I moved from Australia to Gouda three years ago and love it here! The people are great and everyone is friendly and I live in the centre of the old historical town.
Dutch trains are indeed magnificent. I would suggest staying in Utrecht (right in the centre of the country) and using Utrecht as a base to explore the whole country. That saves on packing and unpacking every 2-3 days!
As a Dutchman I approve this message. Because the country is so small travel time is minimal. So if youre staying a week in Utrecht, you can basically go see every corner of the country.
Make sure not to go by train on rush hours during the week. Unlike you like standling like a sardine in a tin can. Also avoid going in autumn and the winter, the trains can't handle falling leaves and snow so well so trains often get cancelled and you have to go by bus.

In most videos you need to watch it to know the cities. For those who are in a hurry it's not very good. Thank you for putting the cities' name in the title! I still watched until the end!
That's why I put timecode links in the description, so you can quickly jump. I also have many individual movies about these cities, 22 in this playlist ua-cam.com/play/PLke86NFI6R8yHA2T5e7P38pniCONuuN_3.html

You should visit Dordrecht too: that's were The Netherlands as a nation came to be. It's a very nice 800 years old city just 25 kilometers from Rotterdam, best visited by boat, with hundreds of monuments, art stores, fine restaurants, canals, etc. etc.
101st Airborne landed near Eindhoven, 82nd Airborne landed near Nijmegen. I would think these would be worthwhile destinations for an American. The 82nd actually landed some distance away near the town of Groesbeek. From hindsight it was of one the contributing factors that Market Garden failed, it was not because of lack of heroism of the soldiers of the 82nd. They fought their way all the way to the Nijmegen bridge and did a flanking maneuver by crossing the Waal river. The area where they first landed is still called 'Little America'. Kind regards and thanks for your videos.
thanks for sharing, we are planing to go there on Sept or Oct. need to find for hotel near transport and restaurants. we are not young anymore, last time we stayed in the Hague 1985.
Great video and it has made me feel so much better! I had the bad luck to be born in England, which is now deeply embarrassing. But my great-grandfather was Dutch; his surname was deGroot. So now at least one eighth of me is from "an excellent country". (One of my great-grandmothers was Romany, but I´ve no idea where she was from.) Thank you.
if i may give you a traveling tip, based on this video, you are visting "older/historic"citys and towns. which are all very beautyful. if you ever come back to this country, i would love to suggest to go to deventer or zutphen, whom are very beautyful too. other than that i want to thank you for showing a loverly clip about the netherlands.
Thank you very much, they are already on my list of places to go next. There are many I'm considering, what do you think to narrow it down? Amersfoort; Arnhem; Breda; Den Bosch; Deventer; Dordrecht; Enkhuizen; Groningen; Hattem; ‘S Hertogenbosch; Hoorn; Houten; Kampen; Kinderdijk; Leeuwarden; Middelburg; Muiderslot; Nijmegen; Ootmarsum; Schiedam; Swollen; Zaandam; Zutphen; Zwolle;
@@denniscallan den bosch == 's hertogenbosch (just like den haag == 's gravenhage) you can cross off one there. i don't know any swollen, probably a phonetic form of "zwolle" another one you can cross off i can only speak for arnhem, breda, den bosh, deventer, dordrecht, groning and kinderdijk, never visited the other places except for passing through nijmegen: never been there, but it is the oldest city with city rights iirc, so i guess it's a keeper for historical purposes. muiderslot: idem dito, but extremely old dutch history and a pretty sight to behold the old keep. arnhem: legendary from world war 2, another historical landmark, played a gig there with my band like 15 years ago, friendly folk, nice city to stroll through with little shops everywhere (at the time) deventer: has a big old square with a church on it, and a big old kettle from back in the middle ages where they used to boil witches in, pretty grim shit, got a lot of modern shit mixed in too, prett good night life, nice town to have a beer. anyway, the southeastern parts of the country are the most influenced by catholicism and have their construction style, big old squares, with big old catherdrals groningen: very lively city with tons of students keeping it going. leeuwarden and middelburg may be nice there's actually a night train going all the way from vlissingen by the hour (with middelburg just a stop before) that goes through amsterdam, so you could pick those up along the way whilst catching some sleep :P i would suggest texel too, the biggest island we have, you could cover some den helder (the city from where the boat to the island goes, has the navy headquarters too) and a bit of the "waddenzee" maybe while you're at it, we even have seals over there, when you look north from texel, you can almost see the end of the world from there lol. nothing but sea. kinderdijk with the little mills and the high up polders is kind of bread and butter dutch shit, kinda like lisse and the keukenhof :D personally not all that blown away by dordrecht. breda is nice, tilburg isn't half bad either, but a fucking maze to navagate by bike, eindhoven is cool too. they're all in the vicinity.
