I realized that John did a service to the family of the little girls by letting them think that he was the one who killed the little girls so that they don't realize that they welcomed the killer into their home and feel the guilt of that.

This is one of the most touching movies I have ever watched, it gets me every time. I hope Mary gets some much needed sleep after this one :)
You know a villain is top teir when you physically feel real hatred toward them, and I have never truly HATED a fictional character as much as I hate Percy Wetmore. Fantastic writing and performance.
Wild Bill is just a rabid dog. He's awful, but not humany enough to really hate.
Percy is truly repulsive.
Other characters that rank up there are Joffrey in "Game of Thrones" and the businessman in the Korean movie "Train to Busan" (one of the best zombie movies in its genre)

Coffey may be much older than he appears, given the longevity he gave to Paul & Mr Jingles. He has scars on his body when he rolls over, suggesting he may have been around during slavery in the 1800s.

Michael Clarke Duncan was robbed of the academy award for this one. Michael Caine was great in Cider House Rules for sure, but Michael’s performance was one of the most iconic and definitive displays of acting that has ever graced the screen. 22 years later, and nobody remembers Cider House Rules, but everybody remembers the gentle giant of The Green Mile. It such a shame he never really got the recognition he deserved even though he was easily the most memorable part of practically every project he touched.
And that is why 'The Academy' has long been out of touch with reality. Politics and the buddy system have ruled there long enough, and it's a shame. And I've only 'seen' this movie through reactions (the greatest movie I've never seen) and even this idiot can tell that his performance was legendary.
The 1999 Oscars were unusually competitive, especially that category. Everyone gave a great performance but I think Caine (whose movie was dull as dirt) had the "might be nearing the end of his career" sympathy vote going for him. To his credit, he spent a good amount of his acceptance speech praising every single other nominee. He was truly a class act.

Old Paul is the character actor Dabbs Greer. He was in lots of TV shows and movies during his career. He was a scene stealer in everything I've seen him in, a very good and memorable actor.
He was the minister in Little House on The Praire series
I've watched the movie a lot... I can't even say a number of times... but every time... I cry, every time... I feel the pain. The actors are so good at their roles.. it's unbelievable.
If you didn't cry watching this movie, then you aren't human. I don't know of anyone who has watched this movie and didn't get to the end emotionally destroyed and with red eyes. It is perhaps one of the very few movies I would consider to be perfect and without any criticisms whatsoever. Even the actor who plays Percy, you want to hate him so much, and that's precisely what he was supposed to evoke from the audience. They all did their parts brilliantly, and I hold the movie dear to me. I can't even watch a person react to this movie without tearing up again. :)

One of the best movies ever made. The filming the camera angles the lighting the color grade and the acting from every character was just so on point. Definitely makes me tear up at the end every time

Definitely one of the greatest movies. I felt all these emotions long before the movie, from the books and didn't think at that time that there will be a movie, that will manage to catch a lot from the story and all these emotions.
The thing that always strikes me is the depth of character. Percy is a bit one-note (he's allowed to be, he's an antagonist) but everyone else has at minimum two sides to them: Paul is inherently good, but he's also clever, and with a snarky, almost rebellious streak. Brutal is obviously the Tank of the party, but he's got a gentle sweetness and a good humor that so delightfully rounds him out. Del is a bit off his rocker, but when he says "You're a good man, I wish I met you guys earlier" you can tell he's keenly aware of his life and he sincerely regrets his actions. Warden Hal could have been a straight-laced by-the-book figure (another possible antagonist) but his heart is being shattered by his wife's illness and the movie is not only not afraid to show that, it purposefully pivots the narrative around it.
Everything about this movie is just so damned clever. It's a masterpiece, and one of the greatest fictional tragedies humanity has ever produced.
Your reaction to when John says, "I'm tired of people being ugly to each other." is just the most heart wrenching one I've ever seen among reactions to this film on UA-cam. You clearly have a hug heart.
I watched this movie in a theatre with a bunch of hormone-raging young adults yelling and having a good time. In the end, there was dead silence and you could hear a pin drop. It's one of only 2 times that I personally experienced a movie emotionally affecting an entire theatre. The other movie was "The Color Purple" which you must eventually watch.
I never saw Color Purple in theaters, but it's up there with "the movies that always make me cry" along with the Green Mile, Forrest Gump and Titanic.
The Color Purple is a MUST watch.

I had this experience with Avengers Infinity War and End game. Absolute silence and then all you could hear was people trying to silently empty their noses because everyone in the cinema was crying.

Don't apologize for having trouble finding words after this, you're reaction spoke volumes. A beautiful reaction to a beautiful film, a true masterpiece. Soak it all in then find something to de-stress with. Get over the grief but not the sentiment of John Coffey. It's a necessary reminder that there is a lot of evil in this world, we have to watch for it and help each other through it. I think this is the best reaction I have seen you do. You truly let your guard down and experienced the fullness of the emotional swings in this one. Great job.

