    The line "Are you real?" gets me every time. Jinx is so far gone she struggles to distinguish reality from hallucination. I'm glad schizophrenia or Alzheimer's doesn't run in my family, because the idea of losing my mind like that is just terrifying.

      Schizophrenia does run in my family, and I've experienced psychosis that resembled schizophrenia a lot and trust me it is the literal worst. To not know what is real, to be terrified every moment of every day. It's horrible. I couldn't tell if the things I saw, felt, or heard were real. I'd sit on the floor feeling the earth twist and tumble like I was about to fall through the floors, the walls pulsated and I heard voices constantly. I nearly checked into a mental hospital after a long time of it. I'm so thankful to have come out of it, but knowing my family history... I have to live with the knowledge that it could happen again. I live in fear that one day it's gonna start up and I won't be able to stop it next time. I still experience low level hallucinations I can ignore most of the time, but occasionally if they start getting to bad, I have to use all of my mental strength to stay calm and hope that it will calm down enough to ignore and wont go all out again. I just wish I knew about it running in the family sooner, I only learned about it running in the family after it happened. I spent a year in psychosis, and my deepest wish is to not experience it again... but I easily could one day.

      One thing i like about this show is that they treat their audience like adults rather than trying to spoon-feed us every detail.
      However, subtitles do help in some scenes so we can more easily gather the context clues.
      Speaking of which, after you watch Episode 8, you should rewatch this episode. Pay close attention to the story that Vi tells Cait about when she and Powder were children, then go back and look at the walls of the home that they are in during Episode 6.

      I actually noticed something about that scene for the first time: when Jinx was left alone after the Firelights took Vi, it was completely silent. Dead silent. For once, Jinx didn't have anything going on in her head. And the absence of hearing voices or having her head filled with 'noise' was probably disconcertingly 'deafening' and surreal. She'd been shocked into temporary lucidity, and was truly alone for the first time in who knows how long. It only lasted a few seconds, but it's very haunting.

    The next episode is gonna be a ride.
    On the council scene, it's interesting, nothing Jayce says is wrong, Heimerdinger was in charge for so long, but the unequallity was still fostered during that period, so the most kind interpretation of it is that he was just blind to the suffering, possibly because he doesn't hink on the same timescale as humans do. On the contrary, Heimerdinger was necessary to keep the human greed of the council in the backgrounds (I don't know if you noticed, but the scene where Jayce made deals, heimer was the only one innocently enjoying the music).

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Рік тому +10

      You're so right!! The power imbalance and corruption has definitely still festered, and perhaps it was because Heimerdinger was unaware..? Change is a good thing, but you also need someone like him to maintain oversight.

    • @peteryang5056
      @peteryang5056 Рік тому +17

      It’s definitely important to have oversight to address corruption, and that’s kind of the problem with Heimerdinger - as Jayce points out, he talks big, but the truth is that he DOESN’T provide that needed oversight. The only thing we see him actually take a stand against is Jayce and Viktor’s research, but he seems completely oblivious to the corruption all around him. Given that he’s by far the oldest member of the Council, and the only one who has been there from day one, it’s not unfair to suggest that Heimer’s inaction over the centuries is directly responsible for the unjust system that is creating the present day crises.

    I saw a comment on the previous video that Victor is motivated by self-preservation. I think mostly he’s been shown to be motivated by a need to make a difference, to grow beyond his ‘insignificant’ background, to help his people. Death is not the big baddy in his mind, its the limit it puts on his ambition. He wants to live so that he can bring the progress of Hextech to the people. So far, all Hextech has done is to improve the life of the already fortunate, growing inequality. As Silco said in episode 4, with Hextech the upside is moving faster beyond the hopes of the undercity to ever catch up.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Рік тому +6

      Absolutely right! He feels that need to accomplish greatness in the best sense of the word. Like you said he aimed to help people but his objective was to help those in need first. Which is a void he hasn’t filled yet. And having a quicker expiration date really messes with his plans. He was one of our favorite arcs in the show. Such a tragic storyline. Yet another character where the saying “The road to hell was paved with good intentions” apply. Thank you for watching ❤️

    • @tarinindell8217
      @tarinindell8217 Рік тому +3

      I mostly agree. But in my mind, his motivation is truly about trying to help people. Yes, he wants recognition ("Do you think my life's ambition was to become an assistant?") but he is always talking about doing good for those in need.
      His motivation changes a bit throughout the season to be more related to self preservation, but we havent really reached that point yet.