@@denniscallan My favourites out of these cities are: Arnhem, Nijmegen, Den Bosch, Zutphen, Deventer and Zwolle. Zutphen, Deventer and Zwolle are the more well known dutch hanseatic cities with a great history. Especially Zutphen is underapreciated and has a beautiful historic city center. Arnhem is where I live and played a big role in the ending of WWII. A big part of the city was destroyed and rebuild over the years and it's fascinating to see the old and the new next to each other. Nijmegen has a history that goes as far back as the Roman Empire. Nijmegen was on the border of the roman empire. Nijmegen also has beautiful parks. Den Bosch is also a great city with beautiful historic buildings and canals (although the canals are more hidden than in cities like Amsterdam and Utrecht). The city centre feels to me very "gezellig" as we dutch people say.
I would like to one day live in the Netherlands. I quickly dropped Amsterdam as an idea after hearing it's mostly just busy and full of tourists. Delft looks lovely tho, the description is everything I want
From Alkmaar you should take the bus to: Schermerhorn, Schermerdijk to visit: "De Museummolen " and see old windmills. (Line: 123 or Line: 129) It's also possible to visit the famous Zaanse Schans by train, railway station: "Zaandijk Zaanse Schans "
If someone's reading this and thinking of doing a similar trip, I recommend visiting even more places if you're also going 3 weeks. Most of these cities aren't all that large and you can see pretty much all of it within a day or less usually. Because of this I'd recommend visiting some other towns and cities, since you'll be able to see most of them in a couple hours. I personally think it would be most interesting to visit some more cities in the east, like the historical cities of Nijmegen and Groningen. Edit: I would also recommend renting a bicycle. The biking infrastructure is great, there's virtually no hills, and it will allow you to get to many more places and see much more in a shorter time span.
You could squeeze more cities into 21 days, but I enjoyed the relaxed pace of 2 or 3 nights in each of the 9 places. There are many more places to visit, so save something for repeat visits: Amersfoort; Apeldoorn; Arnhem; Breda ; Den Bosch; Deventer; Dokkum; Dordrecht - Dortrecht; Edam; Eindhoven; Enkhuizen; Groningen; Hattem; ‘S Hertogenbosch; Hoorn; Houten; Kampen; Kinderdijk; Leeuwarden; Marken; Middelburg; Muiderslot; Nijmegen; Ootmarsum; Schiedam; Sneek; Swollen; Thorn; Veere; Volendam; Zaandam; Zaanse Schans; Zierikzee; Zutphen; Zwolle;
@Daan Made in Holland Wtf everyone uses bikes not just poor people. And the train isn't for poor people, it is quite expensive. Stop spreading lies kid.
The Northern part of the Netherland has great cities like Groningen, Leeuwarden and Zwolle. The Northern Islands are great to visit, Terschelling is my favourite.
Unfortunately some slightly more excentric situated cities but also very pretty cities are not presented as worthwile to visit: Breda, Den Bosch, Middelburg, Amersfoort, Nijmegen, Zwolle, Groningen, Leeuwarden. Then there are very much smaller places with are interesting to visit; Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Volendam, Edam, Marken, Zaanse Schans, Kinderdijk, Zierikzee, Veere, Dokkum, Sneek, Thorn, Apeldoorn...
There are more cities that are worth visiting but I didn't get there on this trip. I did spend a month traveling around to the cities in this video, and Amsterdam, and look forward to going back and seeing more.
Nice video you make about holland. Top video. We have more old smalle towns in the nord and east. Bike yes it Dutch. I live in rotterdam i was born there.
Regarding the outdoor cafes/restaurants in your videos of the Netherlands....do you have to wait to be seated or can you just find an open table and wait for a server?
Belgium is also nice and next door, so you might consider including a few Belgian cities. I agree there is more to see in Netherlands, a bigger country with a dozen major destinations, very easy to get around by train.
Yes, thank you, gives me something to do next time. It is pretty hard to cover 40 towns in 16 minutes, but I am aware of them. The Dutch Tourism Office selected some additional cities that travelers often overlook, each a real hidden gem with a unique ambiance and charm: Amersfoort; Arnhem; Breda; Den Bosch; Eindhoven; Groningen ; Leeuwarden; Nijmegen; Hanzesteden; Zwolle. There are lots of other special towns to discover, such as: Apeldoorn; Deventer; Dokkum; Dordrecht; Edam; Enkhuizen; Hattem; ‘S Hertogenbosch; Hoorn; Houten; Kampen; Kinderdijk; Marken; Middelburg; Muiderslot; Ootmarsum; Schiedam; Sneek; Swollen; Thorn; Veere; Volendam; Zaandam; Zaanse Schans; Zierikzee; and Zutphen, SOME DAY.
@@TheFreedutch2008 thank you, thank you, from a native it means a lot. I am nearly finished creating my detailed picture guidebook based on the series.
There are a lot of options to get discounts, but just buying a ticket at the train station the setup fee is about 2 Euro and 20 eurocents per kilometer!
I like Rotterdam the most. A waterfront modern city since I’m from HK. But why the sky is not always blue I hope there’s more sunshine. Otherwise it’s perfect
Very nice video, I lived in a few of these cities. Delft is my town now. Den Haag is a fun discussion at parties. Is it a city or not? They say it never got it's city rights, others say it did...I don't care as it's big we tend to see it as a city, but it's actually a village to some haha

