For the best results when you want to achieve a lime wash-like finish on walls without using lime wash, you'll want to start with a base coat in a lighter shade of the same color used for your top coat, then mix the top coat 1:1 with a clear satin glaze and apply with whatever tool gives you the visual texture you want. I used the glaze method with a sea sponge to finish my hall bath, layering 3 darker yellows (the darkest being almost ochre) over a pale yellow base to achieve an aged parchment look, and it came out stunning.
I was wondering. I’ve never done this just had a vague recollection that your explanation is how it should be done. The desired result is tonal contrast rather than different colors, right?
Well I was thinking that the variation is a bit stark, so I can see how that might work. I was wondering what would happen if you put gold or burnt orange underneath.
Great response, I was going to post the same thing about using glaze - it can also give you a more subtle watercolor type effect if that is the look that you are going for.
I’m an occasional professional painter (of illustration not rooms) and have to echo the comments advocating two paints for a lime wash look using regular wall paint. I would suggest identifying the lime wash color you want, finding the closest color in a wall paint brand, and buying two paints: a paint two shades lighter and two shades darker. Paint the darker shade over the entire wall, allow to dry, and then go in with a rag and dry buff on the lighter color, slowly building up as desired. You can always go back over with the darker shade! This way you don’t need to entirely rely on that difficult arm work AND the eye will naturally compensate for the difference in the colors from afar/see the desired tone with added dimensionality. Anyway… I love this makeover ❤️
As someone with similar background I agree. I'd also rather use a matte emulsion than a regular latex paint. Latex paintd attract dust (static) and have a plastic feel. Emulsions come in many varieties and arent static, and much better for the environment and prettier. Mixing your own emulsion also isn't that difficult. So much cheaper than buying Little Green etc. But you can't paint with latex paint over home made emulsion or limewash. Sponge-painted latex paint walls was done to exhaustion in the late 80s. Sortof like glossy apricot paint on textured wallcovering.
Overall I think this is gorgeous, and major props for being bold and going dark! One thing I’d suggest: for the walls I would have done the sponging on top of a base coat of slightly lighter blue… the white showing through looks a bit unfinished to me. And the sink is beautiful if it’s mostly a guest bathroom, but man I would hate trying to fit my hands in that tiny thing on a daily basis without splashing water everywhere 😂
A third coat might have been the solution. And maybe two or three colours might have been more interesting. The large sink spout seems to be completely out of proportion with the small size of the basin. Splish-splash indeed!
I thought the same thing, too, about the size of the sink. Guests probably won’t think about drying the wood top after washing their hands, either. I know it’s sealed, but it just seems like it wasn’t well thought out.
It's so interesting to see the sponge effect paint coming back in style. I definitely remember helping my parents with a sponge texture project in the 2000s.
I think I would have liked the wall paint effect better if it was done on top of one basecoat of the blue paint. To me it looks like something went wrong. It’s a rare Team AG miss for me. Now the rest of the make over though: I love the moody vibes, that sink is stunning! And the vanity is such a good find! Plus gold/brassy details will always get me ❤
I was just thinking the same thing. I don’t think there’s ever been anything that Team AG has done that I’ve not liked, but I’m not a fan of this paint job. To me, it looks kind of like a child did it. Other than that, I absolutely love the makeover!!
I really like everything but the texture on the walls. Just a personal preference. I grew up in the 80s and 90s where all forms of this was over done. But I do love the color. The vanity is my favorite ❤ it's nice to see moody dark styles because I'm burnt out on the light and bright tones where everything kinda looks the same.
I was coming here to say the same. Everything looks great, and I don't mind the kookey mirror so much, but the paint... I saw so many 80s homes with sponge/rag ain't and it never ever looked good..I could say that this technique might have worked if they used it on an already tonal wall (shade up for brighter and down for moodier, your perference) but on top of the white it looks shabby cheap. Otherwise, I would love this in my house, P.s. I bet you 100% they repaint within the year.... sns
Moody is so great in small spaces. We once bought a house with a smallish bathroom that had navy blue walls. Adding a pure white shower curtain and white towels made it look amazing.
