The boat is gorgeous...killer cams in those motors ..sounds like perfection ..its funny how some people have negative comments about it.. it's a beautiful boat.. usually the ones who bad mouth it cant afforded the ropes to tie it... good luck with it ..its gorgeous..its Miami vice.
Watching Miami Vice on Friday nights was a big highlight of my early teens. Thanks, this brought me back! Can't think of another boat I'd like to take a ride in.
The ChrisCraft Stinger was a first season only boat. As I recall for the second season ChrisCraft wanted the studio to buy the boats instead of leasing them. That pissing match lead to the Scarabs.
Cool :-) Brings back good memories. Just need to find the white Ferrari Testarossa, back then all I wanted was a Scarab and Testarossa. Some things never change :-). Thanks for posting this video, it brightened my day.
I love a scarab ... in the past I used to own a 30 foot scarab panther with bb twins excellent boat handles great lakes very well I sold it and never should have now finding another one in good shape is like looking for a pin and a hay pile
Such a beautiful thing! I've wanted this Wellcraft since I was 9! I had three of the Monogram model kits. I LOVE the colors and the sound of those twin Mercury V-8s!
Loved that show...the opening was the best opening in TV (maybe along with the old Hawaii Five O)...I was in a bar one night chasing skirts and had on my white linen pants and my pastel tee and a girl walked up to me and said I looked like Don Johnson....made my decade...lol.
I spent 25 years boating on Lake Michigan with my parents. Our favorite boat was our 4 Th it was a 42 foot Christ Craft with twin 283 motors. It wasn’t very fast but it was a beauty!! It was very sea worthy.
My Bro had one of those old Stingers. It was built like a tank and a fun boat! It ran pretty smooth in large chop (as opposed to my jet boat which could kick its ass). The old TRS drives on it were bullet proof but a pain in the ass to maintain & work on.
Absolutely superb! A shame Wellcraft Scarabs are just not like this anymore! A beast of a boat! The Donzi’s from the Miami Vice film looked great but the Scarab from 80’s......👌🏻
Wellcraft went bankrupt a number of years ago. Pretty sure there hasn't been a Scarab of any sort made in a decade or more. Still remember my 86. Baby version (Scarab 1, 22 feet), fun boat for lake duty. Moved to a Formula 252 and eventually a Fountain, but the 38KV with the MV Imron is one of the most beautiful creatures of its kind to grace our waterways. The owner has clearly put more into it than I can imagine, and is very lucky indeed to have it. 👍
Simple google search reveals that Wellcraft came back in 2023. I’m looking at their website now showing their 2024 lineup. Beneteau has been making Scarabs since 2014.
I was a passenger boat Captain in Miami in the 1980s and saw them regularly.Yes them. There were at least two.One day as i was cruising down the ICW the two came flying by my boat from behind at high speed passing my boat one on each side and thrillrd my 300 passengers Had Don Johnson on my boat one day and ran into Philip Michael Thomas one day literally! Neither of us were looking where we we walking and collided and almost fell over.
I saw the boat last when it was docked near me at 55th Street Marina in Cleveland. I knew the owner it and I've wondered what happened to it and him. It was called Lady Vice then.
I hate loud, obnoxious speedboats, but this is a bit of television history, so I gave it a thumbs up. Pretty cool that this boat has been preserved and taken care of.
1 year sub of aquahaulic. Looking back to see what I missed. Glad I went back! The sound of those Merc’s are incredible! American muscle car times 2 is all I can think of
"Stupid grin time'' doesn't matter boats, cars, planes big American piston engines sound fantasic either at idle or at full chat. Bloody awesome I bet that would interesting to steer in chop what those wrist lol.😉 nice job nick 👍👍
I had a buddy that owned the shop that kept those boats running he told me there were three. Each boat had its role depending on the scenes they were filming so hopefully all three of them still exist
From memory (I spoke to someone from Wellcraft when I wrote an article about the boat) I think that there were two per season. But there were detail differences, later boats had spotlights on the arch, the arch colour changed from white to silver, I think the deck changed colour too. This boat was apparently the very first Scarab, used in Season 2. I've not heard of the whereabouts of any others but hopefully they're out there somewhere.
