After reading many UA-cam comments both on our channel as well as other powder coating videos, we noticed there was a need for information on how to start your own powder coating business at home.
So we decided to make a small series of videos that will hopefully help to you to achieve just that, start your own powder coating company from home.
In this first video you will learn about registering your powder coating business with your states Secretary of State, as well as learn how to identify your target market.
Starting a powder coating company is much more then just powder coating parts for customers, you first have to find your niche on where you're going to find those customers. We explain how to do just that in this video.

You mentioned building a portfolio and that is ultra important, almost priority #1 for me. No better way to drum up more business than having a gallery people can browse through to see your work. Something else to keep in mind is taking QUALITY pictures of everything you do. I see people post on those Facebook groups you mentioned and their pictures are horrible. Low lighting, dim lit room, yellow lighting, camera flashes, etc. In my opinion people should have a spot in the shop or outside where you can take quality pictures (preferably with the business logo in the background!). I love sending progress pics to customers and sending dark or blurry photos just makes them nervous about the finished product. Just make sure nothing is in the background, or grab a nice mat and take it outside in the sunlight and do a mini photoshoot. The sun always brings out the best in powder finishes in my opinion.
I agree quality pictures are very important, may I suck at taking pictures LOL but I am getting better, if you just continue to work at it you can get better! Keep getting that portfolio together and thank you very much for your support!

Glad you started this video series it's just what I need. I've started coating my own bike parts and friends have been paying me to do theirs. So I've decided to make it a small business. I retire from the Army in a few months. I am currently building a 30x40 shop, built my own blasting cabinet and purchased a dual voltage eastwood gun but I need to win that Hot coat but when I get the cash I LOVE the new system you just got it is awesome! But anyway perfect timing for me on this series thanks Brother!

im glad someone has started making videos like this ive been doing small jobs with my eastwood dual voltage gun but nervous to take on bigger more complex jobs due to the lack of consistency i get with the gun.
That makes sense. Just know that system is not perfect, so the more you can work with it the better you'll get. Hope this series continues to help!
Sounds like a great series. I started powder coating for my projects, now seems like about 1/2 my time is doing it for folks in our car club. They supply the powder and time to sandblast their parts (my garage, blast cabinet, and such) and I provide help spraying and baking. This probably is the next step, but us hot rod guys stick together and help each out when we can, so probably could make some money doing it by offering really good prices. Be interesting to see where both the series and my “hobby” goes. Thanks again for sharing. Sounds like you have been down this road a couple of times.

Very helpful. I can’t wait for the in-depth videos. Powder coating is my side hustle, I don’t do much advertising, just posting on FB and Instagram, but most of my business comes from word of mouth and I’ve got a lot of business. I just have a hell of a time pricing my time/project. I know I shoot myself in the foot a lot! Keep up the good work, your videos are very helpful

Such a nice thing to do, Thank so much. Following a motorbike accident , for the first time in my life i found unemployed and finally forced to find an professional activity i can do from home to fit with my physical abilities. When I get the ball rolling my goals are to share my knowledge with them as well and maybe get a few of the guys from my PTSD group to come up to my garage on the weekends and get them engage on it and spend some quality time with them (after the whole Covid-19 thing gets resolved).
I'm an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran and I've experience first hand the nightmare living with PTDS can be and having lost a handful of brothers and sister due to suicide, I'm sure it'll be a great outlet for them as well. I am new to your Channel and I like what you post I can relate to this.well i just started with harbor freight gun and a lil toaster. I liked it and started posting on instagram people started asking for bigger parts so i got a stove and been using the oven with a propane tank in my garage. Still learning and growing still trying to get better equipment but still out of my budget.
It all takes time (and sometimes more than others as I'm sure you know) just keep plugging away. We do have some good advice in our business videos that may help you to grow your business, getting you more jobs and allowing you to get that new equipment.

I have a year experience using parker ionics equipment at my factory job i paint all day for hours and was wondering what equipment setup you would recommend for me to start my small business, i want it to be reliable and simple so maybe a box feeder setup. This is great i was rite in this i think im ready to start stage and been trying to find some good info to start on the rite path. As far as the lower prices would you ever consider giving someone a great deal like almost free labor for a customer that might have a decent amount of followers on social media for your target demographic in exchange for a couple of postings or just stick to doing good work for cheap and letting the quality and price do the talking?
You've got the right idea. It's something we have done, and will be talking about more in future videos, but that is exactly right! We've even done it for free just for one post. It really depends no the "influencer" but again you're on the right track!

It really depends on what parts and colors you want to do. Many people start with the Eastwood Duel voltage or even the Eastwood HotCoat PCS 1000. We started with both of those.
What would you say an average powdercoater shop owner geared towards cars and manifolds wheels etc profit after overhead is we are jumping in and super excited just trying to figure out what profits after overhead usually are let’s just say on the lower end
To be honest, it’s really hard to say an average, there are many things that come into affect, too many things to really give an average.
Definitely want to set up a company to protect yourself. People today are sue happy. Something goes wrong, they want to blame someone else.

what does one have to pay for powder coating 18 "wheels 4pcs including blasting in the usa. 200-300 dollars costs this in Sweden.
We would charge $440 for the set here in Colorado. For that size it would be $110 per wheel.

That’s awesome! We have people contact us all the time about powder coating bicycles. If you already have an email list of your previous customers you can send them an email and let them know that you’re now offering powder coating.
What is the maximum number of coats you can apply
There have been people that have done 5 & 6 coats that I know of.

Over thinking it was the most frustrating mistake. There's not need to over think it. Strip the part, out gas the prat, blast the part, blow it off with air, then coat. Now need to over think it and that's where we made our biggest mistake.
