We are located in the center of the #Mediterranean and specifically in Sicily. On its northeast coast there is a city that you will love at first sight. In today's episode we travel to Taormina, a picturesque city of 11 thousand inhabitants. It was founded by the Ancient #Greeks almost 3 millennia ago and its name was #Tavromenion, as it was located next to #Taurus hill.
#Romans, Byzantines, #Arabs, Normans and Spaniards have left their mark on the area, making this colorful place look even richer.
In the 18th century, #European #aristocrats and nobles discovered the magic of this beautiful city, and after Goethe's flattering references, Taormina became the terminus of the Grand #Tour of the time. The city soon became a popular tourist resort, cultural center and meeting place for many European #artists, writers, and intellectuals. The entrance to the city is through two medieval gates. Porta #Messina and Porta #Catania, which lead to the neighboring cities respectively.