The fact that Michael Clarke Duncan didn't win the Oscar for this for best supporting actor is a joke.
I am a senior citizen now. "We all owe a death. There are no exceptions." means a great deal to me these days. It's best to try not to fear death. Just try to live your best life, and hope that those around you, who pass away, have lived theirs. Years ago, when my father was dying, at 86 years old, he told me, "I don't want you to be sad, Eric. I've had a good life." Those words always meant everything to me, and this movie reminds me of that. I've seen The Green Mile a dozen times, and I watch every reaction video to it also. I cry every time. Thanks, Mary, you're the best!

This movie is so simple... yet it's one of the most powerful movies ever. I cried so hard when I watched this, and I cry every time I just watch someone react to it. I feel like there are two parts that would make a good baseline test for potential friends if this movie came up in a discussion. 1: "Did you hate Percy?" and 2: "Did you cry at the end?" If their answer isn't "Yes" to both I honestly don't know if I could even bother trying to be friends with that person. I just feel like we wouldn't be compatible.
The movie was "Top Hat" (1935), co-starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. This is an excellent musical. The song in the film is "Cheek to Cheek".
Mary, you gotta watch 'Top Hat', even if you can't post a reaction because it's a musical.

"YES!!!, but don't get aggressive" when Percy got hit. It put pride and light heartiness to this movie. You could tell you were angry going into that scene.
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this film, or how much I know all the scenes inside out... That scene of John talking about how ugly people can be to each other gets me every single time. I know the scene is coming but every time it makes me catch my breath and then I sob huge tears. This film is amazing.

Actually yes, he is. They have the same initials, both cure illness, both raise others from the dead, both are unjustly executed by the state. It's not the main point of the movie but it's more than a coincidence.
Actually, Steven King said he wanted to do a Christ story in regard to this, so it's very intentional.

I saw this in the theater without knowing what it was about. It took my by surprise and I definitely did cry. Hard to believe this movie is 22 years old. it feels timeless.

I'm surprised to never see in the comments for this movie how John Coffey is very obviously a Christ-like figure, a Jesus analogue, if you will. Not just because he could heal and perform miracles but, even more importantly, because he is sacrificed while being innocent, as expiation for others and while being hated and misunderstood by many.
Yep. And if people cried for the original J.C. like we did for this J.C., the world would be a different place.

How fitting this premieres as Mary passes the 50k subscriber mark, so all the more people get to discovery her. I know of nobody who doesn't cry during this movie. Duncan should have gotten an award.
I cry...every time I see it, just like now. And it broke my heart when Micheal Duncan Clark passed away. Tom Hanks was invited and gave the Eulogy at his funeral.

I’m a 50 year old man next month, and I cry every time I watch this film and with every reactor. I’ve seen the film dozens of times, and I’ve watched like 5 reactions to this in the past two days and cried every time. 😂 Loved your reaction, btw. You’re quickly becoming one of my new favorite reactors. I appreciate how you recognize and point out the complexities of the situations, characters, moral dilemmas, etc. You keep it real when our heroes are flawed, like V.
So, I was trying to think of other films that always make me cry that you would like, and “A League Of Their Own” came to mind. It’s a fun, dramatic comedy based on the true story about the women’s baseball league during WW2, while men’s baseball was shut down. And, coincidentally, it stars Tom Hanks, along with a **ton** of other female actors who you will recognize. Gina Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, Lori Petty (maybe you don’t know her😆). I won’t give away the ending, but those types of endings make me cry every time.
I’m a 68 yr. old man and I cry every time I see this movie or reaction. We could use a lot more gentle souls like him in the world.
The actor is Graham Greene. He plays the first prisoner to be executed. Greene is an established actor who has an impressive list of film and TV roles. Yes, he was in "Dances with Wolves". Greene is an indigenous actor of Oneida First Nation's peoples. The Stephen King novel gives a more detailed backstory of his character Arlen Bitterbuck and also of Cajun prisoner Eduard Delacroix. You are correct about John Coffey. Stephen King intentionally portrays John as a Christ-like figure. There are several religious symbols in the film: The guards' desk and the large, cathedral-like windows with the bright light flowing over the green mile, the pain he takes from Del during the botched execution, John recognizing the constellations in the night sky, the halo from the film projector light over John's head. The lawyer says there was no evidence of John's existence before his arrest. "It was as if he fell from the sky."
The guards were not able to stop Del's execution. It's not that they did not want to.

"Yes!...I mean, don't get aggressive..." Wonderful, honest human reaction, Mary, to Percy's being gleefully ugly to Del. ("Percy Wetmore" What an incredibly descriptive character name.) This movie, more than all but a few others, tweaks the emotions of a sensitive viewer back and forth the spectrum from rage to tears, and makes you feel wonderful (and drained) afterwards for allowing those emotions free rein. It draws out our ability to empathize due to its subject matter, its pacing, and the great performances by all involved. This is why you'll find it on nearly every reactor's list of movies. It is also a touchstone for revealing the inmost heart of a sensitive viewer. You are a good person, Mary. Keep up the good work.
"Did you cry when you watched this movie?" - Yes. And I cried when I watched it a second, third and fourth time. Then I cried when this react channel watched it. And that react channel watched it. I cry when I think of this. John Coffee is what every human on the face of the earth dreams of happening and Paul is what ever human on the earth should be. This movie is #2 in my list of movies that make me cry but I will watch it every time anyway.

