Dang, just ordered part 1-6 off eBay for cheap and they're probably bootlegs. Thanks for the vid
So are they bootleg? I also just got 1-6 on eBay and am now skeptical myself
@@zacharytrich8084 I think they are because they were shrink wrapped around the slipcover and the toei logo was messed up like in the video although the seller refunded me and I didn't have to return them
All ebays r bootlegs
I didn't even know there were bootleg copies of DBS! Great video & thanks for a heads up!
Why there's no "dragon ball z Kai bootleg Blu Ray's" yet??, also we need "dragon box Bootleg DVD's" too because the authentic are so ridiculous expensive

Wow just relized I got hit with some fakes I'm calling back and getting my money from eBay
Best of luck with getting your money back! Glad the video helped!
thank you for this video, many copies of the series on eBay are bootleg, such was the case with part 7, I had bought it on blu Ray thinking it was legit, but turns out, it was a fake copy
I’m sorry that happened to you but I’m glad my video was able to help!
Thanks, Im on a budget so I can’t spend more than 30 bucks on a paycheck (since I’m saving for college), so I’ll probably rebuy it later on in the far future
I got dbz kai final chapter part tbree bootleg. The discs where black undreath!on eBay. Package looked real! It's gone next level. Can't always order from funimation.
I don't buy any blu-ray or dvd on Ebay that doesn't show a picture of the actual product. Steer clear from any Ebay listing that's just a jpg image. That's also one way to tell if you're dealing with fake copies for anyone that isn't sure. I rarely buy from Amazon for this reason. If I can't see what I'm buying I don't trust it. Although, it is different if you're buying in bulks. I remember buying a complete seasons bulk for a tv show off ebay once, showed pics and everything, however I recently discovered they were also bootlegs. If they come shrink wrapped all together you're dealing with fakes.
Great video. Very useful info. Do you know if Kai on Blu-ray has similar issues? Worried that I have bootlegs of DBZ Kai...
Thanks!
I haven’t seen any reports of Kai bootlegs but if you could send me some pictures of the copies you have particularly the back of the discs to my Twitter, Instagram or Facebook @Soundout12, I can try and help identify if they’re bootlegs or not
Yes i had a bootleg "black under disc" replica of kai final chapter part three from ebay on bluray seller in ebay didnt refund me after i sent them back had to open a cqse. Gotten nothing but real ordering from target.com (the store site stock not merchants)
I bought parts 1-9 on eBay for $165 and just got them in the mail. I knew right away they were bootlegs from the metallic slipcover and the discs. Also the part 3 slipcover wasn't lenticular like the real thing. Vegeta's hair should turn from blue to black on the real part 3 slipcover.
Are the official blurays 50gb and the bootlegs 25? I got one of the bootleg DVD and it was single layer and not duel like the offical
When checking this kind of thing it's worth pointing out that, for Super, Funi's Disc 1s are BD50s and their Disc 2s are BD25s (which is why the episodes are divided unevenly).
Thanks for making this, and informing about bootlegs. I havent seen bluray boots before, but clearly they exist. I made a dragon ball dvd bootleg guide as well - the boot was very well done
Its scary how good these bootlegs are
Thank you very much for this comparison. I ordered a set of 6 parts on DVD from Amazon recently. I got suspicious, because part 5 (also with Goku Black, like on your video) was looking different from others. The picture on cover was stretched. I checked then all the details you mentioned and sadly I bought counterfeits (480p video, stereo sound, badly-made subtitles etc.)... I'm gonna return it and get a refund asap. Thanks again!
You’re welcome!
@soundout12.. just ordered all 10 Dragon Ball Super Blu Rays online due to covid from Best Buy & at least 7 seasons or arcs were 20 bucks instead of 30, only arc 1 & 2 were closer to 30 bucks.. wont receive them in like about a week, do you think most or all are bootleg? Based on your video the goku black arc 5 looks burgundy on Best Buys website & you showed us real copy is red
If they’re coming from Best Buy they should be official product but its still a wait and see situation
Target.com is safe if you order online. I have gotten my final real copy of super vol 10 on it.