My words exactly. Have to say I did cringe a bit with the painting. Although the color was beautiful, (loved it on the celling), the walls just didn't work. Loved the vanity and countertop! Was confused though, by the artwork for a family, friendly guest bathroom. 🤔
When I saw the sponges come out, I was crying, No!!! 🙀 I sometimes wonder what the new owners of my house where I did a textured sponge effect in the early 90s. When they wanted to paint a new colour they must have had to sand all the walls as really it was a bumpy mess. To be honest, I would prefer the solid colour . It’s such a gorgeous blue with incredible depth.
The more I watch the more I love Graham. He’s so adorable and his experiments with the vinegar is so relatable. My siblings and I did stuff like that too. 😅
I love how you mentioned that the bathroom doesn’t necessarily have to match the whole house, especially something small like a powder room, could be its own style! Well done! 👏🏼❤
I don’t know why no one else likes the texture and movement of the walls. I LOVE IT! Makes me think of like a black chalk board. Finally a video that’s more my style and color palette. ❤😊
Me either, but that that sink bothers me more it's a great piece of art but it's just not practical especially if you got kids, I hope this isn't their only bathroom, you can tell they ain't feeling it.
I am having a massive reaction to those walls, which bothers me. I *want* to like them but it’s like I just physically can’t. However, the color is great and the rest of the details in the room are perfect. If it were my powder room I would just zip a traditional coat of the same color up and then it would be true love!
I agree. Probably my least favourite renovation. The elements work but not quite the way it's been done. The white streaks are too prominent for my liking, and does not look like lime wash to me. i would prefer a more muted cloud look rather than the streaks. While the cupboard was lovey, I didn't like the glass as you could see the toilet paper and plumbing, which to me is an eye sore. It was kitsch, and will date pretty quickly. I would have preferred something a little more organic and classy.
Love this! I ain't a pro, but someone taught me a painting skill which is quite easy to do. Basically, you paint a color on a white wall, let it dry, then pass the sander vertically from top to bottom. I once painted a tiny white bathroom a moody blue and did the trick and it looked like a distressed wall from Europe!
Another technique is to paint the walls in color of choice then dab paint with a scrunched up rag in a color slightly lighter or darker. Random dabs then rescrunching the rag to get a different pattern as you randomly dab the paint. Looks alot more organic.
So great to try a paint experiment! It’s just paint! This did really bring me back to TLC’s Trading Spaces though - does anyone else remember when they would sponge paint walls all the time? ❤
This was basically my reaction to the entire makeover. The walls look completely amateurish. The cabinet looks like it needs to be refinished. The sink -- how old will her toddler be before he can reach over the sides to wash his hands? The towel holder -- why not just order it in brushed brass instead of another amateurish attempt? Once the finish is altered, will it withstand the test of time? The toilet roll holder does not blend with the style of the room, and the metal bits are silver. The shelves look cheap. This is a hard no for me, except for the cabinet knobs. Compare those to the toilet roll holder and decide if they belong in the same makeover.
I love that the vintage elements of brass fixtures/gold frames/paintings were easily integrated with the modernity of the sink and the shelf storage -- so many lessons here for people who want to mix decor (or use things they already have!) while holding true to the moody vibe. Love this makeover as always - Team AG never disappoints
I actually do really like it, and applaud trying something different. That sink! 😍 Though if I were to try the walls I think a normal coat of paint in a similar but lighter / darker colour under one layer of the sponge-effect would be a better result. That way its not reading as the white walls underneath, and one layer of the sponge effect was more effective as a pattern imo
Ok so throughout I really was cringing at the sponge effects on the walls, and then at the very end with all the elements added, I must say I do love it. It really works
I absolutely love your channel and approach to design. You probably hear this all the time, but I have learned so much about my own preferences and how to work with what I've got to create my best space. thank you! ❤
I love the mood of this bathroom. My Dad redid his bathroom in these charcoal tones and something just is a little off, and I realise now that it's the fixtures. They need to be brass, and adding some wooden elements will give it more balance. Thanks for the lesson, team AG.