    It's a very minor detail, but the shapes and action of some of the mechanical parts of the toy boat are later echoed in the machinery behind the characters in the open space in the Piltover wall.
    And maybe it's just me, but when Viktor is sitting in his chair, contemplating the Hexcore, the line of the crutch above him is strongly reminiscent of a scythe.
    One last thing - if you re-watch the Council voting scene, note how the focus slowly moves from Himerdinger to Jayce being center frame.

  • @RenegadeSamurai
    @RenegadeSamurai Рік тому +16

    Imo the second best scene in Arcane right here....There is not really Jinx standing there, it is the last bit of Powder that was there lurking in Jinx' mind and believing her sister will come back. You can see this also in the way how Mylo and Claggor are shown. Usually she sees them as bizarre and creepy visions, judging her for what she's done. Here they are in a still and calm way, with no effects over their faces, this is how Powder imagines them. It's kinda Powders last cry for her sister and it is just...beautiful and painful at the same moment...The song by Woodkid just multiplies that by 1000!
    Also...Jayce is right with what he says. Heimerdinger has been very passive and like the rest of the council didn't really care about what was happening in the Undercity which is technically the root of all the problems they have to face, but they are still too complacent to realize that. A bit of Lore how Topside and the Undercity work....The Undercity is basically the slums, where the poor people do the shit work nobody wants to do, for example excavating ores and stuff and inhaling poisenous gasses their whole life, and scramble to go by. Topside is just exploiting the people down there, which led to uprisings in the past. Jayce kinda confirms that when he and Victor present Heimerdinger their Hextech gadgets when he says "The workers in the fissures can work FASTER and without Fatigue" It's all about keeping the business rolling, and living off the shoulders from the poor people beneath. This is why I have a hard time feeling any kind of sympathy for people on thetopside, specially the council since they are one of the key reasons all this crap with shimmer etc is happening.

    The thing is, I don't think Heimerdinger *actually* cared for the people. I think he *thought* he did, but in reality he was corrupt/complacent in his own way. It's easy to sympathize with him because he's an adorable fuzzball and in contrast to the rest of the Council seems like a paragon of virtue, but he wasn't. Not really. As Jayce pointed out, Heimerdinger helped found the city of Piltover, he'd been there from the very beginning 200 years prior to when the show takes place, meaning the Undercity became what it is while he was on the Council. The Undercity didn't become like that overnight, and good intentions or not, Heimerdinger did nothing for literally two centuries as Topside exploited the Undercity for their own gain and the Undercity sank lower and lower into the ground (figuratively, but also literally if the game lore is anything to go by).
    The scene in a previous episode where all the Councillors were at the concert has an added layer that a lot of people miss (I definitely missed it on my first watch). It showcases all of the Councillors making shading deals while Heimerdinger is just vibing to the music. On the surface it looks like it's demonstrating that Heimerdinger is the only non-corrupt member of the Council, but there's more to it: it shows that Heimerdinger is oblivious to everything going on around him. He's so busy 'vibing' that he's blind not only to the corruption around him, but to the state of his city as well. His own people are suffering, yet not only does he not do anything to help, he's barely aware of it. His being a Yordle (who are immortal, magical beings) also makes him unable to relate to the mortals around him. Sure, he can sympathize with them, but he can never truly know the fear of mortality. Or even truly grasp the passage of time from the perspective of a human; he just casually mentions needing a decade of time to safeguard the new Hextech tools as if it were nothing, when for a human that's literally anywhere from 10 to 20% of their expected lifespan, assuming they don't meet tragedy. Jayce wasn't wrong; Heimerdinger was all pretty speeches and no action. Oblivious to the plight of the mortals he was meant to safeguard and completely focused on the past. Doesn't mean he was wrong about things, but it also clouded his judgement in others.
    Heimerdinger isn't a bad person/yordle, in fact I'd say he's probably 'good' when it comes down to it. But he's deeply flawed, which is a characteristic you don't see often in the old wise mentor archetype. Coupled with his adorable appearance and chipper personality it's easy to think Jayce is being unreasonable. Jacye's motivations might have been selfish (saving his friend), but he wasn't wrong.
    Also, a little bit of fun info: since yordles are beings born of magic, Heimerdinger is capable of wielding arcane magics the way a mage would. He just chooses not to, because he's old enough to remember the old Mage Wars and clearly has PTSD from them. That's probably part of why Viktor asked Heimerdinger if he could stabilize the crystals in the second episode; since Heimerdinger could use magic then he could have possibly been able to add to the research in a way that a non arcane-user couldn't.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Рік тому +4

