- Most people are familiar with the idea of hair donation but don’t know the labor-intensive and expensive process behind making a real-hair wig. A lot of the sorting and sewing are done meticulously by hand and can take hundreds of hours. We followed Hair We Share, a nonprofit that turns donated ponytails into wigs, through the process of transforming donated hair into realistic wigs for people experiencing hair loss.

Ok it’s awesome what they do with donated hair, but they need better people to cut the hair and style it. The wig the woman in red was doing was not cute.
elledabee that’s all that I could think. I didn’t want to be harsh but if you’re being that picky about the quality and spending so much time threading it why would you make it so flat and lifeless, it kind of saddened me.

She just got the hair. She can go to a hairstylist afterwards to clean it up a bit to her liking. It's not like you can't modify the wig afterwards.

I don’t understand why people are getting so mad about the strict requirements for donated hair. I understand that it feels important to you, but just imagine how much more important these wigs are to those with hair loss. They deserve the best. People should be looking at the receiving requirements of the charity BEFORE sending it away because they should have put in that effort if they wanted to do a good deed. Believe me, I know, that cutting hair off isn’t a small deal; I cut off about 45cm twice in my life

It’s actually so disappointing that not all of the hair makes it into wigs. So many people grow then cut their hair just to donate it.
@W.B S. I don't think discarding tangled or wet hair is a bad example. It's literally impossible to use that hair.
I'm sure they gave instructions somewhere about how the hair needs to be send in and what type of hair they accept.
And it's honestly really understandable that the hair needs to be really healthy.
The hair on the wig doesn't grow back, so for the duration of the wig's lifespan the hair needs to be maintained. Most people don't take great care of their hair. For example They don't care that wearing their hair down causes more split ends. It doesn't matter to them because they aren't expecting to grow their hair to their fingertips. But If your donating hair that is how long the hair needs to hold out for. Lets imagine someone with waist length hair donates. The hair at the waist is about 4 years old. Lets say the recipient wants to wear the wig for 3 years. After 7 years of growth your hair will, on average, hang out somewhere between classic and fingertip length. (if you pull your hair straight, that is)
So, not accepting hair that has been damaged by dye for making wigs is totally understandable. If one puts a lot of work into it it's possible to keep dyed hair fairly healthy for a long time but I wouldn't expect it to last as long as virgin hair even if the recipient knows exactly what they are doing (which is pretty unlikely)
Would you rather them use moldy or damaged hair to make a wig?
I'm one of them. I have 80cm of hair, that pisses me for over a year and now I don't even know if I should donate, if there's a chance my hair just ends in a trashbin.
Latisha, yes it's disappointing,but people that want to donate NEED TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS before donating. There is a list of instructions on their site that is a requirement to follow in order for your hair to be donated. If they say 8 inches or more is the requirement, then it's 8 inches or more. If they say to brush the hair or not make it tangled, then simple brush the hair before sending it to them. If they say dry the hair before sending,put it in the sun til it dries or blow dry it. If they say NO highlighted hair, then no high lighted hair. Like I said it's simple if people were to just follow the instructions. Since certain people don't follow the instructions hair gets wasted.
Klára Leblochová my advice would be to for sure donate it somewhere if you still have it.. That’s always better than just tossing it into the trash can... And It Never hurts to try.... Just please do your own research first, prior to finally choosing the company to donate it to. Because There are some companies (and they’re very well known “donation accepting” companies at that! ) that will either try to charge the clients ridiculous prices for them (like as high as $2,000+/per wig). Or They’ll even try to charge parents for their children’s wigs smh ☹️😞... and 99% of the time they keep this stuff quiet because supposed to be used/thought of as a charity item, that is donated kinda in a circle and some companies will even try to claim it as charity on their taxes so they avoid more fees/taxes.
imagine donating your hair, knowing that you’re doing it for a good cause, just for it to get discarded.

Yeah but most of the hair discarded is because it didn't meet the requirements. Not really the company's fault.

The details are written very clear on our website and it is very sad when people do not follow those instructions. The amount of hair you see not being used is very small in comparison to the amount we receive. We ask very specifically for someone to send their dry and clean hair in a zip lock bag along with their information on the bag in a bubble or padded envelope so that the USPS does not destroy or lose their hair. We love what we do and the people we help. Hair We Share does not sell the donated hair or the wigs we offer to children and adults who struggle with medical hair loss. I hope you will help create the awareness that this video is meant to do by sharing it. Thank you so much for your help!

Michaela I think she’s trying to explain why they seem irritated and frustrating . That basically when people who donate hair do not follow instructions , it creates an extra layer of work. I can imagine how tiring and annoying that would be.