I really enjoy your videos transporting myself back to the 90s when I was a few years older than you are now. The HGTV & TLC contents were full of DIY design projects with probably faux paint finishes being the most popular. I threw myself into that wholeheartedly. Christopher Lowell was extremely into this vibe. I copied one of his looks. It was faux leather. I painted a dining room with a deep red flat paint. In the same color applied high gloss, lifting off with massive wads of plastic wrap. Man that was ambitious.
I think the problem is not with the paint technique but with the execution, especially on the wall right of the sink, more dark and messy than dark and moody. Everything else is very lovely.
Beautiful. The only thing I don't like is the shelve on top of the toilet. Feel like it does not go with the new style of the powder room and is too bulky
I am absolutely loving the projects you're doing lately. They've really matured so much. That being said please clean the mirrors (this is the third video I've noticed the smudges on them). It distracts from all the other amazing work you and the team have done. Can't wait for the next one.
Totally agree! Mirrors are sneaky beasts, you gotta look from all angles to find the streaks and smudges. I’ve noticed it in a few videos too. Love the finished product though. Well done Team AG!
Such a tiny sink, would be a complete no for me. Even though it looks good. Functionality is something. I believe you are not keeping the area around the sink dry when washing your hands...
I'm also thinking how messy the child will be with hand washing (speaking from experience, kids just love splashing) . Water will be everywhere with a sink that tiny, no matter how pretty it is. Childless people designing without children in mind.
i feel like you couldnt even get your hands under it. idk but this entire makeover was a miss for me :( which is probably the first time ive ever said that about an AG video!
Love the sink and vanity however would have etched the glass so you don't see silver plumbing. Great paint colour, really bad application. Supposed to remove frog tape before paint dries, saves doing touch ups. I don't understand a black shelf, that would have been great in gold/brass.
Every time I sat on the toilet looking at the plumbing would send me bonkers!! A faux back board to hide the plumbing would have made a huge difference. To me the overall concept of the entire design was great but I feel every aspect just fell short of the mark.
I love Graham's chaotic energy with the mop haha. Also my anxious self would have waterproofed that whole vanity just in case. I love the moody vibes, I'm learning so many makeover hacks from your channel. Definitely keeping note of those when I get to do my space :)
LOL! Most of the walls in my moms house (done by previous owner) are sponge or textured painted and I ALWAYS see creepy face images. Painting them all over!
Hmmm.. I’d say this is the first time that I’m not a fan of the finished room.. I think it’s due to the sponged paint effect… but the home owners love it so that’s all that matters ❤
im going to be moving into my own space soon and i cannot tell you how much your channel has made me so excited for it. i have a pretty niche aesthetic but watching these videos has given me the confidence to go all in on it. thank you for sharing these make overs with the world!
Nailed it! This little powder room is packed with mood and style! Love the paint color and texture. It looks amazing with the wood tone of the vanity !
Interesting effects on the wall. I think the thrifted vanity still looks like the original other than it is a piece of wooden furniture. Was hoping for a vanity that was more ornate.
Love the dark/ moody Navy direction for this small powder room with it's burnished gold accents & curved black shelves. Even the Light is novel & functional. Less-than-loved the Wall treatment Also, the Sink, while cute, is likely less than practical with frequent splash-overs probable.
So Alexandra, my husband has used a desk for our family bathroom vanity. It’s easier than a chest, because it’s easier to use the plumbing under the sink. Also he used a router to add a design to the top of the vanity and then put dark stain on the top and it kinda sinks in to the grooves he added with the router. The first time he did it he sealed it with polyurethane like you did. I almost thought you knew this hack, but our bathroom is a full bath with a tub shower combo across the room from the vanity. The poly didn’t hold up. So I suggested marine varnish and he did this 10-15 years ago and it worked great! I highly recommend it! Lotsa love to you and your team! ❤️
I did a similar thing in a really dark purple in my dining room once. Cheesecloth was what I used and it was more subtle, and easier to get in the corners. It was very messy work, but I loved it. I love that vanity.
