    I like your videos but how about upgrading to a 1080p camera, so we can see the specimens better.

    Recently retired, I have become a novice collector. My new found enthusiasm for the hobby has been fueled by videos you and other experienced rock hounds have produced. Thank you for taking the time to share your advice, skills and knowledge about collecting minerals and gems. So powerful are your videos, you have inspired me to schedule a trip to Ontario where I hope to visit some of the places you have suggested. Michael, I would like to invite you to come and do some collecting south of the border. I would enjoy showing you some of the best water clear quartz crystal collecting sites to be found anywhere. Our club, the T Town Rock Hounds, would be thrilled to have you come to Tulsa and give a presentation. If I have the chance to meet you in person while I'm in Ontario, I would like to buy signed copies of your books. BTW...You have a standing offer to come collecting down here, just message me on Facebook. Meanwhile, keep the videos coming.

    Just subbed - I love this channel. The mystery mineral you’re holding at 9:15, I’m going to go out on a limb here and call it andalusite. The areas you go to for mineral collecting are certainly very interesting, as there are actual rocky, quarry-like sites you can go to. I live in Virginia, and it is boring me to tears, geologically speaking. If there are sites here, they are on private land where the owner is hollering ‘ Get off my land.’, or they are mines that used to operate in colonial times, and now they are buried under trees and vegetation. Still, I rockhound whenever I can .

    • @Caver461
      @Caver461  6 років тому

      Sometimes the old mines are great because even though they strip the seam or vein of what they were looking for there is other stuff there that was of little value at the time, but today it might be a real prize. Thanks for subbing.

    I think the mystery rock is a nice piece of Fluororichterite. Great video and thanks for sharing your collection.

    Without having read the other replies and since I am only 5 years late seeing this video, I suspect the mineral specimen you refer to beginning @9:10 is Titanite from Tory Hill ?
    PS> I grew up on the Blakely property (Blakely Fluorite Mine, Madoc) and have a really nice 2 inch Cube that I found in the early 1970's.

    Great video, hoping one day I can find something nice. I'm still trying to figure out where I can do some digging in terms of laws prohibiting digging in state parks, federal land, national park, etc etc. Could you please point me in general in what type of land can I do some digging. I want to collect in Virginia, is there any type o land that I will able to dig?. I've been doing research but is still not clear where I can actually dig for crystal!!!. Thanks for your video!!!

    i think that other guy was right with the grey flat crystals being fluororichterite it occurs in carbonate veins in amphibolites and ultramaffic rocks most good examples came from ontario that i saw. your large one is amazing! 5-6 hardness there is a essonville occurrence in Wilberforce ontario where its in gniss and limestone i heard its in humbolt California too! nice to know some is down here too thanks for the fun stuff

    What is the green specimen at point 9:48 in the video? I found a small example of something that looks like that. Am coming back to Niagara Falls during last week of May and staying most of June. I hope to get out and scratch around for crystals. Having trouble getting access though. There was a quarry but since they are still working it they said they don't allow rockhounding.

    • @dalealyea6019
      @dalealyea6019 7 років тому

      Like you I will be in the vicinity of Niagara Falls and Bancroft Ontario the 2nd week of June...Watching Caver461's videos is a way to learn what, where and how. In his videos, Michael Gordon will often tell you the location where he and his friend are collecting in the video. By paying attention to the surrounding scenery in the video you may be able to get to almost the exact spot where he collected a nice specimen. Also tess99991 has great videos about collecting in locations around Ontario. Good luck...

    Well, I had a husband but he didn't mind at all. It does seem most hounds are guys, but I've been picking rocks off the ground since I was 5. Should have been a geologist. But I teach myself what I can and read a lot. And watch channels like yours. Are you self taught?
    p.s. UA-cam won't let me reply directly to you.

    Hey, nice intermediary video! Just curious when you'll be making your foray to the Thunder Bay area, I live in Thunder Bay, and my brother and I have been rock hounding for a few years now. Possible to divulge any details about that kunzite pegmatite? Is it up hwy 588?

      It's up past the power plant heading north around Nippising.

    • @thirstfast1025
      @thirstfast1025 7 років тому

      Hahaha!!! That's too funny! Since I watched this video, I've been looking into pegmatites with spodumene that just so happen to be right by a power plant north of Nipigon (1hour east of Thunder Bay)!! Crystals up to 5ft, though not kunzite. Blue to purple apatite, but tiny. Jean lake and Georgia lake occurrences. Also Barbara lk, Carrot lk, and a list of others. Quite a swarm of peggies tho!! Aparently some beryl, but greenish yellow, and from what I understand, not overly appealing.

    • @thirstfast1025
      @thirstfast1025 7 років тому

      Lol, okay I looked closer to where you're talking about, let's see how close I got with my limited powers of deduction: Turn onto Beatty Rd at Nipissing town office, onto Power Plant Rd, following the South River for ~1km until you get to a group of excavations south of the road?

    • @Caver461
      @Caver461  7 років тому

      This is one of the rare earth pegmatite locations in the coming book. There are a couple off the Gorge Creek Road, all within a few kilometes.
      1) 1) Head north from Nipissing along Highway 11 to the Nipissing Power
      Plant. 950 meters past the power plant there is a rightward leading road (Gorge Creek Road).
      2) 2) Follow the rightward leading road to where it forks 3.8 kilometers
      further on.
      3) 3) Go right at the fork and follow the road for 2.2 kilometers to another
      fork.
      4) 4) Stay left at the fork and follow the road for another 3.2
      kilometers to where a track crosses over the road.
      5) 5) Turn right onto the track and follow it for 1 kilometer to its terminus
      up against a swamp. You’ll find yourself in the vicinity of the pegmatite.

    (Still looking for information about rockhounding groups in Ontario, while google works, I think it's better to ask an expert)
    Also, which book of yours do you recommend for someone new to rockhounding and only being able to travel about an hour or so outside of the GTA (mississauga/oakville).
    Thanks!

      IntrospectiveGalaxy . The Walker mineralogical club is based in TO! Not much in the way of rockhounding around the GTA even a hour outside.
