    It's Saturday morning in the Dutch city of Haarlem, Netherlands and the open market is in full bloom. It's one of the larger and more lively market squares in all of Holland. Market day in a European city is generally a lot of fun. You get a chance to mingle around with the locals then have a look at the produce, and the cheese and the fruits and different clothing items for sale, participating like a resident - and maybe you'll find something good to eat.
    It's no surprise this big event is at the central market square right in the middle of town next to the big church.
    When traveling it's not always easy to strike up conversations with the locals but on market day everybody is ready to talk, so by all means have some chats with the vendors.
    If you don't find anything to eat at the market there are a number of cafés all around the market. There's a beautiful corner bar here - people kicking back watching the parade of people going by, having a drink or having a meal. It's a perfect spot for a break before plunging back into the market.
    The buildings all around the market square are beautiful and historic. Most of them date back to the 1600s. You've got the old meat market, you've got the weighing house, the City Hall, and the big church, the Grote Kerk, there is an archaeology museum and some former residences of the nobles.
    Well you can see how much fun this market is but you've got to be here on a Saturday to catch all of this action. So if you can possibly arrange your schedule, if you're staying in Amsterdam and you're around on a weekend, by all means come on over to Haarlem and have a walk around the market and then see the rest of town.
    We have more movies about Haarlem so be sure to have a look at our UA-cam channel and subscribe so you can be notified about all of our recent uploads. We've also got a series of films about the Netherlands covering many of the highlights of this beautiful country, stay tuned.

    The nicest thing of the Netherlands is that most of us are multi lingual, we do everything to make you feel comfortable and helping where we can. If you are also into "cheese" than visit Gouda, where the famous Gouda cheeses come from. The northside of the Netherlands ( Friesland, Groningen) is also worth to visit, especially for the lakes and sailing. 🇳🇱🤗

    Life never seems to happen in neighborhoods with architecture from mid 20th century to today’s 21st century. All these travel vlogs show the beauty of cities prior to that time. Nice tour of Haarlem, thank you!

    Harlem in NY is named after the city of Haarlem, Brooklyn deriving from the Dutch town called Breukelen and all that from a time long gone when New York was still called New Amsterdam.

    I live there :) I wasn't born in Haarlem, but I consider it home and never want to leave again. It is one of the oldest cities, but not as big or crowded as Amsterdam for example. It has great museums and architecture. And the trainstation is the oldest one in the Netherlands. I don't consider the market anything special though, there are better markets across the country, most famous is the Albert Cuyp market in Amsterdam, however that is much more tourism-based than this one. Another great thing about Haarlem is that it is famous for the huge veriety of restaurants and cafes. Visiting Haarlem during the day should result in having a great meal in one of the many restaurants in the small streets in the centre. And if the weather is good, perhaps have a nice, cold beer at one of the bars around the market place in the evening.

I've seen them a few times with tractors with wagon and a few with horse and wagon. And suddenly it was over. In the Brugstraat you still had a cheese warehouse where you could see the cheeses. There was also a cheese shop where I bought cheese. It smelled good in the shop. Greetings from Eastern Europe.

    Nice vid! We've lived in Haarlem the last thirty years or so and our kids are genuine 'muggen' or mosquitos, as the Haarlemmers tend to call themselves ( the origin of the nickname is not known for sure). It's a great place to live and work but real estate prices are skyrocketing which is tough for new buyers.

    Even though some of the shots are a little "off" (which can easily happen when you work alone, which I think you do), I like this style of video's ten, no I think a hundred times more than selfie-style travel video's that only feature the person talking on camera instead of voice-overing stuff with accompanying footage about what the voice-over is talking about. Great video. A lot of cities and villages have a weekly outdoor market. My city has one in basically every neighbourhood and I think Haarlem has that as well.

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  6 років тому +1

      Hi DutchMaster, thanks very much for that and I wholeheartedly agree. Yes, I work alone, on the run, so sometimes the shot is not perfect, but my game is grabbing as much as possible in the time I've got. I also dislike that ridiculous me-me-me-me selfie handheld iPhone crap that clutters the world, or the endless visuals without any comment. It takes me along time to edit the show, but I generally create a new 15-minute show for upload every Friday. Narrating, coming up with something worth saying, is often the hardest part. It's a good thing I had some training, writing 55 long travel articles for my local newspaper and a guidebook about Rome, putting my English degree to work.

    Bicycles are so popular in holland because the country is flat as a dutch pannakoek. No hills. Just a wind that always blows against you no matter what direction you are headed!.

      + John Smith.. It snows, and rains, and gets cold all over the world.. But it's not flat as a pancake all over the rest of the world. If you could deal with hills by wearing the appropriate garments, without needing a Superman cape, I'd love to know, living as I do now in a terribly mountainous area... ;-)

In the morning most mothers bring the kids (from 4 to 8 years old) to school by bike with a front and rear seat, and on the way home picking up the daily fresh groceries from a supermarket or an outdoor market like this. It saves a lot of time doing it like that because no time is wasted while looking at the bumper of the car in front of you and/or for a place to park the car.

    4:45 he says it seems everybody has a bicycle. Dutch data say more bikes than people. One to transport the kids to school, one to ride in town, one cross country, one race, one folding to complement either end of a public transportation leg, an old cheap one to get to the train station on the home end and 2nd old cheap one to get from the other end station to the office. As bikes without auxiliary motor have no speed limit, you also want one with an aerodynamic hull to get you around pedaling at 40 mph.

      sm vanwers and you speak from personal experience? Having lived there, the only bikes without gears are the hire bicycles and the OV-fiets, the rest all are geared ranging from 3 to 8 internal or the sportier bikes up to 18. Please, stop spouting nonsens...

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  5 років тому +2

      you are right...according to Wikipedia:
      Holland is a region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands. The name Holland is also frequently used informally to refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands. This usage is commonly accepted in other countries,[2] and sometimes employed by the Dutch themselves.[2] However, some in the Netherlands, particularly in other regions of the country than Holland, may find it undesirable[2] or misrepresentative.
      From the 10th to the 16th century, Holland proper was a unified political region within the Holy Roman Empire as a county ruled by the Counts of Holland. By the 17th century, the province of Holland had risen to become a maritime and economic power, dominating the other provinces of the newly independent Dutch Republic.
      The area of the former County of Holland roughly coincides with the two current Dutch provinces of North Holland and South Holland in which it was divided, which together include the Netherlands' three largest cities: the de jure capital city of Amsterdam; Rotterdam, home of Europe's largest port; and the seat of government of The Hague.

    Haarlem is not the biggest market in The Netherlands.
    Vegetables and fruit on the market are no different than the one in the supermarkets, they are cheaper.
    Markets are efficient shopping, because everything is in one place. Especially fish and flowers are there in a bigger variety than in the supermarkets. A lot of cities run a special market for flowers and fish on the same day. And I love that because can’t stand the smell of fish.