I like it! Wasn't sure about the wall paint, but when it all came together it was perfect. I also like that there is some small white accents because the toilet will remain white. The sink and vanity are beautiful.
Having sponged many rooms and closets and an attic with walls and floors done like a cloud inside, this is of special interest to me. The doors of every closet were removed before taking possession, no money left to replace8--- so fabulous colors and special techniques ended up selling that house. You did so well by doing samples ahead. So no screaming into pillows or the abbyse (sp.?) needed later. Thank you. Nice choices. Never seen a sink like that Good art, colors done with thought and care . We appreciate your resident angel boy.
I was actually LMAO with you three going through the R & D phase. Graham is hilarious!! But all of you together are just too funny. "I see a snout..."🤣
Finally the style I’m into is featured, I love to see all the different styles for Inspo but I love Victorian vintage cottage dark academia moody spaces with hint of retro. I love the dark wood dark wall color, brass and gold elements, but not into the modern ones, some of it feels misplaced. Also don’t love how the texture pulled together but it had potential I think the sea sponge maybe with one coat of blue would’ve been interesting to see.
One thing to keep in mind with textured paint finishes is that you'll have to sand when you repaint. Otherwise the texture shows through during your next makeover.
@@icecreammaker5007 oooh, stripes would be super distinctive. We had a sponge paint finish, and the wall looked like it was covered in drips or finger prints. We had already done one coat of the new colour and had to sand the whole wall pretty aggressively.
it’s funny but i actually think this is what they should have done here. paint one more coat over it so the textures still shows but doesn’t look as messy-spongey as it does right now. love this bathroom though.
This bathroom is stunning. I love how the lime wash turned out, it actually looks like it was made with coloring pencils and I'm crazy for it. Also all the gold details, that vanity and especially the pearl handles!!
I’m the biggest AG fan but think I’m too old to go back to sponge painting and I’d find it too dark but each to his/her own and it’s nice to see you do a variety of things
Love the AG TEAM. Each member of the Team is ridiculously cool. Fell in LOVE with James, instantaneously. Carla is simply a ROCK STAR. The entire "A"-TEAM (meaning: Alexandra, Alissandra, Amanda, Alexa?--seriously cannot keep up with all of the A-Teams' respective names--but, LOOOOVE!)... And then there's GRAHAM (and Thumper!!!!) WHAT!?!? PRICELESS TREASURE OF A HUMAN. MVP of MVP's. No words do justice... Absolutely love watching all of you vibe while making magic happen. THANK YOU for all this GOODNESS.
I didn't really get that impression- what, l just bc they didn't include a clip of them screaming about them? I think y'all are just seeing what you want because you don't like them.
Hi just wanted to say hello, and thank you for your delightful videos. Some of your ideas are very ingenious, and I always find inspiration and like your styles of interior design, as well as your happy, lovely personality. Thank you so much!
I’m always so amazed with the different styles you guys accomplish! I loved seeing you guys experimenting for lime wash effect bc it shows the process of figuring out the desired effect rather than it just boom being the perfect right decision from what looks like the first try. I think that’s my favorite part of this channel, the trial and communication amongst the team for the best result.
I think others might have said this before but you need to add a layer of paint first and then use the props on top rather than actually paint with them. I live your feed. I watch you most days. Thank you so much.
I was wondering what would happen if you put gold or burnt orange underneath.
picture please !
Great response, I was going to post the same thing about using glaze - it can also give you a more subtle watercolor type effect if that is the look that you are going for.
literally was going to comment a similar idea! agreedd!
