- I love the Grumman F-14 Tomcat - it should still be around today, but thankfully there are plenty of model kits for us to build.
In today's video I'm going to compare the ancient 1/32 boxing by Tamiya with its very recent 1/48 issue - should I just skip the big one and build the newer, better but smaller version again? But I really want a large scale Tomcat!
And to confuse things further, a very quick comparison with the 1/32 Trumpeter versions....
Maybe the solution is to just build them all?

Have you looked at the Trumpeters kit in 1/32 scale
I built six of these when they first came out. I used to work for the local Tamiya agent. This kit was rushed into production due to news that there was another coming out from another manufacturer. The kit does look right though.
I had the original 1980 version of the 1/32 scale Tamiya F 14 I actually still have it . At the time it came with decals for the Jolly Roger USS Nimitz or the Iranian Air Force it was highly detailed with adjustable wings adjustable intakes different turkey feather configuration and airbrakes.

Yes always check Scalemates before choosing ! Hate when they mix up old raised panel lines with "new" recessed in the same kit (Airfix .)
I actually have the original boxing of the Tamiya 1/32 scale kit (60301) in my stash! I am a Tomcat fanatic and have several kits in different scales. My intent is to represent all of the squadrons that were on my aircraft carriers when I was onboard. Thanks for your review! The new 1/48 scale offerings from Tamiya are spectacular, and the AMK F-14D is also a great product.
I can't see anything wrong with that plan - I have a similar goal but with different variants, some what if subjects and lots of VF-31 turkeys! I still havent got my hand on an AMK version yet though.
@@beckersmodels I got a good deal on the AMK kit when I bought it. The boxing is incredible! I did get to review the Eduard resin cockpit for the Tamiya 1/48 F-14A, and it does drop right in, just in case you build another down the road. I am looking forward to your future installments on this build!

Im really looking forward to your 2021 videos now knowing its all going to be larger scale. I personally only do 1/32 and 1/48 large scale aircraft as i like to see the detail without having to pick up the model lol. Great work and content, keep it up.
That's my plan Michael - I'm clearing the bench with my AMK Mig-31 (almost done) and the 1/35 JSU-152, and its full speed into the large scale stuff. I recently have been collecting 1/24 aircraft too and you hit it on the head about seeing detail without picking up the model! Thankfully I have a big bench to work on these - my eyesight is getting worse too, hence the bigger scales.
Only problem is videos will be much more spaced out as I continue up the scales, since they take so bloody long to make...so hence fluffery like this to keep the content going so YT won't bury my videos! Cheers, Chris
@@beckersmodels I personally don’t mind long videos so long as the content is good. So long as there isn’t hrs of sanding being shown, other than that it could be hrs long and I will still watch it.
So far the only two 1/24 scale kits I have is the Airfix hellcat and hawker typhoon.
I too have a large work area simply for that reason, working in larger aircraft.

Great vid. 👍🏻 Some truly bizarre stuff from Tamiya there...Revell also guilty of this regular box engineering of old kits, Airfix too, but at least they are more honest, using the old artwork and calling them 'Classics'.
I was looking at this kit but had heard it was crap & you had to spend a fortune on after market. So I brought the 1/48 for under $80. Cool video. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
Well you dont HAVE to spend money, but yeah its clearly not an up to date or even an early 2000s kit in terms of detail. Good price on the 1/48 - hard to find for under $120 here locally...

When I built my 1/48 Tamiya Tomcat, I was gonna use Brassin AIM-54s, but found that they're roughly 4mm too short. I'd check their 1/32 offering for length too, hope they did their homework and haven't just scaled up 1/48 missiles (what are the chances of that 😁). Great comparison video mate.
Eduard have the same problem with their 1/32 MERs, I got a few sets for my Trumpeter A-6 Intruder and you can barely fit two Mk82s without them hitting each others fuses! I need to check those 1/32 Phoenixes I guess, thanks? If they are too short I might go with a full Sparrow load out with no Phoenix pallets, and donate the pallets to my Trumpeter kits, which are misshapen... cheers, Chris
I built the Black Knights 1/32 version a few years ago. Did recessed panels and riveting, and aftermarket cockpit and PE. It took 6 months to finish but love the final result. Will maybe tackle the 1/48 this modelling stint. (Hopefully before burnout).
Sounds like a big job on the 1/32! I hope to get back to it one day...the 1/48 ones fall together, basically in comparison....no burnout there! Cheers Chris
This is a problem with all plastic companies. Your right, stalemate is your friend.
One thing that stood out on the 1:32 scale Tamiya is the whole nose section lets just call it front section sits to nose up or straight with the body the the section should have a slight nose down look to it I think it would amount to around 1.5- 2 degrees dosen't sound alout but once you take into consideration it makes quit a difference. Means reshaping wedge locks to fit. the 1:48 may be better in that department also.
Ive seen and heard that shape problem too, but not that concerned, although yes, the 1/48 moulds are much much nicer and accurate. Would be good if they could retool the 1/32!