Yeah, you know why there were 3? They all kept breaking. The boats were on a rotation program through out the TV series. So, here's the story I heard, as Vice went on the air in the 80's; the powers to be went to 3 offshore racing boat companies to get a 30' + boat for the show. The 3 companies that were contacted were Chris Craft/"Stinger", Cigarette Racing Team/"Top Gun" & Well Craft/"Scarab". The decision maker(s) from the show supposedly wanted both a free boat & maintenance for the TV series. As the story goes, Chris Craft said yes to the free boat, but no for maintenance. Cigarette, being a small custom offshore racing boat company, said no to both the free boat & maintenance. Well Craft apparently said yes to both; and immediately began sportin' those floral Floridian colors in many of their boating magazine advertisements; being the Miami Vice boat! Assuming the story is true; I'm willing to bet Cigarette wishes they gave Miami Vice one of their Top Guns. In hindsight, maybe Cigarette did the right thing, regardless of the immediate loss they would of incurred as a result of giving away a $300,000.00 +boat as well as a maintenance program. Maintenance would of been minimal though; Don Johnson (in real life) knew how to drive these type boats. In fact, he was pretty damn good at it; he raced professionally! If Cigarette's Top Gun did become the Miami Vice Machine; they would of experienced the same type of overnight success that Well Craft did with their 38' Scarab. That would of possibly been a potential problem for them; only manufacturing 120 handmade custom boats a year at the time. However, Cigarette would of only had to give them just one boat vs. Wellcrafts 3,,,,,,,😎. My brother bought a Well Craft Scarab 22' back in the mid 80's. The Alpha outdrive began to flip flop off the back of the transom of the boat; he fixed the problem then sold the boat immediately! He then bought a Magnum Marine 27' CC; couldn't of been happier. By no means, am I out to bad mouth this Miami Vice Scarab. I'm sure, after this boat has been restored; it's better than new! Furthermore, a piece of great history is now in the hands of it's new & rightful owner. Undoubtedly, a fair amount of money was spent to make it right. Let's face it, Miami Vice was a dynamite show at the time! We'll never know how many offshore racing boats (twins) and speed boats (single) this TV series sold ,,,,,,,😋. They say the movie Bullit sold 900,000 Ford Mustangs first year after the movie came out and Ferrari of North America claims that there was a 14% bump in sales after Magnum PI hit the screen. I kid around with friends of mine, telling them that Apache, Cigarette, Donzi, Magnum, Well Craft and hundreds of other offshore race boat companies all should have an 8 x 10 picture of "Crockett & Tubbs" on the wall of every boat company that manufactured these type boat! Let's face it, these 2 characters sold a lot of boats with stainless steel pipes hanging off the transom!,,,,,,,😎.
One of the original Miami Vice boats was for sale (in the 1990s) in Germany via the exclusive car dealer AutoSalon in Singen. That boat was the only one of its kind legally permitted on the Bodensee. I don't know where that boat is located now.
That was the boat back in the day. One of my faves...it's a shame it's slow compared to today's step bottom, V bottom boats. In the 80's, 80mph was killer fast. And still is on water. Now days a triple nickel step bottom cigarette runs almost 90. Great video!
Out on Lake Wawasee in Indiana I saw a Scarab racing a Bass boat! The bass boat won, it was out of the water with the prop being the only thing in the water, it had a 250hp and back then it was a expensive engine! But the expensive boats would race every weekend!
I've got a Scarab and her name is Vice Drivin' on Lake Erie at speed - it's so nice She's a good old worker and a good old pal We go over 50 flying' past that Erie Canal (from the old work song - Low Bridge, about a mule pulling a barge on the Lake Erie's canal )
I loved Miami Vice also! I didn't know the boat was there on the lake, I would have tried to find it, I lived in Sandusky. I remember working at Marble Head or Catawba Island and heard a boat SCREAMING! The house I was at was close to the shoreline, and there it was JAWS!!! When I saw JAWS in your video, I was reminded of that day and seeing the rooster tail she was casting out behind her. Thanks for the video!
I watched this a year ago coz I’m a Miami vice fan like loads on here and since watched your other vids. Didn’t actually realise til now you’re on the boat!😵😎
babying the throttle to save her motor for another day. on miami vice she got well used, they always had the hammer down coming out of the water. nice boat
I made a 56 inch replica RC boat with two 26 cc weedeater engines in it back in the early 2000. Has a guy lay up a fiberglass hull, painted it the same colors and everything. wound up selling it because I had no where to store it but had several hours of fun running it before that. It even had water cooled exhaust for the realistic sound.
