In this video Daniel and Mick follow up on the ‘Reverb Basics’ video that you can find here:
We’re comparing six high-quality modern reverb pedals, five digital and one genuine analogue spring reverb… plus the in-amp reverb in our Fender Super Reverb amplifier.
As regular viewers will know, our fully-featured, all-singing all-dancing, no-compromise reverb of choice is the Strymon Big Sky and you can see and hear that in many of our other videos. Today we don’t spend too much time on it, as there are a lot of newer pedals to get through!
    The pedals we’re using today:
    • MXR M300 Reverb
    UK & Europe: bit.ly/2hLvESX
    USA: bit.ly/3yo9D1c
    • Lovepedal Hall Mod - no longer made
    • Neunaber Immerse

    • Strymon Big Sky

    USA: imp.i114863.ne...

    • Carl Martin Headroom Reverb
Our overdrives today are the Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem and a Lovepedal Eternity.

Mick is playing a Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster. Dan is playing a Fender Custom Shop ’63 Telecaster.

Ended up getting an Empress after trying out some of the other pedals -- including the Strymon and the Neunaber (and handful not mentioned here) -- and I couldn't be happier with the Empress. In addition to some really useful sub-categories (like lush ambient swells, shimmering atmospheric ambience, sparkling octave reverb, etc.) the main reason I bought it was that it did the *key* sounds perfectly. The Spring, Hall, Plate, and Room tones are IMO just better than the competition. Plus, it is very tweakable without being overwhelming -- I guess it's cool to have like 500 menus to scroll through on a pedal but I want to simply dial in a tone, save it, and play, which the Empress Reverb does super well. It also comes with an SD card slot where you can add free upgrades as well as the ability to use it as a looper pedal. It's awesome!

I know this is an old video, but I purchased an Mxr reverb a few months ago and I love it. Would love to go down the reverb rabbit hole like I have with drives and fuzzes but geez it gets expensive and the Mxr is very reasonably priced

Great demo. I was genuinely blown away by the humble reverb pedal when I bought a Hall Of Fame a few years back. I never knew reverb could be so musical and inspirational. I thought of reverb as in what you get on an amp. Now though I'm not sure why so many get hung up on ye ol' Spring reverb as the Plates, Halls and Mods sound so so good.

Everything on 10.Placed amp at bottom of narrow concrete stairwell in studio toilet cubicle.Close mike with Shure SM57 (I think, maybe AKG).Far miked with one at the top of concrete stairwell.Closed all doors, sealing in reverberations.Thrash guitar in studio iso booth 50 metres away from amp.I still have those demos. hey there? what's your favorite subtle, darker room reverb? I liked the BlueSky with low dampening all the way up, high all the way down..but had to sell it, underutilized anyways...I had a Context, too digital sounding, currently have a SubDecay Super spring-- it's ok. loved the reverb on the Flint, the middle setting, but had to sell it....I think i need a dedicated reverb and trem... any help would be appreciated... for context, I play weird punk/rock/experimental.....don't need many feature, just want a spring without the boing/splash or a room reverb that sounds " real"...I've been curious about the Spaceman Orion and the Van Solemate real spring but have heard very differing views on them...

Its not hard to do that for the big sky lmao. I own one. Just sold my backup that was on my wife's bass board. It was awesome when it came out but they haven't done enough. For 500 bucks it should get constant major updates every year. The empress is still leagues above the mxr. But why is my bigsky getting absoluteky shat on by the SA ventris. I had to buy another 300 reverb pedal cause my 500 dollar one isn't as good. Strymon needs to up their game hard. They've been focusing on all these new pedals. And their timeline and bigsky etc are getting destroyed. By timeline hasnt been used in forever. Between my timefactor and belle epoch and Arion sad 1. There's no point. Strymon used to kick ass and they've dropped the ball. They aren't on top anymore yet ask prices like they are. I can get an h9 for the price of a bigsky and have reverbs that are just as good. Sometimes better. And any other effect(I dont own a h9 anymore sold it cause digital modulation sucks hard and my delays and verbs are covered) but for say just delay and reverb and h⁹ can do both amazingly well

Destroyed? Or matched by pedals going for similar prices?
Strymons are and sound as good as they did on day 1.
The same happens to the classic digital verb units of 80s or 90s.
The updates are more meant for functionality issues/requests.
Digital modulation suck? H9s’? May be you didn’t know what you were doing.

Predelay is great for 'positioning' the sound source. No predelay is like having your amp at the other end of the hall - as you introduce more predelay, it's like pulling the amp closer to you. More immediacy. Try it the next time you do a full mix - you can place your guitar (or voice) anywhere on the sound stage.

V40 now very popular though, so perhaps we should do a show on it alone, with common effect types (and drives/dists/fuzzes) that work... Hmmmmm

That Pedal Show I love this idea. The V40 is a truly amazing amp - its flexibility continues to astound me. I've had one for nearly 18 months and I'm still finding bigger and badder sounds it can do. Plus I would LOVE to hear a Carpe Diem into one. Angry Charlie + Keeley Katana Boost (dirt on) into Voice 2 on High Power = Massive, massive sound. Don't show anyone that though, they'll all want one!

Awesome episode guys! ive been holding out until the MXR reverb hits Australia before i decide which one to buy. I would love you guys to include a "poor man's option" in each of you videos! i love hearing the vintage and mod stuff but it would be cool (and informative) to hear a relativity cheap option next to it! Keep up the good work!

I'm a bit late to the party... but the preferred way to create an impulse response (for a convolution reverb) is a sine sweep. If that's not possible, something like a starter pistol or a clap is the most convenient substitute.

Thank you so much. Best MXR Reverb Demo… compared with an actual spring… the spring reverb. The MXR Reverb gets so much shit about not being a good spring reverb pedal… well, I guess that’s of the table then.

Concerning the use of Eventide. Your interface has an output or two, which send the analog (the incoming dry amp sound) and sends that thru the Eventide. It returns to the interface as 2 additional channels (1 stereo CH). The recording can be summed or kept separate, in case you want to send that dry track back thru something different. The idea is to 1st cherish your dry tone, which has absolutely nothing on it. A great Marshall, a great Fender, whatever blows your hair back. The saturation can be adjusted several ways, which can be confusing. Keep it loud and super wet, and reduce those two channels in the daw line mixer. The preamp, poweramp, speakers are all reference dry tone. There is nothing to lose, lossless digital effects. If plugins were decent, the Eventide would be a boat anchor, but Italo has written some brilliant effects.

At Decca Studios in Broadhurst Gardens (where “Beano” was recorded) they used a 2 story stairwell for reverb. This worked great except when someone was halfway down when the red light went on....

  • @lance134679

Very nice reverb pedals and discussion, as usual. It's amazing how you can take such a plain sounding guitar and make it sound awesome with different time effects, such as reverb or delay. Surprising how well the pedals compete with the internal spring reverb. I think waiting for reverb tails added about 10 minutes onto the length of the video.
I've always hesitated to invest any time, money or space into reverb pedals because sometimes you'll find yourself in a big boomy hall where there's no real point in using reverb. In the studio, I either use the spring reverb in the amp for retro sounds or simply add reverb in the DAW (there are some amazing in the box reverb plugins like Quantum Leap Spaces). I do use delay a lot live, however, maybe too much. However, this show makes me want to mess around with reverb in my rig a bit more.

Catalinbread Topanga, guys. Fender outboard reverb emulation. Mix, Dwell & Tone, plus emulates driving the real thing into clipping (hot pickups, boost pedal) via the Vol knob. The gnat's nads IMO.
