How to Powder Coat a Step by Step Powder Coating Process
You have asked for it, so we've given it to you. It's the 710 Performance step by step guide to powder coating. This is how we do our powder coating process step by step. Is it the best way, maybe not. Does it work for us? Yes! Are we always learning, YES!
If you're just starting your powder coating business, we're hoping that this will help you with some of the questions you may have about the powder coating process. If you're powder coating at home, or want to learn how to powder coat at home, this should be a great video for you and other DIY powder coaters.
The powder coating system we use is the Eastwood Elite HotCoat PCS 1000 powder coating system (bit.ly/hotcoat.... The oven we use we built ourselves. It's propane powered.
We purchase most of our powders from Prismatic Powders (prismaticpowde...) but we do also purchase from Powder Buy the Pound (powderbuythepo...)

Impressive you actually made a video on how to powder coat, big thumbs up for actually listening to the people.
Sexy Rodriguez thank you!
Your best video yet. Keep up the good work. Awesome color!
Thank you! Will do! Yeah that color is extremely amazing!
Great video. I like the how to videos and the fact that you explain how and why - keep it up and give us more 😉
Anders Hoxer thank you! Will do! 🤙
@@710performance you said in the video 2 punds of powder might not be enough, so how much did you end up using??
Anders Hoxer we only ended up using about a pound and a half 🤙
@@710performance Cool. Thanks for the answer.
Keep it up and stay safe 💪👍
Anders Hoxer NP! Thanks for your support 🤙 Glad we can help! 🤙
Exellent job, step by step, do you take the tires off or receive only the rims? if not how do manage to deal with dose sensitive electronic air pressure sensor devises, thanks for your attention
We have the wheels brought to us only with the tires removed. Sometimes people have left the TPSM attached, and they are actually pretty easy to takeoff.
That's a badass color. Great job😎
Thank you!
First, Thanks for this amazing video! I have a question about the curing process. When do you start your timer for the curing time? Once the piece has reached target temperature? or do you let the piece reach the target temperatura and once this happens the curing process is done, I'm a bit confused on this phase of the powder coat process, thanks!
You start the time once the part has reached curing temperature
@@710performance ok, thank you. Do you guys have a subscription so that I can contribute to your channel and get a couple more questions answered? I’m beginning a small powder coat shop..
Is the blasting stage necessary even if all the paint came off? I heard you can just jet wash them after acid dip and powder coat straight away without the blaster? Is that true?
You can do it without a blaster, but you'll still have to sand the wheels or use a wire brush wheel. But no you cannot take it right from the strip tank, rinse and powder coat.
Appreciate the step by step! thanks!
No problem!
That came out killer homies. Nice work on both the video, and on the wheel. Keep it up
Most appreciated fam! They did come out super clean! We don’t plan on stopping! We just got some new equipment to offer more services in the shop 🤙
710 Performance ooooo.... I’m guessing painting and... blast cabinet? The harbor freight cabinet will piss you off, Jump straight to a bigger one. I promise. Don’t make the same mistake I did. 😋
Wicked Powder oh we were not planning to get a harbor freight one lol already know it’s WAY TO SMALL!
Man yall have been an isperation to start my own business coating i have been doing for almost a year but yall have givven me the isperation to make it a legitimate business now i just have to get a better gun then this harbor Freight one
You can do it!
710 Performance thank you for the boost in confidence
Hi Sir just a question,do you need a base coat for that color? Thank you
It’s a single stage color. 👍
Good day sir, great vlog, just a question, where did you buy that bronze powder coat,?thank you
From Prismatic Powders
What did you use for media and at what psi?
Green Diamond 70/40 @ 90 PSI
Do you clear over the top mate, mint wheels
Thank you. Yes we do
Great video. Thanks for sharing your tips.
Thank you! Hope it helps!
So is there really no need for a primer or clear or is that optional and extra? Also how much of a benefit is it to have primer and clear? Does the clear provide UV protection from color fade? And does a primer actually make it more durable?
