Why bands can't afford to go on tour anymore

- I had a really interesting conversation with my friend, Sara McDonald, who runs an 18-piece big band called The NYChillharmonic, about the financials of touring. She has also worked for about a decade as an artist manager for other bands so she is really quite an expert in this field. She offers some great advice while generously sharing all of the details of her income and expenses on the road.

Thanks for engaging me in such a thoughtful and important conversation! Love chatting with you
Thank you and Gracie for sharing this great video, best wishes to you both.
You're the best!
Best talks about what it’s like to tour/do the thing! Sara is amazing, and really appreciate the deep convos y’all were having!
I agree, she is amazing! I’m so happy you liked the interview!
@@GracieTerzian As a fellow band leader, I know/feel a lot about what Sara's going through. I run a video game funk-fusion band that's usually 7-9 members in size, so this was super helpful to get a clearer idea on what it takes for larger groups to get out there! Thanks for making this happen :D
Wow, very impressive to get these insights. All the necessary energy, dedication and money. I had no idea. Thanks for the nice and interesting interview Gracie and credits to Sarah for doing this great job🌹🌹
So glad you enjoyed it, Hans! :)
Spotted you singing backing vocals on one of the NYChill youtube vids. Good to introduce a band I had no knowledge of.
Hehe yes! I had a lot of fun singing background vox for NYChill!!
This video is proof positive that Gracie has some of the best and most useful content on YT.
I once had dreams of touring but now I know better. Thanks for showing us the harsh reality of the situation!
Your work is highly appreciated! 👍👍
Aw thank you so much! If you tour with a much smaller band it won’t be as hard. But yeah.. it’s still hard. And I think it’s nice for bands to realize they’re not alone if they’re struggling to just break even on the road.
Thank you for the post. Reality is quite a helpful tool to help us live a fantasy!
thanks for watching!
Great interview, so informative 😮😊
So happy you enjoyed it!
Great talk. A real eye opener
Thank you!
Great job, Gracie. Two awesome, intelligent, talented and energetic women, passionate about their art. Great insight into touring which I had no concept of. Thanks!
Here's hoping the big time is just around the corner.
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the talk. :) Thanks for watching & the nice comment
Lovely ladies in navy blue. I follow you both on Bandcamp.
Aw thanks so much! It’s appreciated
Adam Neely had a fascinating video on this topic too.
For a while there was this idea that touring was how bands made their money, but now I'm not sure how true that ever was. Some bands have to make a profit at some point, but I wonder at what level and what factors make that possible exactly.
Yeah I think bands start making a ton of money when they’re playing really big shows as the headliner (and not as an opener.. even openers for huge artists playing massive stadiums don’t make a ton of $$ usually). But before getting to that place you could make a decent profit if you tour by yourself or with a small sized band and keep your costs low. But you have to be playing shows that sell lots of tickets consistently to be making any money. I used to go on small tours and I would usually break even because I’d go with just myself or bring one other person and we’d “rough” it staying with friends, cheap hotels, etc. But we basically always covered our costs, food, etc. But the music wasn’t as good as if I had brought my whole band. So it’s a trade off.
I’ll have to check Adam’s video out about this topic. Also, fun fact, Adam has played with The NYChillharmonic for many shows/tours over the years. It’s a small world! 😄
Great interview, great questions and very thought provoking. I am only learning about the low incomes artists are earning from multiple streams online.
So glad you enjoyed it! Yes it’s hard to make $ these days in music…
Music is a fantastic hobby and a verry difficult profession.
Have a wonderful day,
Lou
I wish it weren’t the case, but it’s true..
Very interesting interview.. Nice job Gracie and Sara
Thanks! Very glad you liked it :)
This is really great. Pre Covid I was going to do a small tour and OK with losing $30,000 . Running the numbers in 2022 for a 2023 tour I was looking at losing $80,000 + so not really worth it. We can make a chapy fun horror film for that
It's totally insane!!
What an interesting view into the details of the life of a working musician. Sounds tough to make the economics work with so many people.
Glad you enjoyed it!!
You should react to Rascal Flatts, Things That Matter.
So I did a deep dive on this lady and her band- does she have any profitable projects? Is she starving or what’s up?
Did you watch the whole video? It basically explains this is detail
Lol this lady is well fed. Sometimes the band makes money sometimes it doesn’t. Like all musicians I have other work outside of just touring. As Gracie said, that info is in the video!
Yeah, the "deep dive" obviously didn't include watching the entire video. If they had, they would've seen what a powerhouse this person is. Despite the negative numbers quoted and very interesting insights into the industry, my impression is that she is very successful. Not a very informed comment/question by the original poster.
Gracie Terzian, You're fantastic! Let's be friends and have fun!
