX-5! Cool car.
I understand the breakdown Matt. Just thinking 2 or 3 drivers doing more wheel time = a better result. I am involved with the Bathurst 12Hr and go with 3 drivers.
Any way.....like your stuff and appreciate your posts. Just not sure why 6 drivers needed for an 8hr race!
More gear on n/a, RWD, light weight, H pattern is always appreciated.
So many eargasms!!! I cant take it!!! Actually... more please
Be cool if there was live data on the video. How'd your team do? What was your best lap time?
robm425 my best lap was 1:48.1 not exactly setting the world on fire but I got it done. We finished 23rd on the first day and had to retire out of first place in class onnsecond day
TheSmokingTire
100% better than I could do and definitely interesting to watch as time went on and you got the feel for the track you really picked up the pace. Hopefully we see your next race at Road Atlanta!
audio gets out of sync in the last quarter
Loki yeah the whole thing is one clip so I couldn't really change it
TheSmokingTire
Its fine, enjoyed watching it was just letting you know if you didn't notice it.
:O This could have been an 8 hour video!
I really like mid-Ohio. Glad you got to enjoy it too!
Started digging the vid once you found your groove and really liked the way the car rotated nicely.
Would like to see more of your racing stuff; just trying to imagine how you'd work it into your channel's flow. I guess one thing I'd be interested in knowing would be where you, personally, would like to improve your racing skills - maybe that would make a nice arc: Matt Ups His Game.
Wish there were closed captions... LOL
great job as always
The cameras should have been on the outside of the car; at least 1 front, 1 rear, low to the ground.
Darien Long GRSE! Rule 1: never put cameras on the outside of a race car. If they fly off you're fucked.
TheSmokingTire Don't crash MAT; I do understand.
nice take on the mustang!
Omg, the wind noise is killing my ears.
I thought I saw you walking around the paddock... Didn't recognize you for sure without your anti-glare sunglasses haha. Now I wish I would have said something! We were there in the blue Honda Prelude. Had a diff carrier bearing go out on Saturday but swapped the transmission that afternoon and ran all day Sunday. I believe we were in the same class as your team. We might try to make Road Atlanta in February so now I'll keep an eye out!
well this will give me something to watch
Been to mid-Ohio once, a friend of mine races in IndyLights, its a fun track!
glad to see you didn't crash. i keep up with the podcasts so i was thinking about you lol
2:19 I almost pooped myself.
Thanks beardo!
Beard looks good, keep it!
Are there plans for using Zack's m3 for a one take?
na they'll never do it
Best sounding NA 4 pot this side of an Integra Type R!
Andrew Elias The MZR engine did always sound good with the Cup cars. I don't know if the new Skyactiv engine sounds as nice.
I am experiencing audio video synchronization issues with this video, many times the shift happens in the video and engine sound is substantially behind.
Matt, how are the flat bottomed steering wheels on street cars? The Miata could seriously benefit from more leg clearance.
Oh my word that net is ridiculous... I would hate it. Props for putting up with that thing. I take it its necessary because of the car being a convertible?
Some race metrics would be nice. If you do this again, could you get lap times posted? It would be really interesting to see how your times improve as you begin to drive better and get a feel for the car and track.
It does sounds like a vacuum cleaner, just like in iRacing!
You seem quicker toward the end like you hitting more of your marks. We had no ETs but it looked good. I do miss that so much. Log all the time you can man while you can. Now that I have the time I am too worn out and sick.
Matt, did you get any one takes filmed while in town? TC Kline racing has great selection down in Columbus. Not sure if they were up there this weekend since I didn't get to make it, but hope you enjoyed the track.
Andrew Foster no I was just racing
You know what Matt needs, HIS HARRY'S RAZORS
Decent lines Matt!
Morning, Matt!
Beautiful, I have a 92 Na with a 1.8 swap, enjoy the fam life.
Matt - Great footage brotha! I have a 07 MX-5 too. Unrelated, but what shift knob or company would you highly recommend for quality? Preferable something heavy.
Jonathan Singh I honestly have no idea, I've never proactively gone out looking for a shift knob
I ended up going with a company called "Raceseng".
Matt - by any chance do you know what sway bars were used in this MX-5?
Cool ! Matt, do you do any limerock events ?
What was your opinion of Mid-Ohio? I loved my time on it, but I have yet to experience any other track.
Colin Blount it's great. Amazing track. Beautifully old school. God help you if you have to race there in the wet
Yes, the hills and plentiful off camber would be quite slippy if not handled correctly
awwwwwww matt idk if you were letting the faster cars by but you took a few corners wide, im not hating lol but my goodness that looks like a blast
Omar they were in higher classes I wasn't racing them. Easier to just let them by and focus on consistent laps to stay st the top of my own clas
17:30 is a sick pass too
Nicely done Matt! That looks like a ton of fun. Did they take the top off so you would fit better or do they usually run top off? I noticed some of the Miatas were still sporting the hard top.
Brian Rowland it varies from car to car. This one always had no top
Ah. Being rather tall myself and having owned convertibles, driving at speed with no top can be pretty annoying. The wind always seems to catch me right in the forehead. A helmet helps, but I still felt like I was getting shaken from the neck up. I can't imagine doing that for over an hour.
Brian Rowland I didn't have that issue, in fact I like gettin in and out through the roof rather than the door
Do you always not let faster drivers pass on the left, and make them pass on the right and almost loose it? What were the rules of the track?
Lucky dog this looks awesome fun
Matt when are you gonna do a One take in New York!?!? Id love have My B series EF2 reviewed lol
Is it annoying when cars pass on straightaways or does it just make you determined to beat them through the corners?