Appreciate the video!
Primer is usually (but not always) used with steel not aluminum, although you can you don’t have too. Clear coat is optional, but is also does cost extra. Primer does make it more durable and depending on the clear coat it can provide UV stability and protect it from fading, but make colors do not need it, but it’s good for extra protect and some colors require a clear coat
@@710performance Thanks, I appreciate it!
Well worth the sub! Great videos man keep it up! Im still a newbie at powder coating and hoping to learn more from your channel. I plan on stripping some aluminum wheels next week, but dont have to any chemical strip. Will taking it to a media blaster be sufficient enough? I’ll be using glass beads(fine grit) thanks!
That should work just fine, you can strip without chemical stripper, it just takes a bit longer. Thank you for the sub! We appreciate your support!
Top job boss man need to clean that shop up thou. But the work is💥💥💥
Yes the shop needs cleaned up a good one, we're waiting to move to a larger shop so we have more room! =) Thanks for your support!
Can't wait boss keep up the good work 💪
Tristan Edmumds will do!
Great helpful information! So it’s okay to put aluminum in the rim strip?
Yes just check it often.
710 Performance what size were those wheels? Look like they barely fit.. I wanna do some 24’s any idea on how I can fit those into some rim strip? Also the wheels are chrome does the chrome remove in the rim strip?
King PrettyFlacko they were 19’s. We’re looking at a 275 gallon tote for larger items.
710 Performance the wheels that I’m trying to do are chrome do you know if the chrome will come off with that chemical strip?
King PrettyFlacko I do know, it won’t. Going to have to media blast it off or use a chrome stripper. We don’t usually mess with chrome wheels and if we do we charge a lot of money to blast it off.
Do you reclaim that blasting media?
We do not at this time. We will be getting a small blasting cabinet, but we do like the fact of using clean media all the time as it save us extra steps in our process. We also get the media pretty cheap, less than $8 for 50 lbs. With the time we save from having additional steps sometimes off sets it pretty well.
Do you need to use primer ?
You don’t have to, it’s a good practice but it’s also more material and more time so it’s best to charge Accordingly. Sometimes customers don’t want to pay the extra
what fan do you have in the spray booth?
a 10 cfm grow fan
Im on the fence about trying to learn how to do it
Go for it!
What color is that from Prismatic?
Super Rootbeer
@@710performance correction??? Video distinctly says Bronze Chrome IS the base coat
s=and the guy that asked 2-3 folks after you got the Bronze Chrome answer as well
Nice job 💪
Matthias zluhcS thank you! 🤙
What color is it? And from where?
It’s Bronze Chrome 🤙
Charles Lara from Prismatic Powders
Thank you sir
@@charleslara4074 NP!
You should put what part of the video series we are looking at so we can start at the begining.
Ok we can do that! Thanks for the feedback and the support! =)
What is "OUT Gas"?
When you heat the piece you are working on for an extended period of time to release all of the oils and gasses that may be trapped in the metal. It's best to outgas then media blast it as to ensure the parts is completely clean.
Where do you get the rim strip
Clayton Diamond from Matt (314) 398-4932 let him know 710 Performance sent you.
@@710performance is there any way I can message you I built basically the same powder coating set up you have and I have some questions
Clayton Diamond sure you can message us on our Instagram @710performance
How much would a job like this cost?
cesar henriquez About $600
Hahaha…damn homie. Turn the feed down. Waaaaaayyyy down. Your dumping powder on that wheel. Lol
Old system, that one was not too good at turning the powder flow down, so we ended up upgrading. Thanks for the tip though.
@@710performance the wheels turn out great tho👉💪 you should check out SpectraCoat. They make a wonderful system and it won’t break the bank. Hands down one of the best I’ve owned. Great for those faraday cages and other tight spots. I’m in no way associated with spectra coat either. Check them out and keep up the good work brother💪