I think I just spent 45$ on bootlegs shit. On eBay
Just received all 10 parts from Ebay and i was able to determine that they were all bootleg thanks to your video.
Glad I was able to help
@@Soundout12 Do they play fine?
Do they play fine?
@@melt6479 some discs do...Others tend to freeze and skip.
At least on eBay you can ask for pictures before you purchase and if they don't answer it's probably fake most likely. Amazon needs to fix their 3rd party system even with their guarantees.
Everything was ethical about what Amazon did
You just didn't want to return it
UPDATE: I emailed the guy and he refunded me. Guess I can throw those fakes in the trash.
I thought that I found a pretty good deal when I bought Parts 6-8 on Blu-Ray from Ebay for $39.99, but I noticed something really weird when I opened up Part 8 since the colors on the insert cover were very faded and was almost see-thru, as well as the fact that it looked like it was printed on some really cheap ass printer. The Blu-Ray cases themselves looked like very cheap and flimsy cases that didn't have the smooth rounded edges and the chrome coloring inside the "Blu-Ray Disc" logo was scratched off and there were tiny pieces of plastic tabs sticking out everywhere. The disc's were really difficult to pop out of the case and they had the same light artwork with the "disrupted" art on the center hole. The back of the disc's had this see-thru clear color, which means they were definitely printed on BD recordable discs.
I popped the disc in my PS4 and I noticed that it took my system a while to read the disc and then it came up as "Dragon Ball Super P7 D1" which looked really weird, so then I popped in my legit copy of DBZ Season 1 and it came up as "Dragon Ball Z Season 1 Disc 1". It also did the same thing with the 2 channel audio.
As for the slipcovers tho, they did a better job with the metallic covers but the Toei and Funimation logo's look horrible.
It really sucks that I got ripped off like but I'm glad that you made this video.
@Deven Keough That sucks, have you tried to get a refund on them? I got a refund for my part seven bootleg almost immediately after I requested a return
@@mangooverdose3204 I haven't contacted the seller yet but I'm going to see what I can do. I remember that the Ebay seller was selling these parts in bulk, so he probably didn't know they were fake copies, so I'm hoping I can get a refund without shipping them back.
@Deven Keough
Hopefully the seller gives you your money back, because I didn’t actually have to send my copy back for him to give me my money back.
Thank you for sharing your story. I’m glad the video was able to help
thank you.
you just saved me $65. 2 weeks ago I bought parts 1-8 on blu ray from ebay for $65 but they were all bootleg . I have not opened them from shink wrap but the Toei logo on the spine was the give away.
I got all my money back from seller and I didn't have to return them back. I'll re-buy them from Bestbuy or Walmart. Now what should I do with all these bootlegs?
Thats a good question
RAGMAN throw em away
Walmart doesn't have blu-ray
Thank you so much for making this we just received the full collection and realized it was bootleg but were scouring the web trying to comfirm our fears and alas our whole collection is bootleg :( We are very sad about this but we will be returning it/getting our money back if we can. We got it from eBay. We will be more cautions next time. He really wanted to watch Super and own the awesome set :( We don't like giving money to people who do this so best of luck to us in our return and search for legit copies. If anyone has ideas where to find a legit collection set of DBZ Super please feel free to comment!
Bummer you got bootlegs, but I’m glad this video was able to help identify them. Best of luck on the return!! I usually shop for anime from RightStufAnime these days. Never had any issues with them
@@Soundout12 Thanks for the suggestion!
Are these people getting punished or what Man? guess digital should be the new age so we don't have go thru this bull as dedicated fans
Was about to buy seasons 1 through 7 for 80 bucks you saved my ass thanks!
Glad I could help!