I grew up in South Florida in the 80s and That' boat is just cool IMO Back the they couldn't make them long enough or loud enough to meet the demand you never knew what you would see running around the water All the Cocaine Cowboys had them it was a blast to go bar hopping by boat to see what else was tied up to the dock
Definitely not the original engines, which can be seen in another of the vids of this boat. I looked at a well used example around 2005, and it was going to take a metric ton of money to get it back to where I would have wanted it to be. From the factory, these boats predated all but maybe the Bravo 1, and no Bravo drives were offered on the 38. The originals all had TRS drives IIRC, which were a huge pain. I expect the handful of restored original 38KVs with this package have completely reworked powertrains...
I was just going to ask if this was on Lake Erie and then I see it in the description. Around the 6:00 mark you went past Mouse Island. What motors does this particular Miami Vice Scarab KV have?
i saw that boat brand new at Jacob _javets convention center in new york in the early 80s there was a 50 foot Cary next to it with 4 engines all chromed out mirrors in engine room and 4 spare props they were the nicest boats i ever seen
The original MV boat was a Chris Craft 39 scorpion shortly after came this model. However it might be one used for the show? If that’s what the title meant.
I used to own a 16' cedar strip canvas canoe hand-manufactured by the Ojibway Indian tribe in Canada that sounded EXACTLY like this ---- ah .... paddling memories
You should consider using a drone to augment your videos and capture different perspectives and angles. Also maybe a better quality camera with a proper gimbal. Love your videos but I think you could up the production quality a bit. That Miami Vice boat is loud and obnoxious. I prefer your super yacht tours. I’ve been really enjoying those! Love your narration! 👍
A few questions from a land lover who can't swim: Is it okay to drive the boat with just one engine running? For instance, when navigating slowly through a tight marina late at night, with apartments nearby, one might want to cut the noise down. And if so, does it matter which engine is used, starboard or port? One last question: When firing up both engines, does it matter which one you fire first, and do they need to be shut down in any particular order? Thank you.
No. You need both engines to maneuver the boat in tight quarters. I had a 43' Wellcraft (and had two others previously). You can operate them on one engine, but they're much harder to maneuver. Around the docks, I never touched the wheel. It was all done with forward - neutral - reverse, a little port engine, a little starboard engine and so on.
they shot the original movie in our office. There are scenes of them Sony following the girl into the bathroom, the Captain's office, and when they came to pickup the guy at the end of the movie. All in our Office. Also they shot the river scenes just across the street and 2 of our ships are in that shot.
My favorite speed boat. I grew up in the 80's, loved Miami Vice tv show. Nice to see that she's still running strong.
Nice boat
The boat is gorgeous...killer cams in those motors ..sounds like perfection ..its funny how some people have negative comments about it.. it's a beautiful boat.. usually the ones who bad mouth it cant afforded the ropes to tie it... good luck with it ..its gorgeous..its Miami vice.
In the TV show they used 3 different speed boats
Humorous assumption
@@christophepseudonyme more than that
This is the reason why I study everyday! One day I'll bring a Scarab to Brazil, my home country.
Thanks for the video.
F boats. Those Brazilian mamas are waaaay more important!
Sweet mother of pearl. That sound. Love it.
Watching Miami Vice on Friday nights was a big highlight of my early teens. Thanks, this brought me back! Can't think of another boat I'd like to take a ride in.
I was in my early twenties when that show came out I absolutely loved it great video
Yeah, Got That Right 💯
The Scarab was the second boat on Miami Vice. The first one was a Chris Craft Stinger. Both unbelievable Awesome boats. Thanks for the video.
That's absolutely right! 🙂
The ChrisCraft Stinger was a first season only boat. As I recall for the second season ChrisCraft wanted the studio to buy the boats instead of leasing them. That pissing match lead to the Scarabs.
“Hey Tubbs, ever considered a career in southern law enforcement?”(pause) “Maybe.....maybe.”
She looks and sounds great, What a blast to be able to still drive her.
Oh man what a beautiful thing to see that cigar boat again, just love it,thanks for sharing,
This would make my life complete to ride and drive this iconic boat...i grew up around water and boats. Always a dream to experience this beauty.
What are these engines, it sounds mean!! I saw the show back in the day, this boat was my hero!
GM V8, 9.1 litres I think
Cool :-) Brings back good memories. Just need to find the white Ferrari Testarossa, back then all I wanted was a Scarab and Testarossa. Some things never change :-). Thanks for posting this video, it brightened my day.