Michael Clarke Duncan was just a gift, both in this film and in his far too short life. And yes, I can’t watch this film without tears. The entire cast did an excellent job with the material, one of Stephen King’s finer creations (and I say this as a genuine admirer, especially of his Dark Tower novels).
Micheal Clark Duncan was a magnificent actor, he played the Angel Giant/John Coffey so amazing.
This movie was so heart and gut wrenching...I always cry watching this movie, it's just the injustice and the feeling of helplessness when seeing an innocent man being put to death, not just any man...Gods great gifts.
In real life Micheal Clark Duncan
was a real gental giant with a pure heart...and a good man.
He was 6 foot 9 gental kind hearted loving Giant.
The Green Mile movie was his first big movie role and it turned him into a world wide mega movie star.
We lost him far too soon and we lost a true legendary Goat.
I truly believe he should have Won an Oscar for this extraordinary role....the Green Mile is a true movie master Piece.

This movie is a wound that never heals. I saw this opening night with my father and the entire audience was crying and on the verge of weeping.

This movie is terrific. Can you believe “The Green Mile” was written by horror genius Stephen King!!! Well, it’s not such a far stretch of belief if you’ve read a lot of his short stories. Anyway, Michael Duncan Clark was so good in this, rest in peace you gentle giant of deep talent.
Mary, I truly enjoyed watching you watch this, just as I enjoy all your other reviews, because it’s a welcome reminder that someone living on another Continent a wide Ocean away can be so likable, funny, empathetic, and a downright wonderful human being. A movie that really moved me when I was about 16 years old, is "Dead Poets Society", it's for me one of the best Robbin Williams movies for me, and this movie changed my life, I highly recommend it, and congratulations on 50,000 subscribers you deserve all the best.Thank you.

A Masterpiece of a movie and a great reaction as always. Someone in chat had mentioned that Michael Jeter's last movie was Open Range. The scene in the hayloft when he reads Charlie's (Kevin Costner) last will and testament is about as powerful a scene as I've ever seen. Both movies have had me sobbing....
Jeter was one of those actors that whenever you see him on screen you know you will get something special. He could be very funny and quirky or he could hit you right between the eyes with touching emotional acting. I miss him, a great actor!

I cry every time I watch it. It's such a powerful story, full of magical realism and lessons on human behavior. It is also simultaneously a study in the human need to punish evil actions and the satisfaction that it can bring while also being an indictment of capital punishment. Your tears started when mine do, when John asks to leave the hood off to not be in the dark. You should watch a joyful film like Bringing Up Baby or even Top Hat to recover.

What John pulled out of the Wardens wife was in fact a Demon. It fought so hard that when John finally pulled it out the force of it shook the house off its foundation.

I was 19 when this movie came out. I can't remember taking my girlfriend to see this.. But now I'm thinking in retrospect how the entire theaters were during John coffee's last moments. Probably not a single dry eye. Mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, teens. This movie gets everyone
I worked with Michael Clarke Duncun on Talladega Nights and he was the nicest guy who spent so much time talking with us and calling out Greg German for making us wait while he rode his bike around set lol! I also used to walk the path at the house he's at in the beginning. I worked with Barry Pepper on 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story.

I love this movie, and I still cry whenever I see it, I even cry when watching movie reactors discover it for the first time, so that was a much needed laugh knowing the heaviness that's coming. He teared up over "Schindler's List" but didn't fully cry. This one got him to actually cry. This one truly gets to everyone.

I watched this movie when I was an A-hole 15 year old and it was totally lost on me. Watched it a few years later as an adult and it blew my mind. It cuts right to the core of me now.

Great reaction. Frank Darabont wrote the screenplay and directed both "The Green Mile" & "The Shawshank Redemption". Stephen King wrote both original stories. Both movies are a masterpiece.
If you DON'T cry, then you have no heart...it's impossible to not cry watching this movie...
Ahh green mile... one of the 3-4 movies that has been able to make an adult me cry... and i have no problem admitting it.

District 9 (2009) - excellent scifi!
I am Sam (2001) - for a good cry :) w/ Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer, and a young Dakota Fanning
Hearts in Atlantis (2001) - feel good drama w/ Anthony Hopkins
Legends of the Fall (1994) - Period drama w/ Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt
Meet Joe Black (1998) - A feel good dramedy romance with Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt... again.
Collateral (2004) - w/ Tom Cruise and Jamie Fox
LA Confidential (1997) - classic noir detective story
Toy Story 3 & 4 (2010 & 2019) - I saw you did the first 2 already, and they only get better :)
The Thin Red Line (1998) - This has a very large and famous ensemble cast. It's a Terrence Malick film so it's leans towards the philosophical, not everyone's cup of tea, but I recommend it nonetheless as it is a beautiful film.
And finally these Wes Anderson movies: The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), The Darjeeling Limited (2007), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). All comedies, he has a delightful unique visual style, highly recommended.
I'm basing these suggestions on what you seemed to have liked up until now. The last two are more aligned with my personal tastes :)