I've just requested a sponsor form from them, I'm booking a hair appointment today to get it cut in August so I can get a couple of extra inches on it before I cut it all off, been wanting to chop it off for a while now and I decided to donate because everyone says it's so shiny and beautiful, but my shortest lengths are 13 inches and they require a minimum of 12 inches so I wanna grow it a tiny bit more before I chop it, completely virgin hair too since I buzzed it off 4 years ago and haven't touched it with bleach, colour or chemicals, I think I've only blow dried it about 4 or 5 times in that 4 years too 😄 hopefully it will go to good use

thank you someone said it 👐Synthetic wigs look more real to me when I wear a real wig I feel like it's more heavy and looks to shiny I like my synthetic wigs to be light in the back and heavy in the front so it's not slipping off my head and dull hair color helps to make synthetic look more real
@@amandadavis2906 i think it's mostly because people tend to use "natural" wigs without styling, while if you're used to wear synthetic you have to personalize, styling and cutting wigs should be basic to use wigs xd

Your hair isn’t real, I’ve learned in cosmetology classes back years ago in high school that you could get this wig but for you, your black (not going to be racial, no worries) and you wouldnt be by born with this kind of hair, you could although have your hair stitched into your head or worn as a wig.
You shouldn’t be wearing a white persons donated hair/wig, because of research done by a verified UA-cam user who stated your increasing your chances of skin rashes, irritation and oddly enough, even cancer cause of the texture of your skin being not used to being to cold, warm, and with certain fabrics, you’d have to normally be in love with all kinds of fabrics otherwise this can ruin your chances if growing hair back on your own when you become something like 30 years old.

I think that hairdressers or the ones in training should also be taught a bit regarding this subject or adress it to the client. A lot of people cut their hair and donate it and it ends up not being used at all and maybe hairdressers could learn whose hair makes the cut and whose doesn't

Thank you. It is a tedious job. However, the reward is fulfilling.
Why is this getting hate? SO much work goes into making these wigs that make people happy. Even if they're not the best, I'm sure if you went through an illness that made you lose your hair, you would be happy to get SOMETHING that reminds you of your old self. Be greatful for the hair on your head and clothes on your back, some people aren't as fortunate.
Human hair wigs can be very expensive...oh yesss... so these real hair wigs donation helps those that can't afford $300, 400, 500 hair wigs...
People forget that they are donated they give them free...if they are pickie then they should go buy 1 and stop complaining....but for those who be wearing stylish lace wigs they know how to make them more realistic than the way these people make their human hair wigs...but is free wth 🤷♀️
It drives people mad that this wigs DON'T' make people happy, they DON'T remind them of their of their old self because the wigs look so unnatural, fake, like helmets. People with illnesses also have a sense of good taste. Giving them such a shitty wig is very disrespecting towards them. And You expect them to be grateful because they got them for free? They are indeed for free and it shows. Should that people be glad with what they get or do they deserve something more? Something that they would actually buy, but they cannot afford to? Wigs are from natural (and selected) human hair and still they managed to make them look like a cheap synthetic wig. Such a waste of hair.

@@gimygaming8655True, when my hairline first started receding I was ecstatic to cut off the lace front of a $13 synthetic thrift store wig and sew it to a headband so I didn't have to think about what was missing.
They should provide training for people who initially cut the hair of the donors so people don’t donate all their hair just to be thrown away.

I mean, the only issue here is people not reading the reqs and following rules, causing the people making the wigs to waste their time. Hair can be regrown and recut. And it's not like computer components in a landfill or anything.
Everyone needs to see this. First, why aren't salons telling donors before the cut only the best hair will be used? Second, they get so much hair--if there's not enough money the wigs don't get made. Even if only young girls with long, healthy, unprocessed hair donated, I think only a few wigs are completed due to costs

Pasta Chocolate dude even if they meet all the instructions and it’s healthy, the lady said they might not be used. Did you watch the video. Like sorry I’m not gonna take all that time to grow my hair out and then have it thrown away. Def not donating to this company. The wigs they make are awful. I’m not trying to be mean but they’d be better off just not cutting it at all and letting the people get them styled how they want themselves.

I would love to take the hair that’s being discarded, it can definitely be put to good use and rejuvenated!
Or as a donator, keep in mind that you’re farming hair for someone else to wear. So condition it, do trims if you need to, but I’ve always put in extra effort on hair I’d donate. If the hairdresser/s are amazed and want to keep any usable extra hair that falls on the ground to test dye samples, then you know you did a good job. 😂

I had hair that was over a metre long until last September, when I got most of it cut off to donate (my 2 year old cousin was devastated), hopefully some little girl get the Rapunzel-like hair I cherished as a little kid.

Lol everyone forgetting he said that the hair costs them NOTHING in regards to it literally costing them nothing, hes not saying they're worthless in fact of course every knows you need good haircare products and nutrition to achieve quality hair. He literally is saying procuring the hair costs nothing due to the system in place allowing people to donate their hair to them...what DOES cost sponsors is the cost of the actual wigmaking itself. Say objectively its a $100 worth of hair but it needs $400 worth of a wigmakers skill and time put into it. The cost of the wigmaker always outshines the cost of the material itself. Yes hair is invaluable for some. But look around, its everywhere, and just cos its hair doesn't mean it needs to be venerated. It doesnt grow from the ground, but it grows out of a scalp and ite close enough.
A lot of love go ♥️ into making these wigs. I hope they bring a smile to the people who receive them🙏

Really hurtful to see how dismissive that man was of the donations. "It costs us nothing..." It certainly costs us, the prospective donors, a lot! I grew out my hair for 3 years and cut it today to donate it, but unfortunately it got tangled and I won't be able to donate it. I was absolutely devastated until I saw this video and realized that even if my hair was in perfect condition, my donation would be so unimportant to them. I'll grow my hair out again but I will never consider donating it again.