I loved the show. And it prompted me to buy a boat. I love the boat . would like more videos of her. Thank you so much. York pa
I love a scarab ... in the past I used to own a 30 foot scarab panther with bb twins excellent boat handles great lakes very well I sold it and never should have now finding another one in good shape is like looking for a pin and a hay pile
That boat is special to my favorite tv show glad to see her
Such a beautiful thing! I've wanted this Wellcraft since I was 9! I had three of the Monogram model kits. I LOVE the colors and the sound of those twin Mercury V-8s!
Those a big block chevy, not mercury. 1000 hp a piece, that’s how you get away from the coast gard back in the day.
Well now you need the most important Crockett accessory, a pet alligator!
Wrong boat.
Love to see the great lakes being represented by a sweet offshore boat!!!
Need some Jan Hammer music😀
Need Phil Collins music
“Ross Ballard Voices” would be perfect 👍 😅
I'd actually done some engine work on this boat in the eighties.l believe there used to be a brass plate on the dashboard dedicating Don Johnson.
Loved that show...the opening was the best opening in TV (maybe along with the old Hawaii Five O)...I was in a bar one night chasing skirts and had on my white linen pants and my pastel tee and a girl walked up to me and said I looked like Don Johnson....made my decade...lol.
Cobb Knobbler You and me both. I was expecting Steve to say that
I spent 25 years boating on Lake Michigan with my parents. Our favorite boat was our 4 Th it was a 42 foot Christ Craft with twin 283 motors. It wasn’t very fast but it was a beauty!! It was very sea worthy.
I love that you let us hear the real thing. V power
I agree, it's a classic! And it was as good to drive as it is to look at - a truly amazing machine and a real privilege to have the opportunity.
Wellcraft went bankrupt a number of years ago. Pretty sure there hasn't been a Scarab of any sort made in a decade or more.

Awesome to see the boat run sounds amazing

That sound is awesome!
thanks for the ride. I have a 85 imp 310. (old girl 2)! that Scarab is a monster though! lol. what a beautiful boat!
You're welcome - thanks for coming along! :)
omg WOW , the speed if that thing, my heart was pounding , i felt like i was actually on the boat , i loved it , always been a miami vice fan lol .
My guess is that it could hit 75 at tops. Stock 38 foot boat with twins is not a speedster compared to real off shore boats with racing engines.

I could just feel the fuel being sucked up lol. fab looking boat guys. maybe next time we need some miami vice music.
"Stupid grin time'' doesn't matter boats, cars, planes big American piston engines sound fantasic either at idle or at full chat. Bloody awesome I bet that would interesting to steer in chop what those wrist lol.😉 nice job nick 👍👍
That sounds sooo good!! Nice boat. I watched that show all the time as a kid
Thanks for Posting!! That was a nice ride...really enjoyed it!
I always loved the Scarab KV38 & especially the one used one Miami Vice.
Love the boat but what the hell is the cat named Jaws in the hoist with four drives at 1:35 in the video ?
Whatever it is - it's a beast!
the ORIGINAL cigarette boat. to which all others were compared against. thank you. a definate thumbs up
No tge origional cigarette was the Cigarette, I wish people would stop calling all go fast boats cigarettes! donnAenow will roll in his grave

That looks like some good old fashioned boating! Wow!!
Best show ever. Michael Mann needs to rebirth the show.
Remakes suck dude.
Vin Disel is working on an reboot for next year for NBC Universal/Comcast...
South beach Miami Totally agree..
That was the boat back in the day. One of my faves...it's a shame it's slow compared to today's step bottom, V bottom boats. In the 80's, 80mph was killer fast. And still is on water.
Now days a triple nickel step bottom cigarette runs almost 90.
Great video!
Big fan of the show would love to ride in that
Out on Lake Wawasee in Indiana I saw a Scarab racing a Bass boat! The bass boat won, it was out of the water with the prop being the only thing in the water, it had a 250hp and back then it was a expensive engine! But the expensive boats would race every weekend!
Bass boats are fast on flat water. Put them both in 5' seas and see which one is faster then. 😎
Love the lumpy cams!! No rebuild should every be without them!!
nothing better than a BIG CAM V8 marine engine !
Good job guys, I like that boat.
The sound is amazing.
Has to be in Miami for the right look running along the beach.