This way you don’t need to entirely rely on that difficult arm work AND the eye will naturally compensate for the difference in the colors from afar/see the desired tone with added dimensionality. Anyway… I love this makeover ❤️
The trick to this I think would be using less of the buff color than you think you will need so it can really blend into the existing color
I think application is everything with these techniques. If it's not done right, it doesn't look polished.
Right, the dusty rose and sponge walls!!
Everything in design comes back around
I love how Graham brings a sense of humor in your videos
I think I would have liked the wall paint effect better if it was done on top of one basecoat of the blue paint. To me it looks like something went wrong.

I think I would have preferred it over a solid coat of a slightly different blue shade. Otherwise loved the makeover.
Agree. Good attempt at vintage moody but the paint job looks cheap.
I really liked the walls for some reason. The sink, not so much.
This was a miss for me too. The paint technique looked pretty rough, but could easily be fixed with a glaze.
Graham is a whole mood! 😅 There's no sugar coating to expect from him, love it!

I remember sponge painting my sister's powder room in the 90s.
Debbie Travis... back in the day... stencils and all.

Oh my God, yes, this was giving such Trading Spaces vibes.
The cement basin, faucet, and mirror are perfection.
"It sucks. It's not good." - Graham is hilarious and Alexandra's reaction to him is delightful. Keep up the teamwork, ya'll!
Every time I sat on the toilet looking at the plumbing would send me bonkers!! A faux back board to hide the plumbing would have made a huge difference. To me the overall concept of the entire design was great but I feel every aspect just fell short of the mark.
I love Graham's chaotic energy with the mop haha. Also my anxious self would have waterproofed that whole vanity just in case. I love the moody vibes, I'm learning so many makeover hacks from your channel. Definitely keeping note of those when I get to do my space :)
Yes 'sealing' the whole wooden piece is my thought too. Water is bound to drip past just the top.
When Graham says: "it sucks! Looove him!!!!!!!!😂😂😂 great work as always Ale&team!!!
LOL! Most of the walls in my moms house (done by previous owner) are sponge or textured painted and I ALWAYS see creepy face images. Painting them all over!
You’re a genius. People should NEVER underestimate you. Beautiful.
Hmmm.. I’d say this is the first time that I’m not a fan of the finished room.. I think it’s due to the sponged paint effect… but the home owners love it so that’s all that matters ❤
Love love the moodiness of this bathroom! Love the paint color, but not the sponging technique! But all in all nice vibe!!
I love ALL y’all, but Graham… Brilliant. Inventive. Hilarious.
Absolutly love that sink I'd definetly use that in a van or tiny homes too.
im going to be moving into my own space soon and i cannot tell you how much your channel has made me so excited for it. i have a pretty niche aesthetic but watching these videos has given me the confidence to go all in on it. thank you for sharing these make overs with the world!
Wait but this hair color on Alex 😍😍
Wow. What a great transformation. The thrifted vanity is so unique. Great idea. But the star is that sink and faucet. Bravo team AG
Nailed it! This little powder room is packed with mood and style! Love the paint color and texture. It looks amazing with the wood tone of the vanity !
Seriously, I love how moody and warm the space is! My only change would be a shorter mirror so that the faucet isn't reflected.
I love that you use Etsy as a source! Please consider some vintage shops as well.
You are Awesome, Alexandra!
Interesting effects on the wall. I think the thrifted vanity still looks like the original other than it is a piece of wooden furniture. Was hoping for a vanity that was more ornate.
It's all very pretty, but that SINK and that VANITY! Just so cool and entirely original.
Love the dark/ moody Navy direction for this small powder room with it's burnished gold accents & curved black shelves.
Even the Light is novel & functional.
Less-than-loved the Wall treatment Also, the Sink, while cute, is likely less than practical with frequent splash-overs probable.
This bathroom is beautiful! I wasn’t sure about the walls at first but I love it
Oooh you left me behind on this one. I could not dislike the paint more. That bathroom would depress the hell out of me but each to their own.