Those Australian prices are outrageous. I’m heading back to live in Australia shortly, I’ll be buying all my models in Asia and bringing them back regularly.
You can still find bargains, but yes Asian sourced kits are still the way to go. Check out Aussie house prices first though - 3rd highest in the world!
The 1/48 F-14 is a fantastic kit.
it has too many shortcomings for me.
Loved mine 1/48 as well, more then the 1/32 black aces i've done long ago, but i've gotten better at it so need to redo a 1/32 tomcat again, that's for next winter..
Hi interesting information. Its a pity I did not know all this before buying the Tamiya 1/32 kit? But I guess I will just use it as a crash test dummy along with my new air brush, and look at getting one of the newer 1/48 kits in the future. BTW I do have the AMK 14D kit;-) Cheers and Beers.

Good lord one could go crazy picking thru the options to purchase one of these in 1/32. I am looking at the Tamiya kit, and noticed in a review "not Tamiya quality". Which got me to wondering if they didn't purchase or lease Revell's old mold of the aircraft. Which lead me to here.
Being an old modeler that has been away from the hobby for a bit, though I did purchase and store many kits (too many) thru the years, I did start to notice the better quality of more modern kits. But I do come from the age when Revell, AMT/Ertl, Monogram, EPC were the convenient purchasable king.
Though not a huge aircraft enthusiast (mostly semi trucks for me, until recently and got a new itch) I did happen to pick up 2 Revell F14 (cause who doesn't love an F-14) 1/32 kits many years ago (now buried in the bottom of the large model storage closet, in a reinforced box to be safe, since factory kit boxes suck at supporting weight), and thought a couple more in a set of 4 would be nice to hang.
I was hoping to find matching Revell kits, due to the quality. Being worried I would find Tamya's to be greatly better and never really have the fire to build the Revell's. But all I could find in new sales is the Tamiya's and Trumpeter.
So I'm gonna bite the bullet and get the Tamiya, and compare it to the Revell's. Its an exspensive guess/hope. I'll let you know when I compare the two.
And this was a good video! Thanks for taking the time! It really helped eliminate the confusion for me not to buy the Trumpeter.
Thanks for the nice comments - yes the Tamiya is probably still the best option in 1/32. I just bought the Revell kit and re-riveted it with some minor scribing as well. I'm actually using some downgraded parts from my Tamiya build (cockpit pieces, fuel tanks and ordnance) to update the Revell kit...

@@festersmith8352 Oh no! There's a huge difference in quality between the two. Revell is recessed panel lines all over, but not a single rivet, and the panel lines can be quite wide and deep (plus theres no parts or panel lines for the wing bags). Tamiya has recessed and raised, but both are petite and in scale, with lots of well defined rivets. The fit of the main parts on both kits is old school however...its not modern tooling or engineering at all!

The greatest fallacy in the Western world is that a new thing is always better then an old thing, simply because it is new. I build my aircraft kits doing what an aircraft is meant to do - fly. Also, not all panels have troughs between them, some sit proud, some are lapped over. I love Tamiya kits as well, but I don’t like paying for internal detail I will never install or see.
I’d argue that Kotare are making better kits then anyone because they’ve actually reproduced what the aircraft exterior looks like. On the theme of old kits still being great kits - the original Airfix 1/24 Spitfire 1 has very faithfully reproduced the texture and appearance of the externals of a Spitfire 1. The current trend of little holes for rivets and trenches between panels might look good to some - but it is not even remotely accurate.