Tinauris Wise there are five classes in the race. We were in class 2 and every car that passed me was in a higher class so it's all good
Matt would you say that the NC is a bit underappreciated in the Miata world.?
Jp Sierra I think miatas are like corvettes in that to me, the best one is always the newest one.
Matt, you should probably call this One (Massive) Take. But seriously, good on you.
I miss my NC
How is driving with that net? Looked like it got in the way of your shifting a few times
Hasan Elsadig it's slightly annoying but not that bad
Looking back, with your experience were you satisfied with the power of the miata or would you have preferred 500+?
Bell Motorsports I think considering I've never driven the track before, this car was a great way to learn it and it was really fun to drive
Ive been on Mid Ohio half a dozen times.. You killed it for first time... It was obvious from your video that you had a good idea what it was about.. Miata's are great! Id prefer 300hp Miata though..
Bell Motorsports thanks! I did an hour in the CXC simulator to get a feel for the track before I flew out
Awesome! Thanks for the conversation. Stay safe :)
I found the best way to learn how to know the best lines is to follow someone who is good otherwise you will always think you got it fast but not really. Otherway is for engineers to see real-time telemetry to give feedback but the ghost car thing is actually a better option unless their setups are far superior for the track and yours is base then it's pretty much game over considering they are pro.
Hey, Matt.
Team Z3 No boost using all of it's 93 hp there! haha
Love it. about half hour in you got so much better, keeping revs high, braking later, changing sooner, and kicking ass. How did you rank in your team, and did the team win the class? best of luck next track. Oh and That Twat of a driver in the z3 roadster should learn to use his mirrors lol #tunnel vision.
scott mole thanks! We finished 6th in class on day 1, mainly because of slow pit stops and minor repairs. We were fastest in class by lap time. Then on day 2 we were leading our class by 3 laps with 4 hours into the race and had to retire with a mechanical. I was 4 out of 6 on our team by lap time; the road and track guys are very very fast. The top drivers were 1.5 seconds/lap better than me. I'll get there, but it was more about running clean and safe during this session.
I know you are very busy and hard working, but I am wondering if you have anything planned for a video that is not a one take. Like the old videos. I don't mind one takes but some variety couldn't hurt maybe. The NZ videos are my favorite, I'm not saying travel across the globe but traveling in the US maybe is doable
Goofy Xz no, those produced videos are not profitable, whereas one takes are profitable. That's why we make produced films for drive and one takes here. I don't plan to change that.
Ok, good to know! Never say never though :)
The nice stuff is saved for \Drive on NBC Friday nights. It's just too expensive to produce for internet distribution.
That uphill left just before the Honda bridge looked/sounded sketchy as heck.
Would be cool to see lap times!
My brothers!!!!
4:00 that crazy bmw!
great race, the audio, video equipment they used, seems a bit low Tech compared to your normal videos
r0mulyni2 low res, yes. Low tech, no. This video was captured from a live stream in the car. It was about a 10 second delay from the car to the pit box, but that's fucking cool stuff.
TheSmokingTire you got me there that's cool, small delay time for live video.
Matt in a miata. doesn't get much better than that
the audio is slightly off
should I buy an NC or nd Miata. undecided on which one to but. The NC is the heaviest of the Miata , but the ND is expensive , but I could lease one.
Miguel Lopez Nd is way nicer in my op never really liked the NC but to each there own but I bet you will enjoy which ever one you pick
You should pick the NC if you are concerned with price. The cars are not worlds a part in terms of performance/feel and you can use the extra cash for aftermarket parts.
wade18 I just don't like that the NC Miata is 200 lbs heavier and wider and taller. Have you driven an NC ? does it still feel like a Miata?
Miguel Lopez yes I driven both cars. I think the NC has better steering feel since it is hydraulic, but the ND does feel faster.
I've driven all 4 generations. The NC is a nice car, despite what a lot of people say. The ND is def more back to the roots of the NA. I'd honestly save your money and get the cleanest, lowest mileage NA you can find if you want a genuine Miata experience. But if it's really down to those two generations, I'd get the ND if it's in your budget
Massive over rev on a couple of those down shifts but good driving.
Nice!
But Try letting off slower and later, or keeping more at ~half-throttle in some of those longer bends.
Maybe it was just the video, but it seemed a little hesitant. Then again, car could have been really twitchy, idk.
That said, it keeps getting better and better and less hesitant.
but what about harrys razors they gave the travel case for a reason!!!
6 drivers for a race over 8 hrs????? Did they auction off drives at the expense of a result?
gamerscockpit there are 5 mandatory pit stops with a minimum stop time of 3 minutes. So you can get 6 drivers in the car easy, and almost have to.
Matt, I'm curious as to your thoughts on the track?
And Yarm wonderful place, beautiful and challenging. God help you if you have to race there in the wet
TheSmokingTire Yes, it is. I'm lucky enough to live close by and spectate a lot of different events. Races in the wet are very interesting to say the least. Especially coming off the back straight into turn 4 (or 7 in your case). If you ever have time check out the Indy Car/Pirelli World Challenge weekend. Thanks for the vid, looking forward to the Road Atlanta one next year.
Love it
At 4:36 wtf is that bmw z3 driver doing, no awareness of the e30
nice driving Matt, towards the end the sounds get out of sync.
Chuzo1946 yeah unfortunately I got it as one clip so there was no way to change that
Mid-Ohio 😍
opinion on the car?
What caused the retirement?
Robert Holmes we lost our diff drain plug and all the fluid with it
Man what is up with that net right in the way of your shifting hand?? that must've been annoying lol good stuff though
next thind will be live 24 hrs of lemons.
"functional beard" haha
RPM?
