There is not a yes or no to this question. There are intuitive artists who have a seemingly endless creative spirit and productive capability that theory is not necessary technically or generatively; others may brush against it and use it now and again, but not as a major or defining part of their creative repertoire; others, still, might need theory as a major source for generating whatever is produced. The same applies to composing a song-it matters not whether the lyrics precede the melody, or vice versa, or if they are done together-it will depend. And there is no right or wrong, only individual preference, in composing music with lyrics.

Excellent interview. good advice to branch out. So many artists sound the same over and over no matter how talented. As for theory, that's like asking does learning the alphabet ruin your ability to spell. I was stuck until I learned some theory. people who don't know theory, and who are really good artists, actually know theory, they just don't know they know it, lol.

Nice. I got to the stage where I'm finding all the piano notes on the guitar. Beyond progressions. You can't escape intervals. I think theory can be stimulating and help you create different things. I don't write lyrics. One day I might still put a collection of melodies together. Really nice music, congrats.

Yes same - I was resistant to it at first because intuition got me pretty far - but at some point you have to expand your toolkit :)

yes and no. it always depends on the person. some people need the structure and will stay within it, and some people need to be free and figure out what works and doesn't as they go.
no right or wrong answer, pros and cons to both.

Thanks! Hey Gracie....I have a question maybe you can help me with. What does it mean when there is a series of 4 1/8 notes but only the first of the series is noted and the other three are just blank stems? Thanks Curtis

As a Blues guitarist I’ve heard this over and over again through the years. As far as I’m concerned that’s just a load of BS. If you can play with musicality, “with soul” in the blues scene, you can still do so with knowledge of music theory and solid technique. In fact I’d say even more so because your fingers know where to go to capture the Feeling your tryin to convey.
I wish I had gotten into theory and good technique a lot sooner.
    Just my opinion.

Nope. It’s theory. Plus it’s fun to break rules.

Absolutely not! In fact, knowing music theory allows one to take what they’re trying to convey to the listener and deliver it with full conviction. Knowing music theory opens so many doors that allow the creative aspect of music to flow unimpeded and touch ones emotional mind, heart and soul.

A mostly agree by with some people as some points in the journey it could put them into a box and make them question now artistic integrity. Comparing oneself to the millions of hours of music recorded in the past can sometimes be daunting.
But I do think learning theory is net positive.

I ❤ music theory and related subjects-like counterpoint. However, it don’t make you no composer. It’s a tool for musicians; both composers AND players. Higher levels of theory deal with philosophy, engaging both mechanics and what the fuck IS music anyway-beyond the sound sculpture.
