- I purchased a Dragon Ball Season 1 DVD online, and figured out it was a bootleg. I then purchased a confirmed real copy afterwards.
Since I was not able to find any videos about how to tell if a Dragon Ball DVD was fake, I decided to make one. Hope it's helpful
I just bought a bootleg set unknowingly, and I gotta say.... they did a damn good job. As far as I have seen, no skipping and the video/audio quality is pretty damn good. They’re almost on point with everything. I was tempted to just keep it and not go through the all the hassle but I honestly don’t want a bootleg set. Makes me feel nasty inside and I hate seeing it next to my other dbz sets lol.

I accidentally got one of these bootlegs too. I'd have to disagree, the video quality was VERY compressed compared to a legit copy.
lol I know the feeling, ive been holding onto a few of my super set ones I got only cause they’re high for like 13 episodes for each set but I’ll replace them in time.
I got a fake and the English audio is no longer 5.1

The easiest way to tell is to stick the disc in your computer. If the disc size is under 4.3GB, it's a boot. You can also play the the VOB files in VLC because they have been decrypted.
The discs of season 5 also have King Piccolo instead of older Goku on the bootlegs.
This was immensely helpful, thank you. I saw some sets on eBay selling for too-good-to-be-true pricing and saw this. So I just bought seasons 2-5 on Crunchyroll and found a seller with good pics to verify a legit copy of season 1 on eBay.

I bought a fake set on Amazon too. My plan was to digitize them. Makemkv altered me to the fact that the fakes were made with a dvdburner and had issues ripping them. I was trying to pull out a disc and it just cracked in half too!
I bought the next set from Amazon listed as “shipped and sold” by Amazon and I received legit versions next.
Also on the disclaimer on the back it says "Adra Toryama" and the the copyright is for Dragonball Z.
They are the even bigger tell tale signs.
Something I look for is wear on the boxes (i.e. corners where the ink is worn away), because that is a surefire indicator that the set was made a while ago and was pre-owned before me. I would rather sacrifice some condition to ensure I get legitimate copies. Between local stores and ebay, I have compiled seasons 1-4, none of which are fake. Thank you for making this video. All of mine have booklets or advertisements from the correct period of the dvds.

Crunchyroll has been sold out of season one for over a year now and it's not even listed anymore. Only used and bootleg copies are left of season 1 these days... anyone know why?
I bought a lot of brand new Dragonball seasons sets for 50$ last month.The seller had 100% positive feedback since 2015 on eBay though so I wasn’t worried. I’ll check the sets when I get home to see if they’re fake.
Same i just bought them from Amazon and mine aren't even this type of thick brick packaging they have slip covers but theyre in thin regular sized clear dvd cases.
Season 1 was cracked in the corner. And some have minor tears.
@iNeoCats Unfortunately yes. I contacted the seller and told him I knew he sold me bootlegs and got some money back. Definitely avoid buying dragon Ball season sets on ebay unless you know for sure the sets are legit.

@@JmanRising Dude, if you ever get a bootleg, you should get a full refund period, and the amazon or ebay company will be on your side. If the person is knowingly selling bootlegs, they have MANY copies to sell, so in the future just get your full money back and ship them back the fake.
I had legit seasons 1 and 2 and just figured I would get around to getting 3-5 eventually. It wasn't until last night I realized how many bootlegs are out there now. The ones they make now are even cheaper and thinner. This video helped me be able to tell that the Season 3 that I bought from Mercari for 20 bucks brand new definitely wasn't a bootleg, and I bought Season 4 sold and shipped by Walmart which is pretty easy to find right now. Season 5 on the other hand... not so easy at the moment. Hopefully more prints will come to the Crunchyroll store soon because I see assholes selling these for 100 bucks a pop... that is when I can even find them.

I have a suspicion that the DBZ season Blu-rays also have bootleg box sets on eBay. At least from a few years ago. I have a legit one that I preordered on Amazon and then decided to buy another to keep unopened that I bought from eBay. They were priced much cheaper than Amazon and also looked slightly different in hand. The eBay one seemed like the box font was way darker than the legit Amazon one. I was moving boxes around recently and found them again. To this day I still wonder. And no I never opened the eBay one.

Mine came with no cardboard center pieces. Just dvd boxes with a cardboard slide cover
How do you know thus isn't just a reissue?
I can tell that the fake (bootleg) one has a bright blue and the real one has the normal blue. I have some Bootlegs but I'm planning to get rid of them and get the real ones besides the picture quality on the bootlegs are crappy but the real ones have a better picture quality.
Unfortunately I got a bootleg set on ebay last year and it cost like 60 bucks. I don't want to turn around and sell them so I'll probably just start hunting for legit copies.
Was the box like the real one or was it like the fake one like in the video?
@@GOOD4U360yes it was fake like in the video even the photos on the back with the screenshots of the episodes were beyond blurry. I was able to get an official copy of season one and compared it to the bootleg set.
@@jonphelps92 were did you get the officialand for how much? I bought 2 seasons at Best buy so I assume there legit. On ebay I bought a set and it looks legit. They have all photos of all seasons open and showing the disks and it looks like the legit version he explains in the video with the paper insert on the left and all the other details for $50 So I'm hoping there legit.

