  • Tips From The Video Vault: The Only REAL Way To Tell If Your DVD or Blu-ray Movie is a Bootleg
    Did you buy a movie cheap online, or secondhand and have a sinking feeling it might be a bootleg? There are plenty of ways to tell that it might be, but there's only one POSITIVE way to know for sure.
    Check out the "secret" in this video, and always know what you're buying!
    NOTE Obviously there is one big exception when it comes to a movie being a "bootleg" just because of the tip here - many independently produced movies and/or "burn on demand" titles, whether on DVD or Blu-ray, are not pressed discs, and will look just like this. As a filmmaker myself who uses duplication (as opposed to replication), my movies all look just like this - but as it's the only way they were released, they're still official. Companies like Warner Archives and even Amazon do "burn on demand" titles to save money. They're official, but they're still duplicated.
    Basically though, if it's a big-budget Hollywood movie (or even a high-end indie film) that shouldn't be a DVD-R or a BD-R, you've likely got yourself a bootleg!

    I just got a copy of Toy Story 4 on Blu-ray, and I felt there was something off about. The Slipcover cover was slightly different from the copies I've seen in stores, the back of the discs were different, and while it had the digital copy sticker it did not come with a code. Your video just helped me confirm it is a bootleg. Thanks.

    if anyone rips their blu-rays, one way to tell if a disc is a bootleg is to see if it has any encryption on it, like aacs. If it doesnt, it's most likely a bootleg (especially if its a larger release such as Star Wars, etc.)

    Now we have the problem here in USA where Paramount is creating on demand BD-R discs in case demand increases rather than “pressed” disc. It doesn’t mean it’s a pirated copy per-se because it is from the manufacturer, but personally I want pressed discs to ensure it is not a bootlegged version.

  • @kazolar2000
    @kazolar2000 3 роки тому +7

    The fact that a disk is a BD-R doesn't automatically make a fake -- studios started a thing called MOD where they do small runs of even bigger titles, and MOD disks are BD-Rs, they're available for movies which are older and are made post initial BluRay release. The one from wish could be fake or could be an MOD disk, you really can't tell.

    I have exactly 1 Bootleg, which looks 100% like an official Release.
    The Paper is the same, the Print looks great and is high quality.
    The Disc is printed exactly like a real one and the Back has neither Visible Data nor is Black but instead has the movie name printed in the little ring like an official Blu Ray.
    I know it is not an official Release as i even asked the seller but you could fool anyone.

    Thank you. Got burned today. You saved me. I don't know if you mentioned the barcode on the bottom inner circle but that's something the bootleggers can't duplicate , either.

    Thank you! Also, the main reason why pressed is better than burned is because pressed discs will last a lot longer. Burned discs will degrade much quicker due to the ink material that allows burning. So it's a trade off really based on price... are you willing to pay cheaper prices for burned media that may not work after some time? Or pay more for pressed media that supposedly lasts forever? This is why you see cheaper prices on eBay.

    another way to check (though it might not work for every title) is see if it is a dual-layer disc. The pirates cut costs as much as possible so they only use the single-layer discs. Your computer likely only has a DVD drive built in, if it has one at all, but you can get a Blu-ray drive for around $50.

    Wow, i just bought a movie off eBay, Volumes Of Blood: Horror Stories, and it was not cheap, it was around $20, but i just had a feeling, watching your video i bought a bootleg. Damn can't trust eBay...

      Brenn P you mean sellers on eBay... ebay bans people selling fake stuff. For example I’ve even bought fake blu rays on amazon and it pisses me off because here I thought it was better than ebay lol

    • @pointshootfilms3371
      @pointshootfilms3371 3 роки тому +1

      So I was about to say that Volumes of Blood is an indie film and they likely burned the movie on demand, but I checked my copy and it's pressed, so I'm not sure what you got. Perhaps it's a campaign backer copy, which often are burned on demand. So not a bootleg, per se, because it's from the company that made it. I didn't cover indie films in the video, so I'm sorry for the confusion.

    Btw. Is the non shiny and thicker "blu-ray" logo on the case of Baywatch for example, a sign of it being a bootleg movie? I have a copy of Hairspray and it has that odd thicker non shiny logo but it's not bootleg. However it's my only movie with a case like that. Is it perhaps a knock off or cheap case that the ebay seller I bought it from somehow got...but was selling the legit movie...or is it totally normal and just perhaps an older type of blu-ray case since theres many different types of blu-ray cases.

