I'd owned a number of Chinese clone lamps, but the movement of the lava was always disappointing. I then heard about Mathmos and figured since they created the original, they must be good. Very pleased with my purchase, the lava moves all the way from top to bottom! I also think it's really neat that they still make them in the U.K at the same factory, there's not a lot of things you can still buy today that are still made in their home country.

I got a lava lamp as a Christmas present when I was about 11 or 12 and I was SHOOK. The liquid is either ethylene or propylene glycol. The "wax" is a grade of paraffin at a specific hardness. One can make a lava lamp with candles and windshield washing fluid. Takes a lightbulb that emits heat.
I remember when I was 3 years old. Me and my siblings each had a lava lamp. My brother got red, I had purple and I think my sister got green. I'm not to sure but I definitely know mine was purple.

Just lit mine here at home. I’ve been having a lava lamp at home on and off for probably about 20 years. I like them, they’re decorative and peaceful to watch once it’s all warmed up. Hilarity can occur while it’s warming up too lol I’ve had my lava lamp look like the wax was flipping the bird as it started to melt, and a while ago the wax took the shape of a certain reproductive organ 😂
I've had my lava lamp for the better part of over 2 decades. It's only now needed a new bulb. These are such calming lamps that can last a lifetime. Worth every penny you put into them.
Really fascinating that this company is still around making these. True to quality. They are one of the most iconic images from the 60’s. It’s actually peaceful to watch a lava lamp in action. Calms you.

I really love the company and the products are good, despite the high price, it’s totally worth it and I would recommend Mathmos for anyone who wants to get a great quality lava lamp
The metal spring is placed there to break the surface tension of falling bubbles! The bubbles of lava naturally don't want to combine even when they're squished together by gravity at the bottom, so the spring coil helps pop the surface tension on the bubbles to help them combine again.
me and my siblings used to have a lava lamp each. I was 4 at the time. I had a purple one, my older brother had a red one and my little sister bad a green one. I loved how the lamps would light up the room at night. I'm decorating my room soon and definitely gonna ask for a purple lava lamp😊
The design is just beautiful. It’s also entertaining to just see. Not to mention that fact that on average it takes less space than that of a desk lamp. The only cons are that the bigger they are, the more power and heat will be needed to just start up the lamp and make it just function similarly to smaller types.

I had a lava lamp that was peak 90s. I got it as a Christmas gift from my parents when we went to Sears around Christmas one year. The lava was blue and the liquid clear. The top and base were aquatic themed (dolphins, fish, whales...all swimming in a ocean). The cool thing was the top and base were 3D...not painted or anything. Super detailed. God I loved that thing. Sadly I lost the top and the bottle along the way...still have the amazing base though...I should get a cheap lava lamp and stick it in the base...it won't have the top but it'll be as close as I can get.
I still have my old lava lamp. Bought it when I was about 10, I'm 26 now. Only blew out 2 bulbs in that time frame and I've used it regularly. They don't make products now a days like they use to. 🥺👍
@SamTheSoviet42 and bulbs don’t last very long. I go through a bulb somewhere between 3 weeks and 3 months. Plus it’s getting harder to find the bulbs because nearly every bulb is LED now which doesn’t work in a LAVA lamp.

I had them as a kid and loved watching the blog going up and down. Intriguing display.
me: finally i can know how these lamps work...
Mathmos: no dear, we ain't tellin' ya...
Got one when they came back in style in 90's for Christmas one year. It was blue and white. Now I want one again.
I love lava lamps ♥️
This was a GREAT VIDEO! THANK YOU! I always wondered about these things. And what made them tick. And the really cool part is?
I'm a recording engineer with my own studio. And I did this contracted audio job. Where they brought in their own engineer. That's where I function as the Assistant Engineer. To the contracted Guest Engineer. And this guys name was Mark Williams. And he's terrific. A terrific engineer. A lovely person.
At the end of the recording session. Mark hands me a gift. He really enjoyed my control room. And the gift turns out to be, an Original Lava Lamp. Telling me his father. Was one of the creators. And he grew up a millionaire. And he gives these lava lamps out. At other studios he works at. And how cool is that?! And occasionally I see pictures of other peoples recording studio control rooms. And there's an Original Lava Lamp! Mark was there! You can tell the difference between the originals. And the other knockoffs. As the originals are fatter. Bigger.
But alas. I think all of our lava lamps are going away? As it requires a, incandescent lightbulb. That produces heat. To work. And incandescent light bulbs have gone the way of the dinosaurs. They have gone extinct. There aren't anymore. There will be no more. For time immemorial. It's a thing of the past. That has now been lost through time.
And so somebody's going to have to come up with a, lava lamp heater unit. And a colored LED light show from beneath. Since there will be no more incandescent lightbulbs for lava lamps available. And LEDs ain't going to cut it.
So now I can make millions of dollars! Making replacement heaters for lava lamps! As millions of people are going to need them all around the world!

I've had 2 lava lamps my whole life, they were blue abd light blue, I still have the light blue one, i'm 35 and they are cool just to stare at lol?! ... 😀 🔥
Having this knowledge is basically the same as knowing what the words on the Minecraft enchantment table mean.
This video has convinced me I need to buy one now
I was thinking what am I doing without the big lava lamp and now this...🤣
Ooh, I want the blue one! The blue lava inside the clear liquid is beautiful. 😍
Me: It’s 5am should head to bed
UA-cam: want to see how lava lamps are made??
I still have my old lava lamp. Bought it when I was about 10, I'm 26 now. Only blew out 2 bulbs in that time frame and I've used it regularly. They don't make products now a days like they use to. 🥺👍
I’d love to own one, if only the bulbs weren’t so inefficient.
@SamTheSoviet42 and bulbs don’t last very long. I go through a bulb somewhere between 3 weeks and 3 months. Plus it’s getting harder to find the bulbs because nearly every bulb is LED now which doesn’t work in a LAVA lamp.
I have a very ambitious project of having a home entirely made of mid century modern furnitures and this lamp is on my shopping list.
Why did this pop up in my recommendation one day before my science exhibition
UA-cam KNOWS EVERYTHING
👀😐
Fascinating insight to such gorgeous and enthralling lamps ❤️

Me: Ok
I have one and love it. It's so hypnotizing