I’m considering donating soon and this didn’t deter me at all cuz I already read the instructions of several companies and ik what to do so my hair doesn’t get thrown away immediately even though ik a lot of it will but I’d rather my hair have a chance of making it into a wig than just discarding it like I always have (tbf I grow my hair out A LOT like I’ll go 3+ years without a major cut just trimming lol)

I’m growing mine out and idk if it’s considered good quality in their eyes but I’m going to do it anyways since it might make a difference in someone’s life. Doesn’t change the fact that I would be sad if it isn’t used but it’s for the potential to make someone’s day! 😊

I'm thinking of donating my hair-raising they're very long, since I'm in quarantine I can't do that now but this information really helped!!
I really recommend doing it I did it about 2 years and I really hope that it was used to make a a girl happy
The hook thing is called postiche and let me tell you,its a very frustrating skill to work at. You can very easily rip holes in your cap at the very end of your hairpiece and sometimes you need to start again depending on how bad the damage looks. I hated doing it at first but now I'm kinda glad I have the skill

I’ve had hair past my bum since I was 7 (I’m 24 now) and just cut my hair to shoulder length to donate it and now that I know this I’m already regretting it.
Now that you know the reason it'll be thrown in the garbage, you can work on your hair cutting and storage methods better. Instead of refusing to learn anything from the process and blaming oher people for your mistakes

Companies use hair to clean up oil spills? How? What? Huh?
Hair is REALLY good at absorbing oil, which is part of the reason oils spills hurt animals so much. Because of that, if you take hair and put it in a net thing, it can be dragged on over water, absorbing all the oil off the surface. It's really cool!

I used to have really long hair, I cut it all off about a year ago. I have extremely thick hair so they had to divide my hair in two braids. Both braids were 60 cm long and still pretty thick. I’ve dyed my hair so many times and it’s still healthy, so I think my hair was perfect for wigs! I currently have short hair (like not till my shoulders but even shorter) that my hair dresser has to thin. I hope that my hair was used! Gosh I sound old XD

The people who are making the wigs are doing a really good thing. It's for a good cause and I think it's wonderful that they are doing it. But they didn't seem very happy. Yo everyone saying people are sad about their hair not ending up in a wig...its not the company's fault the quality of the hair isnt good enough, and the guidelines are already online. Also, the hair that didnt make the 'cut'(pardon the pun) ARE used to help make mats to clean up oil spills which if you think about is even MORE important in the grand scheme of things...people need to chilll
I suppose you could use some of the dry discarded hair for birds’ nests? I don’t know how you would get it to them, but I’ve heard of people leaving their stray hair for birds or mixing it into soil in their garden

That's interesting cause a lot of movies in South Asia like Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, or even Hindi movies are also dubbed. Subtitles are hardly ever used unless its on an international streaming site.

I'm from Finland and we don't dub any movies. I like to watch all movies in their original language with subs. To me dubbing is the worst.

i donated my hair when i was younger. i had long ass virgin curly hair and donated it in a braid that i let dry for over a week before sending. i rly hope it got made into a wig lmao
A lot of what they said about “some hair doesn’t even make it to the manufactures” and things like that, is really discouraging me to donate. I have a hair as long as to my lower back.
What they're saying is, they need cash donations so that they can pay the wig manufacturers. It's not that difficult to understand, people need to be paid to work. There's no point sending your hair in if there's nobody to use it, it'll sit in storage and get brittle. So if you want to help people, donate money to the cause!
Donating still has a higher chance of helping someone than not donating and if you take care of it (keeping in mind the requirements) I'm sure it'll make someone very happy 💛 So thank you!
I'm surprised that they discard some hair just because of colour. If everything else is fine, just put it in miscellaneous pile sorted by length and structure, and DYE the hair at some point! If I had to get a wig, I'd love a pink wig, for example. It's already a wig, why not?

I agree with what your saying here. What they fail to mention in this video though is that it takes more than one persons pony tail to make a wig and so they would need multiple pony tails of similar dyed hair in order to make a wig from it. The reason they don't just dye all the hair is because 1. Budget and 2. Hair from different people in different states will take colour differently. Because of the number of pony tails it takes to make 1 wig thats why they only seperate hair in 8 colours otherwise they technically could just make a wig out of every pony in every colour. 🙂

It’s sad how people cut their hair for donation, but this company just throws them away 🙄
If it's not usable and other places don't need or want it then the only other option would be to burn it. Not all hair is usable, also if you're getting in tons of it, then well it's probably not a huge deal.