Shouldn't the numbers in the disc matrix be different as well? You can see part of one on @8:56
I don't have have any DBS blu-rays, but looking at Disc 4 of my official copy of Bebop I can see a long complex number indicating the pressing. It even has IFPI SID codes like CD's do. If burnable blu-rays are the same as the CD's, it should only have more of a random number sequence in the transparent part of the central hub and no IFPI codes.
ex. My Bebop has (539852) FN-09055D 18E 040001 IFPI LV79 on the outermost ring, (539853) FN-09055D 21E 020001 IFPI L897 in the middle ring, and IFPI KKRC in the clear part of the central hub. I assume the bootleg won't be able to match that since the disc isn't moulded with those ID's in the first place. Do note that Funi/Crunchy could change the format of their codes at any time, or even on a per-release basis.
Too lazy to pull out my other BD's to see if Funi's codes always have FN as the prefix for the catalog number, but it wouldn't surprise me.
I hadn't considered checking the matrix codes honestly. I need to do that some time
Damn I wish I had seen this a week ago. I bought the entire DBS S1 for $50 off Poshmark and noticed the video quality was very pixelated
Dang 🙁
That could probably be the reason, why my serie isn't fully working on the Xbox. Since I happen to own a bootleg
Bummer
R.I.P. to anyone watching this realising their collection is full of bootlegs😂
😂
I'm worried af now. Gonna check my collection when I get home
@@NarutoUzumaki-mx7ef Let us know how it goes😂
@@SadManHappyFace turns out they are all legit. Man I was so worried
sigh. wish I saw this sooner. Part 2 Disc 2 started to glitch so I came looking for answers. I thnk my series is a bootleg...
Oh no
Wow I had no idea. I have most parts but specifically 3 and 4 I remember buying from the same person on eBay for a little cheaper and sure enough they are super fake can't believe I didn't notice. Thanks so much
Your welcome!
Hey is there an updated release i started collecting these 5 years ago got to part 5 said i should finish the collection and i got a skinnier blu to the rest any ideas?
Ever since Sony bought Funimation and merged it with Crunchyroll, they've been reissuing titles in slightly different packaging and styles. It could be part of that. If it has a Crunchyroll logo, it would be from the newer releases.
yea but on amazon, you need to watch out for the seller real how the seller was if it was 3rd party because if it says fulfillment by amazon then it is not from amazon their shipping truck would just be shipped by amazon. but if it says amazon seller and amazon shipper then yea they will not sell you a fake copy. I order all my dragon ball z 2013 blu rays season 1-9 I got all legit. if it says fulfillment 9times out of ten it will be boot left but if ti s say amazon seller and amazon shipper then you get a legit copy. I made sure my DBZ DVDs or blu rays, in general, say amazon seller and amazon shipper .but yea it is a problem from the 3rd party seller not amazon's fault just the seller's fault.
I wish I had saw this video months ago, I've wasted $100 basically 😔
😔
I need to go back and repurchase Parts 1 and 2 of Dragon Ball Super on Blu-Ray. I’m terrified of these bootleg problems and have no idea where to buy them officially now. I’ll probably just spend the little extra and buy them from FUNimation’s website.
BlueBlur86 go to Best Buy or Walmart that’s where I get my copies
I've also noticed that on the side of the slipcover and insert where it says dragonball super it shows TM next to the title where the real ones do not
What about quality on screen comparison?
The official blu-ray is sharper and higher resolution than the bootleg. From what I remember the Official was 1080p and the bootleg was 720p
Shit, just got 1-10 bootlegs. I was questioning all the skipping within the episodes and stumbled onto this video.
They changed the coloring and cutouts on the back to try to get a closer match and began wrapping the individual Blu-ray cases under the shrink wrap.
Damn. I'm sorry you ended up with bootlegs
@@Soundout12 yeah same here, but with your video I got clear answers and got to return it before getting stuck with garbage. Thanks for making the video. 👍🏻
@@ZeroFksGvn I’m so glad to hear that!