  • @slenderfoxx3797
    @slenderfoxx3797 4 роки тому +7

    All my blu-ray that I've ordered from online and have bought from stores look more silver with a hint of blue tint rather than gold...my dvds sometimes look golden (the dvds that also come with the blu-ray) however I've never seen a copy with the data ring. I always buy from trusted sellers and stores, the paper and case always look fine and the movie plays great. Is it the lighting of the room that makes them not look golden or is it perhaps just different from your country. Maybe they're made slightly different for you. Idk lol

    GOOD INFORMATION , How do you tell a bootleg from a MOD movie that allot of studios are making these days. Also do you happen to know if the MOD (made on demand) discs have less of a protective coating that a normal released dvd/blu ray and will they last as long and or scratch more.

    • @pointshootfilms3371
      @pointshootfilms3371 3 роки тому +2

      So that's one thing I didn't cover here, and I really should have. Obviously an MOD disc is also going to look like this, because it's burned as well. There are only a couple studios that do MOD regularly, such as Warner Archives, and they are very good about letting you know what's pressed and what's a burn. Overall though, if you're buying a major studio release and it looks like this, it's going to be a bootleg.

    You're mostly right but not quite 100% accurate . You're right in saying that mainstream Hollywood movies, if it has the Blue/Purple disk is going to be a bootleg BUT it isn't always the case. For smaller , indie movies such as low budget horror on independent labels may only produce a small amount of blu rays , some will print them to demand ( hence burn on demand ) . But these are legitimate authentic releases. As i said this will be exclusively small indie movies, that will have a very small audience. But it's not all movies with Burn on demand discs that will be a bootleg (but the majority will be ) . Another rabbit hole is Grey market releases . Im not sure if you're familiar with them . Not really anything in relation to your examples shown in the video , but it's an interesting 3rd option between a bootleg and an official studio release

      I wish I could post my recent acquisition of the OOP Scream Factory Blu Ray of Evilspeak. The print isn't fully centered, but the backside of the disc seems legit. However, my blu ray player doesn't include the title of the movie in the drive. It could be it wasn't encoded based on the date it was released by Shout as opposed to more recent ones? I'm concerned nonetheless.

    What about single-layer, versus dual-layer DVDs?
    I recently bought the complete series of "Breaking Bad", on Ebay. None of the discs show the data sections, that you show in the video. So they don't appear to be burned DVDs. However, the packaging was different, which made me suspicious.
    I went online, and found that nearly all legit DVD movies are dual-layer DVDs, which have a storage capacity of up to 8.5GB. When I put the first DVD, of the series, into my computer, it only shows a storage capacity of 4.7GB; which is single-layer capacity.
    So, I then went to my local library, and checked out the first season of "Breaking Bad". I popped the first DVD, into my computer, and it shows a storage capacity of 7.6GB; so it can't be single-layer. Does this mean that my Ebay purchase is bootleg, or pirated?

  • @reh3884
    @reh3884 3 роки тому +7

    Absolute nonsense. What you're talking about is determining if a disc is burnt or pressed. That does not tell you if it's a bootleg. Bootlegger will sell pressed discs. On the flip side, some legitimate discs are sold MOD (made on demand). It takes more than just looking at the bottom of a disc to know if it's a bootleg.

    hi Bob, I just bought a criterion blu ray disc. that was sealed New. When I opened it I am pretty sure its fake First of all there was fingerprints on the outside of the disc. Secondly the booklet that comes with the disc does not fit perfectly in the case. Criterion do not use ordinary cases because they supply larger booklets and the bluray case does not have a lip where the booklet fits into the case. Apart from that the printing looks high quality.The disc itself looks perfect no gap on inner disc. I compared to normal blueray and looks identical and colour is the same. I now cannot be 100% sure. Could it be that criterion have been sloppy on production.

    Of course Angus was the fake. Who in their right mind would fake copies of Baywatch or The Raven? I can buy those quite consistently for a Canadian dollar. Blu-rays generally aren't a gold colour for newer discs. The yellow/gold colour means either it's an original blu-ray and the disc is aged or a company purchased old stock of blank blu-rays to press their movie on. One of the telltale signs is if there is coding on the inner ring of the disc. Burnable CDs will not have this. This is not 100% either but is more foolproof if you're out and about purchasing used movies from stores.

    • @randybradley4151
      @randybradley4151 5 місяців тому

      Also many discs nowadays have a multi-coloured oily look to them. There is nothing wrong with this. This is a protective liquid placed on many newer discs to fight against disc rot and scratches.

    So, a gold bottom IS normal then? I have one Blu-ray movie that has a gold bottom, and that one looks EXACTLY like your copy of The Raven- as in you can't see the data to it, and according to Wikipedia, different brands of disc can have different colors, such as silver, gold, or grey, but since I only have a single Blu-ray with a gold bottom, I was unsure if that was a normal thing, or that if it was normal, it was probably more uncommon when compared to other ones!