      That's a very astute and strong observation! His fluffy appearance definitely takes the edge off of the fact that his inaction has aided in the festering of the problems in Undercity.
      It's also clear that his past and his fears are interfering with his judgment. There could have been many regulations that could have been put into place, instead of shutting it down completely. Naturally someone as driven as Jayce is going to fight against that!
      I do appreciate the layers they've added to Heimerdinger, and all the other characters. It forces us to confront our own biases and moralities!

Hes very detached from people due to his longevity, we see time and time again how little he thinks about the people in Zaun. It takes him getting kicked off the council and betrayed by his mentee for him to go out and finally decide to help the people who needed him most. You could also argue his age and wisdom is actually holding them back from progressing forwards. He lives in cushy piltover, going to orchestras and listening to music. blind to the corruption happening all around him, because once again he is so detached from all the people in his life. Hes the definition of ignorance is bliss, despite all the wisdom provided to him over the years.

    • @kenjutsukata1o1
      @kenjutsukata1o1 Рік тому

      The show really does an excellent job with portraying mental illness. It doesn't glorify it at all, very much makes you feel pain for her and get a secondhand feel for the kind of suffering it can cause people. Every time I hear people ask "who did crazy better, Harley Quinn or Jinx?" I just feel baffled. Harley Quinn's 'crazy' is played for laughs/meant to make her 'fun' for the audience, Jinx's 'crazy' is meant to show the real horrors that mental illness can cause. So if you're talking about which one had a higher quality portrayal of 'crazy', Harley isn't even in the same League (phrasing intended) as Jinx.
      As an added note, I actually have mental illness myself, and when I was younger I would occasionally have episode where got a lot 'noise' in my head that would absolutely drive me up the wall. The constant scratch-effects that flash whenever Jinx is going through that is *such* an effective portrayal of that. Obviously it's impossible to 100% convey the experience to anybody who hasn't actually experienced it firsthand, but considering how much I can feel the memory of my old episodes every time they happen on screen are a testament to the effectiveness of the portrayal. Makes me wonder if they actually consulted with someone who experienced it.

    A thing that I love and often consider in this episode (and episodes to follow) is the difference in how Vander and Silco runs the Undercity. The drug addict with the glasses, Huck, is not a strong man. He cannot stand up for himself when threatened by people more menacing than himself, like in the bar in episode 1. But Vander runs his town like a community and looks out for those that cannot fend for themselves. In Silcos Undercity, the strong prey on the weak, and Huck ends up an abandoned, disfigured drug-addict.
    Point being, Vander is a pillar of the community and Silco is a drug-lord. And what's so neat in the storytelling is that the show never has characters say or explain this, you just see it happening and put it together yourself.

      You know, that is an excellent point! We often talk about (off-camera as well haha) how Vander and Silco are two sides of the same coin. They want Undercity to prosper, yet they go about it in two very different ways, and they each have a point and validity in their reasoning. This show does an incredible job at explaining different facets of morality, ethics, power and mental health and it's honestly so refreshing to see writers and creators take their time and offer their respect in this way!

