      I ask, no, I DEMAND the full version of this track! The first seconds I heard it, so sweet memories that never happened to me, hit me so hard.. Sitting by the fireplace in my house, it's raining outside, beautiful blonde wife and 3 kids are with me.. We are happy, I'm playing guitar, we're drinking hot chocolate.

      I’ve tried probably 6 different reverbs including having multiple pedals that focus on different types of reverb and while they sound great, none of them come close to the versatility or depth of the strymon.

    A great thing with the BigSky & TimeLine (and probably Mobius) which is useful when wanting to recreate a patch is if you change anything the preset button will change its color to red and when changed back it turns green again. Yoy could go through all knobs like that to see what settings you dialed in! :) great video!

    Great reverb tips Rhett! - Years ago I had an old analog spring reverb, and I got this amazing effect out of it I've never been able to replicate. It sounded like a jet engine accelerating into some kind of "hyper drive". I got this sound by massively over-driving the unit (which I assume was designed for line-level) by placing it _after_ the power amp section and slowly turning the amp up from zero until it sounded insane and then doing a dive-bomb on the whammy bar. -- As the whammy went down the insane distortion actually went "up" through some kind of zero point and into this weird "phasey" modulated distortion reminiscent of the final fade-out of Van Halen's Eruption. It was really other-worldly sounding and makes me want to pick up an old analog spring unit off of eBay and try to recreate it. - Not sure I'm that adventurous any more though, lol.

    • @starttherebellion9146
      @starttherebellion9146 6 років тому +1

      I may have had a phaser somewhere in the chain around the pre-amp section as well. I probably did as I used to use a slow phaser almost all the time on leads back then.

    I almost snagged me one of these, they are really amazing! Price was not an issue nor was the size. I opted for the Wampler mainly due to the fact that, I probably would never use even half of the features on the big sky. There are many who do and to those a big thumbs to them and the big sky.

  • @JacobH93
    @JacobH93 3 роки тому +1

    I’ve had a couple nice reverbs but honestly the best shimmer verb I’ve ever heard was on a boss RV6. If you get the tone in the right place to where you don’t really hear the octave swell in, it can make some beautiful soundscapes. To me shimmer can be really nice when used subtly! Especially with swells
    Currently thought I just use a Neunaber immerse. I love the wet sound but I wish I had something with more sounds available on presets. I play in church mostly and the settings I use are somewhat close to the preset you called versatile.

    Killer intro! This video is helpful for understanding why guitarists might want multiple reverb sounds on a gig.
    I'm a bit of a minimalist and like to use the onboard spring reverb in my Carr Rambler.
    I plug straight in, crank the amp to 10, use my guitar controls to dial back, and barely turn up the reverb to get a touch-sensitive reverb that you feel more than hear. From there, I can wind it up or down depending on the vibe and the room.

    Your ‘versatile’ mix sounds like the soundtrack of every Peter Berg movie. I don’t ‘know’ this as fact, as I’ve never met the man, but it’s become almost a staple in each of his films. For instance any 60sec clip of ‘Friday Night Lights’ you could choose, I’ll bet, will have this sound in the background.
    Curious to be sure… but I’ve come to enjoy it. Nice mix! I really learn a lot from these pedal specific ‘tips and tricks’ videos. 👏🏼🎶

    i love your channel, really do.. not especially what or how you play (you would probably say the same thing about me), but your overall love for the instrument and your gift to make it nuanced and contagious.. just one thing about the "no plan B" thing.. i'm sure your genuineness would, in the end agree, that the era we live in as musicians confronts us on a daily basis to the plan B "let's still fill the fridge and pay the rent".. i agree with the sentiment, it's necessary to become a great musician, but let's not kid ourselves, disappearing in your basement to record an album (that won't sell in itself on a "record" form, and will have to rely on finding side ways to make it worth on a financial/time/reality field).. your channel IS a plan B.. and a great one at that.. much love and indeed, keep on keeping on.. XX

    Playing synth I really like what you do at the end, replacing people like us so we can go to the bar and grab a drink : )
    But seriously, I like what you do there, especially when going weird.
    In the world of modular synths the saying is that you can not have enough VCAs. I think in the world of music in general you can not have enough reverb pedals. I got a Tc electronic Hall of Fame that I made a ridiculous patch for in the Tone Print editor. I have no clue as to what is going on there, but with it i found some sweet spots for gradually camouflaging what I'm playing and turn it into something totally recognizable and different.
    I also just recently got a Eventide Space that I just scratched the surface on what it can do.
    Then for you as I think I saw an Earthquacker Devise on your board, and you said in another video that you love delays especially, that you if you haven't should try the Avalanche Run, and or maybe the Disaster Transport SR.

    You're quite the sound architect, Mr Shull! And you play well, too! I love it! :-) I have yet to hear that 'shimmer' reverb at church, I was more reminded of U2's 'The Unforgettable Fire' album and something from Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' one. 13:09 reminds me of Andy Summers' guitar synth sounds, and he had tuned it to 5ths also. Nice stuff, and greetings from NZ! :-)

    Very helpful, thanks. You get at the biggest challenge for us non-pros - what to do with the gear we buy. I mean we buy it for a reason - example: I buy a TC Nova mod pedal for some Chorus for Rush songs and maybe Flange for EVH. However, I don't really know much of what else it can do or how to do it. I would guess most people don't know even standard techniques - like your comment on using room and plate for small vs. spring for large. There a great business out there for someone to just tell people how to use the thousands of dollars of gear they've got in new and interesting ways. This vid helps with that. Thanks again. BTW - you should talk more on the Beato gigs - the other (repair) guy, always does all the talking. ;-)

      If you want a Pedal the will give you that Classic Alex Lifeson Chorus - buy the Free the Tone Tri Avatar Chorus ( just trust me) = Phenomenal Pedal. ( by far ) The Best Chorus I have ever heard, & I have Tried them All. For the Van Halen Flanger , Id just buy the MXR EVH Flanger (not my personal choice), as I prefer The Mooer Elec Lady / EHX Mistress clone.

    Well, I just stopped the video, went to Reverb, and bought me one of these Strymon Big Skies...I’ve been mulling it for a few months, this last video, as well as the last one, pushed me over the edge. I cannot wait for it to get here. 😎😎😎

    Hey man love that board, in the process of redoing mine with an RJM PBC10, I was wanting to know what you are using the color box for, I love it for bass and acoustic, but was wanting to know how you use it?

    Probably the best demo I've seen of the Big Sky even if it was not intended as a demo ahah

    Any chance you could share the settings? I'm really digging and would like to use the spring reverb.