I've got a Scarab and her name is Vice
Drivin' on Lake Erie at speed - it's so nice
She's a good old worker and a good old pal
We go over 50 flying' past that Erie Canal
(from the old work song - Low Bridge, about a mule pulling a barge on the Lake Erie's canal )
How much did these boats go for at auction when NBC Universal or whomever some them?
You know I call you Crocket but I never knew you were actually on the boat!!!! That's where I live, and you were here!!!!!!!!! OH IO
Been to that boat launch a hundred times.
Don’t remember Sonny’s boat sounding like that! Pretty brave Standing without holding on going that fast.
Satch Mahoney that scarab originally had twin 440s
I loved Miami Vice also! I didn't know the boat was there on the lake, I would have tried to find it, I lived in Sandusky. That’s got to be the best sounding boat ever !
I watched this a year ago coz I’m a Miami vice fan like loads on here and since watched your other vids. Didn’t actually realise til now you’re on the boat!😵😎
It was the trip of a lifetime!
AQUAHOLIC amazing Paul absolutely fab!
Sir, your videos are awesome. Keep it up!
Perfect shifter throttle layout.
Captain should have a bandanna, sunburn will smaet.
babying the throttle to save her motor for another day. on miami vice she got well used, they always had the hammer down coming out of the water. nice boat
Which one of them is Tubbs again ? I can't remember.
Where is the boat now? Just awesome to see it on the water again...the Miami Vice theme was playing in my mind when you really driving this boat...
I've no idea. It was sold shortly after this video was made, which was back in 2012 I think
I made a 56 inch replica RC boat with two 26 cc weedeater engines in it back in the early 2000. Has a guy lay up a fiberglass hull, painted it the same colors and everything. wound up selling it because I had no where to store it but had several hours of fun running it before that. That noise is fantastic as is the size of those carb covers?
That's a dirty dirty sound I want more of this💪🇬🇧👍
Isn't it though? 😎
This boat need to live in the city it was born in! MIAMI!! Who wouldn’t love to see this coming threw Government Cut!!!
Hey, it be kinnda cool to do a challenge on a boat you know
I grew up in South Florida in the 80s and That' boat is just cool IMO Back the they couldn't make them long enough or loud enough to meet the demand you never knew what you would see running around the water All the Cocaine Cowboys had them it was a blast to go bar hopping by boat to see what else was tied up to the dock

I like the mellow cruise but I want to smash the throttle and hear that thing really scream.
Nice !! I wish I had a boat. I'd be using it all year round. Lol! Where's the palm tree's this doesn't look like Florida?
I don't know where this boat is kept, but when you make ripples in that water my pond gets ripples..lol
Where's the music? Lol. Love seeing this. Thanks for sharing this
And the colour still holds its place today-- Awesome--
The original MV boat was a Chris Craft 39 scorpion shortly after came this model. However it might be one used for the show? If that’s what the title meant.
It was actually a 390 Stinger :)
Is the boat still on Catawba island?
Keep your eyes on anything illegal going on
84 Chris Stinger 39X was the the first
I used to own a 16' cedar strip canvas canoe hand-manufactured by the Ojibway Indian tribe in Canada that sounded EXACTLY like this ---- ah .... paddling memories

We need to see "smugglers blues" at haulover outlet!!
Should have worn the miami vice outfits blazer and all that crocket wore and had the theme song playing
THIS BOAT BELONGS BACK IN miami!
You should've bought it then
Yeah but it will last a lot longer in fresh water 😀
What a sound at idle
A "classic" offshore boat!
Great video!
Love this boat!!! I thought the original Miami Vice boat was the Chris Craft Stinger though?
The first boat in Season One was, this was from Season Two. But it is an original Miami Vice boat.
I would be in heaven riding in this boat!! It’s truly a work of art!
That looks like up north. Is that Florida or possibly Michigan?
Lake Eire, Ohio

I thought the boat from Calderone return had a big clear wrap around windshield
That was the Chris Craft Stinger from Season One
Had it as an RC model when i was younger. Length approx 1m (= 3ft).
they shot the original movie in our office. There are scenes of them Sony following the girl into the bathroom, the Captain's office, and when they came to pickup the guy at the end of the movie. All in our Office. Also they shot the river scenes just across the street and 2 of our ships are in that shot.
Awesome! That's quite a claim to fame..! :)
So cool!
We I can feel it coming in the air tonight