I always wanted the 1/32 kit as a kid but I could never afford it. I got the Revell one instead. It was a quarter of the price, no raised panel lines and a fully detailed cockpit. Might be worth a look if you're into your vintage stuff. Their 1/32 F15s were really good, too.

Try scalemates first to see what parts fit - most of the stuff for the Tamiya and Trumpeter F-14's should fit. Try Spruebrothers in the US, or Hobbyworld-USA as a starting point. Cheers, Chris

Apparently the Trumpy cat is a relatively easy build if you don't want to change anything, but of course it has some accuracy problems. I have one (or two) and the Zacto intakes but I really want to get back to this old Tamiya version!
@@beckersmodels yeah I am having a mental argument with myself about whether I want to do the Zacto intakes or not. Still time to decide but it looks as if it's pick your poison if you want a daddy scale Tomcat.
@@jimsmodels they look pretty good but will take some effort, not quite drop in. The thing is though, then you go down the rabbit hole and start to look at panel lines and rivets that shouldnt be there and updating other details etc. I have a cunning plan with mine, but need to work on some smaller scale F-14s to bone up on weathering skills first...
@@beckersmodels yup I'm already anticipating filling panels and rivets. I've gotta get some more in depth research done. I've talked to a couple people that have given me am idea of what to expect with the intakes. I figure in the end I cam handle it but this build would be a hefty investment to stall out on.

Do the panel lines need to be scribed anyways? They look sort of shallow?
well they definitely arent raised, so they need to be removed, and there needs to be something there, or it will look like a toy...so...

Hello from Czech republic. The price of accesories in Australia are pretty big, but I think its due to transport true almost whole world. Here in Czech Rep. this cocpit from Aires (which is Czech companie, same like Eduard) cost about 72 Australian dollar. About Tamia F-14 1/32, its shame they still selling this junk for same price like perfect F-16 1/32 kit. Sorry for my bad English.
Hearing alot of good stuff about that 1:32nd f-16 kit. Especially the removable weapons and vertical stabilizer for transport seem to get alot of fans (not to mention the fit ofcourse).
I wonder how these 2 kits can be so different quality wise though, i really love the F-14 but for now the hobbyboss kits seem to be better.(i could be wrong though, it's been a while)

Now I have an ijust purchased (via eBay) a. 1:48 Corsair, it arrives in a smaller box than I was expecting but it’s marked 1:42 . I open the box and it really seems the same kit size as my 1:72 bomber . How can I verify my size?

I can't understand why everyone likes either the 32 or the 48 scale Tamiya kit. When neither one of them comes with the kit parts that Hobbyboss 48 scale includes. Such as two complete engines, rubber tires, detailed cockpit, moveable wings etc. Not to mention a decent price range. I plan on buying the H.B. Kit next year.
For the 1/48 scale Tamiya F-14, its all about buildability, fit and engineering with more than adequate detail. The HB F-14's are renowned for poor fit, soft and unnecessary detail (i.e rivets) and not so good engineering, that' s why they're always on sale at a huge discount. Good for a paint mule or if you want to spend a lot of time fixing them. As for rubber wheels - yeah no thanks, go resin for durability (or wheels up for proper sexiness).

Personally I'd go with the AMK 1/48 kit if building any F-14s
Interesting choice - what is your rationale? I've seen and talked to many who have built both Tamiya and AMK and they prefer the Tamiya for buildability. Yes, the AMK has poseable flaps/slats and higher level of detail plus better weapons.
I'll second the AMK - got their F-14D kit and cannot stop marvelling at the detail and engineering. Seems to be more a builder's kit than the Tamiya, which for me is golden because I love the build process.
Another big plus is all the options to leave things open, especially those wing flaps/slats and roll spoilers.

Depends on what you want. But Eduard dont make an F-14 IIRC....if they do, its a reboxed Hasegawa or Academy which are inferior to anything Tamiya make in 1/48..
Eduard and Hasegawa are nicer than Tamiya. They just dont' fall together as well.
Funnily enough I dont have that many Eduard kits, just a few Hasegawa (mainly there 1/32 plus the new tool 1/72 Emily flying boat)...different modellers have different expectations of what they want from a kit.
To be fair Tamiya DO make Pig F-14's Try 60313 1/32 Black Knights.
They are NOT what people make them out to be. £150 in the UK.
They are taking the mick or joke. Good luck to people who are fan bouy's of Tamiya.