Wow I didn’t know there are fakes of these 😅😂🤣
Its getting common with funimation titles sadly
My brother and I went to Half Priced Books store and he got season 4. It wasn't until he got home and looked at the disk that he noticed the black on the back compared to the first two seasons that had a normal reflective back.
Oh dang
Bought all 10 parts...damn it
I just got all the seasons including the DBS Broly from Bestbuy & part 2 is a bit lighter of a shade blue on the blue ray logo on top of the cover compared to the others, should I be worried?
Personally, I don’t really care about the cover. *I just want my discs >:)*
Thank you I'm about to order all of the dragon ball super dvds on eBay now I'll be careful and know what to look for
I skipped the part sets and went for the collector's edition since I prefer to have the show in one box as opposed to in parts.
I’m curious to know if this Blu-ray box that I purchased of dragon ball Z is a bootleg because it looks poorly manufactured and it has a couple of audio glitches and doesn’t work right.
That sounds like a bootleg
I order all my anime through rightstuf.com, no problems with bootlegs
Tbh my part 5 is actually the same color as the bootleg but I bought my edition from Walmart so it’s not a bootleg because in fact the shrink wraps underneath the slipcover and the place where the barcode is it’s a Funimation cut out and oh and my blu ray case was flimsy like the bootleg but still isn’t a boot leg. Also my disc is the copyrighted lol one last thing don’t be cheap and buy from a third party seller try and wait and save money -.-
You should be fine. Sometimes different production runs will have slight color variations. Luckily we have several other indicators to tell
Hm.. Zia records by me has quite a few of DBS.
Gotta check to see if they are the bootlegs
How do I tell for DVDs? I bought the DVD versions for 40 bucks parts 1-9. They seem legit and the same as official ones I see online, but just in case I would like to know. I've had no problem with them either aside from Part 2's case coming slightly damaged (It's not noticable when I display it though).
Check for similar parts to those of the Blu-Ray. The quality of the text printing, logo accuracy, etc
@@Soundout12 Everything seems to check out fine. Thank you! I must have gotten a good deal then.
Glad to hear it!
Field Marshal can you send me the link to them If you can’t send it on here my insta is notbae04 thanks man
Yep I bought Super Blu-ray’s off eBay and they were clearly bootlegs. The dead giveaway was the discs were blue on the bottom. I returned them and got a refund. The seller didn’t even try to argue with me.
Sounds like that worked out in the end
Can you give your opinion on whether or not my blu ray is fake? I found your video because I’m suspicious. Bought it from amazon and have pictures for you 😬
Do you have a twitter or instagram? You can dm me the pictures on either platform @soundout12
Just wanted to say thank you. This video saved me bought an entire collection of all fakes. Re bought the authentic blue rays from Amazon first party & in the process of returning the fakes.
I’m so glad my video was able to help and I’m glad you got a full official set!
I'm not sure if the TM is a real way to spot fakes or not but its just something I noticed if anyone else has the whole set can clarify it would be appreciated
Good catch
Where is the best place to get blu ray of dbs
helped me realize I ordered a Fullmetal Alchemist bootleg on Ebay, kinda disappointed but idk if I wanna go through the effort of returning it
Especially with FMA being out of print, that’s a tough choice
@@Soundout12 yeah that's kinda why I'm struggling to decide caus re official copies are like only going up in price
Last year I purposefully bought a bootleg cartridge of Mega Man Star Force 3: Black Ace on Amazon. The game has never seen a re-release and official copies cost over a hundred dollars. I just wanted to play the game. Despite the copy being clearly shown to be a bootleg, Amazon Prime shipping was available for it.