One of the best makeovers the AG team have done so far. Small but mighty transformation❣
I’m dying to see you work with a traditional aesthetic!
The sink with the vanity and mirror is just so gorgeous
i did the sea sponge technique in the 80s. Funny how trends come back!
It's absolutely amazing!!!
Wall colour cud never be better ..
I love it .. way too awesome ❤
Love the picture and the mirror and sink and overall vibe.
I like it! Wasn't sure about the wall paint, but when it all came together it was perfect. I also like that there is some small white accents because the toilet will remain white. The sink and vanity are beautiful.
Ohhh!! I don't have anything good to say about this make over, but as long as the client likes it, it's fine.....for them!
Old dirty rag for the win...
Cracked me up that this did better than bought texture rolls 🤣🤣
For me, dark and moody is the Only way to go. 😍
Love this powder room. I also love that your spaces are starting g to be more tailored to clients wishes, resulting in unique designs.
Very cool... I am certain they are going to change that wall color though.
I would like to see that technique with a second coat be a light "glaze" coat ?!
I agree with the modern elements.
I'm not a fan of the paint technique but love the color.
people said this was a miss but I think it's up to preference. I ADORE this
Love, love, love that you are implementing more secondhand. Keep it up
That sink and vanity are gorgeous!! I can see why you love their sinks..
One thing to keep in mind with textured paint finishes is that you'll have to sand when you repaint. Otherwise the texture shows through during your next makeover.
Great point. 👍
So true. It happened to me when I did a striped accent wall.
Love it all except the sink as it reminds of one of the pet fountains and shallow BUT it looks great and is not my home. I love watching everything!
love the dark, romantic and moody vibe. A WIN !!!
Hello Alexandra, I just wanted to say I love your hair color. Looks BEAUTIFUL ♥️❤️
Now, that space definitely has personality. Fantastic. And Thumper!!!!! Melted my heart.
Yo aside from this turning out super gorgeous I was also low key envious of your purple jumpsuit! So cute on you! I want one ❤✨
This is beautiful. Maybe my favourite powder room makeover. I love how moody it is. Perfect wall colour and the sink and faucet are gorgeous.
Beautifully redesigned 🎉! The sink is a dream, but it seems very small... and I get the impression that the owners don't like the walls all that much.
They weren't very enthusiastic about the walls.
I didn't really get that impression- what, l just bc they didn't include a clip of them screaming about them? I think y'all are just seeing what you want because you don't like them.
I’m having late 90s early 00s flashbacks seeing the sea sponge come out.
Aaaah memories😁
Warm cozy dark loo! Great work. 👍
That cabinet was a great find for the vanity.
Love the Team AG BTS of sniffing the sponge and testing the paint techniques 😂 beautiful result as always
Hi just wanted to say hello, and thank you for your delightful videos. Some of your ideas are very ingenious, and I always find inspiration and like your styles of interior design, as well as your happy, lovely personality. Thank you so much!
Love, love, love love love love love love love love love love love!🎉
I’m always so amazed with the different styles you guys accomplish! I loved seeing you guys experimenting for lime wash effect bc it shows the process of figuring out the desired effect rather than it just boom being the perfect right decision from what looks like the first try. I think that’s my favorite part of this channel, the trial and communication amongst the team for the best result.
I think others might have said this before but you need to add a layer of paint first and then use the props on top rather than actually paint with them. I live your feed. I watch you most days. Thank you so much.
Wow, the room has so much more personality. Very cute! I have a very plain, beige, builder-style powder room and this helps with ideas!
I really like the sink and cabinet.
I don’t know if I have ever thought of my ideal bathroom experience as “thrilling” lol. Love this style
OMG THAT SINK!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ It just makes the entire remodel!!!
wow! it was soooo beautiful! love these dark moody vibes! the art and gold details, the gorgeous vanity!!! it was so perfect
Graham, you’re not alone! I love white vinegar taste too!🤷♀️