    One question about Heimerdinger is that he is too cautious, rather scared of the arcane power, at the point that he prefer to just shut down everything than promote a cautious approach.
    He is and isn't right. He is right that hex tech is not ready and is potentially dangerous, but his approach to just do nothing -he asks for safeguards regarding the hexgem technologies, but for a complete destruction of the hexcore- is what pushes other people to rather let him go and ignore the precautions.

      Great commentary on Heimerdinger’s behavior. His actions or better said inaction seem to be caused by a traumatic experience from the past. So as logical and smart as Heimderdinger is this approach is completely based on an emotional response. Like you said. He is scared of that arcane power. Maybe in future seasons he will learn it can be used for good too.

    the cinematography in this is so good man. I've been playing games fr a long time since the ZX spectrum days wheni waslike 5. and when the Playstation 1 cameout, i noticed how good CGI cinematoraph wasin games. and started seeing that insomecases it was better than a lot of hollywood movies. and always wished the guys in charge of them would make movies or tv shows full CG. we cameclose with Final Fantasy spirits within, but hollywood messed it up. and then the bangers that were final fantasy avent children and kingsglaive cameout and kicked ass.and now arcane.and its just damn, its so cool to see the cgi being used for more grown up stuff and not just kidspixar type stuff. ttheres so many people i know wont watch this because they say ''its a cartoon and cartoons are for kids'' which is crazy because its adults making these for adults. and i think cuz its animated it makes it easier to suspend disbelief so the punches hit harderbecause its not stunt people. and the characters feel more real because they are characters literally, we hear the character speak, not an actor pretending to be them like say mario, when all you hear is chris pratt being mario (and soon garfield) with these you donthere Lucy fromfallout being Jinx, you hear Jinx. i hope they do more of this. andi hope we seemore grown up animations. its why i love Love Death and Robots.

    I thought chapter 3 was the hardest, until I saw this one and....
    The flare scene ALWAYS makes me anxious. The combination of music and imagery is incredibly effective. A lot of people don't understand why Silco hits his hitmen like that, and I think it's the fact that he realizes that, with Vi back in the Lanes, he's almost certain to lose Jinx, which shows that he really does care for her.
    Which is not to say he's not a piece of crap, but his scene in Marcus' house is one of the best in the series (there's even a detail that perhaps goes unnoticed: in one of the scenes, I think when Silco pinches Ren's cheek, the projection of his shadows on the wall makes it look like he's strangling her).

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Рік тому +1

      Maaan that flare scene?! And knowing that Jinx kept it all this time had me in tears...

      @@OfficialMediaKnights I agree, plus when he threatened Marcus while asking Ren if she could imagine being separated from her father, it wasn't just a threat to Marcus. I feel like calling that poor fellow a "piece of shit" is a bit unwarranted, eh? He's a drug addict... and drug addicts will do anything for a hit. Despite being weak, that guy is smart. He knew what he had to do and he did it. Bad actions don't necessarily make you evil. There's circumstances around every situation. I'd be interested what you'd do in slums where every day is misery, you have no reasonable way to get out and you're hopelessly addicted to a strong drug.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Рік тому

      I appreciate your input and do agree with certain points of your view. Addiction is a disease, and must be treated with care. The people in Undercity don't have the resources to get help - I am aware of that. It doesn't change the fact that he threw Vi under the bus, possibly resulting in her and Caitlyn's death - for a fix. Our trauma and our demons, shall we say, do not excuse the consequences of our actions, no matter how impossible it is at times to escape them. That does not mean I don't have empathy for his plight, however unbearable it may be. Also, do remember, our reactions are genuine, and instantaneous, therefore sometimes a knee-jerk reaction - it's also only a snapshot you get to see of us, so I'd encourage you to realize that it's not even close to an all-encompassing point of view, or our own life experiences and traumas. I hope this clarifies it for you!

