It’s one of my favorite shows ever. So many great songs played by so many great bands. Metallica and Lou Reed was great as well and I’m a huge Lou Reed guy.

Sweet! Very sweet! October 30, 2009 at Madison Square Garden -- 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concerts. U2 -- Because The Night (with Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, and Roy Bittan). Springsteen more or less wrote the song, gave it to Patti Smith, she added her touches and took the song to the tops of the charts in 1978. U2 took its name in 1978 and soon thereafter won £500 at a talent contest in Limerick. They used that prize money to record a demo and went to work touring Ireland while their new manager sought them a record deal. 1978 was also the year Springsteen released Darkness on the Edge of Town as the follow up to Born To Run. Springsteen changed his sound with that album and the added guitar edgeiness took a while to catch on with radio audiences. There is some romance in the idea that U2 listened to Darkness on the Edge of Town back then when they were an unsigned band, but I'll leave the truth of it for others. Springsteen often tore up on guitar like that during live shows back then, as the introduction to "Prove It All Night" at his 1978 show in Phoenix, Arizona demonstrates. Bruce Springsteen might have co-written it, but as far as I'm concerned it's Patti Smith's song 🎵, she's absolutely 💯 kickass
I agree, but Bruce rocks the roof off when he does it live.
Bruce was on strike with his record company at that time and so couple of other artists recorded some songs Bruce might have done and those versions were incredible this one that Patti and her band did. The Poiner Sister did another of Bruce’s song too.
Jimmy Iovine was producing both Bruce's album "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and Patti's "Easter" at the same time. Bruce was unable to finish "Because the Night" and allowed Iovine to bring in Patti to add lyrics to it and record her own version. So, it's actually co-written by the two. The melody is Bruce's but Patti contributed more than a couple of verses.
I'm pretty sure JI was just the engineer on Darkness, but otherwise, yes. Bruce already had the chorus, I believe.

Even though Patti is every bit the legend the others are and in fact has been active and known longer than either of them, she’s never been a stadium star and you can tell she is thrilled out of her mind to get a chance to air it out in front of an appreciative (large) crowd. She is belting it and smiling like you don’t often see IMO because she’s serious about what she’s singing and doing. So this was a treat even though Bono was kind of superfluous lol.
Interesting that Bruce sings the verse Patti wrote. Bruce wrote the chorus and the structure of the verse, but Patti fleshed it out. Check out Bruce's live version from 1978.
As others have mentioned, this was an unfinished track that Springsteen wrote for the Darkness album. He had the music and the chorus but the verses were unfinished.
Iovine was the connection between the two. Patti Smith re-wrote the verses for her version. Springsteen later finished writing the verses for his version which he started performing live in '78.
Both versions are great. The verse lyrics are completely different but both use Springsteen's original music and chorus.
Springsteen wrote and recorded the song, but didn't release it. Patti Smith rewrote the lyrics. There are lots of differences between Bruce's original lyrics and Smith's rewrite. The didn't directly collaborate. They both did smoking hot versions though. Bruce's was officially released years later.
It's good, but you really just want to hear Patti.