there's actually a night train going all the way from vlissingen by the hour (with middelburg just a stop before) that goes through amsterdam, so you could pick those up along the way whilst catching some sleep :P
i would suggest texel too, the biggest island we have, you could cover some den helder (the city from where the boat to the island goes, has the navy headquarters too) and a bit of the "waddenzee" maybe while you're at it, we even have seals over there, when you look north from texel, you can almost see the end of the world from there lol. nothing but sea.
kinderdijk with the little mills and the high up polders is kind of bread and butter dutch shit, kinda like lisse and the keukenhof :D
personally not all that blown away by dordrecht.
breda is nice, tilburg isn't half bad either, but a fucking maze to navagate by bike, eindhoven is cool too.
they're all in the vicinity.
The tourists are in Amsterdam for a reason… It is really beautyful!!!
Love your videos man.
Very informative, way more than Rick Steves.
Very great place. Nice video
From Alkmaar you should take the bus to: Schermerhorn, Schermerdijk to visit: "De Museummolen
"
and see old windmills. (Line: 123 or Line: 129)
It's also possible to visit the famous Zaanse Schans by train, railway station: "Zaandijk Zaanse Schans
"
There's more to the country than just the cities. You should visit the countryside next. See the polders, windmills and dams.
What towns do you recommend?
leiden ist just amazing, i really like this city.
The one time you could have used "Holland" in the title ^_^
Great video, btw. I enjoyed it very much.
Nice video sir.👌👌
My country the Nederlands is the best. I really love it and the dutch language is the best in the whole world
Don't forget " mural city" Heerlen if you want to visit the rural areas..
You could squeeze more cities into 21 days, but I enjoyed the relaxed pace of 2 or 3 nights in each of the 9 places. There are many more places to visit, so save something for repeat visits: Amersfoort; Apeldoorn; Arnhem; Breda ; Den Bosch; Deventer; Dokkum; Dordrecht - Dortrecht; Edam; Eindhoven; Enkhuizen; Groningen; Hattem; ‘S Hertogenbosch; Hoorn; Houten; Kampen; Kinderdijk; Leeuwarden; Marken; Middelburg; Muiderslot; Nijmegen; Ootmarsum; Schiedam; Sneek; Swollen; Thorn; Veere; Volendam; Zaandam; Zaanse Schans; Zierikzee; Zutphen; Zwolle;
Very beautiful cities. People have environmental awareness. Mostly moving by bicycles. Or prefer to walk. Excellent culture. 👍👌
@Daan Made in Holland Wtf everyone uses bikes not just poor people. And the train isn't for poor people, it is quite expensive. Stop spreading lies kid.
Daan Made in Holland nonsense, I’m not poor, but when I go to cities in the summer, I do like to take the train. Because it’s relaxing and easy.
Lovely.
Thank you
Lovely country and video 💙💙
Beautiful but so crowded
Liden is beautiful Town in Netherlands
Very beautiful explore
Make videos for all europe country like this
City wise
You should visit Arnhem.
Geboren in Den Haag, opgegroeid en getrouwd in Maastricht. In het mooie oude stadhuis. Nu woon ik in Louisiana USA.
google translate: Born in The Hague, raised and married in Maastricht. In the beautiful old town hall. Now I live in Louisiana USA.
The Northern part of the Netherland has great cities like Groningen, Leeuwarden and Zwolle. The Northern Islands are great to visit, Terschelling is my favourite.
Great video thank you. Finaly a video that doesn't go about the coffeeshops. I live in Utrecht. You should go to Nijmegen as wel the next time
It's on my list, thanks: Amersfoort; Apeldoorn; Arnhem; Breda ; Den Bosch; Deventer; Dokkum; Dordrecht - Dortrecht; Edam; Eindhoven; Enkhuizen; Groningen; Hattem; ‘S Hertogenbosch; Hoorn; Houten; Kampen; Kinderdijk; Leeuwarden; Marken; Middelburg; Muiderslot; Nijmegen; Ootmarsum; Schiedam; Sneek; Swollen; Thorn; Veere; Volendam; Zaandam; Zaanse Schans; Zierikzee; Zutphen; Zwolle.