My DVDs 📀 came in today.
They were not in this brick style they were in thin regular dvd cases. They did have slip covers on them. I bought all five they were at a good price. Season 1 tho came cracked on the top corner. With others having some tears in the slips. I could honestly deal with some of the tearing but that cracked💩 is just €@#$%& up.
I gotta say though I prefer the cases over the brick style but I kinda wished the the cases were higher quality so they can’t break easily, and had the dragon puzzle on it, not to mention have neater slips, but overall the quality of the show itself are 1 to 1 with the official release, so not bad for a bootleg that’s actually cheap if you’re not trying to break the bank.

Funimation probably has a legit box set, but that amazon listing/seller is selling fakes.

I was actually just looking at a set on Kijiji and the pictures showed the season one box opened up with the exact same reversed image. Needless to say I won’t be buying those thanks to you.
It may explain why used listings always seem to have opened season one but not the others.
Just wanted to thank you again for this. I ordered a used set that was in really good shape because of this was confident what I was looking at was the real thing.

Also at amazon, but individually bought seasons that were "sold by amazon". Bootlegs were sold as a set (seasons 1 thru 5 in one listing) by a third party seller.

Late reply, but yeah. There’s no bootlegs of GT that I’m aware of (there’s not that much demand for them to begin with, so it’s not profitable for fraudulent sellers to invest in).

this that bullshit, i received a bootleg copy too today and didn't even know what i purchased. i just looked at the seller and assumed it was legit. im dumb cuz i even asked them to send pictures first but they said they couldn't their camera. i should've seen the bs from the start but i was really having an itch to buy it because i was really trying to make a dragon ball collection and their listing was the cheapest on ebay. their selling rating was good too and that's what ultimately made my decision but i should've seen their bs in the message they sent me from the start. im pissed but lesson learned IG.
Here in Chicago, these bootleggers go inside the movie theaters, copy them, and then try to sell them off as the real thing (I even saw a few in restaurants, just sitting there and bootlegging DVDs. Then they get mad when I tell them that I get official DVDs from the videos stores and Amazon lol. I said, "Jealous much?" lol). I get all of my DVDs directly from the physical video stores and Amazon (only if it says "Sold by Amazon").

The fakes suck. People say they’re good only because they’re cheap but the A/V quality is trash. I mean sure they’re cheaply priced but the real thing is too.

@@christron5368 I only had it happen once, but I've only watched through 3 of the discs before finding out they were fake and getting used official versions.
If you put them in a weak DVD player like a PLAYSTATION 3 and 4 yes... but on other devices LIKE xbox ONE X or stand alone player they just play fine...
These are both real legit copies, this is just your typical way of a company saving money specifically here with factory costs..... the later one is more faded to save on ink costs, thinner cardboard to save on the obvious, then they stopped shipping with those booklets and also started designing the package without the inside flap for that booklet... so totalling all those up and printing thousands and thousands of copies saves you a good chunk of change.... this is how they were able to sell them for so cheap and started getting cheaper later on around the same time they started making these changes....
No dude, these are fake. The seller knew it. Refunded me immediately when i said they were fake. Didn't ask for pictures or even bother to pay for shipping to return to them for inspection.

@@LupinTheLynx No I saw the entire video and the internal design being backwards could be a simple mistake in the factory..... the seller probably didn't even know what was going on and didn't want to have any problems so just accepted the return immediately and apologized..... the only way you would know for sure is if there were differences on the media itself..... another reason how I know this is because I have bought two complete sets of all Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and GT all from BestBuy..... my first set was as they were coming out on their release dates and then many years later on I went back and bought all sealed copies from Best Buy as well and noticed these differences the same as yours.... there would be no way possible that Best Buy would get a hold of bootleg copies because they get all of their media direct from the factories and always have because I work there for three and a half years back in 2009....
Whatever man. The quality is bad when compared directly - but without the side by side comparison bootlegs have gotten really good, and again the quality of the discs caused episodes to skip.
I bought $80 of seasons 1 thru 5 from the seller. A real vendor wouldnt just fork back $80 over no questions asked on legit product and let me keep it, just because i said it was a fake. They'd be out of business quick. You can only afford to do that when your stuff is fake.
There are many things wrong with my bootleg copy, all outlined in the video. The only way to protect yourself from a bootleg is to notice these kinds of discrepancies, and when there's this many things wrong, it's a fake.
Even if i were to believe that the 'legit' copies were of the quality outlined in my video, that is not acceptable because the drop in quality is abysmal and no one should pay for that level of trash quality
@@LupinTheLynx I agree and I was just giving you the information that I am familiar with and had experience with myself, quality control with a lot of Japanese animes has always been up and down notably this being one of them.... and also with my own experience working their Best Buy is not a company to risk theirselves over quality control issues such as this....