Dang. So Amazon does it with games too. That sucks
@@Soundout12 With games it usually isn't too bad. They're typically transparent about which copies are reproductions and which are official. And bootlegs can be a solid option for expensive out of print games, if you want to play the games on original hardware instead of emulating them
I ordered from Walmart and they do appear to be bootleg based on packaging and presentation. I paid $100 for 1-10 DVD but the picture and sound look fine to me.
They’re possibly bootlegs but if you happy with them, then you do you
Would these be safe to order at Amazon if it's directly sold and shipped from them? I ask because I recently ordered parts 1-9 from them (direct from Amazon and not a third party) and am concerned I might receive bootlegs. Thanks for the helpful vid.
You should be okay with them coming from amazon directly. But if you do receive bootlegs be sure to contact their customer service asap
Sounds good. Ordered with Prime some of the DBS Blu-rays I got are scheduled to arrive this Tuesday while some others are delayed to May 3rd because of COVID-19. Gonna be a long wait for the delayed parts but it's good to know what to look for in case I do get bootlegs from them, thanks again.
You’re welcome! Let me know how it goes. Best of luck!
Can you please upload clips comparing both bootleg and official versions?
I don’t currently have the tech available to do so nor a platform to post without getting destroyed by copyright bots
@@Soundout12 I understand. thank you for your response. This video helped me out so much.
I’m glad to hear that!
What if you buy the Blu ray from the funimation shop?
Since they’re the studio that put it out, it should be official
Oh okay thanks 🙏
Why are people bootlegging Blu-Rays?
To make money off other people’s work
Soundout12 I mean, yeah... but you’d think they’d be bootlegging the Dragon Boxes or something.
Which they have, alongside almost any other DB release. These are just the closest to the actual products
Where do buy the real ones and does every blu ray come with the funimation dub
I go to Best But or Wal Mart. Physical stores are best. All North American Blu Rays will have the Funimation Dub
@@Soundout12 sad thing is i live in the uk 😥 and they dont sell the films in stores so...
Can you check if mine are real or fake
Do you have a way you can send me a picture?
@@Soundout12 instragram? But is there fakes for all blu rays or just dragon ball because mine isnt dragon ball its my hero academia
Hi, this was a great video. I have this weird situation, I bought part 4 and part 5 from different sellers on eBay but both have identical characteristics in the case. I have little doubt that the cases are bootleg, but the discs inside complicate things. The discs, as far as I can tell, are legit, and I even compared them to the part 3 set I have, which I know is authentic. Also, I see a proper 1080p picture and the 5.1 TrueHD audio track is indeed present, so either it's an extremely well-made bootleg, or it's the real thing. What perplexes me though, is how this situation of bootleg case, legit discs, could occur with two different eBay sellers. For both, the actual plastic case is the exact same, made by this company called eco-lite, and is just like the one in your video, cheap and flimsy. Any thoughts on this? If the discs are truly legit, then I am not too bothered honestly. Thanks!
Thats fascinating. I’ve noticed some variation in packaging quality when I’ve seen the blu rays in stores. Heck, even on my set, part 4 is less shiny than the others even tho the rest is legit. As well as Parts 1, 2, 6, and 7 being eco pack and Parts 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10 being a standard BD case all purchased from Best Buy. So like you said, as long as the discs are legit you should be good to go
@@Soundout12 Ah I see, thanks. So the eco-lite cases are also sometimes used officially then I take it? Should be okay either way.
Yep. I mostly think its funimation being cheap lol
@@Soundout12 Yeah and the 13 episodes per set, and putting just 4 episodes on one of the discs doesn't help them lol
For real lol. If they weren’t going to do more episodes per set they could have at least balanced it better
you have information for DVD?
I sadly do not, But I imagine a lot of the red flags from the blu rays apply to dvds
do you have suggestion to avoid bootleg from amazon?
Make sure its sold from amazon directly regardless of price. Otherwise, try to buy them at Best Buy or Wal Mart
I have dragon ball super dvd that i want to buy from amazon can you help me to identify the original?
I can do my best