Respect for the Dutch g-sound in Gouda.
Fabulous. Dennis I was curious to know what camera and lens you use to film the video. Look very nice
I used a SONY 4K FS5, semi-professional camera, interchangeable lens, excellent
OMG!!! I miss old Europe....tables in front of restaurants and bars...non of those in New York :(
Come back, Kora! Good old Europe is waiting for you
New York,,,,New Amsterdam.
The did somthing wrong there.
Redbad van Rijn they sure did! Well, still got Harlem and Brooklyn to represent ofc
Unfortunately some slightly more excentric situated cities but also very pretty cities are not presented as worthwile to visit: Breda, Den Bosch, Middelburg, Amersfoort, Nijmegen, Zwolle, Groningen, Leeuwarden. Then there are very much smaller places with are interesting to visit; Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Volendam, Edam, Marken, Zaanse Schans, Kinderdijk, Zierikzee, Veere, Dokkum, Sneek, Thorn, Apeldoorn...
myutubechannel I agree about Apeldoorn but Breda is a really nice city in the province Noord-Brabant.
Ah, someone who recognizes the pearl that is Thorn
I'd add Arnhem and Dordrecht to the list too
Wow, now I've got 34 cities to see in future visits, thanks to you and other commenters and my research: Amersfoort; Apeldoorn; Arnhem; Breda ; Den Bosch; Deventer; Dokkum; Dordrecht - Dortrecht; Edam; Enkhuizen; Groningen; Hattem; ‘S Hertogenbosch; Hoorn; Houten; Kampen; Kinderdijk; Leeuwarden; Marken; Middelburg; Muiderslot; Nijmegen; Ootmarsum; Schiedam; Sneek; Swollen; Thorn; Veere; Volendam; Zaandam; Zaanse Schans; Zierikzee; Zutphen; Zwolle;
@@denniscallan Dutchie here; I'd skip Apeldoorn (only Palace 't Loo is worthwhile), Dokkum, Edam, Hattem, Houten, Kampen, Marken, Ootmarsum, Schiedam and Zaandam tbh. I'd add Castle Haarzuylens, National Park Hoge Veluwe & the Efteling tho.
Excellent! Thanks !!
Dennis, What were you're favorite cities in the Netherlands?
All of those in the movie. And we also must include Amsterdam, which I'll deal with in a later movie.
@@denniscallan did some cities not make it to UA-cam?
There are more cities that are worth visiting but I didn't get there on this trip. I did spend a month traveling around to the cities in this video, and Amsterdam, and look forward to going back and seeing more.
@@denniscallan thanx man, great vids👍
My country to be,come December 🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️💕

Oh no, i'm from Leiden, but you really forgot Sneek, Leeuwarden, Groningen, 's-hertogenbosch and Harlingen.
I agree visit Leeuwarden! Highly underrated
Ah joh, het zal wel..😉

Regarding the outdoor cafes/restaurants in your videos of the Netherlands....do you have to wait to be seated or can you just find an open table and wait for a server?
slug worth you can just find a table and wait for the server.
If you must wait for a table, you know there serving good food, for a decent price.
best coutry in europe for sure

The film is suberb. I go make Nederlands by train in summer!
Wow I am changing my Belgium trip to netherlands
Belgium is also nice and next door, so you might consider including a few Belgian cities. I agree there is more to see in Netherlands, a bigger country with a dozen major destinations, very easy to get around by train.
I love Netherlands
I went to Nederlands August 2022 and this country on my opinion is wonderful in everything!!
im dutch btw. and you pronounce the G preety good!
Please can anyone recommend which place to visit????
Amsterdam ofcourse. ❌❌❌
No Eindhoven😩spent three weeks their on business and did see Amsterdam on weekends also trip to Bastogne, Belgium.👍💯❤️
You can get drunk and eat and have fun, but Eindhoven is ugly. Not a good destination for tourists.
you missed Groningen Arnhem, Breda, Bergen op zoom, Den Bosch, Goes, Middelburg just to mention a couple.
@@denniscallan it is a great video, loved it.
And of course I'm from the Netherlands
@@TheFreedutch2008 thank you, thank you, from a native it means a lot. I am nearly finished creating my detailed picture guidebook based on the series.
Maastricht is my favorite
Cool
Please, visit Den Bosch. 👍
My best regard for u...
I from Indonesia...
Helaas. Den Bosch niet genoemd. Ook leuk. What about Den Bosch. A very nice little city too.
Yes, agreed, I went there a few months ago, will make new video in near future.
How much does the train cost?
There are a lot of options to get discounts, but just buying a ticket at the train station the setup fee is about 2 Euro and 20 eurocents per kilometer!
@@hendrikbijloo Ok thank you :)
NS's price are NOT EXPANSIVE?????? THANK YOU SIR!!!!!!!!!
