Don't you love that "you only get 1 or 2 shots" to put the wind up you! Went with Matt a few years ago & learned heaps about NZ fishing after having fished there by myself many many times, esp. mending the line to get a clean drift which I almost never have to do over here in Oz in our slower streams. I'm an experienced caster but just like he said, the first fish we aimed at was huge and everything with my casting went to the sh*t! Later hooked my biggest brown ever, but he skunked me and spat the fly in 3 secs flat after tearing downstream across the pool. Used Matt's tips the next day and landed two cracking rainbows. NZ is epic, can't wait to get back across the ditch when this Covid crap is done.
Tasmania, & the Snowy Mountains and New England regions of NSW best for trout. But nowhere near as good as NZ. But there are much more interesting species to chase on fly in Oz - Murray Cod, Aussie Bass, Barramundi, many saltwater species. See here from our guiding page for some examples - facebook.com/FlyFishArmidale
My dad was fly fishing in Montana just a few days ago and you are right, the scenery is very similar. He caught a fish and I’m so glad you were able to have success as well! Enjoyed the video!
That was epic! Very well filmed and instructor was brilliant. It's summer here in New Zealand at the mo. Taking the family camping next week, will be packing my fly rod & fishing a river in the North Island.
That was fun to watch and I learned a lot of fishing and fly fishing in the south island of New Zealand. I will for sure check out the Kia Kit that you advertised. Thanks! :-D
@@AlexanderAyling Awesome man. Love your Spain/South America content too.. Definitely similar interests. I split my time between here and Spain. I live here in NZ and have been following your videos for years. Enjoy your day
You have followed (and found) your bliss. Thanks for sharing and...by-the-way...we have reserved one of the kits which will live on our sailboat in the Salish Sea1 :-) Cheers
I’m new to yr channel but just want to say I love it 👍👍 very enjoyable. Me and the wife love trout fishing we do a lot from our boat here in Rotorua. I do a bit of fly fishing myself when I can, awesome video tho keep up the great work. 👍👍
Great video. Good tips from your guide and a beautiful location. I’m visiting NZ next year and hope to get a couple of days fishing. Which river were you fishing and what was the access point for the walk in? Also do you know what length and line weight the rod was. I’m thinking of taking a 9’ 5 weight. Thanks for sharing. 🙂👍
I will be traveling NZ next year. Locals, have some good fishing spot I should be aware? Any good fishing store? South island is better to find good mountain river? Any adivce is welcome.
Just a question; is fly fishing the only form of fishing allowed on the south island? Do fly fishing guides accept guiding anglers using more conventional tackle?
3:50 "the wilderness is pretty much stress free..." Me, looking at the tall grass: ooh, no ticks carrying diseases then? Sweet! Alex: "there's nothing here that can kill you..." Me: wait. That escalated quickly! I guess not everyone is from a country like the Netherlands, where apex predators have been extinct for centuries!
Nice of your guide to walk us through the basics. No 1st time NZ FFer should go w/out first having a day or two with a association member guide. My nephew, who is a Montana FF guide, and I did well free lancing after a 2 day tutorial on spring creeks and freestone streams by a really good guide. .
Aotearooa is one land separated by water only, your comment of one island over another is the most ignorant thing I've ever heard, thank god our borders are closed
@@denisetewhata8867 Well Denise that's a pretty grumpy reply to someone's simple opinion. I've lived on both islands and there are positives and negatives for both. I've chosen to live in the south because it suits my lifestyle. Does this mean you'll hammer me too? And tell us, where is the Aotearooa you speak of? New spelling huh? Your reaction is what turns people off!
Bit late to comment seeing this vid is 3 years old. But you are not ON the South Island. If I come to America, I am not ON America, I am IN America. OK so US is a big continent. The South Island of NZ is as big as England. When you visit the UK, are you ON England? No, you are IN it. If you are saying ON because the South Island is an island, Australia is an island too. When you visit Australia, are you ON Australia? Your title should read "how to fish in the South Island" So yes, it does drive us Kiwis nuts when people say they are ON the South Island or the North Island. Thanks
The way you fish South Island New Zealand is you bring the military in and you arrest every politician judge and political appointee in the government take them out to shark infested waters and kick them out of the boat
Great vid Alex, was pleasure taking you out for the day!
Cheers Matt!! We will have to do some more adventures together. 👍🏽
NZ is your jam!
You seem so happy and peaceful!
Thank you! I love it here :)

That was a fun watch. Good work getting your SI fish. Will be keeping an eye out for some more fly fishing adventures.

Very cool!
A very successful day. That Kea kit looks handy....so hard to find waterproof first aid, survival kits. Great idea

Cheers Mate!

That looks like the Motatapu River. I drove right past and fished the Matukituki instead! Next time. I agree it looks like Montana.
Great video! So many great spots in NZ
For sure! More on the way

Beautiful stuff man! Thanks!

Good video, shows just how much it takes to catch a bloody trout in NZ!
15 ft leaders?!?

Yeah it’s got a feel to it for sure
Awesome video
Cheers!
Great clip.
Awesome! Is headed toward glendhu infront of roy’s peak?
Hey Alex, what river was this one?
Not sure - down near Wanaka
Great video. Good tips from your guide and a beautiful location. I’m visiting NZ next year and hope to get a couple of days fishing. 9’ 6 weight is what I used - I honestly don’t remember the name of the river or the access point. It was near Wanaka
Thanks
Nice! 😎👌😍

Great fish! What pants are you wearing? Those look perfect for fishing.
Also noticed you were using wet suit socks and light boots. Much better than waders.
If it’s full summer you can get away with it, most of the time I prefer waders
I would never get Davis back. He would never leave that stream🤣
Which river is featured?
Thanks
Was that fishing the Ahuriri river?
nah i wouldn't think so
Just a question; is fly fishing the only form of fishing allowed on the south island? Do fly fishing guides accept guiding anglers using more conventional tackle?
Plenty of spots are open to conventional fishing, only some rivers and areas are fly fishing only
May 2021? I didn't know New Zealand was open for visitors. I wonder what was involved in getting there.
I’m a citizen and moved back to live in NZ
Shout out to my home province of Alberta!
Love it up there!!! 🙌🏼 Bow River
I love Wanaka
Isn’t is such a cool corner of NZ?
♥️

and the good thing is theres no bears in NZ 😊
Definitely a bonus when out in the bush!
I wish someday you would do a video with Marko like FaceTime.
For an avid fly fisherman, that hand position on those fish pics looks pretty amateur! 😉Nice vid and tight lines though.
why did you kiss the fish🤭
Gratitude :)
Reel way to slow . Got to reel em in fast or they will get off
I like South Island of NZ more than North Island.

How dislike his video

The guide's voice was irritating. They are always so cocky and know-it-alls.
hey don't be mean to Australians
he didn't want you to turn your hearing aid on............. you ask a question, you get an answer..... what are you moaning about