    • @Rainoth_Rai
      @Rainoth_Rai Рік тому +1

      @@OfficialMediaKnights Well, he's not exactly committing attempted murder himself.
      Where do we draw the line then? When Vi hit Powder and "abandoned" her, leading to her becoming a schizophrenic murderer? Oh wait but Marcus caused that by taking her away, she would've salvaged Powder's mental state. So it's his fault then? Hmm but he wouldn't have been present there if he didn't make a deal with Silco? Silco wouldn't have known about the kids if Decard didn't say it. Decard wouldn't know... and so on.
      So every character in the show is at fault then. That's a very grim way to look at things.
      That's why I think the trauma and the experiences are important and should absolve some of the blame.
      I understand that these are genuine reactions and that's why I'm here on EP6 w/ you guys, however, given that videos are edited, you're left with a tool to present the most positive ideas.
      Leaving it in could come off as having no empathy (which is why I commented).
      Thank you for the clarification. I do see this engaging in comments with the viewers as a big positive to reaction channels as a lot of things can't be expressed with a remark. Especially on a show like this.

      Man, the Silco in Marcus's daughter's room scene has got to be one of the most intimidating threat scenes out there. You feel your heart sink into your stomach right along with Marcus when he realizes that his daughter was playing all alone in her room with an extremely dangerous man for who knows how long, a man who could have done anything he wanted to her at any point and Marcus wouldn't have known until it was too late. And Silco's verbal threats are *perfectly* subtle while also being perfectly blatant all at the same time. Plus it's eerie how good he is with kids, how Ren was clearly completely comfortable with him in spite of how freaky he looked. It's also kind of sad, because him being so good with kids probably would have made him a very beloved person if he'd grown up in different circumstances that didn't mold him into the person he became.

He's a nice person, but he doesn't understand other people He almost drove Jayce to suicide, and didn't even notice he's been a leader of pilotover since its founding and yet the undercity has still ended up as it is. Heimer may have the wisdom, but he's still as much to blame for pilotovers restless civil situation and the poor living condition of the lanes, so mush more then other councilours Heimerdinger doesn't understand the urgency to improve lives because yordle like him is immortal I don't think he is evil but he definitely is complicit and ignorant to the problems he has allowed to fester

      One of our commenters had mentioned that it's so much easier to like Heimerdinger because of his cute and fluffy appearance - and I agree that tha plays a part!
      Heimerdinger, though mature and calm, is not what you need when you need change. You need someone proactive, someone who's willing to step on others' toes and make people face uncomfortable truths. Jayce has done exactly that, though his intentions in doing it are a whole other aspect to be discussed.
      Inequality and power imbalanced only fester and strive because the 'good people' do nothing - there is no inherent knowledge on how things work for those who aren't privileged and safe. Sadly, Heimerdinger's different perception of time is what takes away the lack of urgency. Viktor said it best - some people need help NOW. And Heimerdinger was never going to quite understand that - especially because he also never saw what Undercity is going through!

It always takes huge amount of obviousness to a lot of people to identify homossexual atraction and romantic intentions, even in situations where, if it was between a man and a woman, people would just instantly assume these intentions. Like, bro, they are flirting since day one. Vi literally pinned Cait against a wall and called her hot. Where is the subtlety in that? I (Denise) am actually Bisexual and have witnessed too much Bi-erasure (which is quite often somehow a thing I receive as a Bi woman married to a man, and I know I'm not the only one!) or the hypersexualization of Bi people (women in particular) so it's actually a topic that's incredibly important to me.
      It was more of a bit of an inside joke, where I always hope for more homosexual love storylines that are done well, so I sorta live in this space of 'Could it be?!' because most of the time, we see it mishandled so awfully in so many different forms of entertainment mediums. And whilst I try not to be, the disappointment of witnessing that mishandling is just frustrating and does take away from my enjoying a film/show/game completely. That denial you saw (and no, not the river in Egypt 🤣) was more a 'too good to be true' hesitation!
      But you're 100% right! The male and heterosexual gaze is a very real thing that we're all raised with, so we all have to look inward and do the work, so we may experience a story to its fullest!
      We always hope for a little more homoerotic subtext ahahah. Hope this clears it up for you!
      Thanks so much again for the comment, we love seeing people call things out with eloquence and humor!
